[TAS] Pokemon Emerald (J) in

    This is my TAS (tool-assisted speedrun) of the Japanese version of Pokemon Emerald.
    206150 frames @ 59.73 fps = 57:31.51
    Note that this encoding contains an additional easter egg after what would normally be the final input, and is thus longer. It also includes the credits sequence, before this easter egg.
    Also oof, there's a typo in one of the strings, so I'll probably fix that.

      It's the one game I've played enough times that I feel I could speedrun, but then I see all these runs manipulating RNG with frame-perfect inputs and stuff and there's no way I'm doing that.

    Man if only real speed runners could abuse the pomeg glitch so badly it creates a entirely new battle at the end of the game with a Clefable Shuckle hybrid. That would be pretty cool.

    What exactly do all the overlays mean? I can see a frame counter, time, and RNG state, but what about the other stuff?

      First line: frame counter and time (based on frame counter at the gba's framerate)
      Second line: RNG cycle counter and 32-bit RNG state
      Foe: Personality value of the enemy Pokemon, I look at this mainly for manipulating Abra, Wally's ralts
      Tile: tile transition state, useful for determining the frames encounters can happen on
      Addr: only really used at the very end, it's the address I'm currently writing to with inputs
      The green text next to health bars in battle is the enemy's current HP
      Turn: when this is below 3333, quick claw let's marshtomp go first
      Dmg: damage done by an attack and whether it was a critical hit (this area of memory is also used for exp and some other things)

    Hi! I found ya through Chickasaurus.
    I'm curious to what actually us possible in emerald with ACE. Can you do more than in RGB or are there actually limitations that really restrict you for certain things?

      Not as knowledgable as the OP is, but as I understand it, the main issues for RSE ACE setups have been available space to write the payload in, and viability without an external device. It seems like those problems may have been solved here, but from what I can tell jumping around the video, the payload here is a bootstrap written in the box names that somehow allows the author to write the intended payload via inputs. It solves the payload space issues but it's definitely not RTA/human/console viable.
      EDIT: However, the save file from merrp that Chickasaurus showed off is much more human viable - the payload there is written in pokemon names and is able to be spread across multiple boxes, giving a pretty large amount of space to write the payload in a manner a human is easily able to do.

      It depends on how much effort you're willing to put in! The box names have room for 18 ARM instructions on English. That can do a lot, as shown by my map warp payloads. But for something more complicated you'd need to set up pokemon nicknames (where you can either use half of the nickname as a jump, or change the trainer name) and arrange them in the boxes, and use the box names to jump to them. That'd give you a lot of space!

    Idk if anyone's pointed this out, but at 57:28, the jibberish text says "Ki's r e ddd r e ddd (something)" while the sprite is tinted red from some kinda glitch (that I don't know about). Was skipping through and noticed this.

      A.C.E is hard to explain and I'm not a speedrunner but I'll try my best:
      A.C.E, Stands for Arbitrary Code Execution is where you execute code in ways the game shouldn't do, it's uses another giltch call Pomeg berry glitch to do A.C.E, the pomeg berry glitch is where you use a berry on a pokemon with 1 hp while all of your other pokemon are dead, it kills the pokemon but at the same time it doesn't, if you go into battle instead of throw out your "dead" pokemon it brings a lv0 Question mark, you can't fight with it cuz It has 0 stats on everything including hp and have no moves but you can bypass the battle with a Poke doll or Poke toy, there is more about the pomeg glitch right here: (bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pomeg_glitch), now the glitch The TAS did.
      The TAS Rename the PC box specifically nicknames which modify the Pokemon moves animation then TAS place it starter in the nicknamed box 2, go to the grass, use a pomeg berry on Abra for the pomeg glitch, then TAS get into a Battle and check poochyena, used a poke toy to get out of battle, go back to the pokemon center and take out their starter (which is now a bad egg), rename box 3, 4 and 5 specifically, go back to the grass, turn on Battle scene, get into a battle and use a glitch move, the game tries to play the animation but can't since it's a glitch move, the game freaks out and put the player at the Hall of Fame
      That is the best I can do, I am maybe wrong about somethings but Like I just said, I'm not a speedrunner

      So what WalkingTerror said is pretty accurate.
      Basically, Pomeg glitch lets us fight with a KOed party and send out an empty slot (the question mark). Because the game then thinks we have zero pokemon, in the summary screen we can select more than 6 Pokemon by pressing Up (it happens very fast in the run)
      When doing this, the game treats memory in the PC as a Pokemon and calculates a checksum, as an anti-cheat mechanism. If the checksum doesn't match it flips some bits in that block of data.
      By position marshtomp in box 2 and timing the encounter, I flip a bit in its personality value (check Bulbapedia!), Which changes the order of its data. This makes its EV data be read as it's move data and lets us get glitch moves!
      Each move has an animation script, basically a list of actions that it does, like showing a sprite or launching a sound task. For some glitch moves, this script is in ROM rather than RAM and by writing a nickname on wingull we can run custom code (written in the box names)
      That custom code then serves as an input loop that lets me write bytes into memory using the buttons, and I use that to warp to the hall of fame and embed the custom Lanette event in the save

      If you look closely, sometimes I'll stop moving for a single frame or two in between tiles, so that the RNG advances a bit and ends up not giving an encounter. Encounters only occur with a certain random chance when you cross the center of a tile, so if you time it right it's possible to just avoid doing so when the RNG is in a state that'd cause one to occur.
