    Never even thought about checking your wiper clearance to ensure it will clear rain to give you a clean picture. That advice was worth so much never even thought of it.

    Thumbs up, if only because you're the first person I've seen install a camera in a safe & legal position, where it doesn't impede the view through the windscreen!

    This is pretty much the way I hardwired my dashcam to my 407, I wired another 12 volt socket to a fuse tap of the courtesy light circute and so I could use the power supply that came with the camera. I was trying to keep the cost as low as possible. But in the end I have a very tidy setup like yours.

      Very good guide Would rather watch a complete install step by step, instead of instructions that say just do this do that instead of showing and talking you through everything can be a nightmare.
      I'm an installer and trainer. and aways assume the clients are cluless, what might be obvious to one person may not be obvious to another
      One golden rule when training/giving instructions is always assume they no nothing, and start at the beginning and explain every step

    Nice video. I hope people appreciate how much neater this type of installation is over using the "cigar" type power outlet. I have had this type of setup in my 2015 Genesis using front, rear and two rear mounted diagonally front facing cameras. I even got a compliment from the service techs at the local car dealer on the installation. I think though that the cameras themselves make them nervous.

      That is a point (recording while in maintenance) , thanks for mentioning it. I had a pretty decent result on two cars with wiring the cams on the side frames going under the glove box to the cig. lighter with the standard plug in socket. My lighter shuts off electricity while parking. (No need for me to use parking mode) Way better than lwttingbthe cables hang und done in 45 minutes.

    Thanks for making this guide! Very well thought out parts & video & instructions. I think yours is the "right" way to do this.
    My ghetto way of doing this would be to jam (between the a fuse and contact) a piece of wire to power a female cigarette lighter stowed by fuse box. Plug in the male onto the female. Take the output microUSB wire from the fuse panel area through the "A" pillar & headliner to the camera. This would require extra purchase of only a female cigarette lighter and nothing else.

    The 119v3 is out, $110 so a bit more expensive but as a longtime user of the 119 series I expect my newly purchased 119v3 will work great and it has a hidden feature of H.265 encoding. I like the form factor of these cameras and although theft is low her in our area it blends in nicely with the windshield.

    In July of 2018 I purchased the newly released Viofo A129 Duo. Viofo continues to develope new dash cams, and the A129 Duo is a great improvement. If you want front and rear dash cam foottage, the A129 Duo is the one you want to get.

    • @CraigsDIY

      Yes I've recommended it to a few ppl altho I haven't looked at it myself. The one drawback is it's only 30fps vs the 119's 60fps, which does make a difference for a dash cam.

    Great job. One caution. Once the GPS plug in cable gets old it will start to make the camera intermittent. I had to bypass the GPS mount and plug directly in the camera. This was true for both 119's I have so it is not something that was a fluke. I am about to install another 119 and hope that has been solved. Dielectric grease did not solve the problem thus I think the mount of the GPS is not robust enough to handle the plug in. The camera works well and will let you know when the SD card is shot too by coming on and off acting intermittent. Again nice job!

    Awesome thorough video. I learnt something today. The other thing you can do is use a power cutoff to cut the dash cam off if the battery reached a certain voltage (12.2V is pretty safe) so it'll film while parked but won't kill your battery.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also use a separate battery pack to further save the car battery, but the other problem without a dedicated parking mode is that you will over-write all your driving footage after just a while of parking, e.g. with 3 hrs of the garage wall. I have yet to experiment with the software driven faux parking mode on the new A119 firmware, if it works ok then I will be tempted to look into a battery system.

    • @KR7PT
      @KR7PT 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Craig's DIY Car Living in Australia, discharging lithium ion batteries in 70°C+ in the car sounds like a recipe for disaster lol. I'm looking at getting the A119 Pro, and although I'm not likely to use the parking mode in my area it's nice to know that it's an option. You could also put in a little switch so in your garage you could switch the camera off, or just straight unplug it

    Hi curious, most or my camara is 5 volt. So 12 volt would over power camara and cook it. Are the usb connections you shown step down from 12 volt to 5 volt? I would like to feed the camara off the interior light power, the cigar plug is too large to fit under light fixture whereas the usb would fit nicely if in fact it provides the 5 volts required, not the 12 volt as the cigar lighter provides. Thanks for the video. Peace. Andy usa

    I also used the ACC power on the radio with the original adapter from the 119S V2. Problems is, the ACC gets switched off when you start. So sometimes , when the camera is not fully booted up,you start, it looses power for 1 second and gets power again. Then the camera switches off and not on again.
    The timing must be perfect to do get that right , but as my camera is behind my mirror also, I dont always look at it. So it can sometimes be off when you think its recording.
    I then installed a diode and capasitor to keep power for a few seconds, but the camera does not like the slow lowering of the voltage. Will update my circuit later.
    Thanx for the video.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking that might be a problem but it works for me. I'm not sure why your camera is staying off though; if it has power, it should be on, unless switched off, regardless. Maybe there's something wrong with it.

    • @daveshongkongchinachannel

      I have the same issue with my camera which is currently just plugged directly into the 12V power supply. I'm a total idiot when it comes to anything electrical but seems there must be some kind of circuit that cuts the power to all other feeds for a brief second to ensure maximum battery power for startup. My camera must get confused partway through it's bootup sequence and doesn't recover in time for when the power comes back. Doesn't happen every time but quite often.
      Great overall video though and nice neat installation using minimum distance from power source to camera.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suggest you buy Viofo's hardwire kit, it's not expensive, that is intended to provide proper ignition control and thus parking mode with that system. It has a battery conserving function that can be configured liberally or conservatively. Then just give it all to a competent auto electrician. Yes I would avoid the quick lube places (for everything, including lube).

    How did you shorten that USB to cable? Only ? I have. @ 16:28.

      I replaced it with a shorter one, about 30cm I believe.

    This may be a silly question, but how do you know which way a fuse would go into the fusebox? I was poking around with my multimeter, and I had one probe on the chassis for ground and I poked the live/hot into both terminals of the fuse and both were reading 12v, so does it matter which way a fuse would go into this slot?

    Thanks for the tips on where to place a dash cam, especially avoiding where the wipers don't reach. I'm not so sure about installing it with 3M tape over the tinting, wouldn't that risk lifting that tinting if ever you decided to remove the bracket?

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe, I would be careful. They give you a piece of string in the box, it's to use as a garrotte so you cut the pad then you can scrape off the adhesive and clean with alcohol. I already did it once!

    I would like to know why are they install that dashcam behind the rearview mirror instead under or next to rearview mirror?

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I want it both hidden (from outside view) to the extent possible, and not obscuring the driver's vision, and looking through wiped screen.

    So when switched power is removed the camera will go into Parkmode?

      The dashcam he is using does not have a parking mode.

      The camera shown here doesn't have a proper parking mode. Try this video instead, which shows a more complete install with a camera that supports parking: th-cam.com/video/bAE4gbzCXJE/w-d-xo.html

    What is that cable to the mirror? maybe is it possible to steal power from it to dash cam?

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's for the self-dimming mirror yes, but it is permanent live (up until the power save relay kicks off), so not suitable for this installation.

    Did you take that film off the camera lens? Good video thanks, but seems a complicated setup. why not just take the case off the cigarette lighter and solder the fuse blade tap cable to the board? Then you'll only need to buy one cable instead of three.

    • @CraigsDIY
      @CraigsDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it's off :) Gotta leave it on until finished otherwise I'll be sure to get a nice fingerprint on it...
      I'm not sure exactly what you mean but going to the cigarette lighter is farther than the glove box fuse board, plus I want it independent and movable... you could make up one cable but what I've done was just easier frankly, and it has the advantage of being modular.

      Craig's DIY Car I meant using the USB adapter which came with the camera. Nothing wrong with your approach, just a bit expensive to buy three things if you could simply use the fuse blade adapter and solder to the board inside the USB adapter you got with the camera. Anyway thanks for the video

      I see, yes could do that, then again the new adapter and cable was only ~$10... and the charger adapter will be handy for other use anyway.
