Testing some .38 Special PPU 158 gr LSWCHP VS .38 Special+P Federal 158 gr LSWCHP VS Speer Gold Dot. I do a 10% Clear Ballistic test with a car door simulation.
Sam, YT did YT things Glad you had fun & Like the Grip! Hope others do too from premiumgrips. Everyone Check out Top 5 Budget Guns I did today! You can see other pics, my Ballistics & poi vids at CustomWolfGrips. The St. Louis/FBI 158+ was known to do really good from 4", pretty good from 3", & I wouldn't use in 2". Your 3" testing of the Federal actually shows same expansion as 3" did through 4 layer "Light Clothing" into water jugs I have coming up vs the old Red lipstick UW load you sent me long ago. I'll have to check later how it compares to penetration as I use a Scientifically Validated formula -there are a few that all get in similar range- to convert it to Organic Gel penetration. I'm alternating Top 5 tabletop or Vs "Talkie" vids with Range or Ballistics testing I hope everyone will show me some support too. The Paul Harrell Tribute playlist is where I have put Modern Meat Target, poi, Revolver, DA/SA, & Shotgun vids so check that out. Cheers everyone, all comments/Likes/Sub to Sam and I are appreciated it really makes a difference making vids is not easy. For the record, my choice for .38 based on my testing In different protocols and Federal Data is #1 Hydrashok Deep #2 punch thx
That grip is beautiful!
Dan the wolf man is the man, appreciate you buddy❤️👍
@@IveGotonethatCanSee thank you!
for C&C I like the 2" barrels. The only ammo I feel confident in for my 2" Taurus 856 is with Buffalo Bore or Underwood. However, There may be a few different brands but those are my choice. As far as the wood grip goes, I prefer Pachmayr smooth rosewood. The grip on mine fits without a single gap. Unlike the grip you sent Sam. There's a pretty good gap on the top of back strap. But it is a cool looking grip. Thank you for the ammo test. Peace..
70 years old. 30 years active law enforcement.
Great video. Regarding bullet performance: I'll bet the bad guys can't tell a difference!!
A shooter will encounter too many variables in a gunfight. And you can't have the "magic bullet" that performs perfectly in every situation.
Consider this: The manufacturers use fear & peer pressure to keep customers continually seeking the latest and greatest ammunition, and they profit handsomely from it.
Very interesting. After 50 years of development, the Gold Dot is only marginally better than the old FBI loads.
Terminal ballistics wise, yes. However, if the Gold Dot is marginally better than the FBI load with less bullet weight, which means less muzzle flip, and less smoke which means better follow up shots, I think overall, the Gold Dot is a tad more better than marginally.
I saw this vid differently: The Gold Dots expanded ALMOST PERFECTLY even after going through the steel sheet! And the velocity was MUCH better. "Marginally better?"..............................elsullo

@@GunSam yeah, my revolver is a 4.25 inch so I’m not really worried about a tiny bit more muzzle flip personally I don’t really notice any difference for the most part between different bullet weights of the same caliber.
See I prioritize penetration over expansion so in my opinion the Gold Dot performed a little bit worse than the FBI load. Recoil doesn't bother me with 38 or even 38+p my carry revolver is a 32oz Ruger Speed Six so compared to 357 mag the FBI load isn't all that bad in the recoil department. I have the Federal FBI load in my SHTF stash and I'm thinking about switching to it for my carry load. I got into a car accident recently and it's been causing pain in my arm. Normally I carry a full power 357 load but with the pain I'm in the FBI load might be a better choice
Those wood grips look great! As for the ammo, I wouldn't want any of it pulled out of me. But those Gold Dots did well.

I know what it looks like as a viewer as I have to view the video when I edit it, but when you only got a certain number of rounds, and you aim 3" to 4" away from the first bullet hole, and it hits in a similar spot, then you do it again, aim way the heck away from the previous hole, and it hits in a similar spot, and now you are out of ammo and have to then wait a week and spend money to order more ammo and then reshoot this in 20 degree air, all to maybe get slightly different results, it's not worth it to me.
Also trying to move the taped on steel wasn't a consideration because from my front view it appeared my shot was going to be 3" away from the other steel hole, but these issues are things only noticed after the fact while in editing. Because of my experience with comments, and knowing these are all going to be trolled to death, all I have to say is:
To the "not valid same hole, redo test" brigade, it's not as simple as that. This is a video for entertainment, the government isn't paying me to do this as an official study and neither are you, nor am I trying to sell you a product. Remember that.
Thanks for going to the trouble for the viewers, Sam. And there should be a prison for trolls because they make life miserable, drag everyone down, and accomplish nothing of value.
@@exothermal.sprocket Amen to that.

Thank you for NOT being a paid shill for Taurus! (or anything else!) The new world of Taurus semi-autos borders upon genius, but I rarely read of happiness with their revolvers or with their customer repair services. They obviously COULD shoot the repaired gun and make sure that it were fixed, but it seems that they rarely even do that. I often read that guns sent in for repair are simply turned around with "no problems found" receipts...........................elsullo
Taurus has the WORST customer service of all the gun companies. I've had multiple encounters with their service people. Everytime, they bent over backwards to not honor their lifetime warranty and were rude. And that is even if they bother to answer their phone. Just pitiful !
Makes a person wonder how those shmucks remain employed in the "service" department. DEI?
Customers should NOT be a company's R&D department, or final stage of "manufacturing" to get a product functioning correctly.
Thanks. I still carry a 3" .38/.357Magnum revolver, so this is a test I really appreciate. Thanks to you and Dan. BTW, those are striking looking grips that he sent to you! Nicely done.
Thanks Frank

127 years and the .38 spl just keeps winning!! Cool of Dan to send the ammo and grips - I enjoy learning from you guys. Cheers!
Thanks Matt
Both the Federal and Speer loads performed very well so it boils down to personal preference and availability. As for the PPU load, it's weak sauce but would work in 2" snubbies for people who want less recoil. On the other hand, there are several 110 grain standard velocity options which would expand and generally be a lot better. Thanks for another excellent test.

I thought they were pretty damn awesome myself. Great work indeed!!
This was another great test and clear explanations.
Great test of popular 38 Special ammo. Plenty of people swear by the FBI 38 Special +P 158 grain LSWC-HP, but I'm a bigger fan of the Speer 38 Special +P Short Barrel 135 grain Gold Dot. I feel the higher velocity of the Speer load is more likely to result in more consistent terminal performance. Of course, I'm not shooting through car doors or windshields, so my opinion may be biased.
Cheers

Write down the Box information that you find when you search .38 FBI load. Federal 158gr LSWCHP .38 Special +P. Should come up on a search engine and have the info to find out something that you can work with.
I miss the old Federal 125 gr Nyclad Hollow points. It’s what I carried in my S&W mdl 15 when I first started in law enforcement back in ‘91.

What was so special about the nyclad? What did it do that was so good, haven't heard of any actual street performance about it and it was discontinued.
From a personal stand point ,my triplet sister was taken by a F.BI. load sorry to be gruesome the bullet fragments upon impact of bone ,it went 5 different direction across the top of her heart hit both kidneys, and the uterus not to mention the liver so your ballistic gel just gives a general idea of what a hollow point can do .
Would really like to see this in a shorter barrel! Excellent video as always

The 'old school' load to use is the Buffalo Bore 158 gr. +P L-SWC HP. I get a chronographed 963 fps from my 1-7/8" barrel S&W Model 642. Excellent performance in gel. I believe you did a video on that ammo already.
That load is what I carry in my .38 Special and .357 Magnum revolvers.

@@DanTheWolfman What kind of accuracy are you seeking at personal self defense ranges? Can you hit a man sized target at 3 feet? At 5 feet? What distance do you think personal self defense shootings will take place at?
Too many people create nonsensical scenarios and demand a handgun to meet them.
I've been carrying that ammo in a J Frame (not Buffalo Bore but the former Federal WW and RP loads) since 1973 as my off duty/backup handgun and now as a retired police officer.
Man sized target 3 shots, 3 seconds, 3 feet. THAT is the parameter to meet.
@garyK.45ACP that 3 thing was completely made up and no you won't know what situation you find yourself in. Just saying 27 oz sound great 15 oz jframe that's a but much for quick Accurate hits. While 3-5 yards is most likely you don't know if a 12 yards is where your last two take place or first 2 in defense of others. I want to hit grapefruit at 15 yards Rapidly if needed as there are only 2 grapefruit sized targets on a biped that work effectively. Anything causing slower splits than .34 to maybe .50 even in a jframe is too long if it makes shots not go A zone the terminal advantage is moot
Little historical factoid: Gold Dot came to be in 1992 after extensive testing and development of standard FBI protocol as response of multiple failures to stop (remington silver tip) in bad guys at 1986 Miami - where light for caliber fast bullets shoved premature expansion and failures to reach an anatomicaly important places in resisting bad guys.
You can rob a bullet of its speed pretty easy, not of its momentum (given bullet stays together) that is why Miami was ended by 158gr old FBI load ...

The 'FBI Load' has stopped more gunfights over the years than any other 38 Special loading so it's proven to be enough to work just fine. Regardless of expansion or performance in gel...it works! You are well armed with it even in a 2" snubbie and any load that offers better results in gel isn't likely to do much better in the Real World especially if your marksmanship is good.
The load I carried in the late 80s working security. My self I used the nyclad versions by Federal and Winchester. It helped with bullet deformity when loading and in the speed loaders because of the soft lead.
@@mikeellis4158 I miss the S&W Nyclad offering, it was excellent in every way.
I prefer something I know expands from 2". Lighter rounds more likely have better placement in shots #2-6 too

Curious how the 110gr +p Critical Defense would have fared in this test with the other options.

Thanks for deigning to bless us with your presence. A 4” bbl is a 4” bbl regardless of manufacturer. Perhaps you should take your snobbery elsewhere if you can’t appreciate the great content GS offers us for what it is. Just my opinion.
I use both of these very loads in almost all of my .38 Special snubs, which is over half a dozen. Mostly based on where they hit in relation to the sights. Some guns don't like the +P 158 grain LHP though and there's some deterioration of accuracy. They do have rather substantial muzzle flash in 2" barrels too. But I feel perfectly fine with either one. Only my Colt Agent gets anything different, which is 50 grain Liberty Civil Defense or Federal 110 grain Hydroshock standard pressure.

The Speer Gold Dot 135 grain +P when used by the NYPD officers with Snubnose revolvers proved effective.
The 125 grain +P Golden Saber is another load that has a proven record in self defense shootings.
The Winchester 158 grain +P SWCHP worked well from the 4” service revolvers we had. The department issued the Remington load for Snubnose revolvers because they performed better.

I loaded up a bunch of .38 FBI rounds using 158 grain SOFT lead SWC hollow points with a gas check. Chronographed at 1000 FPS out of a 4" S&W Model 15 and 1040 FPS through a 5" Model 27 Smith (both early '70s production). Above average recoil for a .38 but pressures appeared safe. I would feel very confident with these rounds for personal defense. Definitely a preferred alternative to full house.357 loads inside the house if it came down to that.
Something like that in a M10 or M15 4" likely highly effective! Hope you guys Liked all these Extra Vids Sam has been able to bring to us all from my yearly Xmas. I like speer stuff, just not a huge fan of gold dot in 38 special. Ive seen it do great in 357 and 9mm.
I wonder if the one that penetrative like it did cause it had more powder charge or harder lead or what??🤔🤔 strange...ammo and one offs😂 like when you shoot tracers! They do stuff you wouldn't think they would!😅
Great test😊
I bought the Heritage Roscoe 38spl. It is an old school snubnose. I'll carry old school wadcutters and semiwadcutters in it. They worked reliably for police in the past. They'll still do the job today.
In a 2" barrel, I'm thinking wadcutters will do more damage than a hollowpoint.
There are jhps that will expand...but full wadcutter over semi over cheap none expanding jhp. He did a full wadcutters vid few weeks ago
I've been considering one of these. Does it hit to point of aim at 7 yards?
Would like to see the same test with the extreme defenders/extreme penetraters.

As far as speedloaders go, you might consider getting the speedloaders intended for the Colt D-frame (Detective Special, Cobra, Diamondback, etc) revolvers. They are just a bit smaller than for the S&W K-frames, and they might be a better fit for the Taurus M-856.

Great video, Sam. I think ever since I have a snub nose .38 special revolver your channel became my #1 go-to, I probably have watched all your videos. But I don't recall watching one about 158gr SWC, not hollow point. Do you have one? That's the round I'm using this winter, and I was curious about its performance. Once again, thank you for offering this channel. It has been very entertaining.
I use the Remington HTP 158 LSWCHP. I've heard their lead is softer than the Federal rendition.
I also have Buffalo Bore 110 TAC XP copper Hollow points but I'm hesitant to carry them
They seem too light to have decent penetration. Especially if they had to pass through a barrier first.

I got some boxes of those Fed type loads but they are 158 plus P and blue nyclad version. They were 18$ for 50 when I got these boxes. I thought they made them nyclad to reduce lead exposure? But the nylon has to be slicker than lead and maybe would go faster, I hope.

The first round into the steel possibly capped over the hp and made it into partial FMJ... maybe. Penetration was the name of the game back in the day and still is. Hollow points may not be as 'better' or safer as people think they are. Heavy lead soft or hard going slow is reliable over hyper fast bullets that can riccochet or miss same as anything only more so.
Might be right about the capping

On the off chance I do carry a 38 it’s usually a standard pressure 148 wadcutter or a 158 semi wadcutter hollow point. Nice to know how both work

I think the Remington HTP version has softer lead. Maybe the softest. In my tests they expanded really well. Have not tried the Federal or Winchester version. Also Buffalo Bore standard pressure uses a really soft lead and they do well out of a 3 or four inch barrel. I do love those 135 grain short barrel Gold Dot as well.

@GunSam Two questions. If you had to defend yourself, would it make a difference to the target? If you were going to get accidentally shot, is one going to be safer than the other (survivability?, Lose a leg vs flesh wound)?

Good test I enjoy watching the very much especially the 38 special stuff. There is something though that I do not think matched up with bullets from the past. The old school 158 lswchp were best if cold swaged and many were. Reloads etc are not. Those boxes are not made with soft lead from cold swaging. There is a big performance difference as I understand. I bought Hornady 158 gr cold swaged lswchp to reload specifically because of that. The closest I've seen come in testing was watching Paul Harrell shoot Buffalo Bore version of those cold swaged 158 gr lswchp into his meat target. They did fantastic and better than other modern rounds. Lots of expansion too. He did it with snub nosed pistols too. In essence I think because of the variation with the new manufacturing of an old load those fall short in testing. Would you be willing to test some reloads that I make with the Cold Swaged Hornady 158 gr Lead Semi Wad Cutters Hollow Points? I make mine on the hotter end with HS6 and use my SW 642 to shoot them. I just upgraded my pistol with the bigger Hogue grips for my big hands and swapped out the trigger spring for a better performance especially if my hands aren't working well like normal. If you want to reload them I'll be happy to send you some bullets so you can reload them yourself to avoid ammo shipping issues. I really like those Hornady reload bullets. I stick to those and the 100 gr Lehigh Extreme Defense for self defense at home. But I also use a hot Hornady 110 gr XTP for target shooting training etc. 158 gr xtp and 125 gr xtp I save to reload the hotter brother to the 38.
Let me know what you think. Hopefully you can do the test with the real cold swaged bullet. I'd love to see if performance in Gel. I know it worked well for Paul Harrell in his meat target and better than many new bullets.

I haven't done any gel tests but I do have a chronograph. Gold dot 9mm speeds are what they should be and very consistent. 38 and 357 are way below rated velocity and inconsistent

Sam, I’m curious how does the cold versus warm ballistics gel affect testing?
Man, looking at this with the car door, it seems to me that you would be better off with an old fashioned solid LSWC or maybe the new copper solid Lehigh defender.
So, you think it's better to go for least likely instead of most common for a Civilian DGU.....think
@@DanTheWolfman I was referring to that scenario Dan. I won't say think but... remember that short comments don't convey exact meaning right?
I use the 357 magnum 135gr gold dot in my Rossi with 4in barrel.

@DanTheWolfman Rossi 971 4in barrel
The gold Dot ammo is 135gr it's new
Never heard of the Gold Dot load. Anybody remember the Federal 158 gr +P SWC HP Nyclad ?
I’ll stick with my Golden Sabres or Critical Defense out of my old 4” Model 10.

Personally i consider the POI, to the sights.
That's good too, fortunately my 856 is all close with 120s-158 but all are different
I actually do not own a 38 spl revolver lol... lots of .357 I handload and 99% of my loads are cast and coated either full wad cutters (even have a 44 wadcutter in 185 grain mold) or SWC or wide flat nose. some carry loads... cause well... better to use factory ammo for legal reasons..... 230 grain 45 acp hydra shok and 240 44 mag hydra shok and 125 grain federal HP .357 Pretty sure tho that none of those calibers would be much less effective in cast and coated SWC
If you are good and focused send some 44 full wadcutters to sam sounds good. Hope you guys Liked all these Extra Vids Sam has been able to bring to us all from my yearly Xmas. @@DanTheWolfman How would I send em? Think I have two different weights Not sure what 'good' means? Focused? sheesh... I have like 20 projects started Sometimes they will set for a year!
I was satisfied with the results from both Federal and Speer. I would use either, depending on which shot closest to the point of aim if using fixed sights. The grips were quite nice, I like that they enclosed the frame for those of us with a big paw.🥶👍🙏❤💯

The gun & bullets Jodie Foster killed Buffalo Bill with.
I liked that scene because of the smooth realistic revolver reload. I also like some of the revolver reloads in the 48 Hour movie series. Very rare is a realistic revolver reload shown in a movie.
@@GunSamRoger that ! I watched 48 Hours when it first came out. I was at Ft Campbell, Kentucky doing some training. A friend and I went to an on post theater during our weekend pass. I loved the gunfight scenes. Showing them doing reloads was icing on the cake !
I’m still new to this stuff but I’m always intrigued. So many rounds of different calibers and loads do well or fail. The thing I don’t understand is how important (if at all) is the kinetic energy? I’m always of a rather limited point of view that more is always better. Obviously not necessarily true but not really sure how much to concern myself with it.
Little it's what is done w that energy ie expansion. Though 350 ft lbs for a pistol or 250 ft lbs for a snub tends to be the loads that are effective as a general jhp/sjhp rule
@ ah. I’ve been fairly foolish chasing somewhat meaningless numbers. Thanks.
@@bsam0923 most do that, Momentum is more realistic difference than ME anyways . Handguns are not Rifles.
Have you ever tested frangible ammunition with this revolver?
does speer still make the 135 grain load?? I cannot find it.
Yes

I Still Prefer Older Ammo for Most Calibers , Unless I can Afford Buffalo Bore, Double Tap Etr. And I am Looking For Better Grips for 2 Items i may or may not have. (Aledgelly ), Own, This is the Internet, and Commie Tube Too.
Commenting at 1:04min mark... The Semi wadcutters HP+P will over penetrate and have little or no expansion. The same prediction for the standard pressure, however it may not dramatically over penetrate, but again I'm saying virtually no expansion. Basing my prediction on 2+ Years of search for a functional "FBI"loads.... All manufacturers except Buffalo Bore us an alkoy that is way too hard... Okay, now we'll see how it turns out.

But a 357 . It's the same money and can shoot 357 and 38
Or don't and do what you want to get 6th shot...hmmm
Those are likely the best looking wooden grips ive seen i can't remember when. Awesome work. I might have to invest in them one day if they come in larger grip size like the Hogue larger grip. Normal grip size is just too small for my hands.
From my experience and other videos the Federal has much harder lead than the old Remington. Of course, I hear the new Remington also has harder lead than the old stuff! No idea on the PPU. {!-{>

shooting through metal is antimateriel test versus antipersonnel.
Can you do a video on how a good hand load comparison to a hot store bought load
Like to make the video in a way to help people make the decision to buy a loader or buy store ammo without looking at cost just on effectiveness
I would like to send you a couple of boxes of PMC 132gr FMJ .38spl for ballistic testing if you could. how do I do that?

Wait... didn't you do a test with Federal HP LSWC vs Remington HP LSWC and showed that the Remington actually expanded better? Yes - found it: th-cam.com/video/pJb6vHKwOUY/w-d-xo.html So... why would you use the Federal load here? Or was that specifically requested?
That was with a 2" barrel, this test is 3"

all of mine since 2020 have been fine
I EDC a G2C. I’ve had it for 7 years and haven’t had one problem out of it; not even a FTF. It’s been a great gun and I trust it completely.
Never realized.38 is a mini .45
'Gold Dots' are made by SPEER....NOT by 'Gold Dot'.
Everyone knows Speer Gold Dots are made by Speer. That's why there's no need to mention it. Be like if I didn't say "Federal Hydrashok" and said Hydrashok, literally everyone knows this. Only a person new to this stuff and who lacks knowledge, then looks it up would write a comment like yours.
