  • The Celtics started 20-0 at home -- can some funky Denver defenses stop them? This watch along reaction film breakdown details the Nuggets weird defensive approach in this game, how Boston attacked Nikola Jokic, an unreal fake lane violation in a nail-biter.

    I'm pretty sure Jokic's fake going into the lane was deliberate. He's so damn smart and creative and comes up with out-of-the-box stuff all the time. He knew he could trick them and possibly force a lane violation on the Celtics. At least he got a jump ball out of it. Pretty clever.

      I'm also pretty certain that it was perfectly legal and should not have been a jump ball, but rather another free throw attempt. Having them jump the ball at mid court is maybe one of the strangest decisions I've ever seen in my 35+ years of watching the NBA, and I'm almost sure they just came up with this on the spot and it definitely isn't in the rule book anywhere, nor is there anything even close to it in the rules. If anything, the jump ball should have taken place near the elbow at the Nuggets basket, not at center court.

      I don't know if it's just sad the way it is now, or if we should be happy with what we had at one time, but in the 90's-2000's, this was literally how the game was played and it was great. We had champs like the Pistons, and game 6 of the 98 finals was literally each team in the 80's point range while Jordan had over half of his teams points. Everything they've done to increase scoring, namely rules changes against the defense and just flat out not calling travels, carries, or walks any more has watered down the game into something unwatchable at times. And even worse it hasn't ruined statistics, as comparing stats from different eras is almost completely pointless as nowadays, slightly above-average, non-All Star players are constantly averaging 20 or more points a game, and it's become virtually meaningless. Whereas at any other time in basketball history, and especially in the 90's-00's, averaging20 or more a game meant that at the very least you were an All Star caliber player, and averaging 25 PPG would generally put you in the top 10-20 players in the league, and if you were able to do so over 5+ season while attaining other accolades and awards, or even a ring was generally enough t get your name brought up as a HoF contender.

      @@augustgreig9420 yea idk, have you watch those 90's games recently ? there was so much iso, and the defense wasn't really able to do anything about it because of the illegal defense rule
      dont get me wrong, MJ obviously had some great games, but most of the games were just him isoing and screaming at the ref to whistle every illegal defense foul, not that fun tbh
      and obviously some iso from time to time is great, I just dont think it should be the absolute go to move every f-ing possession
      in my opinion that illegal defense rule change is one of the best ever, help defense is actually a thing nowadays and that's strategically quite interesting, forcing teams to actually play as teams
      also, you have to take into account that the scoring was awfully low in the 90's because 6 teams were added to the league in like 7 years and the talent pool was extremely diluted, to a point where the 3pts line was actually put closer to the basket for a while to increase scoring efficiency
      everyone is talking about the finales during the 90's but have you ever watch a Mavericks vs T-Wolves matchup from 94 ? you have to compare what's comparable, using one of the greatest team ever as the point of comparison for a whole era is quite dishonest intellectually
      + the 90's and early 00's are actually the odd spots of NBA history, most of the 80's had an actually faster pace than todays game, 70's and 60's were quite fast paced too and obviously the late 00's early 10's were the transition years to the playstyle we know now (small-ball, spacing, heavy emphasis on help defense and not on 1v1 defense etc..), with team like the Suns, Heat and Spurs being precursors in that regard
      + my grandfather (who was a European basketball player in the 60's) was screaming at his TV watching the 80's and 90's NBA because, from his point of view, travel and carries were not whistled, this is just some generationnal stuff, most people tend to think their era was tougher and stricter
      some dude from the 1920's probably screamed at players actually dribbling the ball in the 60's
      TL;DR: you have the absolute right to prefer 90's/early 00's NBA but acting like that era is the only good era of basketball is getting quite boring, a personal taste isnt the truth, and I get you, Nostalgia is one hell of a drug

    The only significant advantage Boston has over Denver is their 5th starter. Denver is better conditoned for their style of play to maintain effectiveness over the course of an entirety of a playoff run. People talk about if Boston hits x amount of shots means that they would have beat Denver. Thats basically conceding to the fact that Boston has not gotten better in meaningful areas compared to prior years. You are hoping that prayers fall when they can't shoot, where as Denver won with a double digit negaitve differential in transition points and poinrs from the 3 point line. Denver has an assortment of very good attacks while having an elite attack with Jokic ball, while Boston just has great all-around talent but little cohesion. That's even if Kristaps is durable enough to last long playoff runs, which is still a question mark. So yeah they can be the 65 win team when they use their plan A all the time against terrible regular season teams coming in with regular season intesity and a regular season gameplan. Against better teams in late playoff rounds its about when your plan A doesnt work and your response.

    • @benrobinson1841
      @benrobinson1841 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is an excellent analysis. By position, Boston has more talent (except for Jokić and Mal), but Jokić is like an elite quarterback who makes his receivers better. When the offense flows through him, Denver has so many ways of attacking the rim and making buckets from anywhere on the court. Jok's value added apart from scoring is insane. He accounts for somewhere between 20 and 35 ppg from assists alone (which is ludicrous) and he's one of the best rebounders in the game.

    • @benjihuynh2970
      @benjihuynh2970 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      There is still a bit of concern though. The Celtics famously had the better expected field goal percentage in the heat series. The "if everyone performs and makes shots" can be a very cruel hypothetical.

    • @MrKurbek
      @MrKurbek 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Would be a damn good series no matter what. There is hypotheticals on both sides that I believe would end up being the deciding factor. If the JT or JB get one or two more 3s to drop (or JT drives 2-3 more times per game) that can tip it to Boston. If AG + KCP make more baskets it would tip it for Denver. The mid series adjustments and schemes will be interesting if this is the Finals

AG went 0/6 from the field, Braun didn't do anything in 5 minutes, KCP had 5 points, etc. If you get the Nuggets in the playoffs it's Nuggets in 5, easy. Even if Boston has home court.

    • @deanhampton1527
      @deanhampton1527 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Could say the same thing about the Nuggets. Jokic missing that easy floater. MPJ wide open corner 3 miss. KCP and AG both air balled good looking 3s at the end.
