Heck, one of the greatest games of the large-scale battle shooter genre subtype, and doing something most games STILL haven't properly worked out, like the land/space field transition.
The saddest part is that all of these ideas and mechanics are now possible to implement and improve but the industry and most of the players are obssesed with ultra tealistic graphics, competitive multiplayer and microtransactions, we have the power to create a genuinely fun and immersive star wars experience with huge maps, space to ground combat and a great story but we choose the generic cash grabbin' formula over and over again, I really wouldn't mind if the game looks like a 7th generation title if the gameplay is sólid, the scale is massive and the action feels like a real conflict, we're missing a great opportunity just for the shallowness of "new generation standards" I think there's a middle ground we can use to create something really amazing.
well... this WAS going to be competitive multiplayer and it would play exactly the same with realistic graphics. Microtransactions though... that DOES change multiplayer and is the blight that is killing them. That and the lack of LAN support.

I think Free Radical's ambitions far outstripped what they were capable of at the time. It was clear from the leaked developer build of BF3 that FR was looking to make the biggest and most comprehensive Star Wars game ever...the thing that seemed to kill the dev team in the end was that they forgot how increasingly grander ambitions can quickly spiral, which then leads to missed deadlines and budget guidelines
The game was canceled because pandemic studios went bankrupt and was bought out from another company. Usually when that happens all projects are canceled because their own teams are busy with their projects. The same thing happened with 1313 when Disney bought LucasArts.

KOTOR 3 and 1313 are contenders for the title. Though a big part of that is because KOTOR 3 happening would've meant that The Old Republic would had to have actually tried in its story and setting and 1313 presupposes the EA and Disney takeovers never happening.

We seriously got robbed of this, such a shame. If Disney had any sense to make a TON of money they just need to redevelop this from where it left off with modern graphics and systems. Landing a gunship behind enemy lines on a planet surface was so satisfying. If the enemy couldn't easily destroy it or some NPC friendly didn't take it.
Imagine an alternative world where Star Wars Battlefront III, Star Wars: Imperial Commando, Star Wars: KOTOR, Star Wars: 1313, and Star Wars The Clone Wars lasted for 8 seasons on Cartoon Network.
Don't really care about canon anymore these days, just give us a complete version of this game. Doesn't need the newest graphics, just make it run well and include all the cool features Campaign could end with a Starkiller appearance since they included Kota :)
Some of the 3D assets didn’t go to waste, they ended up in other games like Star Wars Kinect There is a more complete build based off leaked footage, but if it still exists it’s probably in the hands of a developer
No they didn’t Star Wars Kinect didn’t use any assets from bf3. TFU 2 and the also canceled first assault did reuse some ship models from it but that’s about it

Hey, i just started a re-reading of the Star Wars Legends books and i just rediscovered my love for the early to mid star wars era Since your question spiked my interest i also looked up the facts. AFAIK there is no more precise remark when BF 3 ends, but we know that the 2nd DS is destroyed 4y ABY (after the Battle of Yavin) and the Yuuzhan Vong (YZV) War starts in 25y ABY. In Legends 5y after Return of the Jedi the new enemy is grand Admiral Thrawn, who returns from the unknown regions. That might be the point where it get's tricky because Luke 'officially' (acc. to legends) starts his training academy on Yavin after the grand Admiral is defeated. He is pretty reluctant in excepting his Role as Jedi Master. At least this is what the original Legends says. Most of this was written even before the Prequel Movies were released. I bring all of this up because the YZV conceptually originated in this era and was continuied after the prequels came out. To answer your Question. In my Opinion, if we consider the development of Luke's character, it would make more sense to bring the ending of BF III more to the start of YZV Invasion but if we look more at the original Thrawn the sweetspot would be more like 3y after RoJ I see it this way. Many brilliant peoples contributed in many awesome ways to the Star Wars expanded universe and it would be spectacular if everything would align perfectly but it does not always. Can it be great fun? Absolutely! Hopefully this is somewhat helpful :)

as someone who's spent 1500 hours in ARMA 3 editor working on AI and my own level designs, i can tell you this was cancelled because the game was 25% finished at this point, maybe 33% but i heard that the developer made huge promises to lucasarts and then showed an underperforming product so it was scrapped, cause remember kids the easiest part about this is creating the levels, programming the AI and making the thing playable is where its at

A heated and personal dev-publisher relationship with insecure new publisher leadership flexing their muscles and putting on a budget hardliner character and cancelling a project that was nearing the finish line and wasting years of resources on a game that could’ve defined the gaming landscape

A big reason why it was cancelled was because they kept missing deadlines or lying about progress. I’m willing to bet 98% was them being cheeky, and only meant them making making assets not them putting it together.
The sooner we create and establish interdimensional travel, the better. Imagine the very good trades we'll get with universes where the likes of this, 1313, KotOR III, TFU II, and so on had become a fruitful reality.
I think the question “Why would they cancel this game?” demonstrates some disconnect between the people using software and the people making software. It’s expensive and takes a very, very long time. The developer build here demonstrates that the game had some cool ideas, but who knows how far along they were on their road map. It may have just not been feasible to finish the project.
If only we got this game. This game was incredibly ambitious, and probably would have been a Star Wars game that would have lasted for years. And the modding community for that game would be insane with all the potential mods for that considering how SWBF2 got space to ground maps and SWBF3 would have them by default.
It pains me that after more Battlefront games were made, none of them took any of the fun concepts like Dark Obi-Wan or Redeemed Vader - they leaked and were loved by fans, what an easy slam-dunk. I can see why it was going over-budget, but I think canceling that was really akin to shooting oneself in the foot. I just feel like it would’ve been a guaranteed hit and now it just doesn’t exist, just its ghost through content like this.
It looks like a cool game, with an interesting story. A linear story, with very limited scope of mechanics (it got a bit old with the whole "steals enemy ship and boards it to sabotage the ship" thing), but one that has a lot of curious character cameos, and story beats that I bet would be very enjoyable in a completed build of the game.
Even though we never got Battlefront 3, at least we did get something very similar that filled countless hours of my childhood, Battlefield 2142. Had the ground to sky combat which was the closet I feel like we ever got from a game developer

It's pretty cool to see what Battlefront 3 would've looked like if it were released. The maps is very nice, and its given a story of a newly rebel character. Shame that this game never seen the light of day.
bittersweet truly hits the nail on its head. Don't get me wrong BF2 did some iconic stuff, but this probably would've gone down as the best one from its multiplayer alone. So sad knowing this got canceled even tho it would've sold like crazy...just as sad as 1313 being canceled, maybe even more.

The ideas were interesting. Haven Call of the King prior, now this, then Ni Man's Sky dor seamlessground/space. If likr Elite Squadron more locked abilities then eh pass because some multiplayer handling would be annoying. For multiplayer sure. But sometimes unlocking thinfs makes sense per mode not a whole game. That or if instant action all unlocked makes sense. Planets whatever planned. I assume typical and like Renegade Squadron expanded universe.
Definitely a shame this was never finished. I remember hearing rumors that there would be a dark side Obi Wan. Which very glad that is not the direction they would have actually went

It's pretty cool to see what Battlefront 3 would've looked like if it were released. The maps is very nice, and its given a story of a newly rebel character. Shame that this game never seen the light of day.

A studio tried doing that for free and wanted to release it for free but were stopped by Lucasfilm/Disney.

You jest, but BF3 Yoda was obviously given a full sized lazer sword. And he was also made super tiny for some reason.

bittersweet truly hits the nail on its head. Don't get me wrong BF2 did some iconic stuff, but this probably would've gone down as the best one from its multiplayer alone. So sad knowing this got canceled even tho it would've sold like crazy...just as sad as 1313 being canceled, maybe even more.
This looks amazing. The fact they built such a vast playable universe and such a cool, detailed story and it was never released, is really disappointing.

The ideas were interesting. Haven Call of the King prior, now this, then Ni Man's Sky dor seamlessground/space. If likr Elite Squadron more locked abilities then eh pass because some multiplayer handling would be annoying. For multiplayer sure. But sometimes unlocking thinfs makes sense per mode not a whole game. That or if instant action all unlocked makes sense.
Planets whatever planned. I assume typical and like Renegade Squadron expanded universe.
Definitely a shame this was never finished. I remember hearing rumors that there would be a dark side Obi Wan. Which very glad that is not the direction they would have actually went

If what it would take to get games to actually DO something unique like this, instead of focusing the majority of their budget and QA on visuals, I'd be all for it. Give me a Halo 3 lookin game that plays buttery smooth while its simulating enough to otherwise make a graphics intensive game melt
If Free Radical's Battlefront 3 had been released it would simply be the best Star Wars game to date.
