Toyota Tundra: P0722 No Speed Signal

- In this video I have a look at a customers 2012 Toyota Tundra Rock Warrior that has an engine light, ABS and 4wd light on and a traction light! All that and it boils down to one code. A P0722. A P0722 code is stored when the PCM gets an incorrect or irrational input signal from the transmission's output speed sensor. I make a bad call along the way that works out good in the end. Sometimes you need to slow down to go fast folks.

I see tons of comments about the braided ground strap rotted off the trans. I did see it 👀. However this has NOTHING to do with the 2 wire A/C pulse generating speed sensor. Don't get distracted by something that doesn't apply to the current problem or you will go down rabbit holes. Think of it this way if you can't stop thinking it is, or could be the problem. If I had removed it completely you would never have know it was there and would never have thought it was the problem because you would have been focused on the facts and not the distractions 😉 And no... the missing ground strap could not "cook" or ruin the sensor in any other way. You have to trust me folks.....

It's interesting though, the more electronics you have the more you need to make certain that you have a good ground I guess.
His honesty should never be questioned, This man could of easily edited his mistakes out but kept it in the video, Most of my lessons come from my mistakes .. That is a REAL man working on these videos, they are great !

Hey Eric, I am an automotive wiring technician (I work on classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, etc.), and I have cerebral palsy and I know what it's like to be frustrated with communicating. When you said "I do know in my head I speak perfectly clear though", that is exactly how it is for me all the time. I think you're doing a great job with your speech and it will get better soon. Your perseverance with your dental appliance has inspired me to try to use mine more regularly, even though I can barely understand myself with them in.

Besides the entertainment value of the SMA videos, Mr O has done one thing for the auto mechanic community. He has shown that a logical approach is the only way to diagnose the modern auto.
As you say, those old style VR sensors can easily float their own ground independent of the transmission ground, since they make their own voltage and current, with the processor only coding frequency. For some reason I really liked this video, it has a perfect mix of entertainment and education. My wife caught me laughing out loud when you found your SMA shirt used by Andy as a shop rag.
It even had a pocket! What the heck Andy!
Poppin in on Andy's shop was very cool!! I love the small town vibe, and it adds another layer of interest to your channel. Big part of wrenching is BSing with your buds. Hope you can include little gems like that more often.

I’m not a mechanic, but I watch your videos often. It's always refreshing to watch someone who's good at their job. You think and speak in "mechanic/technician, a language I don’t even understand. Yet, it's interesting. An honest, competent mechanic is worth his weight on gold.

You are a bad a** my friend. I have been automotive Tech for 25 years. you make wiring problems that I will pull my hair out over and over. simple I've learned a lot from you I'm opening my own shop dream Come true 25 years in the making. My skills are more Orientated In Engine mechanical Drive train And differential. I'm a little dyslexic and I have to constantly double check myself with electrical stuff to make sure that my connections are solid for my test equipment. And I'm not over thinking. You are truly one of the best Technicians I've seen Probably the best on TH-cam. And I'm no dummy Let my certifications lapse but used to be a California Smog technician. In my experience speed sensors are just like Cam and crank sensors Mess up High temp hot soak and then start working again 10 minutes later Sometimes no code make you nervous to drive the vehicle down the road cause you know you're gonna get stuck
Mr. O, I just wanted to say thank you for this video! I have an avalon that has been having the exact same issue, and it goes away when she's cold. The heat is the main issue I noticed, and since it's a Florida car, it'll happen just from being left in the sun. Great video, and always helpful!

You are the man Eric O! Im 32, and I smoked for 14 years and I didn't take care of my teeth well. So I've been suffering from some dental issues myself. I will eventually need dental work too. I use sensodyne rapid relief toothpaste and if I don't use it, I have horrible teeth pain. It's amazing stuff and helps me tremendously. We watch for you and your incredible knowledge and the way you teach us and explain things. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't know half the things I know about testing and diagnosing. I'll admit I was a parts cannon shooter for awhile. I'd read the engine light codes and just replace that part. But then I started realizing it's not always what the scanner says. And now I double and triple check before I make the call. If there's any haters in here, get em out. I'm gonna be ordering my SMA shirt this week! I've sent a lot of people your way too and it's the only automotive work and diagnostic channel I go to. Thank you for your dedication and doing videos for us when you don't feel like it. And taking time from your workday to shoot videos for us! You leaving the mistakes and second guesses in the videos is what separates you from other "mechanics". Talk about deja vu! I had the exact same symptom on my personal 2007 Tundra last year except it was a P0717 (ISS fault). Resistance on the sensor was in range and all that just like yours. I didn't have a scope (though this problem was a factor in deciding to get the AES Uscope). Since they're the same sensor, I ended up swapping the ISS and VSS and my P0717 turned into a P0722. Swaptronics for the win. If that wasn't an option, I would have winged a sensor at it anyway, so you're not alone in that. Good ol hope and prayer auto repair and tryignostics when it's your own vehicle 😆
Those of us that need a vehicle fixed know it’s not hard to find a mechanic, but it is hard to find a good one with integrity. They only thing that changes with Eric is his hair color and now his speech. All other atriabuts are still the same over the years we have watched. A good man, father ,and husband are definitely his best atriabuts. Nice work sir.
I use a great method for avoiding the seatbelt dinger. I put the seat belt on. London cab drivers are exempt from wearing seat belts but most of us just put them on anyway. It's a lot better than bullseying the windscreen.
Back in the 70s and 80s I disabled every seatbelt dinger, buzzer, bell and monotonous female computer voice. In the 90s I bought a car with passive shoulder belts -- no defeating them. I learned to put my belt on. I put it on every time now. It's a good idea, but I hate that I was socially engineered into accepting it.
@@jamespfitz Nobody likes being told what to do even if means getting injured to prove their point. Everybody thinks that they are such a good driver that those accidents only happen to stupid people. I also know that nobody cares what my opinion is. Stay safe it's a jungle out there.

My son just got a expander himself. You two sound the same. Especially the S sound. Played him a ‘South Main’ video to show him he not alone in his speech impediment. Tell you the same as him that it will get better with time. Love your video’s.. Keep up great work.

Hey Eric! Hope you see this out of the thousands of comments. But I own a shop in California and I would love to see your diagnostics steps on a no crank no start situation for this type of vehicle in the video. Preferably the 4wd version with the outcome of being a starter needing to be replaced. I had to tackle this at my shop. The “easiest” I found was to take the starter apart on the car and remove it and then take the new starter apart and reassemble once in the car to avoid removing the front wheel drive axle

Always educational as well as entertaining. I'm glad that you are continuing with content in spite of the speech issues. It does remind me of a story that I learned in grade school. I may remember it wrong, but it was about a young man in ancient Greece who had a speech impediment. He learned to speak more clearly by putting pebbles in his mouth and forcing himself to speak. Eventually, he became a great orator.
By the way... "Welcome back to Sauf Mein Oddo" is kind of a cool way to start all your videos. 💪

Sometimes Mr. Eric O, we all are so close to the problem we can't see it at first. I think you are the world's greatest mechanic/automotive technician. I might be slightly biased, but I wish you could work on my wife's jeep. It's been at the shop for 6 weeks for front-end work, wheel bearing assembly, and ball joints. I called to check on it, and we are working on it is the reply. I don't know if it is a problem getting parts or not. I just wish they would give updates. It is just my wife's daily driver she just likes the 1999 Jeep Wrangler. I hate calling them because I don't want to pressure them, but would appreciate knowing.

Great find. I had an Impala speed sensor go bad. Installed a new aftermarket one and it worked fine for a couple days then started having intermittent problems. Took it to a dealer mechanic friend and he couldn’t find anything wrong. He was checking resistance and inadvertently bumped it and resistance when to zero. So much for new parts. Installed new OEM good to go.

A few years back, I got veneers on my front teeth, and afterward I had for the longest time a horrible lisp, but it did go away. I’m confident you’ll get over it as well. Good luck. Cheers.
I have a 2008 Tundra and had the same issue with the output speed sensor, resistance tested fine cold and when it was in the truck and ran for a few it would throw the code. Replaced the sensor and the issue was resolved. This also happened to on the input speed sensor and same thing, tested good on resistance unit it was warm then failed, which was only a year later.
I wanted to just thank you the videos and the fact that you like cars and live in NY mad me get back into working on cars again so again I say THANK YOU

I've seen and replaced a lot of bad sensors but never ran into one that just went open circuit with a low amount of heat. Good thinking ; my work motto was fix it right the first time so I appreciate your work !!!!!! And I did subscribe too

Welcome to the South Main Toyota Channel! Don't worry Eric, I understand you just fine. I was born with a Split Uvula and a Cleft Pallet. I had to do years of speech therapy to learn how to say nearly every phonetic in the english language differently than everyone else. I couldn't do S until I was about 12 and I didn't get really good at them until I was 14. Most people make the S sound putting there tongue against the top of there mouth. I do it by putting it against my bottom teeth.
Another reminder we're all carrying burdens and most aren't visible. Bully for you, for putting in the hard work to overcome your disability. That's inspirational.

Hey Eric, seatbelts are in the vehicle for a reason! If you reconfigure your body because of non-seatbelt use, I fear your SMA video output will decline substantially, then what do us mere mortals have to look forward to!
Very refreshing to see the use of service info like you do. No matter how smart we think we are briefly going over service info is awesome. It stops one from making assumptions and the dreaded rabbit holes. Others we see jump right in and “think” they know more than they actually do and wind up making mistakes because they assume they know more than they do. Don’t know why some techs think it’s a personal insult to have to use service info to help understand what they are working on better. It stops mistakes that lead to unneeded work and excess cost to customers.
Also great work showing how temperature effects testing and how we need to test sensors at a range of temperatures the equals the normal range of operation. I like to monitor signals while allowing for a warm up cycle if possible. Many will scope a signal quickly and move on to other checks and miss drop outs or total LOS. Overall great video showing 100% the proper way to attack this type of failure.
love that well used Gulf hat, we had them in Canada till mid 80's. Haven't seen them in a long time except when I travel to US
Eric, not sure if this helps, but I also saw that the transmission ground wire was completely rusted off. I replaced mine on my 2010 Tundra a few years ago just because the engineers placed it there for some reason, usually to reduce EMI or EMF noises generated by ignition systems. I was told the speed sensors can not be intermittent. You proved that can be! Our Saturn ran and then quit. Later it would run again. Changed the speed sensor and it always ran fine.
