But man, poor poor Seregios. First his Weapons lose their roll sharpening gimmick and it becomes an armor skill and now Velkhana comes along and not only still has Frostcraft but her Weapons also gained a new hidden ability.^^
someone at the team must have hated Steve enough to ruin his gear.
And it still has no fucking Variant or Subspecies while in 4U alone, Gore had three forms...

The highlight of this update is definitely the turf wars. Velkhana has some excellent conflict with Magnamalo and Malzeno, and there's an add now where its fights with Kush/Teo can have the advantaged dragon blast the other. Rajang is still the same animation, but overall a solid update to the Iceborne Wyvern's in-game contests.
We've definitely been missing out on fresh turf wars through the updates, since prior inclusions either reuse the base species or are arena only. Velkhana's a breath of fresh air in that regard, and much appreciated.

as a dual blades main i love that they tied it to the motion values i never got to fully enjoy Frostcraft in Iceborne because it drained too quickly

I can already tell you what the Great Sword Playstyle is going to be with this: Position>Charge Draw Slash>Strong-arm Counter>True Charge Slash>Power Sheath> Repeat.
It's basically the closest we're gonna get to classic crit-draw style in this game and it's gonna hit like a Freight Train. All you need to know is what monster attacks can be Strong-arm countered and you're golden.
One neat thing I’ve found that this lends itself well to is gemming in wide range and a bit of speed eating on greatsword. A crit draw build that encourages you to sheathe and reposition gives you the perfect chance to heal yourself and others in multiplayer between hits, and if you’re still new to fighting a monster or otherwise find yourself getting pummeled, you can still contribute by helping the other hunters stay healthy and keep their uptime while also focusing on your own survivability to not fail the hunt
Thoughts on its synergy with Surge Slash? Most combos are only a few hits, and since you sheathe between to wait for the next opening, seems like you can maintain max buff all the time. Focus and Crit Draw can be rolled off with crafting to make the pieces more useable.
Surge slash and arguably rage slash have become the go to for multi-player where you can't really control what of the 8 plus targets its going to go after.
Frostcraft is so gooood combined with GS draw playstyle (which the armor already supports)! Just the hit-and-run attacks alone do nearly 1k every time

great ability for me I just run around with my weapon sheathed eating potions 90% of any fight.
Sadly no large elder dragon gems lol. I've got some kind of insane bad luck.
Wyvernsnipe is deadly with this. Works great because I always have the special ammo round pre-loaded going into a fight.
Very nice and easy to pull off with Wyvernblast ammo too.
Frostcraft and Power Mantle were practically designed for HBG 😊
I had a ton of fun with a frost-draw LS build last time, looking forward to bringing it back.
HBG Wyvern ammo charge and wyvern snipe is gonna be awesome sauce. Weeks of testing ahead....good times.

I had totally misread Frostcraft to mean that ANY time the weapon is unscathed the gauge would fall and, as a hammer who doesnt run flinch free thats already constantly bullying for space at the head against horns, longswords (one of those cheeky buggers kept ruining my attacks the first time I fought Velkhana, first time i was ever legit mad at another player for that kinda bs), greatswords, and even other hammers, I kinda wrote it off as a skill that probably wouldn't be too useful for me.
My question is does frostcraft affect shelling on gunlance? If yes I would like to see a bullet barrage and sheath playstyle lol

Ooooh, I wonder if crit draw Dragon Piercer is viable again with this. Not sure how the play style will transfer from World to Rise, but I'm interested to find out.

Ls and GS users are all excited, meanwhile us insect glaive mains are still praying for the Airborne decoration from MHW to come to Rise.
8:17 ONE situation, using bladescale hone to restore sharpness requires the weapon out. Very fringe and unlikely but technically exists lol
Well what a coincidence that the armor has focus and the hbg has sleep ammo and wyvernfire ammo :)
Also it has wyvernsnipe
So just put the monster to sleep , switch to charged shots and blow it to pieces with a fully charged wyvernfire shot and a couple of high damage wyvernsnipes
I wish hitting insta block with Lance would recharge the frost craft gauge. Damn that would be fun

I'm having fun with Sacred sheath + frost craft.
All of this is on top of the fact that Velk weapons allow the Frost meter to increase faster and (I think, don't quote me on this,) decrease slower. Bear in mind, most if not all Velk weapons are on par with the Scorned Magna weapons, having similar raw and a small amount of Ice in exchange for a slot.
So the Velk Longsword and Greatsword might become the Raw meta in the coming weeks, assuming people find that advantage worth it.
I've yet to beat Risen Valstrax, so I can't speak about that, but I imagine the armor would become Element Meta option tres.
I haven't gotten to fight her yet but I appreciate the the heads up about the armor and weapon skills, gonna be farming after work today.
I'm unsure how well this'll work with the SA. To me it seems to get the element discharge you either have to run compressed or do a tricky balancing act and giving up some nice QoL skills.
For Lance you can actually Insta-Block while sheathed, and the counter is already solid damage. Paired with some offensive guard, the damage could be sick.
it wont. The devs didn't give the Lance switch skills much love thought or effort and despite the fact that i can't stress enough how fun lance is in this game and how fun the new switch skills can be, this lack of thought causes some problems.
-You're better of just keep hitting the monster with Anchor rage (AR) (15%buff) and insta block...why? well:
-using sheathing retreat (SR) with AR and Frostcraft (FC) won't work cause sheathing removes the AR Buff. So you would need to SR first then wait and do nothing (as to not lower the FC bar) till the monster does a ig hit to get the AR buff and then hope that after the AR counter you have enough bar left to get an insta block off. Then repeat every couple of hits.
The only other option that i see would be SR+skywards thrust+ FC....how ever Skywards thrust is only good against a some monsters since the damage depends not on the players skill to find an opening or to aim for the waekspot, but on the monster having a tall hitzone that is a weakspot.
The sad thing is, if the Dev's actually had cared about lance and "fixed" either of these problems or put enough effort into the new switch skills to not have these problems to begin with, then lance FC could have been good...maybe not meta, but really good. The AR strat would have enabled a 45% buff and the skywards thrust strat would have been really good if ST was abale to get it's full damage against all monsters regardless of size. The whole thing just reminds me of the AR anti-scaling with guard and insta block being really bad in base rise, which took the entire community getting outraged after the switch skill trailers for them to care enough to fix. So i wouldn't get my hopes up. =(
As an Insect Glaive main… I’m happy you all got a nice new skill lol. I don’t think IG is the kind of weapon that can use this. Oh well, I’m just happy we got some new cool hunts

Sacred sheath longsword is going to do big damage now especially cause the chest and arms are really good for longsword

I don't think frostcraft will make sense for DB, since every sheath is a DPS loss and you should be attacking virtually 100% of the time. Hammer strength builds might make sense for it, and maybe some switchaxe builds, but I think it's unlikely to be meta for many weapons since the downtime will take away from DPS.

As a great sword main, I dream of the day where we can reach 10K damage in ONE true charge! Today may not be that day, but one can dream... while making a proper build to get the highest damage possible!

@AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Difficult to top freezing and shattering other Monsters. Makes me wonder how cold Velkhanas ice breath actually is.
My vote would be Malzeno. The way you can watch Rathalos feebly struggling as he slowly has his blood drained, ultimately just going limp in the dragon's jaws, is horrifying. At least Velkhan's flash-freeze is quick, but Malzeno taking its time is unnerving.
Basically, it's a long sword and great sword skill. I can ignore the armor set for the most part
I’m not entirely sure, but since the new anomaly slot bonus gives you free attack on any weapon that’s status or raw, doesn’t that mean scorned magnamalo still has the best great sword since some of the attack bonus is lost on element for velkhanas weapon?

Yeah, here's the synopsis of my first hunt with Risen Valstrax:
For some reason, Valstrax decided that my back needed to go airborne, and then make sweet sweet _love_ to some lasers... *EvErYtHiNg HuRtS.*
Also I'll be farming him for that sweet armor and 2 of the Draconheart Decos... Oh I'm in for a world of pain.
Get 2 cart on my first risen valstrax before. Tbf never tried using Switch Axe against even the normal CG Valstrax one
The other great thing about frostcraft is it has no wonky mechanics like elem exploit where you have to hit element weak zones. It’s just a reliable boost to everything
As soon as I saw that Velkhana was the title update monster one of my first thoughts was, "YESSS!!! FROSTCRAFT IS BACK!!!" The armor pieces not being the best doesn't really bother me because there could be worse skills attached to them. At the very least Quick Sheath and possibly Crit Draw will help with weapons like Greatsword. (Which is the weapon I'm gonna go out of my way to get Frostcraft for especially.) Also I noticed some elemental skills that I may use for some gunner and dual blade builds.

Frostcraft sns was fun to play around with in iceborne, but it's about to get insane with metsu and shield bash.
It great for Insect Glaive's 3 hit tornado slash combo or 4 hit diving wyvern combo, since both stay with in the 3 segment (20%) of frostcraft.
These are you bread and butter dps combo for IG.
Also the three frostcraft pieces have 3 points in skills IG does need and can be rolled off for better skill with armor augmentation.
Honestly I don’t think this is the case anymore, since title update 5 added Kinsect Supercharge, i feel like awakened kinsect attack is stronger than using frostcraft diving wyvern
Being a GS player this is just great. Also thinking this is good on Hammer since I play both. Guess all three of my original weapons can make the best use of it, the third being SnS. Not sure how it'd help with Savage Axe CB or either Lance.

so after playing around i managed to get blessed by rngesus and get a rimeguard with 3 4 slots which i then used to give full dragonheart and so far the max attack i have gotten is around 7352
Does frostcraft also buff shelling damage on GL? Would be pretty cool to mess around with 30% extra shelling damage lol

Velkhana armor helped carry me on Shara Ishvalda and then some time afterwards.

Hi good Sir Josh, i have a question as a SA main. I'm sorry if i will not use the correct names of things but i don't know actually the rigth names in eng. So, does the buff count if i use the "plant a charge dmg into the monster with the wirebug flying move"? Or it doesn't? Does the delay explosion get the buff or just "physical hits" get it?

This still only helps a wepon that spends 40% of the hunt sheathed. Not even long sword gets that much out of it.
Yeah, doesnt seem very usefull for bow at all. The bow is almost always drawn, unless I need to eat or superman dive.... maybe just for dragon piercers, but dragon piercers are usually used after a combo......or for wake up. I don't know i'm not going to invest in these armor pieces yet.
if its based on hits how can the demon ability for dual blades work? Its way more than 2 hits when you use the attack?

Why do people keep referring to Velkhana as 'her' when the intro cinematic refers to him as "Lord"?
Its not really as universal as it was in the past. So Lord can still work for girls.
But it’s not useful on all weapons cause not all weapons can use Quick Sheathe, Focus, AND Crit Draw. Which is what the three pieces come with.
You can roll those skills off and get better skills and/or more slots on it
