Someone needs to make a VR game that just lets you explore real world abandoned places no monsters or anything just you and your own fears.

I think video games are perfect for liminal spaces because since I was a child, I have a feeling of "loneliness" when I play, especially "empty" games (without npc's). A feeling that makes me miss humanity, get up from the chair and go after someone to interact. living in a liminal space should be like this

The old 18 Wheels of Steel truck sim games sort of reminded me of this as well. Especially the in game cities felt dead and empty. There was a glitch in the game where you could fall through the ground. You would just fall forever, with the HUD GPS freaking out. The arrow on the GPS would literally grow, and all you would hear is beeping, and text on screen would say "EMERGENCY RESCUE $500 FEE: PRESS F5" or something like that, in blood red letters. You would hear the engine of the truck die out, leaving only the beeping, and you falling and spinning endlessly, and your only escape would be to pay 500 dollars and wake up at a silent auto repair shop. There was such a thing as other truckers in the games, but they would seem dead and shallow, like they were brainwashed or something. Interaction was thoughtless and boring, they didn't even care if you crashed into them. A few low-poly NPC cars littered the streets, driving around city blocks for hours, waiting at each and every traffic light for nothing. In order to make cities seem larger, the game had roads that were under construction. There were a few construction barriers, but not much else. Indeed it was a pretty weak barrier. My 6 year old self decided to drive right around the roadblocks and past some random construction equipment. First off, things seemed pretty normal, a few non-moving cars here and there, nothing much. I rounded a bend to see that the buildings had been replaced with the void. All there was was a road and sidewalk. I kept going right to where the road ended. It led right down deep into a dark blackness, a black darkness, which could consume the player so easily. That game had its flaws, and I had my nightmares. I had nightmares of my grandfather's big rig driving down the highway, slowly sinking into the asphalt, without him noticing. I also dreamed of the old Windows XP PC powering on mid-night, showing only a tractor trailer descending into hell.
But yeah, another source for these videos.

I remember right in the middle of the lockdown I had to go back to my work office in an emergency. What would usually be a well lit space with people working and walking around and telephones ringing frequently, was a dark and silent space accompanied by the subtle blow of the aircon. I was the only one in the entire floor since 90% of people were working from home and had stayed there for about 3 hours. I kinda felt like I was in a survival/horror game going around and completing my work tasks like game objectives to escape the building. Not at all spooky but was a really interesting time.

They're the real menacing birds. Oh yeah, and they make this very low bass noise by their clucking noises, too. I've seen some crazy stuff happen to raccoons that tried to attack their coop. One of the raccoons had a strange purple glow and his hair was standing on end when he was standing 10 meters from the coop, then he got struck by lightning 2.5 meters away. My advice? Focus on core things like player movement, camera movement and sound managers. Other things like adding menu are not required but if you finish with the game and got more time to spend, you can work on things like that.

I want the game to have the unnerving music, but I also want it to be random (meaning serene music sometimes)
And at some point when I’m skilled enough to do it, or when the games ready for it. I’d like a plethora of sounds to be generated into music based on the parameters or seed of the generated area (which would consist of ambience, strange sci-fi noises, metal/industrial flutters and again anything serene)

    • @andrewprahst2529

A bridge, a hallway, malls between opening times. A house after its inhabited, but before it's completely destroyed. Unemployment, stairways, cacoons. The space between the floor boards and the building foundation. The very edge of a city, the doorway of a house.
It's those "in between" places. They are places that are so common, yet are never seen. If you ever stop at one of these locations, you might realize how strange and unfamiliar they are, despite seeing them everyday. You might think, "this doorway has been stepped in 10,000 times, yet nothing has probably ever happened in it. They're places you aren't supposed to be. You aren't supposed to linger there. What will happen if you do?

Liminal spaces, especially when it comes to games always makes me remember this old freaky game called LSD Dream Emulator, along with Yumi Nikki. Both are similar in the sense that you are exploring weird, usually empty places where it definitely seems like someone had been there but are no longer around. I kinda hope more people make games like those two - it would be awesome as hell to have a game where you just explored with no other beings anywhere to be seen.

ngl I got hit with some heavy nostalgia when I heard the Mirror's Edge ambiance. I've probably played through that game 30 times, and I'm just now realizing how much of a liminal space gold mine it is, with all of it's large featureless office buildings and empty malls. Like that's some textbook liminal space and it's everywhere in that game. You could probably make an entire liminal space video just out of Mirror's Edge screenshots.

The Hong Kong levels from the old Hitman games. The giant buildings that surround and tower over your main character (Agent 47) feel claustrophobic and eerie. It doesn’t help that’s there are little to no people around aside from the ones you have to kill, and the strange and dream like music that plays in the levels.
The original Hitman was a weird and janky game, but one thing it was always good at is environmental story telling. The begging mission starts you off escaping a lonely test facility to do deeds for a crazy, lonely and mentally deranged man.

Yume Nikki is pretty much the video game equivalent of exploring liminal spaces. It’s impressive how ahead of it’s time it was in terms of the feelings of aloneness and isolation with familiar-ish places and imagery. To anyone whose a fan of these kind of videos, go play it. It’s free to download, but I believe you can get it on steam and ios/android for phones as well.
