- Testing the Speer Gold Dot G2 ammunition in 9mm and .45 ACP+P. The 9mm is a 147 gr JHP rated at 1,020 FPS and the .45 ACP+P is a 230 gr JHP rated at 950 FPS. I do a 10% Clear Ballistics gel test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...
Interesting thing here, this 147 gr 9mm G2 averaged 1,024 FPS in this 5" pistol. In a different test the original 147 gr 9mm Gold Dot averaged 1,022 FPS in this 5" pistol.
As someone who carries a 45 caliber pistol everyday for duty and EDC with Fed HST bullets, this one looks like another win for the 45ACP!
What do you carry?
@timrobinson6573
Glock 21, 30S, 41, Dan Wesson Specialist, Kimber Custom RL Optics Ready, and Colt Lightweight Combat Commander.
@@Stoney_AKA_James might be easier to list what you don't carry 😂
I carried 45 acp, 40 S&W, 9mm, .357, .38 and .380 at some point on or off duty. Sounds crazy but I shoot .45 acp best. It's recoil seems more of a push rear ward. Loads were HST, Gold Dot, Golden Saber even Silver tip in .357 mag. Retired and disabled today and carry mostly .45 acp G30 gen4, S&W Shield 9mm, Colt Defender Lightweight stainless .45 acp and S&W 638 .38 Special and +p. G19 3rd gen. 9 mm.
Of those G30 and Shield 9mm cover most. Grip angle has usually made the difference in pistols I prefer. That said a hit with a .22 LR beats a miss with a 44 mag. My experience has been to carry what you shoot accurate and is reliable with decent penetration.
Thank you for your service.
I love that you started putting a photo of the ammo and the weapon used in your slow motion portions. Keep up the great work man
Thanks
I agree 👍
@@brandiwynter some of it is more difficult as I have to find an appropriate photograph or I have to edit my thumbnail photos into a transparent photo to keep doing it this way, but it's also easier in that I don't have to think about spelling anything correctly lol
I've never seen a gold dot test that good. I'm impressed with this round. I can't wait to see how the 40 s&w works since that's what I use.
And yes, I am aware of the G2 "Carry Gun" version of this ammo, but in the standard G2 there are only 3 calibers with one variety each. I may test some of their G2 Carry Gun ammo at some point.
I would really appreciate it if you do test the “carry gun” versions. Thanks for all the work and time that you put into your tests.
I suspected the 9mm cartridge would perform nearly identically to the 45acp. As long as both bullets are constructed identically and velocity is similar, they should be on an even field. Very interesting video. Two thumbs up. 👍👍
One of two of my favorite gel testers...love your tests...Awesome stuff once again..Thank you
You have put together a great series of tests. Quick and to the point. Gold Dot G2 looks very good. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of either caliber.
Good test Sam. I'd have no problem carrying that G2 .45acp.
Great comparison/demo. 👍
Thanks for another great informative video. I have a 1911 and a 9 mm. Love them both now I have good information to go with them. Thank you.😅😅
Thank you
Another great video. I agree with your opinion on 9 vs 45 stopping power. Both did well in your test. I will be on the lookout for the 45. Thank you, Sam! Stay warm and safe out there. I watch another channel using your real world test, you're the o.g.
Thanks for watching
Both look good !
Hell yeah 45 killed it buying those. Thnx u the man gunz
Thanks, those are my most often carried calibers.
I love your videos. I have been buying ammo based on your vids and it’s so important to see ammo ballistics before you buy and avoid gimmicks and marketing that many ammo manufacturers try to fool you with. I started buying 9mm Federal HST +P because of your vids and the performance it has shown.
Thank you
Good to see good results. Good options overall. Thanks.
Impressive test. My next ammo purchase… thanks Sam.
GS. Another good video and shooting. That looks like really good ammo. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Those performed VERY similarly. Both did well. Wouldn’t hesitate to pack either one of these 👍
The test barrels have a much tighter chamber thats why they get higher velocities. A carry gun has a spec chamber but on the side of reliability
When I test all sorts of ammo and get rated velocity, then one ammo doesn't...That explanation doesn't make much sense.
So what guns get rated? Same ones you a have today? Be more specific…..so whats your explanation , they’re lying? I am just throwing out possibilities no reason to be chippy. I will also tell you test barrels are inherently different than those used in production guns….
Another really good test. G2 worked well.
Gotta test the .40 S&W! Got me excited to see the results!
And some shorter barrel tests all around for all 3! Could even do all 3 in a single video since you only get the one choice in ammo per cartridge.
Looks like great ammo! Thanx Sam. 👍🏻
Great information
Solid as usual brotha.
Solid performance all around. There's definitely a resemblance to the Federal HST. That .45acp, even with a bit of over penetration, was extremely impressive. Any plans to test these out of a 4.6" or similar length barrel? I'm betting these might not do so well out of a 3" barrel but I'd love to see it some day.
Great video as always and very informative, much thanks!
Thanks. I plan to pretty soon get an M&P Shield in .45 ACP for testing, but with that there's a G2 Carry Gun version I would be testing.
@@GunSam Oh yeah, you mentioned the other ammo in the video, sorry about that.
Shield 45 acp is a great gun. You'll love it !@@GunSam
Thanks GunSam for treating us to something new and exciting! I look forward to you testing the new HST .44 Magnum offering too!👍🙏❤💯
I didn't even realize that was a thing lol.
@@GunSam New for 2025! I recall it being a 230 grain projectile. It sounds interesting.
Awesome timing, Gun Sam. I was just seeing these for sale online and was wondering if any of my favorite G-Tubers had any tests on it. That 45 looks awesome. Thanks 👍
Just for the hell of it perhaps get a decibel meter and determine how Loud each particular round is. Knowing how Loud each round is can be quite important considering firing of a round in tight enclosed spaces can very well give you permanent hearing damage. I for one have an old injury that greatly diminished my hearing in the right ear and must therefore be very careful with my precious Left ear which has been pulling double duty for all these years.
Thank you for bringing this up! Most reviewers never mention it, saying "WHAT?" I only use .38 Special +P indoors as .357 Magnum produces bad permanent damage if used without ear protection. .38 +P is bad enough but WAY better for YOU than .357.................................elsullo
I personally don't think one caliber will cause more damage than another unless you are talking a magnum really close to the ear. Hearing damage is one of two things, long term sounds that lessen your hearing, or a blown ear drum. It's unlikely that one of these will blow an ear drum more than the other one. My brother is the president of an audiologist company and I know a lot about this stuff. Now if you fired a high pressure round VS a low pressure round and you fired 100 rounds with no ear protection and you did this weekly for 13 years, yes, you might have more hearing damage with one VS the other, but worrying about this for one act of self defense is not something worth worrying about.
On my nightstand, besides my hardware, I keep and pair of electronic ear protection because I only use/carry either 357 Magnum and 357 Sig.
I'm a huge Federal HST fanboy. These Speer gold dots look amazing as well but I won't budge on my carry ammo. Federal HST 4Life!!! 😁
I like HST as well. To be fair I think there's a lot of designs that would probably work equally well most of the time, but the HST probably has a slight edge quite literally with it's tough jacket design. I carry HST in both my .327 Federal on body snub and off body carry 5" .40 S&W pistol (165 gr).
@GunSam i have 124gr. +P 9mm in my 3in. barrel hellcat osp, 230gr 45 a.c.p. in my 3.3in. barrel Shield45, and 165gr 40 S&W in my 4.2in. barrel Taurus 24/7 Pro, all Federal HST 😁
The 9 militards are furiously beating their keyboards to pieces right now.
If weight wasn't a thing, I'd be rocking that 45!
i like 45 acp on my opinion. I'm curious seeing how both ammo does😊. i miss the jug or not.
Be interesting to put a regular, (porcelain) house plate or piece of tile at an angle. Then see how the bullet performs after a somewhat hard, dense barrier into your testing process?
I understand the cost and time. Just curious how it would affect the different, most common carry bullets.
Need a 1911, sonny.🤣
LOL Even out of a 5 inch barrel the 9mm 147gr still only gets 1020 fps velocity. My 4 inch barrel G32 357 Sig with a Hornady 147gr round gets a 1225 fps velocity.
Well most 9mm 147 gr loads are meant to be slower velocity. When they are loaded right they can be nice, like Underwood's 9mm+P 147 gr Nosler JHP does 1,148 FPS from this pistol and Buffalo Bore's 9mm+P+ 147 gr XTP does 1,147 FPS.
@@GunSam OK and the Hornady 357 Sig 147gr round out of a 5 inch barrel is pushing 1300 fps.
Every time I see a video of yours with the 41 I want to get one. I have a 21 with a threaded barrel so I need help convincing myself they’re not the same. Can you offer some info to push me over the edge? 😁
I dont understand the false advertising with pressures and velocity. Does it really cost that much more to make a full power load in an expensive carry ammo?
@GunSam do you thing Speer G2 is better than the traditional Speer Good Dot 124g +P???
I would say better is a subjective term. From memory, I think the original Gold Dot from this 5" pistol is like 100 ft lbs more energy than this stuff, which could be "better", however bullet expansion with this is bigger and sharper which could be better. I think the original Gold Dot loading is better but the actual bullet design the G2 is better.
There seems to be a trend towards the advertised velocity of Speer Gold Dot ammo not being achievable in real world handguns. Maybe Speer has test barrels that produce exceptional velocity?
One thing is for certain, it's hard to go wrong with Federal HST or Speer Gold Dot 2 in 9mm, 40 S&W or 45 ACP.
I have tested plenty of Speer ammo that has gotten rated velocity, for some reason this one was lower than rated.
@@GunSam Seems to me that on some other channels, Speer GD ammo comes in a little on the low side velocity wise and in a fairly consistent manner.
I wish that 45 had a bit more heat to it but I'm actually surprised it explained
It told bad guy sit down, and he did. Sorry, making fun of your typo, no disrespect, it happens lol
9 mm takes 6-9 hits on average to stop a threat... Either 40 S&W and 45 ACP take 1-3... If you do the math that means you are better armed with 14 RDS of 40 than 17 rds of 9 in most encounters and pretty much equally armed with 8 rds of 45... In terms of real world "stopping power".
This was the most fudd thing I've ever heard!! 🤦♂️
@Tom-cp6yj except it is fact. Real world police depts that I deal with in my career as a law enforcement officer whose depts went back to 9 or switched from 40 to 9 regret it. At least at the street level. 9 mm is not a good LE caliber.
@@Tom-cp6yj It might be "Fudd" in terms of making it only a .45 ACP VS 9mm thing, but there's truth to it. I have done a lot of research and watched a lot of policeactivity videos, researched each particular department and the guns carried. There does seem to be a big disparity in how well .40 S&W works compared to how well 9mm works. At the end of the day, stopping the threat fast is at the top of the list of needs in a defensive handgun. Having to use half your rounds to stop a threat gives a lot of time to the bad guy to do bad things to you.
so the 9mm(.355) expanded more than the 45acp(.452)?
.712 vs .710
in ur real world sim
Ill keep my 115gr +p+ gold dot.
Did the .45 Jam on the first gel shot?
Try an HK45 or USP45. Those pistols really reduce the 45+p recoil.
As I said in my FBI Qual, I believe a hotter contract G2 is the FBIs current load. WINCHESTER 147 gr M1153 was Socom's load but w bad QC and poor expansion I wouldn't be surprised if they changed to this. These look like excellent loads for DEPTs that deal w Cars often. SAM for Duty loads like this you should always save a few and do a Duty Load vid w steel like you did before w Windshild. Also, Sam's talking about loads that expand faster HAVE a SHORTER NECK before expansion MAY do better. Most don't think so nowadays, but they used to measure EKE how much energy is dumped on E15 15 cm or 5.9". If you look at .357 mag Federal 125 gr 11.7" of Penetration (I recreate it in test vid soon to FBIs test), 9BPLE, and Secret Service did their own Secret Study no one has but they picked the even shallower Penetrator Winchest 115+p+ (I have Winchester's data on it) and then they went to 125 gr .357 Sig. Makes you wonder. They worked better than they should have on paper...I believe some bag guys sometimes realize they've been shot "FIBS Factor" nerve sensation once you get over appximately 350 eke (.357 sig hst it's way higher) but that is just theory. Getting bullet deep enough in all circumstances Trumps that 😊 Still nowadays you can get a Short Neck, Huge expansion and 13"+ Organic Gel Penetration like HST that does it all. HOWEVER, for vehicle work, delaying that neck like here in the G2 147 grbmay have been on purpose to get better vehicle penetration...skiv length, jacket thickness, lead antimony a whole lot goes into it. I don't usually like 147 and only if 4" or longer but if I had this, or better a Plus P version like FBI might have give that just 35fps more and it would be pretty damn good.
I thought the FBI was using the 135gr+p critical duty?
@DEAMcN-t1f do you always believe what you read 9 years ago?
@@DanTheWolfman I just wasn't sure and wanted to ask is all.

Wow. A minimal difference in performance. It's almost like the tradeoffs to accommodate employment of the larger cartridge aren't justifiable. HERESY! TWO WORLD WARS!😂 Nice video.
And there it is. The 9 militard cope.
