here you go, my dude, knock it out of the park
Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Come lift up your voices, all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the company and one to the bard
Let us bet and play fairly, time to shuffle the cards
Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the cutlass that I love so well
For her strength and her damage sure none can excel
We have fought many battles, with our lives on the line
When beheading my enemies, t'was her time to shine
So here's a health to the company and one to the monk
Let us drink and let's join him, as he's constantly drunk
Let's drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
The rogue is off stealing, and he's not coming back
The paladin's off chasing, to give him a whack
The wizard's off reading, his knowledge to grow
I'm what's left of the party, a murderhobo

I used to sing this near the end of revels back when i did medieval reenactment. Only took a few times before everyone would sing it together, toast, and give hugs at each revel we held.
Some of those people have since left this world. "Though i may or might never all meet them again", this song is a wonderful memory of times spent with them.

Playing this with my friends on our last day of HS. One ships off to the air force, two are going to the same college, one is moving out somewhere and the last one grew distant. And me? Well that's why I'm going to play this. I have no money nor the intelligence for college or travel so I guess I'll wait for them to return when I grow old. For one last glass.

Hey man never give up on this. Shit may seem hard now, and you may think you wont be able to do anything. There is a saying in my family "You already have the no, so try to find the yes". Look for opportunities and take them when they show up and dont give up on reaching your goals. You don't _need_ to go to college or the army to be sucessful, so dont think you're gonna be bound to the same place forever. Idk who you are or anything about your situation, but i dont like seeing people look at their future in such a grim way. Cheers mate, hope life goes well for you!

Now, that is the sort of sacrifice many of us would get behind!

Come lift up your voices, all grief to refrain,
For we may or might never, all meet here again

Let us drink and be merry, all out of one glass,
Let us drink and be merry, all grief to refrain
For we may or might never, all meet here again,
Our ship lies at anchor, she's ready to dock,
I wish her safe landing, without any shock,
If ever I should meet you, by land or by sea,

In 1946, one year after WW2 ended, a sailor is sitting alone at a table with three empty seats. As he's drinking he begins to sing but as he sings, he sees the shapes of his friends sitting at the table with him & the begin joining in with him. He continues remembering the times they had fun at the bar by singing, drinking, and getting into the occasional bar fight. He flashes back to when he & his friends all enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The memories keep flashing forward, from each of them graduating basic training, to being sent to fight the Japanese in the South Pacific. As the memories keep going, he sees how each of his friends lose their lives in the battle of Midway. One is shot down by a Japanese pilot, another is bombed at a machine gun turret, the final one sacrifices himself to save some fellow sailors (including the narrator) who were wounded.
As he continues remembering how he lost his friends, their shapes begin to fade in the order of which they died; the song gets more and more quiet & lonely as it goes on to the point where only one voice is heard. When the sailor finishes, he begins to cry as he looks at a photo of himself & his friends before they were shipped off. He then wipes his tears and walks out of the bar with a look of determination & vows to live his life the best he can, in the memory of his fallen comrades.

I see many comments regarding the history of this song. Many said comments are operating on the premise that this is primarily a sea shantie. In reality, it was (as a few mentioned) a song of immigration, of which there are many Celtic tunes. Others include Paddy’s green shamrock shore, etc etc. Interestingly, in a musical sense, it was a pivotal moment in American musical history. Irish immigrants (particularly in the south) brought us banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and the beginnings of bluegrass and country music.

A wonderful and amazing man by the name of Owen Phyfe (god i hope i spelled that right) had an extra verse all his own.
"My footsteps may falter, my wind it might fail

This song will always have a place in my heart. (A bit of context). My secondary school life was absolutely crap. Having to feel bad for being English, being made fun of for my ticks with the rest of my year was people doing those same twitches back to me. My history teacher was a bit racist towards white people. Every class was like that for me. Except for one class, my music class, it was the best class during my GCSE's, it had my favourite teacher and the kindest students in the year as well. And throughout the year, I was allowed to put on a song for the class to listen to. And a few months before the end of the year, I emailed this song to my music teacher to be played on the final day. And when that day came, and then when she played this song, I became so close to Properly crying. But when the line 'I will always remember, your kindness to me' was sang, I could not hold it in any longer and just cried. Because this was the only class that was kind to me. Obviously their is more to it, but I am not good at making very long comments. But from what I said. This is why this is my favourite song. Of All Time. Thank you for making this song. Cheers from the East End :)
