    As someone who has climbed for the better part of a decade I still think El Cap is beyond terrifying. That exposure is similar to looking out the window of a plane.

      And just think someone did it solo...no ropes!

    • @toadamine
      @toadamine 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that is even close to representing it... I've looked out many airplane windows and never felt exposed... I have climbed radio and cell towers and drill-rig derricks without safety equipment and felt mildly exposed... But the day after watching free solo, I felt like I had climbed the mountain myself as my body was so sore from all the "oh shit" moments and vertigo I felt while watching the video and the camera just starts floating out over a ledge and looking down... Similar vibe here... I feel like hanging onto the outside of a flying airplane would be more similar... Lmao

    The old climbing ethic was once an aid route had been free climbed ('freed'), it was no longer classified nor climbed as an aid climb. But this is El Cap and it would have restricted access to The Nose to only a handful of climbers in the world over several decades I guess...

      Himi Jendrix i know you left this comment a while ago, but seeing as no one replied I’ll explain. This is one of two pitches on this route rated at 5.14. In other words, absurdly fucking hard. Only 3 people have ever climbed in without using aid gear (the rope ladders he was clipping). Essentially the rock is just super steep and pretty featureless, so it’s hard to get a grip onto anything really. The only way up it is jamming your fingers into that crack to support your weight.

      Wow. To Robb's point, go watch the documentary 'Valley Uprising' and learn about the origin of rock climbing in Yosemite Valley. Aid climbing was the norm for many years.

      @@robbpasky4684 I'm a pretty good gym climber, I can climb anything in any gym I've been to (granted that's not many)... I have no interest in this sort of thing...outdoors, iI much prefer hiking, camping, whitewater kayaking/rafting, motorcycles, hunting/fishing, etc, where I can take the pups/friends/good food, toys, comfort...
      This is still scary! You got some big balls that's for sure! I'm a big pussy, I mostly don't like climbing because it just tears up my hands and knees and clothes and stuff... And I have fairly tough calloused hands.... 😂

      sit on the rope for a bit and let your feet rest. A toe cramp is probably only going to happen early on anyway and that's if you didn't properly stretch.

    how much climbing assistance do you get from the ropes? Do you just climb with your body weight or use the clips and ropes to get leverage?

    • @spaghettihair
      @spaghettihair 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The leader gets no mechanical advantage from the ropes. They're just in place to catch you if you fall.

    • @malikbakt
      @malikbakt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sinisteo Soxilano just physics (strength of materials, lever mechanics, etc). Devices are engineered to hold lot more weight than weight of human body, and they lock up in crack on several angles and under the load.

    Okay so this might be a retarded question, but when you climb up the mountain you gotta climb back down it right? Like there ain't no path to get down or anything right? If yes, how the fuck do you do that?! I imagine it's not the same as climbing down a rock wall.
