Freddie thinks Benny starts playing/abstracting within the Stablemates form with rigor and integrity. Notice Freddie still intense with concentration at 8:37. By 8:52, Freddie breaks a grin. Then Freddie is taken aback by 9:09 and addresses the rhythm section players to express his disappointment, if not disbelief, that they all dropped the form. Evidently, Benny couldn't hang with Stablemates at this tempo so he BS'd his way around aimlessly. If you disagree about this, I want to hear from you. Just look at pianist James Williams' post solo reaction at 4:49-4:52. There is no justifiable reason for Benny to drop the form after everyone else in his band put in the serious work to blow over the tune. It is sad that Benny wasn't willing or able. Freddie thought the same thing.
@@davidsaenzsax5177 I really hope you're joking. It's very obviously an open duo between sax/drums. Trumpet solo, piano solo, drum solo, then open drum/sax duo, definitely an arrangement choice. None of it was BS or aimless.

@@ELPsteel Benny composed the tune which is fabulous and rightly praised. However, tossing out the form after everyone else labored triumphantly over it is shady and deserves criticism. Benny was exposed here and he has to own it. There is no other way to explain Freddie's negative reaction and disappointment. Benny should've counted it in slower so he could actually play over his own tune.
