Preferred Sprout is a hidden gem. These TH-cam videos left me in awe-their live performances sound almost identical to the album versions. The songwriting is beautiful, and they execute it with remarkable precision.
Remember buying Swoon as a 22 year old back in 1984, Stunning album and such an underrated band. Very lucky i grew up in the times of sublime music. Bring back the eighties, they were special special times,
Me too.!!!.. Got into them when I listened to them throughout the day when I worked for a Fashion chain at the start of the 90s and I heard them tunes calling me. Still got the tapes and had to get the pencil out to save the precious scrambled tape. Moon dig is a past favourite of mine.
Melts ya heart…genius word smiths ….Wendy works for the Sage in Gateshead …saw her a few years back on the quay side …recognised her immediately and just turned into a quivering mess…
Much as I like them, live doesn't seem to add much to the recordings. But then when we are talking about the recordings on Steve McQueen then that's not surprising as they, with Dolby's help were really as good as you could get!
@@HarryFlashman. I wish I had seen them to find out for sure. I've seen stuff on here obviously. I think they and Paddy have their moments live when a bit of passion is put into things but I can't imagine ever finding a concert of theirs electric in the way that many other bands can achieve. So yes, maybe I'm saying they're less good live than recording studio! Happy for anyone who saw them to come on here and tell me they were brilliant live!
He's called Michael Graves. He's on most of their gigs and TV appearances I've seen from the mid-1980s, and in some of the promotional music videos too (he's also credited as part of the band at the start of the video for Appetite). I'm not sure if he's on any of the albums though. I think he carries a lot of musical weight at these gigs, really excellent playing!
Awful BBC studio sound (they seem to have one foldback monitor for the whole band), legendarily terrible BBC camera work - neither of these things can disguise the genius of Paddy McAloon and the talent of the Fabs.
The first lp, Swoon, i thought was equally excellent. If you ask me, they went a bit off after Steve Mcqueen. I am not sure what happened. Jordan:The Comeback was positively dreadful. Wendy was great. What sort of motorbike was it they were sitting on, for the cover of Steve Mcqueen, anyone? I still love the record. Younger people, i am fifty five, tend to say that it sounds very eighties, and kind of cliched, but i guess one either loves it or is unaffected. Like so much great art and music. The Cocteau Twins, for example. One of a kind.
I definitely agree with you, Swoon is an amazing album, and I'm actually surprised by the amount of quality it has for a debut album. I have to ask though, I quite liked Jordan: The Comeback, why do you dislike it? I have heard there are mixed opinions about the album, but I've never been able to get the chance to hear a negative one.
@@benjivintage i am not sure, exactly, why i did not take to the lp. It is a fair while since i listened to it. I certainly did not buy it. I remember it being released and a friend of mine borrowing it from our local library and recording it for me! I was quite poor, at the time, and did not have the luxury of being able to splash out money on records i was unsure of. It was a double lp, i think, which is always a difficult endeavor to achieve, successfully. Usually it just goes on for far too long and needs to be edited. I think the only double lp i can mention, where every track is essential, is The Smashing Pumpkins Melloncollie and The Infinite Sadness, which is a masterpiece, without any shadow of a doubt, in my humble opinion. Paddy does some weird narrative, voiceover part, as though he were the ghost of Elvis Presley or something, which seemed completely stupid. Plus, it came after The King of Rock ' Roll, which i did not rate overly well. I quite liked Cars and Girls, and their was an extra track, on one of the twelve inch singles, The Golden Calf, which was really great. But, really, hot dog, jumping frog! Where had all the poetry, subtely, understatement, nuance and setiment/romance, satire gone. Or was i missing the point?

.... if there are any kids watching, this is what you call a proper band.
This is the start of the wet post new wave smooth non entities more like...
Great sound... great group..
I'm 68... retired...and still enjoying....the sound...
It's clever music...
Such a treat to see and hear these immeasurable songs performed live.

When Love Breaks Down ... still sounds utterly mesmeric
I’ve loved them for 30 years and never took the time to watch video of them. Dear Lord they are even better in living color ! Still have my cassette !

Steve McQueen is listened to at least once a week since 1985 in my house. I am off to listen to it now ❤
It must never be forgotten. Keep it going.
Superb band so underrated love them
Takes me back to the 1980s. What a band. Ol' Paddy was some songwriter. I would have loved to seen them live. Thanks for sharing.
That jiggly jangly guitar ❤
Melts ya heart…genius word smiths ….Wendy works for the Sage in Gateshead …saw her a few years back on the quay side …recognised her immediately and just turned into a quivering mess…
She's absolutely lovely.
Your still in love with Hayley Mills .....mad props for Prefab Sprout

Grandi esponenti della romantic music
Great album! Great band!
The heart melting beauty of Wendy Smith.
I agree.
Oh my word. I should've tried harder to see these guys live.
My brother saw them in the 80's.. I was too young, but he still says it was one of the best concerts he's ever been to..
Me too
They rarely played live and didn't pay their dues...........
Me too ... and I had the chance too.😢
I too own all of their music. On vinyl and CD. Love it. Unique sound for music lovers.
Awesome! Music is mesmerising and the lyrics are just poetry! Outstanding!
Superb band Golden Calf is one of my fav songs evdr
I wasn't a big fan but I think they were massively underrated, great band.
Not a big fan ? Wtf Steve Welsh. They're class. 🏴🇬🇧

So, what you're saying is - they're no good live!

Who's that on keyboards with them?
Not sure but seen him before with them

I never knew he finger picked that song.
Proof you can be clever to the point of Genius and still be commercial.
Whatever happened to Andy Kershaw?
Were that shot in Kilburn?

Very plastic 1980s shallow - yes!
Never got to grips with this band - prob cos they were a bit too 'nice' - ugh.
Correct! A few nerds at college like them though!
never saw Prefab live.. tanx SleepyWulf.. xo
