    It was great to see how well you all communicated and seemed to be trained and skilled. I dunno what enjoyment you get out of this, though. At a few spots you pointed the light away and it was evident how pitch black the scene is. That by itself is enough to make me tap out. But your lights. They lit up so little. It wasn’t like you could see much. It didn’t light up the cave so you could enjoy the view. It was only enough to see your line and to move forward. If you can’t see anything then why do it? That is my question in this. I’m not trying to diminish the wonderful video you made. It truly was great. I have mad respect for you and what you do.

      In 1987 Bjørn Olav Steihaug and Ronny Arnesen did their first dive in Plura, in the resurgence. The dived about 100
      meters into the outlet og approach a depth of 31 meter.
      The year after they came back with a bigger diving team, with the aim to get further into the cave. Nobody of them had
      experience with such a big project, and there was not any good team spirit. There was discussions about the goal, how
      to achieve it and generell irritation about the disagreement. Some of the participants had spend a lot of time doing
      training and preparations before hand, but others had not been thinking about diving before they arrived in Plura.
      Among all the projects organized by Ronny Arnesen, this was the most instructive.
      We used an underwaterscooter (Aqua-Zepp) and a homemaid habitat for the decompresion. Two persons could sit in
      dry conditions in the habitat. We had a homemaid communication with the surface and breathed 100 % oxygen i the
      habitat with supply from the surface. In all other situations air as breathing gas and divings suit gas was used. The
      divers reached 485 meters into Plura from the resurgence, and a depth of 36 meters.
      We had an reconnoitre dive in Steinugleflåget as well. The diver reported that big passages continued beyond the sumps

    I understand how dangerous this passion is. knowing how easily things can go wrong, and experienced divers have perished in spite of their many dive hours, do you ever put yourself in that moment of imminent death? I know the goal is to plan your way out of any situation, but those final moments of realization for a diver knowing they simply can not get our of their situation and will die, is a reality for many who never ever saw it happening to them. I don't even go into caves or dive but I find myself considering that moment and how i might feel, what the experience would be for me. Every time you go in you have to know that there's always a CHANCE, so have you ever put yourself in that potential final moment to prepare yourself or is it something you just completely avoid in order to keep yourself from hyper focusing on it? And in the case of the worst, do you have a plan? I ask because I simply can not wrap my head around doing this for fun lol. I commend you all on your bravery and hope you never find yourself in such a position. I just am curious about the general mental state for cave divers since the whole thrill is kinda cheating death.

      DAN Annual Diving Report 2018 stated 169 deaths that year.
      How Do Scuba Divers Die?
      Information and data from the "Diving Medicine for Scuba Divers" showed:
      1% of divers died while they were attempting a rescue.
      5% died while cave diving.
      10% had received advice that they were medically unfit to go diving.
      10% were 'under trained' when they died.
      25% got into difficulty at the surface beforehand.
      50% failed to inflate their buoyancy compensator.
      50% actually died at the surface (not under water).
      86% were alone when they died - diving solo or got separated (e.g. misused the buddy system).
      90% of the victims died with their weight belt still in place (e.g. they failed to release it).
      It seems almost offensive to ask somebody very experienced if they are concerned there is a chance one of the above might occur to them, since a lot of that is just negligence of some sort. I am not a diver so I cannot say how accurate these stats are, but the DAN report is a common reference, I know that much.

    Be good to set up a series of underwater LEDs (parallel-wired) to light up the entire cave length powered by solar plus battery plus grid backup from the surface, so you didn't need flashlights. It would be a great project to set up and illuminate the entire 1km. I think this is possible, though it would take some time to set up.

Perhaps tourists could hang from the ceiling for full effect (or in an actual pool with a controlled current, and specialized headset). • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those are "stage tanks". They're full at the start of the dive and the extra gas is used to extend the penetration. Using the gas from the stage tanks saves the gas in your main tanks (on your back). You can use them at the start, then leave them behind as you go further, so you don't need to drag useless equipment with you. When you return to the exit (or on a later dive) you pick them up again and use them while you bring them out. Sometimes they can also contain different gas mixes used for decompression stops during the exit. You don't need them deep in the cave then.

    • @magaisacult2023
      @magaisacult2023 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Common to use what are called "stage bottles." They are extra tanks that you breath off initially to extend your penetration. You only use 1/3 of your air going in, 1/3 coming out, and always have at least 1/3 to get a buddy out. The stage bottles create a lot of drag, so drop them and pick up on way out.
