    I thought the Soviet Union's cultural bigwigs were totally opposed to jazz. I am amazed that the jazz idiom was so well understood by the band.

    What? What did you think the Tchaikovsky competition was for? It was to prove Soviets were better than Americans. Ironically an American won the first one (Van Cliburn)

    The Soviet Union probably didn't care as long as they could play jazz better than the Americans

    Yea it was to prove the Soviets were better than the Americans. They were, in a few fields, with a few top people. They wanted to catch up with and surpass capitalism. They achieved that - they overtook capitalism in collapsing (Soviets 1989, life expectancy declining by 10 yrs, U.S. 2008, life expectancy declining by a few months).
