Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way 2 motorcycle tour by BMW 1250 GSA and Triumph Tiger 900 - Ep 2

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 30 ส.ค. 2023
- This episode should have taken us from Tullamore to Leenane but sadly disaster struck and my external hard drive malfunctioned and couldn't be recovered, so all the on bike footage was lost from Tullamore to Achill Island. Everyday is a school day! Important lessons learned. Unfortunately, the weather was also against us on much of this trip which means some very damp days in the saddle! It really was the WILD Atlantic Way - especially our aborted attempt to see Downpatrick Head. C'est La Vie, it's all part of the adventure! The roads as ever were stunning as was the scenery (for the most part) despite the setbacks we hope you enjoy this episode and please feel free to share and comment!
Accommodation: O'Domhnaill's B+B £103 - Leenane Hotel £131 - Achill Island Hotel £151 - The Acres B+B £103 (all booking.com)
The Route: Tullamore - Carraroe - Clifden - Leenane - Achill Island - Downpatrick Head - Killala

Great weather for ducks. Thanks for taking us for the (wet) ride, though. Still beautiful and the places you stay and eat (and of course, Guinness o'clock) are always lovely to see.
Thank you Jenny - just coincided with the wettest July ever! 😂⛈️☔️ - still, last year was the opposite so can’t complain! 👍😀
Aptly named the Wild Atlantic Way with typical Irish weather. Another great video. Cheers.
Thank you 🙏 it certainly was WILD this time around! But we have to take the rough with the smooth! 😀👍
Never get tired of a nice pint of Guinness...😄 Some amazing roads can rival anything that Scotland or Wales has to offer.
Thanks Tom - completely agree! 😀👍
Hi to the both of you cracking video absolutely stunning views so very enjoyable shame about the weather but you got the proper clothing that' helps looking forward to the next video
Thanks very much Craig 🙏 it was a shame about the weather but last year we had exceptional weather with lots of sunshine ☀️ - that’s biking! Thanks for watching! 😀👍
Bummer of a summer in Ireland this yr.A great test for any gear.i love the leeaun hotel brilliant place. There is a new part to that hotel which has more up to date rooms either way as you say its very clean. That waterfall is where Richard Harris give it to Tom beringer in the film the field. Good honest reviews guys.
Thanks very much Derrick🙏 I don’t think Ireland had a summer this year! 😂 we really liked the Leenane Hotel. Interesting factoid about the waterfall 👍! Thanks for watching! 😀👍
Another Friday morning adventure all ways great to see both 🇬🇧🍷🌨🍺🏍🏍 great stuff and seafood chowder 😂
Thank you Trevor - the weather was wet but the chowder didn’t disappoint! 😀👍
You only get 2 showers of rain a week in Ireland. The first lasts 4 days, the second lasts 3 days.
July and August were a washout, and here we are in September with 28c sunshines😮
Lousy timing! 😂☀️☔️
Ireland at it's most raw😮on the bright side, the food and ice-cream looked delicious 😋
Thanks David - it certainly was raw! ⛈️☔️ but that’s Ireland for you - never a let down with the food and Guinness! 😀👍
Thanks for a fun view of the WAW. (Fun from this side of the screen anyway.) I love how you both keep a positive attitude given the epic wet weather and technical gremlins. Thanks again.
As an aside, I find that many of my favorite Moto TH-camrs are British, which besides you two includes Wheeliegood tv, Lamb Chop, and the Missenden Flyer. I admire the stiff upper lip that Monty Python quipped “is all part of growing up and being British.”
Thanks very much Marco 🙏 it’s not always easy but we try to stay positive 😀 after all, there’s nothing to be gained from negativity and whining! It is all part of “growing up and being British “! We grew up with Monty Python - must have been subliminal indoctrination! 😂😀
Hard work in that weather for sure ! Very inspirational and good accommodation reviews. Thanks for your efforts.
Thank you Simon 🙏 it certainly was challenging at times 😬! We appreciate your comments and thanks for watching! 😀👍
Thanks for the video and ride along
Thank you Jim - glad to have you along for the ride! 👍😀
Good lord, more rain there than Wales!!....how the ride would have been more dynamic had it been dry - my heart goes out to you both having to suffer inclement weather like that, but its that huge risk we all take....
There certainly was Phil! ⛈️⛈️ But we can’t complain, last year was exceptional with sun for two weeks! ☀️ - got to take the rough with the smooth! 😀👍
another great vid both thank you
Thanks very much Allan - we appreciate it! 😀👍
Ireland weather is beautiful and ugly at times! But the people are always incredibly beautiful and friendly! But the landscape and view are always breathtaking!
Thanks Thomas, you’re absolutely right! The people make the country! 😀👍
Thank you both for sharing your journey how beautiful very part of Ireland and the people are! Bless you both ride safe
We just love your kind of videos ❤. It's always fun to ride along with you. It's just a shame that the weather wasn't quite as cooperative. We are really sorry for you. But after rain usually comes sunshine 🌞. Thank you very much for the inspiration. Ireland is also on our route plan. Looking forward to the next episode....🎉🤗👍 Have a nice weekend😊
Thanks very much Sandra 🙏 you’ll love Ireland when you get over there and fingers crossed for some good weather for you ☀️ it really is a beautiful place! 😀👍
Great trip, glad you came back, did this tour in 2017 on BMW K1's 5 of them and stayed in the leenane hotel got some great photos, also changed to Rucka best gear there is and designed for exactly the weather you got.👍👍👍
PS the house on Keem beach features in the movie the Banshees of Inisherin, where Brendan Gleason's character lived, just a piece of useless information for you.😊
Thanks Pat it was great to be back despite the weather! ☔️⛈️ we loved the Leenane Hotel 👍 and the Rukka change was definitely the best decision! 😀👍
Another wonderful video, I see you had the awful weather Ireland offers a lot of the time. I was so lucky last month, it was 26 degrees every day. You have the same taste in music as me, I played a few of those tracks in my Ireland series ! Thanks for sharing 😄😄☔☔
Thanks very much Martin - you had great weather 26!!! Having said that the previous year we had brilliant weather so you can’t win them all! 😀👍
Good vid folks!! Always nice to see I’m not the only one getting drenched riding around Ireland! Hopefully catch you on the road one of these days in our Emerald Isle. 👌🏍🤗
Thanks Dave - beautiful country but a bit wet from time to time! 😂⛈️ would love to catch up with you sometime on the road! 👍😀
Sue, Dave will show you where to get the best ice creams@@midlifemotorcyclediaries
@@NeilFitz excellent! 😀👍
I have been watching all your videos and I finally had tried a Guinness ...had 2 potent stuff...at our local English Pub ...London Jack's ..You folks must be professionals the quality of the video and editing and my favorite the music is amazing. My wife and I got a kick at 25:13 of the dog track races on the TV...St. Petersburg Fl. where we live started dog races in the 1920s...they outlawed them a few years ago...
Thank you Patrick 🙏 Guinness is an acquired taste for many - I’ve tried it all over the world but it always seems to taste better in Ireland! We’re glad you enjoyed the video and well done for spotting the dog races - we had no idea it was from Florida! 😀👍
Once again a great video. I have to say that this is really good entertainment. My wife (who does not drive herself or is a passenger) loves the videos. The information you give is top notch and the fact that you smile and are happy regardless of the weather, well let's say we look forward to every episode. Best travel information you can get. By the way the music selection is superb😄🍻
Thanks very much Heine🙏 we’re glad you enjoyed it and as for the weather, we can’t control it so have to accept it! We really appreciate your comments and thanks for watching! 😀👍
Loved the video brilliant editing etc. you two are an amazing couple so much together and entertaining 👍👍 bill near Consett 👍
Thanks very much Bill for the lovely comments! We’re really glad you enjoyed it! 😀👍
You passed through my family home town of Clifden ❤️!
It looked a lovely place and we’d like to go back one day and experience it in the dry! 😀👍
Interesting comments about quiet roads, When I did it in 2016, it was stuffed with coaches from Dublin.
Hi Andy, I guess it depends upon what time of year you do it? Or possibly the awful weather put people off! 😂☔️⛈️
Lovely scenery but you had a lot of rain. We found visibility bad in heavy rain, esp as we wear glasses, despite having pinlocks.
Good investment Sue, with the Rukka gear though!! 👍
😄Bri had to talk me into retiring my loyal Alpine Star jacket just before we left for Ireland - and boy am I glad he did! I would definitely have been soaked with the amount of rain we had. One of our better investments!😉👍
Sorry for the delay in catching up. A great video as usual, both. I'm still off my bike, so really value being able to "get lost" in your adventures. The weather is disappointing but on a par with it here in Scotland prior to the current "heat wave". Don't worry about your lost footage. You'll just have to go again! After all, it would be a shame to miss the opportunity of more "Guinness o'clock" sessions.
Looking forward to the next one. Ride safe.
Thank you Dave 🙏 sorry to hear you’re still not on two wheels 🙁 hopefully soon 🤞 yes, the weather could have been better 😬 but you have to go with the flow! The lost footage was a real disappointment but worse things can happen - now got an SSD hard drive!😀👍
At last you had a decent glass of red! ...lol😅
😂😀👍
The weather has been absolutely dreadful from July onwards till now. the driest June followed by the wettest July on record 😒The weather didn't ruin the video! Great travel vlog again 🙌
Thank you 🙏 it really did feel like the wettest July on record ⛈️☔️😂 but we were spoiled last year ☀️ - either way Ireland is one of our favourite places! 😀👍
Thank you Sue and Brian another great ride with you both , its always a treat to find an MMD vid on a friday morning , thanks again .
Thank you Michael 🙏 we really appreciate your support! 😀👍
A shame about the loss of Your footage and the terrible weather.
Big contrast between the level of service in the Leenane Hotel and that in Caffeine and Machine.
I've traveled a lot of miles on that road from Belmullet to Killala over the years. There are some lovely detours off the R314 if time and weather are on Your side, that bit of road at 15:43 , through Glen Ossra, has a poor surface very slippy in the wet, the music choice was appropriate.....😁😁
The Acres B&B in Killala is a very old building, probably why the rooms are small. 23:40 a long time since Beamish was £1.45 a pint......😧😧😧😧
Looking forward to the next instalment, on roads which I also know very well.
Thank you for your comments 🙏 it’s nice to hear from someone local who knows the area! Yes, it was wet but we love Ireland wet or dry - the food and the Guinness never disappoints! 😀👍
Pity about the weather but obviously still enjoyable. Spent a few days in Westport last week. Guinness 👍. Hope the weather is a bit more kind for the next episode.
Thanks Stephen - sadly the weather wasn’t with us on this trip 😬! But on the upside the Guinness didn’t disappoint! 😀👍
Thank you both for yet another great video...liked and thanks as always...🏴
Thanks very much Ian 🙏 we really appreciate your comments and support! 😀👍
Me and my son did the southern part of the WAW and experienced similar weather. It was our first time riding in Ireland. What I couldn't get over is that on the smaller 'B' and rural roads 85-90% have the solid white lines meaning you can't overtake!
And there’s hardly any traffic around! 🤷♂️😀
Entertaining vid. Shame the weather wasn't with you on this trip to Ireland. Rukka is some of the best kit when conditions are like that (but too hot for me when its over 20C)
Shame about your storage drive letting you down. We use SanDisk SSD solid state and so far so good.
Thanks Richard! Yes, it’s a difficult one with Rukka - love it in the wet but what do you do when you’re riding in variable conditions? In Spain it can rain in the mountains and then be baking hot 🥵 - learned my lesson with hard drives - I’ve now got an SSD too! 😀👍
So, it should called the WAWAW, the Wet And Wild Atlantic Way. Great video nonetheless.
That’s so right! 😂⛈️☔️
I've only just discovered your channel. It's brilliant, you do the filming just the way i would if i were clever enough. There's something about you 2 that keeps you watching. Cheers. 👍
Thanks very much Trevor 🙏 we’re really glad you like the videos and we really appreciate your comments! Thanks for watching! 😀👍
Nice video guys...there's a moody beauty to Ireland 🇮🇪 in the rain. ( although that's cold comfort when you are riding in the pouring rain!) I got lucky last week with the weather on my trip over, it was a joy. Look forward to seeing the next video! Cheers Steve
Thanks Steve - we know what you mean about moody beauty - we’d rather be watching someone riding in it than be in it though! 😂 we can’t complain, last year’s weather was exceptional ☀️ - this was more realistic! 😀👍
Nice video guys, the editing is great. Such a pity about losing the footage but you have made a good video anyway. Thanks for making it, regards from Wales.
Thank you 🙏 we were really disappointed with losing the footage but it could have been worse, we could have lost all of it 😱 - lesson learned! Hope all is good in Wales! 😀👍
Enjoyed the footage in your latest video Brian. Shame about the weather but Goretex keeps it all out. I did the same stretch from Galway to Derry in May 2018 and was blessed with sunshine. You’re both big contributors to our economy so I hope the weather improved. Thanks.
Thanks Brian 🙏 we had great weather last year ☀️ you have to take the rough with the smooth! We’re always happy to contribute to the Irish economy - one of our favourite places! 😀👍
🎉🎉🎉
The roads look so much quieter than in the uk!! Brilliant as ever, shame about the footage but still great. Keep em coming! Sending much love to you both x
Thanks Sue 🙏 the roads are so much quieter and always great even if it rains! 😂⛈️☔️
Another great video - thanks. Can't believe you don't have more subscribers, have you thought about taking a small dog with you😮
Thanks very much Oliver🙏 glad you enjoyed it! A small dog 🐶 😂 hadn’t thought of that! 😀👍
That was a soggy one I felt for ya
Thank Nigel - it certainly was! 😂⛈️☔️☔️⛈️
What a fantastic episode you definitely had everything, I was going to ask how are you getting on with the new panniers Sue, but you seem to be handling them fine.
👍😊🏍
Hi Ady, I thought I’d really be aware of the extra weight but I guess because the extra weight is lower down, it’s actually fine. I keep reminding myself that I’m a tad wider but no problems so far 🤞🤞😄Thanks for watching ☺️
Great travel log again. Gutted for you due to the weather, but us bikers take it in our stride! It's looking "changeable" for our trip next week, anticlockwise round the South.
Thank you Paul 🙏 yes the weather was not on our side this time! But you just have to get on with it - hope you have better luck next week 🤞☀️😀👍
Planning on doing the WAW next year with my brother probably starting at Kinsale over 5 days so following your adventures avidly. Great series keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Ian - hope you have a great trip and hope the weather gods are on your side! 🤞😀👍☀️
Luckily, nothing to do with the weather🤪 It’s a nice trip with you anyway👍😊 Tough nature in this part of the country😳
Thanks Johnny - you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth! Last year was sunny throughout and this year balanced it out! 😂😀
Saying here in Ireland , always plan for rain and if it doesn't come it's a bonus!!🙄
You’re so right! 😂 we love it anyway! 😀👍
Still an enjoyable vlog as I'm sat here cosy, dry and warm but having ridden is such conditions I know how it can get to you, I remember during one summer I thought the rain Gods had something personal against me, seemed every time I got the bike out after a 6-2 shift it would rain just enough to annoy me. Ride safe both.
By the way, what's all this about? 22:40 lol.
Thank you 🙏 yes it was certainly a wet one this time! ☔️ it can wear you down overtime but that’s biking! Take the rough with the smooth 😀 it’s not what it looks like 😂 I was actually watching athletics! 😀👍
Did the Rukka gear keep you dry all trip?. Love watching you both great vid.
Thank you 🙏 the Rukka gear was the best investment - kept us dry throughout !👍😀
Great videos btw, please keep them coming. I'm comparing my Ireland rides to you both. When was your trip? I was there last month, got up in Galway intending to head for Leenaun but it was chucking it down bad so headed east to Athlone (my next overnight stay). On the way my TFT was showing 13C! When we got to Athlone, sun came out and it jumped to 21C then rained on and off. Going back, lots still to see. Have you been to Athlone? Fantastic spot.
Thank you 🙏 we were there in July - unfortunately, the wettest July in years! We’ve never been to Athlone - maybe next time 🤔 there are so many places to visit! 😀👍
Strange question for me to ask but what tires are you running on those bikes to handle all the rain? Do you worry about hydroplaning? Did you hydroplane?
Rain does reck a ride when it’s every day and all day long but I do enjoy riding in the rain for a day or so as long as it doesn’t stop you on the road.
Looking forward to the next episode!!
Thank you!!
Thank you 🙏 we had no real problem with the rain and didn’t hydroplane -( mind you we were steady with our speed) - we both have Metzler Roadtec 01 tyres - seem to perform pretty well! 😀👍
Great video what kind of paniers do you have? Thnks
Thank you 🙏 I have Bumot panniers on the BMW and Sue has Triumph panniers on her 900! 😀👍
Great video as always. I am a little confused by your accommodation scoring. You gave the Acres B&B 55443 which would be an average of 4.2 but then gave it 3 stars. Do you tend to lean towards the room score which in this case you gave a 3?
Thank you for your comments - technically you’re correct about the individual scores and in this case the room really impacted on the overall score! Thanks for watching and commenting! 😀👍
Crap weather
Crap hard drives
My summer too 😢
Yep! Never trust a hard drive again 😳 SSD from now on! 😀👍
@@midlifemotorcyclediaries I foolishly cut & pasted a lot of files from an old one which had become temperamental to a new one rather than copy / paste and lost a lot off stuff, fortunately not crucially important, mostly music, only to have it fail within about a month and of course you get no recompense other than purchase price. Much rather have my collection of Corsair Survivor sticks
@@derbyshireruralrider9398 I think you’ve got to back up the back up! 😀
@@midlifemotorcyclediaries in hindsight. Got 2 copies of things like old photos though
Love your videos, but maybe a little more narrative instead of all the music..
Thank you Mark🙏 we try to include narratives where there’s something particular to comment on! 😀👍
you are hero,s i,ll give irland a miss sorry
It’s definitely worth it Reg - we were just unlucky with the wettest July in history! 😀👍
