- New firmware v2.00 for the Sony A7IV has just dropped but the question we all want to know. Will it ruin my camera? This is a completely valid question as past firmware updates had failed once or twice before.
I must inform you to follow all the instructions when updating your firmware because a LOT of people tend to not follow the instructions and do the wrong thing.

Updated just after release, have had no problems with any updates, as you and many others have mentioned, following instructions exactly is critical to having no issues :)

The update actually bricked my A7IV but I was able to fix it. I’ve done a video about how I fixed it on my channel just in case it happens to anyone else.
WOw, Bummer, but good you got it fixed, Seems like not such a great update other than getting their new Cloud base app, which I will most likely never use.
Same here. Bricked up one of mine. I removed the battery, formatted SD card, put in file again, popped as card in then put in battery and turn the camera on and waited a few mins and came back.

Hey Jason. Thanks for this walk through, I updated my A7IV with this new firmware. Then I noticed my sony remote controller (RMT-P1BT) stopped working right after. I thought it was the battery going bad, but it could be due to the Bluetooth pairng. Just like the imaging app/phone unpairing need to be reset and paired to the creators app. To fix this issue, I simply had to unpair and pair the bluethoot remote again and it worked.
I thought I'd share this if anyone else with an A7IV has ran into this issue after doing the firmware upgrade.

hey Jason, I have a question. I have the sony a7IV firmware 2.00 and the portkeys lh5p II and I am having an issue getting the camera control to work have you tested these two with the 2.00 firmware? if you have a moment I would love to talk with you and see if maybe you can tell me what im doing wrong. it was working flawless with my sony a7siii and i tested with my a7iii with no issues but it doesnt work with the a7iv firmware 2.00
I have a Sony A7iv. Started with v1.1. Updated to 1.05 then moved on to 2.00 right after the other update. I had no issues updating. I'm fairly new to camera work. I was a bit afraid to update. I only recently got the A7iv and its my first good quality and only camera I own. However, I made the punch anyway after doing my research and making sure the update was safe enough to move forward. My battery wasn't even fully charged either. It was at roughly 60%. I'm glad I did update. Wasn't a huge fan of edge imaging app compared to the creators app.
I was on a similar track. Went from 1.00 ---> 1.05 ---> 2.00. Both updated correctly with no issues.
To use IEM, in the app- click camera connect/registration. The to fx3/30,r4/5 are there to use.
thanks, Jase...no problems whatsoever with my update though the connection to the new app is a bit finicky. Still feels like a gimmick rather than an absolute necessity. Time will tell

It worked for me. I had to register on my laptop but it connected as well as the last Sony app, lol.

Updated mine and used it for 3 days trip. No problem at all.

Isn't the Imaging Edge app from Sony the Creators app minus upload to the cloud?
need help. i updated my sony a7iv and now it shuts down in 15 minutes. would it be possible to downgrade?
Nevermind Jason. I got it to update. Had to delete previous versions off of my computer, etc. That may have been the culprit. Its updating fine now and should work. So the solution is clear your download in the browser, delete any previous .dat files, then download a fresh version of 2.0.

hmm, all functionality was already in imaging edge app. It would be good to know how it compares.
Have you noticed any negative effects? It's been 5 months, you probably should have noticed any issues by now if there were any. Which ''operational stability'' improvements were done? Has the issue with the not remembering SRGB/ RGB and with Raw settings in general before restarting and setting up restart? It's not an issue for me as it remembers it now. Do anyone of you know if firmware 2.0 will result in raw files work in Rawtherapee and Darktable? They currently don't, Rawtherapee, all adjustments work, but it changes resolution and stretches pixels on right side, Darktable squeezes the sides, reads wrong resolution. Lightroom works, so does Sony's own software, Imaging Edge Edit.
It also looks like wireless tethering doesn't work anymore for Capture One iPad app.
Jason, do you still have any overheating issues with ur A7IV in video mode?
I updated immediately, no problems at all. I believe that he A7rv will be the next to get this (I believe all newer Sony's will get this).

That looks totally unchanged, the latency was great on 5.8ghz in pre 2.0 firmware
more so the menu features you can access. Think of it as an updated image edge

I think my autofocus seems better after the update. I just dont know a good way to test it now that the update has been done.
Jason, I'm hoping you can help me. I've not found a resolution so far. I follow the firmware instructions precisely, putting the update file into the root directory of the card, but when I go to setup / version / update, it says there's no media inserted in slot 1 (but there is) or the file is damaged. Can't seem to find a work around. I have version 1.11 on my a7 iv, which *should* be 1.05 or later. This has been extremely irritating and I'm going on day 5 with no results!
But the phone control with the creator's app isn't much changed from the control through the imaging edge, am i wrong? With the imaging edge you can also control and change everything

Tried to update today, 13.04.23. Followed all of Sony's instructions. Previews updates no problem. Just left my camera in the shop I bought it and it is going to be sent to the Sony center for repair or replacement. Update was going fine and at a certain point it started to blink 7 times slow followed by 7 fast blinks. Hate this updating system.
Yes here's for hoping this comes to the a7s3. Question, does this app support display gamma assist? That's a nlmust have feature for me to help with nailing exposure/WB.

Hey Jason have you tried the Firmware 2.0.1 update yet? I still have not gotten the 2.0.0 installed but wondering.. I have read some people saying third party batteries are not working properly and or the battery life left on the battery no longer works... Hope not

I updated the Sony a7iv and on the 35mm1.4 I noticed that the focus is not 100%, I didn't like the update, then I tested the lens on the a7iii and it was 100%, I'm checking the possibility and trying to find a way to go back to the previous version of the update
Hey Jason, Thanks for the detailed video. If I bought the a7m4 this week, it came with v1.00. Sony's website suggests that update it to 1.00 -to- 1.05 -to- 2.00.
I have done that and my camera body has v2.00 now.
I got confused when in the video you suggested updating a7m4 to 1.00 -to- 1.05 -to- 1.10 / 1.11 -and then- 2.00 .
My question is,
If I will go with sony's suggested route 1.00 > 1.05 > 2.00, am I going to get all the update benefits of 1.05 and 1.11 or I might miss anything 😶

where are you finding the older versions? I can't find them anywhere, only the newest firmware update :(
I did the update and I regret it. Touch focus was not working in video mode in this app. In addition, I do not see the tracking point on the camera screen even if it is not connected to the application. I'm talking about video mode, of course. I much prefer the old camera control app, and luckily my FX3 is working normally.
My Sony A7IV bricked and got in touch with Sony service by phone in Canada last Saturday and we tried to save it with no success. Now they gave me a list of authorized repair and said they can’t do nothing . I send it to Gentec in Markham near Toronto on Monday and now waiting for the estimate. The one year warranty is finish since the 27 December 2021 and since I paid it with my Visa card I have another year on warranty. So now I am waiting until Monday to contact Visa for more details and waiting for the estimate as well .

Do you know if the 2.0 firmware will make the raw files work properly with Rawtherapee 5.9 and Darktable? or even let windows detect the correct resolution on every picture? it does not work properly with 1.11.
Rawtherapee stretches the pixels at the right edge, and changes the resolution, widens the picture. apart from this all adjustments work, including all colour adjustments.
Darktable has issues with resolution too, it detects different resolution both to Rawtherapee and to the actual resolution of the image, and exports a narrower image, and none of the color adjustments work.
But good to know my used A7IV is fine, it's not an sensor issue, as Images aren't messed up in Irfan VIew.
Update: I solved my issue with using LIghtroom. As I wanted more advanced features than Imaging app does, but if you cna't pay for that that's an option.

Recently my Sony a7iv's delete and movie button have stopped responding, I faced this issue a few months back and they returned my camera and it was working fine but still the problem is there.
Does it download raw to the creaters app or is it just jpeg?
I don't think all the older cameras will get the new Creators app. Possibly of new cameras added.
As the app evolves and improves. Imaging Edge Mobile App will remain for the older cameras.

unless the update adds the better flexy screen on the A7V, sounds like a pass for most people
I have had real stability problems with the update. The process itself was smooth, but now my camera has a number of issues, including 1. apsc mode won't hold as it switches off for no reason, 2. metering modes won't stay set and will revert to multi-metering for no reason, 3. auto ISO acts up, such that pic is way overexposed. Really disappointed in the update as camera was rock solid before. Knew to wait, but . . .
And now my different camsets wont load. This is a real mess

@@sleepycatgamer Talked to Sony support. Had to reset the camera and reinstall the update to address stability issues. Camsets simply not compatible so had to redo. Solid now
I use Monitor+ a lot for my external monitor, before I proceed with the firmware update, do you know if the new creators app has any incompatibility issues with 3rd party apps?

Can confirm. Can’t connect to Monitor+ after updating. Kinda wish I waited a bit to see which features we may have lost.. oh well. Creators app does seem to be working for me now; I’ve literally never used Imaging because of how god awful that app performed

issues is that updates get corrupted while downloading or copying to sd card which is why it bricks
Out of curiousity, did you turn on the soft skin tone function on your Sony A7iv while doing the recording?
I think he just has extremely well diffused light he used like a 300w light with a huge soft box

My understanding is that with this update we will no longer have the option of using Imaging Edge Mobile. So, to get the benefits of the new camera control app you must sign up for cloud. Also, this might well be the case for all future firmware updates (getting locked out of IEM and forced into cloud for cam control.) Correct? Is so, not a fan of this change.
Essentially it is replacing imagine edge and giving you more features. Think of it as an updated imaging edge

Once you unpair IEM and pair the A7IV to the creators app you can't pair to the A7IV unless you do the same process. technically you can use it but you need to reverse the process. Makes it pointless pairing to the creators app in the first place. I mean you can make a nice detailed video about it if you like
So it's been one month now. How is it?
I did the update yesterday and now the Sony is in the Service Center to fix the problem.
The LED on the backside is flashing 4x long and 5x short. Even when the cam is not powered on.

I did. Had to have a clean SD card with nothing else on it and it worked great. Tried with many cards that were formatted in camera and they won't recognize in slot one.

My 7iv just got messed up as I did the upgrade right here and now... Now it won't turn on or off, 1.5 hours after the update started. How does it get fixed :( ?
turn off. remove battery. download onto a different sd card. insert battery and new sd card. turn on to resume
Hey Jason, I followed the exact instructions and updated to 1.05 then I tried to update it to 2.0, saw the "execute" button after scrolling all the way down, and then I got a message that said "The target model for the update file is incorrect." I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?
I think there’s another update after 1.05 then you can update to 2.0

You said the only reason you don't use it is for false color and desqueese but the monitor plus has all that plus the ability to apply LUTS
Unfortunately for the time being Monitor + does not seem to work in V2.0

When updating from Ver. 1.01 or earlier, you need to update to Ver. 1.05 before proceeding with the Ver. 2.00 update. Only update to Ver. 2.00 after updating to Ver. 1.05. If you try to update to Ver. 2.00 without updating to Ver. 1.05, an error will occur and you will not be able to update.

Hi Jason, I have a call in to Sony, but hoping that you will have an answer too. I did the update, no problems. Installed the creator’s app. Again no problems. Controlled the camera, no worries. But how do I stop it looking for the camera when not using the app? I have an android phone. I stop the app so nothing is apparently running, but it is still searching for a camera (as shown by a swipe down on the standby screen).
Have you tried turning off Wifi and Blutooth on your phone or tablet, updating its OS and then trying again? I know someone who did that to fix the same.

I want to update my camera's but I heard the latest (2.01 which is the latest one I can find online) takes away the battery percentage on non sony batteries. So I would rather update to 2.0

almost bricked mine, i ended up re-download, and try again, powered off the camera removed battery, just started over, it picked up where it failed or restarted. dodged a bullet. 🙂
I did the update and had no issues. But it didn't unlock any features that made me into a better Photographer. Fix this Sony! I'm tired of being a rank amateur!!
I was hoping some other "fixes" would have been put in the update. I have been filming for the last 3-4 weeks with mine in 60p 4K and I get over heating ALL the time. Yes I know all the "tricks" to have it over heat "less" but dang it is frustrating. Where I live we are going out of Full summer, but my camera has been overheating on every shoot and it is actually not even that "hot" where I am shooting. The A7IV at 60p 4K is just too much for the camera most of the time. I will most likely go back to the FX3 but was trying to wait for the FX3II before I buy it again. Sold mine for more than I paid for it and actually like the A7IV. more except for the over heating problem. The Overall image quality is Better in my mind and the AF is better as well. Only thing I miss from the FX3 is the 12,800 ISO sometimes and it did not over heat ever.

Have you done all the “tricks” and followed them? Specially overheating setting to “high” you should not be getting over heating at all. It’s been a very hot summer here in australia and I have never had the issue

I live in Chile and it is not even that hot here actually, Mostly indoors and yes I have tried every trick, Setting to high, Monitor open, but I get over heating a lot. I could never imagine in a place like Miami or some tropical humid hot place. last week on 2 separate shoots the camera would shut down from over heating. After turning the camera off and on it would work again but it is annoying to say the least. And I am not even shooting in the highest resolution either.
I just updated my ILCE-7M4 and discovered a headache to solve: the Creator's App don't support Brazilian users. So, i can't download photos or videos to smartphone from the camera. I will need to use an notebook ou PC to do that, like the cave men did in the past :////
I have 3 different Sony cameras from different generations, crop and full frame and any Sony software program has to work with all 3.

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Why have none of you content creators tried the Geotagging!!!!!! Oh my! I have no reason to use the new app. I have my own NAS cloud. I don't need to be breast feeding on Sony's cloud.
I have adjusted all the settings and use a dummy battery and this shit still turns off after like 10 minutes in webcam mode and it also did it recording 1080p 60 footage on me indoors after 3 minutes.

@@mcintosh.motors Thank you for contacting us, Sony A7 IV with 2.0 firmware temporarily does not work with wireless connection on Monitor+, we are currently working on this and will roll out a fix update soon.

You're probably totally wrong about doing away with IEM. That camera switched over to the other registration page in IEM with fx30/30/r5.

I unfortunately updated and it was a pain in the butt to get the camera to connect to the app and is still acting wonky. Imaging Edge worked perfectly fine. I was so annoyed by this move by Sony I actually started to really consider switching to Canon. I was also annoyed that this update didn’t bring new capabilities to the camera that should have been there in the first place like bulb timer, focus stacking, improved AF algorithms, etc.. Come on Sony you can do better.

Interesting as I bought an A7IV in Sept 2022 and IEM has never worked for me. Searched so many videos on it to no avail so the different experiences amongst people are intriguing.
I don't understand all the hate. The new app is much more stable than IEM. I figured I had nothing to lose with it's current issue. The new app is much better!
I'm an honestly so disheartened with Sony's lack of info and response on updating the A1. It's completely unacceptable and they should be ashamed. How many times do you need to get called out SONY? It's embarrassing

Hello everyone…be very careful before performing any updates on the SONY A7IV the firmware!
This update firmware from 1.10 to 2.0 broke my Sony A7IV , Sony service and support Canada tried with me by phone to bring it to life with no success and gave me a list of authorized repair dealers to have it repaired at my cost , it’s out of warranty since the 27 of December 2021 and now it’s costing me $902,70 Canadian to have it repaired, ( have to change the "Mother Board " ) Sony says they can’t do nothing for me .

Sony's firmware updates are notoriously unfriendly to do. The fact that there is so much fear and risk taken to update firmware just goes to show how bad it is. In a lot of my other devices, new firmware is exciting because it means more stability and more features. In Sony's case, people wait to see if it bricks the camera, or breaks features. The creators app is not worth upgrading for, and its broken Monitor+ as well, which is far better than the control you get from Creators app.
Still worse than the Monitor+ app :D

@@JasonMorrisphotocinema what I mean is, (example my A7S3) they don't usually keep up with their existing line ups. They don't produce updates like other companies. They want to force you to buy a completely different camera if you want more updated features.
@@LifeGQ oh right. I think you’re being a bit harsh on this one. I completely understand Sony separating the a7siii and the fx3 but the only firmware I don’t understand is the Alpha 1 since flagships are meant to have everything.
Features are what makes the model different. The whole point of Sonys different camera lines
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I completely agree. Especially for the amount of money an A1 costs, it should have it all, at least in firmware after its release. The A7IV has certain features the A1 doesn't, at a fraction of the cost. I don't understand Sony's thinking on this one.
