    Tom Jones was a superstar going all the way back to the 60s, so I'm pretty sure Mark Knopfler was more in awe.

    Such a powerful and emotional performance from both Mark and Tom! This song was actually written by Charlie Rich, but this is a take on the version Mark created with The Notting Hillbillies.

    For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's worth checking out the recent Sky Arts series "Johnson and Knopfler's Music Legends". Mark and fellow Geordie Brian Johnson, lead singer of AC/DC, get together with other famous musicians for a chat with a few off-the-cuff tunes. The first episode featured Tom Jones.

      Probably a poor choice of words on my part. I meant, I personally underrated Tom Jones. And feel bad for it, because his voice is sublime! I'm aware how popular he is all over the world. Warm wishes from Romania ☺️💚

    • @cosmicdebris2223
      @cosmicdebris2223 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MerchantOfAlba Yes, I had a hunch that's what you meant. If one personally hadn't been so aware of him then you're correct! I agree in most cases with your videos and it's good to see you appreciating the many artists that you do. It's sometimes quite impressive how you both are able to hear out the passions or the messages coupled with the genius of the music itself. Music is of course a universal language. I too also very much like Richard Hawley (as it seems you both do too), who you reacted to, and believe it or not, he actually isn't that well known internationally. I'm a Brit but live in Germany and here he is totally unknown (!!) which is crazy really. But there are possibly other reasons for that since the German public have always in the past been subjected to an organisation called GEMA who by way of specific forms and ways of marketing have promoted some artists and simply ignored others for reasons that cannot be understood. 🙂👍

    Thanks for this. Really special. My favorite singer is Tom Jones. I also love listening to Robin Gibb, Ray Charles, Steve Marriot, Smokey Robinson, John Mellencamp, Brook Benton, Paul McCartney, Steve Perry, Eric Burdon, Ed Ames, and Gabriel Henrique.
    Stevie Ray Vaughan tops my list of favorite guitarists, a list which definitely includes Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, and Joe Bonamassa.
    As for favorite singer/songwriters... there are Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Dolly Parton, and Paul Simon who are just some of those who make my list.
    Of course there are many more artists with amazing vocals, mastery of musical instruments and composing, specials gifts for writing lyrics, and just a way of captivating audiences with their talent and presence. Many share multiple gifts as singers, musicians, composers, lyricists, and charismatic performers. What a wealth of talent! So many artists to enjoy, and more to discover (old and new).
    Here are several performances you should check out:
    -- The video of Tom Jones singing "Love Letters" with Jeff Beck on guitar. Very moving!
    -- A live performance by a young Stevie Wonder singing "Money"... playing piano and harmonica to a small in-studio audience for Italian TV.
    -- Lonnie Mack (with Stevie Ray Vaughan) doing "Oreo Cookie Blues." (It will put a smile on your face!)
    -- John Farnham covering The Beatles "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
    -- Tom Jones with his impassioned "I Who Have Nothing," featured on his TV show (This Is Tom Jones) in 1970.
    -- An earlier Tom Jones with his wistful rendition of the song "Autumn Leaves," in a live performance on French TV from 1965.
    Love your reactions! Am looking forward to more.

    Have a look at 'Local Hero' by Mark. Both me and him come from Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England. As do many famous people and musicians; The Animals, Pet Shop Boys, Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Sting, The Lighthouse Family, Andy Taylor, Ant & Dec, Brian Johnson, Brian Ferry, Prefab Sprout, Lindisfarne, and Sam Fender..to name a few. Local Hero is used as the walk out theme for Newcastle United home games. Truly an icon anthem.

    I used to watch Tom Jones on TV here in Canada back in the 1960s and 70s. He would have special guests every week and the show was broadcast from a casino in Las Vegas. Tom is incredibly strong, too! I saw him tear a 3 inch phone book in half with his bare hands right on TV. So, don't insult Tom or you may live to regret it, LOL!
    And as for Mark Knopfler, what is there to say? The first time I heard him was when Dire Straits first album came out way back in 1978 and I knew right away that he was one of the best guitarists in the world. That album is just incredible and still knocks me dead to this day. They took so many of there songs from JJ Cale's "Naturally" album from 1972 and simply re-crafted them to suit their tastes, but they freely admit that JJ was one of their guitar heroes and they were mightily inspired by him. 🎸🎸🎙👌💖💖💖☺

    • @BasMeijer
      @BasMeijer 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      "They took so many of there songs from JJ Cale's "Naturally" album from 1972 and simply re-crafted them to suit their tastes" Seriously, where did you get that from?!? All Dire Straits songs have been written by MK himself. But, he was certainly influenced by the brilliant JJ Cale.
      P.S. Only "Money for Nothing" has Sting as a cowriter because Sting's record company demanded that, since the phrase "I want my MTV" was sung like "Don't Stand So Close to Me", written by Sting

    • @ToddSauve
      @ToddSauve 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BasMeijer It is exactly as I said it is. Play the two albums side by side and see if you can't draw a line directly from one Dire Straits song to another JJ Cale song. That is not to say they are a direct copy as that would be liable to copyright infringement. But the Blues is a genre that easily allows for derivation. Even JJ admitted that he used certain guitar licks from other guitarists and changed them only slightly for his own purposes.

    • @BasMeijer
      @BasMeijer 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ToddSauve It is clear from JJ Cale's interviews about MK that he does not agree with you, as he said on radio in 2004: "Mark Knopfler didn't cut any of my songs, but I think he listened to a couple of my early albums and he got that groove (radio, 2004)". Sadly you do not provide any resource that supports your claim nor can I find anything on Google.

    • @ToddSauve
      @ToddSauve 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BasMeijer I think we are saying the same thing Bas. Mark Knopfler and John Illsely said in a video interview that they listened to a lot of JJ (and some other bands) before putting out their first album. I can certainly hear the influence. I'm 66 and have learned a lot of this over the years, so not all of it is on the internet. I'm not making this up. Have a great day!

I only ask because I have watched the same video that yourselves and reactors in the UK and USA are showing, and the latter appear to be able to show the video with an unobstructed screen.
