As a person who hasn't "gamed" in decades, and had never owned a handheld console, I got the 35xxH just yesterday after watching this guy's channel couple weeks ago. I got it as a gift (wink) for my kid for his b'day. This guy's channel is very addictive and I might have to buy a few more retro handhelds with the money I didn't get to spend in my younger yrs!
Do ittt. I capped it at 2, Anbernic R35Vwhatever the hell it's called and a Rog Ally. But if I didn't have a gaming laptop + Xbox etc etc 😄 it's fun for sure to get more 🤓
They're great plus if you get another one you can multiplayer with your kid. Also look up the MUOS custom firmware as its on the cusp of being strictly superior to the stock os, with many more improvements to come

It’s great that kids have a lot of ways to emulate so many generations of games for a relative low price. But for the rest of us… do you end up getting addicted to buying a lot of different machines or at this point you just get the original hardware and mod it?
To be fair, they also told you the light bleed on the RG Cube was fixed and then still shipped the units. I’d strongly suggest taking a verify first approach when discussing anything regarding Anbernic’s promises.

I love the 35xxh and literally just got the 28xx in the mail yesterday because of an AliExpress sale. Driving me nuts because I love the RG Cube but hate the 1x1 screen. This is like that but with a better screen size. Thank goodness it doesn’t have the Cube’s processor or I’d be applying for a loan at this point!
For old re fans it's usually the other way around - if it fails the contra test = easier to play and turn. I noticed that playing re1,2,3 and silent hill on anbernic devices is MUCH easier on my thumb than trying to run and turn on miyoo mini/stream deck. Those diagonals can take excessive force sometimes, especially on steam deck
I keep hoping for more greens, bonus for hot pink accents on green. Come on China, sell me a Wicked handheld before the movie drops at the end of November
I imagine it’s because of the RGB. RGB lights rarely look great on transparent devices, especially when what they’ve made visible is diffused. Personally I don’t care for RGB lights around my sticks, but it does look nice in promo shots, and it’s another feature they can slap on the AliExpress listing
Really cool to see! Seeing everyone recording 35x footage claw gripping the device it just didn't seem so comfortable to play for longer than 15 minutes, but this may actually be the one. Would love to see your review part two 😊
Love the design and button layout. Wish it had a 960x720 4" screen and that they kept the specs from the 405M or went with the specs from the 556/cube. Dual boot would be nice and a 4,000-5,000 battery. It would be nice if Anbernic made a new device with the screen from the KTR1 and the 556/cube specs. Time to grab a snack and a drink and watch my favorite reviewer do his thing!
I think anbernic should make a feature where you can order the devices but with different analog sticks like having Japanese PS1 analog stick instead of having the same Nintendo switch joycon analog stick for the 4728438th time.
Anbernic is killing it with this line, the same chipset but in almost any form factor you want and the shared custom firmware prograss across the board, however I wish they used a slightly more powerful chip and better analogs. These are able to run n64 and Dreamcast fairly well, but there are still issues and coupled with the cardinal snapping and dead zone on the sticks, it makes these devices pretty much capled at PS1 and below, and there are just so many devices that can already do that. I switched from the 35xx to the 405m and Mario 64 went from so frustrating that I thought the controls had just aged terribly on the 35xx, to getting all 120 stars on the 405m.
@@ktheitguyOr pay the same $65-ish and get the superior RGB10MAX3 (non-pro). I do think the RG40XX-H will sell well once it drops below $50 since the $55 Trimui Smart Pro has a slightly stronger chipset, Vulcan support, and larger 720p widescreen.
Just noticed how good the new cameras look, not sure when this transition was made but I can really tell in the parts showing you talking that the quality is improved.
I really wish Anbernic had put the square Anbernic Cube display in this model, then this 4:3 screen in the Cube for all the better consoles that it can play.
Thankfully, they're so affordable that for those of us with a little bit of means, we can play Goldilocks until we find the one we like, and figure out ways to gift it to a deserving friend or relative who was really into retro games. After I purchased the RG35XX Plus, I gave my original RG35XX to my childhood friend (from 1st grade!) with whom I used to play lots of games from Intellivision, NES, SNES, GB, N64, GBA, VirtualBoy, and GameCube games with growing up. A lot of happiness comes from being able to do that.

Just want to add one bit of perspective here: another controller that flat out fails the Contra test is the NES controller. It's a bit more nuanced, you do have to press hard on the corner of the D-PAD, simply rocking left and right gently won't throw a diagonal. But if you're trying, you can easily do it with thumb on the down arrow.
Do you have this device? I could really use a Contra player perspective. My favorite game and not the only one where accidental diagonals make a game utterly unplayable. Is this one good enough to play contra?
Accidental diagonals are worse than having to be deliberate tonget your diagonals, so I don't consider that a failure at all. What you're describing sounds perfect.

Nice vid, and cool device. Only comment i have is i dont understand why youtubers feel the need to say these manufacturers are "shady" for including roms, while also making guides for how people can add their own roms and bios with guidance to google for them. If anbernic or powkiddy want to include roms, thats their legal risk to take. It just seems weird to judge them morally when like 99.99% of the community is adding roms or bios that they didnt dump themselves, nor do they even own the originals. It's obviously a legal issue but i cant call them shady when i'm getting roms from the same sources they likely did. Portmaster ports are a tiny bit different since people do often get the legit files from a steam copy they purchased, but i see tons of community members searching for pirated dumps of those files too, so they often just buy the game out of impatience and having no other choice as opposed to trying to be ethical.
I just got my RG35XX H a couple weeks ago… I think, for me, it comes down to this: when I first beheld my purple 35XXH, I immediately fell in love with it. I think I audibly “squee”’d. It’s such a blast from the past, and I had a ton of fun playing “A Link to the Past” on it. I’m not seeing that nostalgic factor with the 40XX H… sure, the bigger screen is a plus, and the ergonomics. But it doesn’t have that “squee”ability. And if I want a bigger, more comfortable screen, well, I already have my Odin 2. Maybe it’s copium, but I think I’m good with what I’ve got for now.
That might be copium brother =P For the gameboy style models, absolutely. I think the SP is nostalgic as hell, the 40XX-V is beautiful, but all of these horizontals are kind of average aesthetics. Some are butt fugly, but 35XX-H and 40XX-H both look fine. Neither looks nostalgic in the slightest.
I already have the RG35xxH and it fits nicely in my bag even with the hard case. I always wanted a bigger screen and more power because I was using the Powkiddy V90 before and it just can't handle some of my favourite arcade titles. That's the main reason why I got the RG35xxH. I was also eyeing for the Powkiddy RGB30 but I heard there is a charging problem. The cube is nice but I don't need something with that much power because I just play arcade and maybe some DS games. This RG40xxH Is perfect! Thanks for the info in this video.

Well, I was hyped for this release, but the details of the device and the recent problems made me closer to trimui than before. Got mine rg35xx h today and it came with drift right out of the box.
Literally bought a 35XXH yesterday, it hasn't even arrived yet, and then I see this. Oh well, I wanted it for a trip I'm taking next week to give me something to do while flying.

I have the RG35XX H and I love it. The new one is great but it has the same performance/ chipset of the previous device. I just wait at least a month if Anbernic release an improved version of this one. CFW are great too.

i really like it, and seriously consider making it my first gaming hand held. I would rather have something like an Odin 2 or Pocket 4 , but since i don't know how much/little i will end up using it , the RG40XX seems like a good device to test the waters with . If all else fails , i can just hook it up to the TV and a Hori Fight Stick mini and use it as a console for arcade games from my childhood

anbernic also said that the retail units of the cube wouldnt have the light bleed issues either and we saw how that turned out. dont claim its a solved issue untill we know for sure they are bothering to remove the ports for real.

This seems like a clear upgrade over the horizontal RG35---I just don't know many people are in the market for a 4:3 horizontal device. Glad you guys are eatin' good tho
Man I really appreciate the discussion about integer scaling and the caveats to the SNES not scaling that great, even though this is a 4:3 device. If I could have my way I'd love a 5 inch hi density 1:1 from ambernic, like 1080x1080 or something wild like that.

I think the 4" screen is the ideal size. Most of the people who grew up with SNES and Genesis are now over 40 and our eyesight aint' what it used to be.

I have a similar concern. I want a 4:3 4" screen, but it's not urgent, and knowing Anbernic, I feel like I should wait quietly for a few months to see what else they churn out.

It's honestly IMO sexy that they don't care about copyright laws. If you can get away with not caring then there's little to no reason to care. Legality isn't morality.
UPDATE: As it turns out, Anbernic customer service is on point! Within a few hours of sending a message on aliexpress, they replied. After some back and forth as well as a video detailing the issue, they had their technicians look into it. For anyone who runs into their left bumper sticking or not working at all, remove the shell and the battery. You should see a small foam rectangle wrapped in silver mesh glued to the pcb. You can either cut the protuding bit so the battery is flush, or take out the screws for the pcb, be gentle with the wires and ribbon cables and slowly take the pad off the pcb. Problem solved, no more sticking or not registering. Thanks Anbernic! Original: So I just got mine in but the left bumper is a mess. Out of the box it wouldn't register at all, so I took the back off and the left trigger assembly to see if the bumper was making contact with the internal button, which it was. Low and behold with the back off, the bumper worked perfectly in the io test. During reassembly, when screwing in the shell screw near the left bumper, it would cause the bumper to remain activated. So I took it apart once more, it works perfectly again, and this time, I left that screw loose, and it works mostly, but will still lock up occasionally lock up and remain that way till I open it again. Obviously that's not acceptable, so now I'm waiting to see how good Anbernics customer service is on aliexpress, yay.
RG40XX comes with 4.0 inch screen and dual RGB lightning, but the console comes with a 3200mAh battery. Makes no sense, it should have been at least 3500mAh. I don't see 6 hours of lifetime no this thing, maybe 5 h. We can assume the RG35XX Plus, H and SP can easily last 7 hours due to 3.5 inch screens and no rgb lights.
Always interesting how similar most of these devices are. I got my RG405V a few months ago and I think until something releases that vastly outperforms it for a similar price, I'll stick to my "chunky gameboy" as I like to call it. Still I enjoy watching these videos, thanks for your thourough breakdowns of these. :D
Yes, these cheaper devices are a significant downgrade from your RG405V. Your next step-up is something like the RP4/Pro with accessory grip. The best sub $80 device today is the RGB10MAX3 (non-pro) IMHO.
This really reminds me of my trimui pro. The rgb around the sticks, stacked triggers, the overall shape but with just a slightly narrower screen. Honestly i would've picked this up over the trimui if it has released sooner
17:53 With RetroArch video option set to integer (height) scaling and "core providec" aspect ratio (SNES and NES typically have 8:7 PAR), and with sharp-bilinear shader, you can get integer scaled pixel height ("scanlines") and a very good sharp but not shimmery image, with the trade off being a slight black frame around it. I'd say it's a good trade, and have always used this setting on several handhelds of the same resolution I've used
I dont intend to bring negativity, sometimes theres stuff you need, sometimes you feel the need to buy stuff but in reality you dont need. Instead of buying the same thing in 5 different sizes, turn around and buy your wife something pretty, or something needeed in the house.

Why couldn't this have the 1:1 screen? I'm very interested in a higher quality Rgb30, but not for the $150 price of the Cube. If the 40XXH were 1:1, that would really differentiate it from the 35XXH and fill a need. As is, this seems like a device without a need.

So many anbernic devices it does get kinda dizzying to buy but i do love the commitment to reviewing all of these.

After I purchased the RG35XX Plus, I gave my original RG35XX to my childhood friend (from 1st grade!) with whom I used to play lots of games from Intellivision, NES, SNES, GB, N64, GBA, VirtualBoy, and GameCube games with growing up.
A lot of happiness comes from being able to do that.

Just want to add one bit of perspective here: another controller that flat out fails the Contra test is the NES controller. It's a bit more nuanced, you do have to press hard on the corner of the D-PAD, simply rocking left and right gently won't throw a diagonal. But if you're trying, you can easily do it with thumb on the down arrow.
Do you have this device? I could really use a Contra player perspective. My favorite game and not the only one where accidental diagonals make a game utterly unplayable.

Accidental diagonals are worse than having to be deliberate tonget your diagonals, so I don't consider that a failure at all. What you're describing sounds perfect.

Nice vid, and cool device. Only comment i have is i dont understand why youtubers feel the need to say these manufacturers are "shady" for including roms, while also making guides for how people can add their own roms and bios with guidance to google for them. If anbernic or powkiddy want to include roms, thats their legal risk to take. It just seems weird to judge them morally when like 99.99% of the community is adding roms or bios that they didnt dump themselves, nor do they even own the originals. It's obviously a legal issue but i cant call them shady when i'm getting roms from the same sources they likely did. Portmaster ports are a tiny bit different since people do often get the legit files from a steam copy they purchased, but i see tons of community members searching for pirated dumps of those files too, so they often just buy the game out of impatience and having no other choice as opposed to trying to be ethical.
I just got my RG35XX H a couple weeks ago… I think, for me, it comes down to this: when I first beheld my purple 35XXH, I immediately fell in love with it. I think I audibly “squee”’d. It’s such a blast from the past, and I had a ton of fun playing “A Link to the Past” on it.
I’m not seeing that nostalgic factor with the 40XX H… sure, the bigger screen is a plus, and the ergonomics. But it doesn’t have that “squee”ability. And if I want a bigger, more comfortable screen, well, I already have my Odin 2.

That might be copium brother =P For the gameboy style models, absolutely. I think the SP is nostalgic as hell, the 40XX-V is beautiful, but all of these horizontals are kind of average aesthetics. Some are butt fugly, but 35XX-H and 40XX-H both look fine. Neither looks nostalgic in the slightest.

I already have the RG35xxH and it fits nicely in my bag even with the hard case. I always wanted a bigger screen and more power because I was using the Powkiddy V90 before and it just can't handle some of my favourite arcade titles. That's the main reason why I got the RG35xxH. I was also eyeing for the Powkiddy RGB30 but I heard there is a charging problem. The cube is nice but I don't need something with that much power because I just play arcade and maybe some DS games. This RG40xxH Is perfect! Thanks for the info in this video.

Well, I was hyped for this release, but the details of the device and the recent problems made me closer to trimui than before. Got mine rg35xx h today and it came with drift right out of the box.

Literally bought a 35XXH yesterday, it hasn't even arrived yet, and then I see this. Oh well, I wanted it for a trip I'm taking next week to give me something to do while flying.
We really need more options in the 3:2 aspect ratio. This would be the perfect spot between 4:3 and 16:9 games.

I have the RG35XX H and I love it. The new one is great but it has the same performance/ chipset of the previous device. I just wait at least a month if Anbernic release an improved version of this one. CFW are great too.

i really like it, and seriously consider making it my first gaming hand held. I would rather have something like an Odin 2 or Pocket 4 , but since i don't know how much/little i will end up using it , the RG40XX seems like a good device to test the waters with .
If all else fails , i can just hook it up to the TV and a Hori Fight Stick mini and use it as a console for arcade games from my childhood

anbernic also said that the retail units of the cube wouldnt have the light bleed issues either and we saw how that turned out. dont claim its a solved issue untill we know for sure they are bothering to remove the ports for real.

Great video! totally unrelated but I saw you were wearing an Operation Ivy shirt in the last NerdNestPodcast video and I just wanted to say thats really freakin cool! Such an obscure band to see represented. I'm far too young to have ever seen them live but I have seen Rancid (Who they sorta became) a few times and every now and then Green Day will play the Operation Ivy song Knowledge at their shows. Man I really appreciate the discussion about integer scaling and the caveats to the SNES not scaling that great, even though this is a 4:3 device. If I could have my way I'd love a 5 inch hi density 1:1 from ambernic, like 1080x1080 or something wild like that.

I think the 4" screen is the ideal size. Most of the people who grew up with SNES and Genesis are now over 40 and our eyesight aint' what it used to be.
Basically "TriMui smart pro" but 4:3 aspect ratio.
Anbernic has a proper sleep mode that doesn't drain the batter much at all.
I'm still hopeful that you'll complete the highway stage of Megaman X someday, Russ.

Anbernic releases so many variations of handhelds, I ususally wait a year or 2 inbetween.
Why do I get a feeling that there will be a plus model for this, something like a more powerful chipset and/or a bit larger battery.
I have a similar concern. I want a 4:3 4" screen, but it's not urgent, and knowing Anbernic, I feel like I should wait quietly for a few months to see what else they churn out.
Thank you for the shake test! Bummer about the loud shoulder buttons and heat issue tho. Been waiting on a bigger screen (honestly don’t know how people can put up w smaller screens than this), but these flaws are deal breakers.
It's honestly IMO sexy that they don't care about copyright laws. If you can get away with not caring then there's little to no reason to care. Legality isn't morality.
UPDATE: As it turns out, Anbernic customer service is on point! Within a few hours of sending a message on aliexpress, they replied. After some back and forth as well as a video detailing the issue, they had their technicians look into it. For anyone who runs into their left bumper sticking or not working at all, remove the shell and the battery. You should see a small foam rectangle wrapped in silver mesh glued to the pcb. You can either cut the protuding bit so the battery is flush, or take out the screws for the pcb, be gentle with the wires and ribbon cables and slowly take the pad off the pcb. Problem solved, no more sticking or not registering. Thanks Anbernic!
Original: So I just got mine in but the left bumper is a mess. Out of the box it wouldn't register at all, so I took the back off and the left trigger assembly to see if the bumper was making contact with the internal button, which it was. Low and behold with the back off, the bumper worked perfectly in the io test. During reassembly, when screwing in the shell screw near the left bumper, it would cause the bumper to remain activated. So I took it apart once more, it works perfectly again, and this time, I left that screw loose, and it works mostly, but will still lock up occasionally lock up and remain that way till I open it again. Obviously that's not acceptable, so now I'm waiting to see how good Anbernics customer service is on aliexpress, yay.
RG40XX comes with 4.0 inch screen and dual RGB lightning, but the console comes with a 3200mAh battery. Makes no sense, it should have been at least 3500mAh. I don't see 6 hours of lifetime no this thing, maybe 5 h. We can assume the RG35XX Plus, H and SP can easily last 7 hours due to 3.5 inch screens and no rgb lights.
Always interesting how similar most of these devices are. I got my RG405V a few months ago and I think until something releases that vastly outperforms it for a similar price, I'll stick to my "chunky gameboy" as I like to call it. Still I enjoy watching these videos, thanks for your thourough breakdowns of these. :D
Yes, these cheaper devices are a significant downgrade from your RG405V. Your next step-up is something like the RP4/Pro with accessory grip. The best sub $80 device today is the RGB10MAX3 (non-pro) IMHO.
I wouldnt buy these devices if they didn't come with games.
This really reminds me of my trimui pro. The rgb around the sticks, stacked triggers, the overall shape but with just a slightly narrower screen. Honestly i would've picked this up over the trimui if it has released sooner

17:53 With RetroArch video option set to integer (height) scaling and "core providec" aspect ratio (SNES and NES typically have 8:7 PAR), and with sharp-bilinear shader, you can get integer scaled pixel height ("scanlines") and a very good sharp but not shimmery image, with the trade off being a slight black frame around it. I'd say it's a good trade, and have always used this setting on several handhelds of the same resolution I've used
I dont intend to bring negativity, sometimes theres stuff you need, sometimes you feel the need to buy stuff but in reality you dont need. Instead of buying the same thing in 5 different sizes, turn around and buy your wife something pretty, or something needeed in the house.
Honestly agree with you on anbernic saturating the market. There's to many models and little to no big differences between them i feel.
Too bad it doesn't have more performance than the RG35XX H....

Why couldn't this have the 1:1 screen?
I'm very interested in a higher quality Rgb30, but not for the $150 price of the Cube. If the 40XXH were 1:1, that would really differentiate it from the 35XXH and fill a need. As is, this seems like a device without a need.
