My uncle, rest his soul, was the cool uncle who got me my first knife, a Victorinox, and it was the best Christmas present ever. Definitely influenced my love of knives ever since.

Merry Christmas to you and Thomas, my parents got me a Buck 110 for Christmas in 1981, I still have it and I carried to school back in the day and nobody cared that all the boys carried knives. How times have changed. Best wishes to all.

The Gerber LST was my first pocket knife with a clip. Gerber offered a model with a chicago screw and a pocket clip that attached through the lanyard hold. My brother in law appropriated it from me in 91 during a visit and it was his every day utility knife until sometime in the mid 2000s.
When I needed a small and unobtrusive knife, I got another LST, or whatever model of the LST that was smaller than the Maglite Solitaire.

DCA, help a brother out. I'm in search of the perfect gentleman's carry. I've seen a few knives check all the boxes, yet the perfect specimen eludes me. The CRKT Flat Out with it's needle-like blade (no belly) and pure design where the blade doesn't protrude when closed is excellent. The new Civivi Clavi is a direct hit on all of the aesthetics. The extreme sheepsfoot point and minimal profile rock. If I could find something like these with more premium materials (say $350 or less), well that would be THE BEE'S KNEES. Curveball: I don't like front flippers. Make the match. I'll call her "Angel."

Alternate for the Buck 112 Slim, check out the Ka-Bar Dozier. Very light and slim, inexpensive - though there's a D2 model that still comes in under the $50 limit. Has a clip, but no reason you couldn't take that off.

Buck gets much better performance from 420HC than almost any other company, thanks to their heat treat (and maybe a higher quality base stock producer). Can't compare to the 420HC on the Gerber LST, although I do love that knife.

Knife prices get crazy sometimes. I bought a Bugout a few years ago for around $115. The same green handle/grey blade is closer to $180. I, sadly, lost it at owkr one day and have held out on replacing it because to the current pricing. The Kizer Dropbear might be a solid replacement, even if a bit heavier.

My EDC for years now has been a Benchmade Barrage. It has done me well and I love that the knife has the ability to lock closed. Between a few previous experiences with knives coming open in my pocket and the extra peace of mind it affords with kids in the house, it’s something I’ve grown to love even though it adds an extra step in the opening process. Looking to expand my collection of folders and prefer knives that have this feature. Do you have any recommendations?

    Hey DCA,
I was hoping you could find me a knife that has been eluding me. I am trying to find a sub 3in(maybe closer to 2.5in) knife with micarta scales and has a button or crossbar lock. My favorite knives to carry are my Kizer mini sheepdog, Malibu, and Darkform Slimfoot. Yes, I do have a type. So, bonus points if you can find it in a sheep’s foot/wharncliffe blade with a stone wash finish.
    Thanks

Sharpening question: Whether I sharpen on a stone or fixed angle system, the heel always takes much longer to develop a burr. Is this common, is the thickness behind the edge thicker at the heel? Finally, is there a tip or trick to ensure the heel gets a burr more easily?
