The .45, while would have liked better, No Overpenetration to be concerned with, and even Hollows that don't expand do something like 16% more damage than FMJ. Plus, it doesn't shrink! @@briangomoll5965 Can I ask why? They had random performance, you never could get a consistent penetration number. Also personally, slipping on the mud the water created in the summer and the ice it created in the winter was taking a toll on my hips.
@@GunSam First, I watch almost all of your stuff. I've watched it for a long time. I get it, It's much better for testing and much easier. Much more scientific. I just liked the DIY nature of the jug or not box and the novelty of it. Your testing and the channel Tools and Targets are always first rate! Extremely informative and honest. Plus no one was doing anything with revolvers before you did, except maybe Paul Harrell. Now they are cool again. Keep up the awesome! Your long distance shots are amazing!
@@GunSamthere’s no doubt that your comparison videos are so much better in the current format. But I have to say I really enjoyed the play on words with your name for the “Jug or Not” box. 😅
There are some goofy people to be hitting the Thumbs Down when ammo does poorly. It is best to hit the Thumbs Up to show appreciation for receiving the facts.

I LOVE PPU ammo. It's affordable, good quality, and available in a wide variety of cartridges (like 7x57 and .32 Long). That said, much as I like the Serbs and their ammunition manufacturers, I wouldn't rely on their JHP loads. Their rifle soft points though, yeah, I think those would be fine.

Yeah, probably 12" to 16" barrel, which is weird. Remington, Federal, Winchester all use 4" V barrels for their ratings, I know Underwood uses a 6". Seems odd to test a revolver round from a carbine to get it's rating. Be like if I told you this gas can full of gas I got right here, definitely gives you 60 mpg. My hybrid Camry gets that, so take this gas and put it in your 2500 truck....should do about as well....

I have a case of that .357 Mag - I actually bought it with my Rossi R92 lever gun in mind. I saw a review showing gel results at the higher carbine speeds and it actually did quite well. Thanks Sam! PPU is my fav SS109 5.56 round - that's the M855 Nato equivalent with soft steel core - it's been very accurate for me.

Great tests! A while back I tested the 357 in water jugs and had almost perfect penetration and expansion from 2.5 and 3" barrels. I honestly never tried longer than that. I still have a case or so left. Hit me up if you want to run a short barrel test with it, I'll donate a box.

Hi Sam, I understand that the .45 didn't expand but, on screen, the permanent cavity looks the widest of the lot, also, its temporary cavity is something you notice.
Yeah, .45 ACP is one of those rounds that consistently fail ballistic testing protocols, yet definitely do better in reality than other options like 9mm. Example would be, there would probably be people that would say a .32 ACP that penetrates to 12" and expands to .468" (1.5 times) is perfectly lining up with protocol, yet a .45 ACP that overpenetrates by 1" and doesn't expand more than .509" which is far less than 1.5 times expansion did "worse", when common sense says, it did a lot better.

Thumbs up is supposed to be about the video presentation, never click thumbs down based on a product but click thumbs up because he put the work into the video and has been consistent for years bringing content so never hit thumbs down or you stop google from allowing gun videos to go viral for once rather then comedy videos and such

Thanks for testing these rounds. Ive heard muxed reviews on pustol ammo. Rifle ammo is good and has consistently burning up the powder leaving very little residue on a cleaning. They go bang and make holes, but thats it.

I hear they load monarch ammo for academy. I've had decent luck with that.. had a hard primer here and there but no big deal. I appreciate that they load oddball calibers like 7.62 Tokarev and 8mm Mauser
8mm Mauser might be oddball in the US but it is very common all over Europe.. i would say there is no gun store here that does not have it available...

The internet hive mind told me that Fiocchi 73ge fmj was the move for my P32 for defensive use. However, my gun doesn’t like it. It jams pretty often, and hits very far from point of aim. Although the PPU .32 fmj isn’t as hot, it’s never jammed, and hits right on point of aim for me. I figure that’s more important for a defensive round anyway.

Nice vid. I enjoyed the video you did with the windshield and the 38 special. It made me rethink if I should be throwing my snub in my pocket when I go out. I do a lot of driving and the 38 did not do well through glass ig I ever had to shoot through my own windows. As you know first hand, there are crazy people on the road.
I have decided to do more barrier testing, but I am going to go into 18 ga steel if I can find it. Car door simulation. Seemed like no matter what I did with the windshields, a dozen people would complain I did it wrong somehow, wrong angle, already cracked etc.
I took a PPU fragment to the face at the range a dew weeks ago. I was trying out my brand new Diamondback SDR. Another fragment got stuck near the forcing cone and caused a lockup. I sent the SDR back, and Diamondback claimed to have fixed it. They included a note telling me to use better ammo. Then I tried some Federal, but have another lockup, with another fragment stuck near the forcong cone.

Yep. I've found both PPU and especially PMC seem to use very hard lead formulations for their bullet cores. They consistently perform just like an FMJ from what I've seen. The PMC .44 Mag is virtually a hard-cast lead, just happens to have a jacket.

I don't know the precise distinction between SAAMI and CIP. My understanding is that they measure chamber pressure differently. Pressure specifications are created accordingly.
I'd say when it comes to picking something for self-defense, spend the extra money and get something that's proven and reliable. It may be expensive but even if you cycle your defensive ammunition, you only have to buy it once every so often. Dont go cheap when it comes to getting the tools you need to keep yourself alive. I stick with Federal HST in all of my defensive calibers and I know I'm not going to go wrong with that.

Another notch in the "I knew it" board of knowledge. People were going on and on about European ammo being way hotter than American, I knew we would probably see what we saw here before testing it. This 9mm 124 gr JHP averages 1,117 FPS in a 5" barrel. I tested the standard pressure Federal Punch 124 gr JHP recently, averages 1,180 FPS.
When you first stated the velocities before testing, it caused a little ptsd. I am old and remember when you could buy euro ammo cheap at gun shows. Some of it was super hot sub gun only stuff that would destroy handguns. You had to be careful back then.

I have heard of some scary stories of folks from the southern states. Going to Alaska with 357 mags and not being able to stop a charging bear with it. Europeans tend to only face off with others. That ammo seems weak in certain areas.

I've shot a lot of rifle caliber ammo Privi stuff. It always seems ok and try to get 7.5 French anywhere else. I also had good luck with their "Defense Line" regarding target accuracy in .357.

I've always passed by PPU because I never see it tested or recommended. This sort of makes me think that was a good idea. The 9mm did ok but doesn't offer anything that everyone else doesn't already have. The .357 mag might be good out of a lever gun. Thanks for this video, I've always wondered about PPU but passed it by and now I know that was a good idea. I might consider it for range fun depending on pricing.
That is what I'm thinking as well. The PPU in .357 Mag might have interesting results if fired from a lever action carbine/rifle or through a long barrel(6"+) revolver.

Sam, I do want to add my data to yours. I have done a fair amount of velocity testing and in all of my testing the PPU 10 mm is the absolute lowest velocity factory ammo that I have tested. I have four different 10 mm handguns and none of them have I gotten over 950 ft./s on my testing so your testing with the revolver is very similar and correlates with my testing.

@rogerwood5228 good to know. Money has been tight so sadly I haven't gotten anything for awhile. I remember waiting on the line outside of Academy on delivery days during the hard times
As range ammo it would be okay for the price. Their rifle ammo that I have purchased has been okay, even took a deer with some. Folks should only give you a thumbs down if you are being unfair or snobby, of which I have seen neither on your account. What is really bad is that A LOT of folks leave no feedback at all. Thumbs up from me!👍
Because I'm a fan boy, I know you have an old one where you did the lightweights with Underwood and you had the 185 grain 45 ACP the 115 9 mm and I think the 155 40 or something. And that was a Dan the wolfman test also, where you did the heavies and the lights?
It won't let me reply to you down below but I'd like to see the middleweights like the 200 to 210 grain ones there's only a couple would be quick gold dot hydroshock deep maybe a couple others seem to work well at that weight.
PPU is absolutely fine and I wouldn't think twice about buying their target/range ammo. But when it comes to carry/defensive ammo. I'd rather go with other brands that are long proven and have a street record of getting the job done.
I’ve found that PPU have a less pronounced mouth ridge for my calibers that headspace on the mouth. I’ve had many mag feeding issues on multiple classic single stacks when using big name ammo that seemed to apply virtually no taper crimp, causing the case mouth ridge to bind up. It’s not really an issue with more firearms, but it’s definitely something we’ve seen at my family’s gun shop with old single stack classics.
In using their 380 & 45 Hollows, in guns that are known to have feed issues...I have not had a single issue so maybe this is why. Reliability is bigger deal then other stuff in that regard

I saw Many boxes of PPU in my Local Gun Shop, The only box i Considered picking up was the .357 magnum boxes, other than that I too would not recommend this ammo. I had some S and B 158 grain .357 magnum Soft Points, after using 12 of them my Cylinder locked up. The shells on the last 3 rounds were split down the middle. I now only buy American, thanks much.

I have tried a couple of ppu rifle rounds for two different calibers. It goes bang, and its cheap. Takes a bit more to clean after firing it but seems a bit weak for what I have tried it in. I use it as range/training ammo. I will guess that expensive european ammo is loaded hotter than american ammo. Like in everything else, you get what you pay for
I've used PPU brass for reloading, and it has been good quality. Good quality metal. I guess we need to see about their actual ammo manufacturing though?

This is my issue with Ero companies buying up U.S. ammo companies. Clearly the standards are not the same. The one thing that makes me mad is companies selling ammo listed as defensive. Marking up the price. You test them and they are duds. On the other foot the few that meet muster want 50.00 for a box of 20. Oh, got me a .327 because of your testing. I like wheelguns probably because they were my first exposer to firearms.

So I only order my ammo from lucky gunner and they had a deal a while ago on ppu 9mm 147 jhp now normally I only shoot winchester out of all my 🔫 but lucky said it's been tested by them so I said w.t.h. I bought 2 boxes and gotta say not 1 problem so yes I will be buying more.
I only buy that for ppu ammo for my tokarev. They were the only brand I could find that had jhp in that caliber. When they open up they perform very nice. I don't recommend them at least for jhp tokarev.
@@DanTheWolfman I only tested the 7.62x25 jhp ppu. I used 10% gel and I chrono graphed them. they were 300fps slow roughly and wouldn't expand unless I opened them up some. I agree with gun sam. good target stuff but that's all. with full expansion they either stopped at the 15" or went all the way. that's bare gel. what safety issues? technically my gun is an m57 version of tt33. half cock is the safety.
They make AK rounds primarily and for Serbian market primarily. I didn't know they eveb made 357 rounds. Its a new product for them as most people in Europe don't carry or own 357 revolvers. Mostly Serbian made pistols and some imports now...

@@DanTheWolfman My dear fellow, not only did I NOT see it, after Duck Ducking for it, came up with NOTHING! Further, you provided NO hyperlink, so again, NO, I didn't see any info on a .32 H&R revolver. Right now, it looks like it'll be between the Taurus 327 model and the Charter Arms Snubbie (sadly, the Charter Arms doesn't get as high reviews, and cost about $100 MORE than the T.). The Lipsey's (another stone cold IDIOT company as far as finding out specifics on what they make; they're all Fluff/Mirrors, and that's about it; WORTHLESS as far as delving into specifics) is another choice, in the S&W 432UC, but that sucker has reviews so bad that it makes the Taurus 327 look GOOD! Ruger is just outrageously priced and has CLUB of a Trigger Pull (Ruger simply does NOT listen to its customers) for either the LCR (which I do NOT like) or the SP101 (which I love, IF you can afford to get Trigger Work done on it; used to own an SP101 in .357 mag, and AFTER Trigger Work, it shot like a DREAM). Bottom line, I'm just pretty much pissed off because a lack of available info, companies that expect people to just fork over money for HALF DONE products, and Reviewers who don't bother providing Hyperlinks. I thought, 1600fps 158 gr 357mag 😮. my hodgdon reload data gives with stupid 10 in barrel, 16.7gr h 110 ,158gr xtp , 1591fps , 40,700 cup. I think more of my revolvers than to shoot a heavy diet of that. even the raging bull could only take a limited amount before ware and tare started creeping in. but buffalo bore has some beasty 357mag loads that would stress a revolver if not limiting usage. Papa 😊
Cheap? Not where I see it. Its one of the best ammo you can find. Serbia makes quality stuff that also is primed and lasts for decades. My AK Serbian as well. Zastava is quality.
Right now where I buy ammo, PPU 10mm is 43 cents a round for this JHP stuff. My favorite 10mm round, the Federal HST JHP is $2.43 a round....The other calibers are a similar discrepancy.
@GunSam wow. That's a good deal. Here, even PPU is marked up as close as all US made ammo. I am impressed with velocity on 45 and not even +p. I use PPU in AK and it's made for it runs flawless. Its war proven ammo during war in former Yugoslavia where I am from originally.
Hello Ppu ammunition you consider them as comparable qualities for example to Magtech or Fiocchi? I'm asking you because I've tried Magtech but I've noticed that they dirty a lot
One foreign ammo maker, the Czech Sellier & Bellot 150gr JSP .30-30 are smoking out of a 20 inch barrel, just over 2400 fps. 99% weight retention. Mushroomed very well in gel (impact at 100yd) and penetrated admirably at 19-20 inches. That's about all I can report that is actually impressive with foreign ammo. The PPU Prvi Partizan is not.
The ppu in .357 looks like that it might do better with a 6 inch barrell and certainly through a lever action carbine. The 9mm looks alright, but there are so many good 9mm rounds for decent prices why bother. The .45 is meh, it would certianly work. The last one shall remain nameless bc its not worthy of the caliber printed on the box.
Generally 185s in a 45 mushroom too much without enough of the stem of the mushroom so they don't go deep they open up like a parachute and go really shallow, in gel, The sectionual density ain't that great I don't think.
@DanTheWolfman yeah but I watched way more than this one video at 45 caliber at 185 weight, and generally it opens so big that it's like a parachute without the mushroom stem and it doesn't go deep.

Wow, that 10mm isn't even up to 40 s&w, is it? I believe 180gr should be 1000 fps in 40, correct? It is a shame that we are trending to an all 9mm society. My local big box outdoor store and I mean big name. They only had 2 choices in 40 s&w, that's a shame.
The only PPU I have right now is 7.62x38R for the 1895 Nagant revolver (and some 7.65x53 Argentine that I haven’t tried yet). It is noticeably milder than communist block surplus ammo. In my very limited experience PPU loads light, perhaps because they are nervous about the old obsolete guns using a lot of their ammo.

1640 fps with a 158 grain bullet sounds like what I'd expect from a lever action carbine

The .45, while would have liked better, No Overpenetration to be concerned with, and even Hollows that don't expand do something like 16% more damage than FMJ. Plus, it doesn't shrink!

It rings steel and plows up water jugs.

Bought some of this in .357 a few years ago, can't remember how it performed,
but the brass has been great for reloading.

I have an 8mm Mauser custom stock (m 98). It’s flat at 200 yards.

Hi Tim, Side window is way easier then windshield fyi.

Hi Fud...SAAMI is more accurate from technology
I'd say when it comes to picking something for self-defense, spend the extra money and get something that's proven and reliable. It may be expensive but even if you cycle your defensive ammunition, you only have to buy it once every so often. Dont go cheap when it comes to getting the tools you need to keep yourself alive. I stick with Federal HST in all of my defensive calibers and I know I'm not going to go wrong with that.
No doubt about it. I would not trust bargain basement ammo for use as an EDC round.

Not too surprised that these are sub-par.

@@DanTheWolfman I always like revolver aficionados videos!

Serbian quality is excellent.
Look at Jokic and Djokovic!!!!❤🎉

PPU did make the Monarch brand ammo for Academy Sports awhile back.
Still do
@rogerwood5228 good to know. Money has been tight so sadly I haven't gotten anything for awhile.
I remember waiting on the line outside of Academy on delivery days during the hard times
@christophernemeth421 just bought a case of monarch (ppu) 5.56 yesterday at academy on sale for 40cpr. Decent price for plinking ammo.

As range ammo it would be okay for the price.
Their rifle ammo that I have purchased has been okay, even took a deer with some.

What is really bad is that A LOT of folks leave no feedback at all.

This is when i miss the water jugs
I've done OG Sam tests, and have 4 layer light clothing water jugs testing this year
Because I'm a fan boy, I know you have an old one where you did the lightweights with Underwood and you had the 185 grain 45 ACP the 115 9 mm and I think the 155 40 or something.
I'll stick with Underwood and Buffalo Bore for self-defense pistol ammo.
Do you have barter hollows though....
@@DanTheWolfman barter hollows?
PPU is absolutely fine and I wouldn't think twice about buying their target/range ammo. But when it comes to carry/defensive ammo. I'd rather go with other brands that are long proven and have a street record of getting the job done.
Thumbs up 👍 for the testing. Thumbs down 👎 on the quality and utility of the ammo. (Thanks, Dan!)
9 & .357 are good for 50 rd box stuff. Welcome
I know this is rifle stuff, but I’ve had good luck with the PPU in 375 H&H , shoots same hole at 50yds out of a CZ 550.
Awhile back, it was about 1.35 a round. I was rather surprised.

Sam, you Sir, are more reliable than the postal service. Michigan? Anyway, thanks for saving us from PPU 10mm! Sheesh it’s weak for .40 S&W.
Better than sloppy thin Remington brass lol

This is my issue with Ero companies buying up U.S. ammo companies. Clearly the standards are not the same. The one thing that makes me mad is companies selling ammo listed as defensive. Marking up the price. You test them and they are duds. On the other foot the few that meet muster want 50.00 for a box of 20. Oh, got me a .327 because of your testing. I like wheelguns probably because they were my first exposer to firearms.
Good quality, but like some other mfg., I only buy ball.
Good tests. Since I mainly shoot 9mm i guess i wouldn't be afraid to use this PPU ammo.

Past experience, PPU ammo seems weak in 1 cm and 44 mag, good range ammo, police the brass and load to full power for woods carry.
So I only order my ammo from lucky gunner and they had a deal a while ago on ppu 9mm 147 jhp now normally I only shoot winchester out of all my 🔫 but lucky said it's been tested by them so I said w.t.h. I bought 2 boxes and gotta say not 1 problem so yes I will be buying more.
the rounds seemed mild. I've had ppu 44 magnum 300 grain jhp seemed hot.
I don't think anyone told PPU that 10mm is rated for 40k psi?
translations go bad sometimes...
I only buy that for ppu ammo for my tokarev. They were the only brand I could find that had jhp in that caliber. When they open up they perform very nice. I don't recommend them at least for jhp tokarev.
Did you test....I've seen 16" and ex from vids so that's good...dro safe and other safety is the issue with t33s though. Just joined Mak world!
Would the 10 mm pick up some speed with a semi automatic?
i'm switchin' from pmc to ppu in my taurus 856. it seems to be more accurate for me.
The 357 flat nose fmj I tried was garbage. Jackets separate. Made crazy holes in paper
They make AK rounds primarily and for Serbian market primarily.
I didn't know they eveb made 357 rounds.
Its a new product for them as most people in Europe don't carry or own 357 revolvers.
Mostly Serbian made pistols and some imports now...
strange, u sure not timing issue...or is yours orted Hope everyone LIKED this vid, thanks for supporting Sam & if you would support my Channel too that would be really appreciated! Check out my "Paul Harrell Tribute Playlist" which has my Ballistics Tests, Revolver Range Vids, DA/SA Autos etc. 50 rd Budget JHPs are great for Function Testing, I use 3-4 different Hollows to test every new Pistol & None have had any Malfs with PPU. The 9mm did well, & in Ammogeddon times ala 2020 they are great for Barter or for SHTF. 9mm 124 gr FMJ did great in my video Paul liked called "Which COUNTRY BEST 9mm Ammo Most ACCURATE? Paul Harrell TRIBUTE 124gr FMJ Is All Ammo Created Equal?". The .357 would be good in the NW if you had to worry about BOTH 2 Legged & 4 legged threats, +likely good in a Levergun or Hunting too. The .45, while would have liked better, No Overpenetration to be concerned with, and even Hollows that don't expand do something like 16% more damage than FMJ. Plus, it doesn't shrink! Functioned fine in my upcoming Tisas 1911 reviews. I will not comment on the 10mm. Everyone, please consider getting CustomWolfGrips for your Snubs, & getting my Combatives & Street Jiujitsu Instructional on BJJFanatics! Cheers!
@@DanTheWolfman Three different guns. Same thing. None are ported
That 10mm was pathetic and the 357 velocity must have been from a lever gun.
Any chance of you doing a Beretta 30X Review using the Undwerwood rounds? I'd also like to see a Taurus 327 review using the same rounds in Ballistic Gel and of course, the Water Jug Test. Thank you.

My dear fellow, not only did I NOT see it, after Duck Ducking for it, came up with NOTHING!
H&R site goes to the mindless twits at Interarms, who are pretty much worthless as teats as a boar hog; their site SUCKS, is about as navigable as a Black Hole, and unless you're interested in spending $1350 and change on a Luger wannabe, or PARTS for .22 models, you'll come up EMPTY!
Gather my drift?

Wow did that 10mm have the lowest energy of the 4? Absolutely pitiful. I like they're rifle ammo especially there 100 grain 243. It's great for whitetail and pretty consistent

Wow. That 10mm was BAD. Not eclipsing 1000 fps is bad, never mind barely getting above 900 fps. Pointless 10mm ammo right there.
@GunSam wow.
The 10mm was disappointing
I would rather pay the extra $$ for good ammo.
Generally 185s in a 45 mushroom too much without enough of the stem of the mushroom so they don't go deep they open up like a parachute and go really shallow, in gel, The sectionual density ain't that great I don't think.
some...2 of 3 I tested went far enough, 1 didn't...

From what I've seen European ammo is just like American ammo, some of it's good and some of it's not so hot
Bump
Ppu 10 mm junk ..bet you can find hotter 380
Ahhh yes... the ever disappearing comment. Of course the trolls and bots have no such issues, ever. Gotta wonder what payroll they are all on.
I think I will three or four more comments just to bump the algorithm.
I haven't been in comments for a couple hours. I guess I got something to 'look forward to' reading now lol

Cheap com block ammunition is never a good idea it is not made to American standards. Most folks are cheapskates by nature and will buy the shit out of it instead of high quality American ammunition.
Is American ammo ever made to European standards? Weren't one or more US companies putting underbore bullets in 7.62x39 cartridges?
Wow, that 10mm was pathetic, thanks for the testing.🫡
