The white in the trailer harness is the ground wire. The ball is never to be used as a ground. I worked as a tech at a RV dealer for 17yrs, and as a master certified tech the ground is a direct wire connection from the truck wiring to the trailer wiring harness. Check the plugs on the truck and trailer for a bad rotted wire at the connection inside the plugs.
That's what I came to say. You have a painted receiver, painted hitch and you're trying to achieve a ground through a sliding painted connection? It will somewhat work. But it's not reliable and a very weak connection. I just dealt with this on a friends travel trailer.
Two things Nathan. 1) The white wire is your ground for the trailer. Chase that down and find out why it's not connected. 2) Put a little 'dielectric grease' on that ball. It allows electrical ground and won't let the ball rust. But seriously the ball should NOT be the ground link between the truck and the trailer.
Nathan, that seven wire trailer plug has a ground wire position on both ends. If connected, wire grounds trailer to tow vehicle independent of your rusty balls!!😂
I’m retired and on fixed income. And I can’t hardly get by with inflation. I’m sorry I can’t be Patreon , Election year maybe economy will get better. Thanks for sharing. Craig. Pa.
Electric should feed through the cable not on a rusty ball that will constantly do that. Might check if you have a spare hole not used. Or a ground on one side and not the other. Good luck -
Your trailer lights should have a ground wire in the plugin. That way, when you plug things in, they are grounded to your truck through the plugin. This will fix your rusty ball problem.
Was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it. There is something wrong in the harness. The ball has nothing to do with the grounding of the trailer.
It could if it were intentionally wired up to be. But that would be a very bad thing to do. Most balls, hitches, linkages, etc. will be connected directly to the frame, so it should be grounded. But you definitely shouldn't depend on that to complete your electrical circuit.
The contact area required to complete a 12vdc circuit is minimal. Even with the (minor to minimal) surface rust present, there is something else wrong in the wiring harness. Granted we have 60% of the needed info.
Ground wire is in the connector. Looking at the truck female, it is the wire bottom left [7 o'clock] . White wire. Most likely there is dirt on the male side [trailer plug] . Clean up with light sandpaper and a dab of dielectric grease.
I see you already have some help with your wiring so the lights are all grounded properly . Stay safe and glad you got some of the walnut logs home maybe it will dry up so you can go back and get them pretty soon. Fred.
I have some english walnut logs I would love to have cut down. Too bad I am in Utah and the tree service my sister used cut the logs to three foot lengths.
Having been in and around heavy trailers pretty much all my life I strongly suggest that you grease your hitch ball. I've worn out a few tongues running them dry. Plus it just makes them turn easier.
I don’t like to trust the ground through the ball. On the trailer plug your trailer uses there is a blade for a ground wire. Put a ground wire on the truck side and the trailer side and the lights will always work.
keep that rain,,we had rain for 3 weeks strait..and never rely on a ball ground....theres a Ground that runs in the harness and make dam sure its grounded to the trailer good,,not over paint..you no your brakes work with that ground,,,for that size trailer its a must..nice size logs there,,,Gold id say..dont stand in the rain,,,,its fun right..haaa be careful man..

After reading the comment below about the chicken house I have one. Chickens need a place in their coop consisting of dirt so they can take dirt baths, not just wood flakes covering all of the dirt. It keeps them free of mites.
don't keep your balls exposed to the weather put them away in your tool box and ground your trailer though the plug not the ball sham on you letting your balls get rusty lol
I lost count of all the camera angles from which you shot this video. I gotta wonder how many TH-camrs would have gone to that much trouble while working in the rain? You're so much better than the average TH-camr it's not even funny.
The new trailers with the 7 wire connector have a ground wire as part of the harness. If your trailer is depending on the ball for a ground there is another ground problem . Either the ground wire to the body of the truck or the trailer is compromised. Look further, do not ever depend on the ground through the ball.
Many years ago my Dad added a ground strap to our travel trailer to ensure there wasn't an intermittent ground and it ensured the lights and brakes always worked, it was a simple thing, braided wire to a spring clamp.
I enjoy ur channel very much, keep up the great job! I do have a suggestion though, should've used mr. Looks like your friend Butch has a system of keeping track of his logs (some kind of numbering system). You might want to adopt that kind of idea, as you'd be able to utilize your inventory wiser.
A good way to avoid the “Rusty Ball” problem is to have a plug ground going to the trailer from the truck. This avoids the problem. I did a lot of boat trailer towing in my day. FYI
Nathan, I enjoy your videos and had to comment on your trailer light issue. You should be able to plug into your truck and the trailer lights should work without connecting the hitch. Check for a proper ground in your trailer wiring harness.
I lived in Illinois for ten years, down state. We had black walnut everywhere. I am crazy about the nuts too, but they are dern hard to crack! A friend twelve miles south of me had an old barn that he sold to a woodworker, the whole barn was made from walnut!! He sold it for $25k and that was fifty years ago!!
40+ years ago, I set out to establish an inheritance fund for my grandchildren when I planted around 3 dozen black walnut trees on my property. Unfortunately, I had to sell the property a few years back, as the property taxes became outrageous. Sone of those trees had 20+ feet of clear lumber to the first branches. I sure hope the new owners appreciate the effort I put into those trees. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the local village decided that they wanted to establish itself as a tree friendly village and passed an ordinance that residents could not cut down or remove trees from their property without a permit and forestry inspection. Local government overreach!
you need to ground your plug to your frame of the truck before it goes thru your plug. if you only use the ground on the ball, driving down the road as the trailer bounces, your lights will flicker as it come in contact with the ball. honestly grounding every light to the frame of the trailer is the best option.
The power for the lights comes from the truck which means the ground for the lights also has to come from the truck. Grounding the trailer lights to the trailer frame does nothing if there is no ground from the lights to the truck. Wire the lights into the ground in the wire harness so there’s not an issue getting a good ground between the truck and trailer.
You should not rely on the tow ball connection for the earth. Where I am, the standard for all the trailers have a good earth through the trailer connector.
May want to check the 7 way trailer junction box, check the white wire grounding lug it can get corroded to not provide good grounding it may be grounding at the moment thru the trailer but it isn't the proper ground. White wire is part of the 7 way trailer plug that gets ground from the toeing vehicle. The walnut is great can't wait to see it saw into beautiful lumber. Have a great weekend! John Toccoa
Great video. Love walnut. Funny thing about walnut for me is that on my father's farm of almost 500 acres, not one tree was walnut. Even the neighboring farms had very few walnut. Just a odd quirk of the valley we lived in best I can guess.
We have something similar here. I have been cutting timber in a number of woodlots in Greene County Ohio for years. Walnut, oaks, hickory, you name it, but not a single poplar. Not one to be found. And yet if you plant one it will flourish. Go figure. Can't understand why they are not established in the local woods.
I'm almost finished with the kitchen table I made from a black walnut log. Just need to put the epoxy on the table top to be done but it's going to be beautiful. I think walnut is the prettiest wood the US has to offer

Without a dedicated ground wire & should you become disconnected wouldn’t have any trailer breaks .

Run a separate ground wire from both the trailer & truck, which you plug together when using so as not to worry about your rusty balls.
In the UK we have to have the ground through the plug and socket, not relying on a metal to metal contact on the hitch.
I'm used to the frame of the trailer being grounded as run a ground wire From the wiring harness with the flat pig tall fastened to frame
In Australia as well. The ground connection is part of the wiring harness.
There is in the USA also.

That's the plan!
If you are grounding through your ball truck or trailer not wired correctly. Should be grounding through plug!
The gentleman loading those logs is a pro, loved seeing his precision!
You should never rely on the ball for a ground. There should be a ground in your harness, be it 4 or 7 way.
Get you a tennis ball and make an X slit in it an put some dio electric grease in it to use as a cover when not pulling anything
Saving to watch during breakfast and hot cup of 'offee.
Same here in Texas
Note to self , NEVER GROUND through the trailer ball
To prevent your balls from rusting, use a hole in a tennis ball!
....just put some vaseline on your ball.... protect and lube, all a once
Run a ground wire, no more rusty Balls
You're gonna get a boat load of folks yelling about grounding a trailer. According to the engineers, the ball should not be the ground. However, it works.
the white wire you ground to trailer frame and truck that way when you plug in wiring it grounds through the white wire

that's why I have several set ups like that in their run for dust baths,
If your balls are rusty, you should figure/hope on the "receptacle" to be equally rusty.
don't keep your balls exposed to the weather put them away in your tool box and ground your trailer though the plug not the ball sham on you letting your balls get rusty lol
A additional step use axle grease on the ball it lubes the hitch plus adds a rust prevention layer
Glad I live out here in the dry high desert country, those rusty balls sounds pretty bad.

Nope my trailer manufacturer told me mine is grounded through the hitch not the wire harness. Hence why it worked after removing rust.
THE GROUND IS NOT SUPPOSED TO GO THRPUGH THE BALL!!! THERE IS A TERMINAL IN YOUR WIRING FOR THE GROUND.
😄👍

Never rely on grounding through the coupling. All circuits MUST run through the trailer plug.
Might want to have your plug checked out because number one on a seven wire plug is ground.

The ground on your trailer should be through the cord plugged into your truck, not through the ball.
