Pure talent and sadly missed except by those of us who understand just what a brilliant songwriter Paddy was and still keep their music alive. You'd think this was mimed it's so close to the studio version....and yet of course it's live and highlights just how good the band were. Bought A life Of Surprises in the mid 80's and play it constantly and consider myself fortunate to have happened on them.
Simply ....one of my all-time favourite bands ever. Was lucky enough to see them live a couple of time and have most of their albums. Totally under-rated - but that's often the case with the most talented bands.
Love the fantastic applause for the band that none of the audience seemed to know. Hoping that they all left with as much love for Prefab Sprout as all of us fans still have today. ❤❤❤
@@Johnmag1976 Just noticed they are playing to a backing track. Not sure if the vocals are live but the music isn't. Back then many Euro TV studios weren't able to do live music recording.

@@BudSchnelker I think they were more likely to be thinking "I'd rather be at the Donegal County Show checking out the cattle prices. What on Earth is this weird group we're listening to anyway? Why can't they have something nice like the Chieftains..."
On this 80s talk show, I was really pleased to see Paddy doing a live vocal (to a backing track). Quite refreshing and showcases his vocal talent. (Look carefully, there’s only one cable to Paddy’s mic and nothing from the bass or Wendy’s too).
Well said! All three that you mentioned are in my top 5 favorite bands of all time, with Prefab Sprout being my favorite band of all time. Throw in Big Star & Badfinger, you’ll have my top 5.

GREAT vocal performance. Sounds like the rest of the track is the studio recording, but so so good. I can't even count the number of times I listened to this song when it came out. Wore out a lot of walkman batteries.
I do believe I can hear live Neil's snare on top of the original recording. All the fills and nuances are too specific to not be. He's just playing the kit lightly to fill it in. Still love it.
Wow, this band is great. Where was I in the 80s? If you like this, another good missed track is China Crisis: Black Man Ray. Oh I miss those days. th-cam.com/video/WTWcbaXS-ZU/w-d-xo.html

I think that Paddy had similar childhood Sundays as me.... eating over-boiled sprouts in the grandparents' prefab! (in my case going from Reigate to Rushden for the w/e, and not by car)
Theyd of thought , ohh i dont like this , then weeks later they hear it again , played by wogan on bbc r2 and by this point its too late , paddy has set up camp in your mind and its got parking and a hot tub , so from there on everytime you here prefab sprout it closes the door to the rest of your life and carry’s you away in a boat made of starlight on a lake of love . I knew Martin he is an amazing man and teacher. He was my course leader. Shame the band isn't together anymore.
But there are definitely parts being played that are not accounted for by the personnel on camera
None of the guitars r plugged in
