***A HUGE word of caution using pump e85 without a flex fuel sensor!*** not all pump e85 are created equal. Pump e85 can be a maximum of 85% ethanol but as low as 51% and if you dynotune at a low E content and then fill up at 80% the bike WILL run lean! You can get MASSIVE variances from pump e85 even at the same station from one fill to the next. You need to test the ethanol content. Test kits are cheap and easy to use.
THIS IS EXTREMELY TRUE ALL GUYS THAT RUN E FULL TIME KNOW TO TEST THE E AT THE PUMP BEFORE YOU FILL. LISTEN TO THIS MANS WORDS OR THAT ENGINE WILL BE TOAST!!!!
Lovin E85 for many reasons (more power, runs cooler, no emissions to worry about) It's a way better fuel. Hatein that it reduces your range so much on a small tank.
Should try doing a flex fuel sensor if your software allows mapping based on the sensor. E.g. the sensor will read the % of ethanol and the tune will be scaled in accordance with that percentage. This way, you don't need to switch maps.
The dynojet powervision and stock ecu do not support this. Most aftermarket ecu can easily do this, but I don't believe that includes the standard harley plug and play systems.
I been running e-85 on my lowrider for 6 months now, I have a great tuner and mechanic here in Miami and I’ve had 0 issues what’s so ever! Worth the switch. Ofc I can switch on and off with my dyno jet
You said almost $4 a gallon for gas. In Cali, E85 is almost $4. 87 is $6.49. Really beginning to hate this place. Most companies won’t even ship parts here. 👎 great content, boys!! Keep ‘em coming.
I’m in a “small town”. We’re treated a little better than cities like LA or San Francisco. We have Buck Owens and Korn and Merle. They show us respect, Dammit!! 😂
Your bike is sick block....gotta be just an amazing feeling seeing a stainless pipe with your name on it on your bike man....probly my favorite M8 harley I've seen besides the road king special moonshine did for that old dude with the blue trim on it...
Awesome video with excellent info. regarding the Pro's and Con's of running E85 fuel in Harley Davidsons. Currently building a 132 Cu.In.[all S&S] for my Road Glide ST (daily ridden). From an Engineering perspective and IMO, the ultimate street setup would be a system that can detect [measure] what's in the fuel tank [all E85, all gasoline, and any mixture blend of the two...like the system in the 2023 Dodge Challenger Demon 170], and make tuning adjustments. The alternative obviously is to run a Dyno Jet PV3b ('21 & newer M8 HD; PV3 for '17-'20 M8 HD) with two tunes...1 for all E85 and 1 for all gasoline (91-93 octane pump). Great content!!!
Interestingly, Jet-A is much closer to diesel than gasoline, so it unfortunately wouldn't work at all in a gasoline engine. You can actually run jet fuel in a diesel engine though.
Def either put a gm flex fuel sensor in there to monitor ethanol content and do a full flex fuel tune to have it adjust on the fly based on ethanol content or spend $10 on an ethanol tester and don’t fill up under what it’s tuned on. E85 can legally range from e70-e90 and can affect AFR’s. For us in states that have cold weather we also get what’s called winter blend with can be even lower than e70. Ethanol is a corrosive fuel as well and shouldn’t sit in lines or injectors too long. You could get gunk built up under the tips and could clog passages from being gunked up causing a flow issue which could lean out. Ultrasonic injector cleanings on a machine annually or bi annually is a good idea or don’t always run it to let 93 clean out the tips. I run ignite red and buy barrels of it for consistency. I would be very curious to see what Goldzilla would do on one ethanol r. That’s a killer fuel. English racing does a very good video tuning an evo full flex fuel where they do a full map starting on e10 and pouring in 10% more ethanol and doing another map so there’s a map on e10, e20, e30 etc and gained like 600hp throughout the tune with a gm flex fuel sensor and it will be able to switch maps on the fly based on ethanol content
I did a milage study on 03' FXDX comparing regular an high test fuels? Motorcycle ran fine with no damage. Effects were slight decrease in both milage an power, but almost unnoticed. I have an oil test machine an have tested major oil brands too. Octane is measured in tenths. So, if you read label increasing octane by one point, that does Not mean from 85 to 86 octane. That means 85 too 85.1 octane. My 88' GW, with Honda car motor is designed to be used in a car with regular fuel. So operating in lighter motorcycle is ok to use regular fuel! Two thing will happen with too much octane in fuel. Pre- ignition on deceleration exhaust pop, an reddish coloration of sparkplugs. Deceleration pop is my indicator an I don't care about reddish colored plugs,!
Cool to see this experiment. My brother’s got a ‘12 corvette with some engine work and and super charger. His computer recognizes ethanol gas, adjusts, and makes a lot more power.
I put about a gallon of E85 in my Dyna Low Rider S on the way to Sturgis, didn't really notice much. Why? I was in BFE and almost out of gas. As as I recall my mileage did go down. Glad I did not damage my baby.
Basically e85 runs cooler which is where the up to 20% bump in power comes from but with forced induction you want e85 since it increases your ability to increase compression without causing detonation due to its high octane levels.
I love e85! It’s like adding a power adder. IF you do add a power adder, E85 comes on even stronger and more efficient. Couple downsides, availability. If it sits too long it will gum up the injectors and pump. It’s a trade off. But what a trade off it is!!!! I’ve never done it to my bike but LS and coyote engines love some E!
Good to see you guys figure out whether or not it will run on E85. I know my son has his '04 Cobra on E85 and FL is pretty light on E85 stations when we were down there drag racing last Feb. His car has a flex fuel sensor so it automatically adjusts his tune based on alcohol content. Great video and I'd be curious on longevity with E85.
Hi 👋, BlockHead . That was very interesting, incredible amount of power increase, and I’ve noticed, and I think you said about your exhaust, his way way too short, I do not know anything about the dynamics. I would like to see the results on a bone stock bike. I'm thinking there would be little to no advantage. Just like running race fuel in a stock bike that doesn't need the extra octane it actually hurts performance. You really need to build the bike for performance to take advantage of the e-85.
That bike with the full length exhaust would be a dream to tour on. I tried the shorty and had to wear earplugs, not hearing much or keep a ringing headache after a short time.
All that ethanol might be bad for the carbon build up on the piston that was my experience on my 124 ss i used comp cam hp and torque monster i got 172 hp and 185 torque
Down here in Brazil we only have E27 fuel. It’s 27 percent of ethanol on the gasoline and the Harleys are shipped with the same stock tune used in the US. It makes the engine run too lean and we can’t tune it without loosing our factory warranty. What a mess from Harley Davidson.
Did I miss where the timing changes were addressed? How much more advanced did you go with the ignition timing? That's the real way to take advantage of the motor octane of e85.
How are you still running a stock drive train? I have a stage 1 set up. And toasted my compensator. I'm no where near your herseper, in a Goldzilla. Great video again, I'll stick with pump 92 octane. Have you experimented with nonethanol?
My local gas station has 100 octane at the pump, unleaded...vance n hines fp3 fuel pack/stage 1 96inch dyna, is this helping or hurting my bike?? I think I feel a little better response, but ???
Hey, I'm in NYC and need to get my bike tuned. But I can't seem to find great reviews or good info on tuners in the tri-state area. How do you find the best tuners? Or if you happen to know anyone in a few hours of NYC, would love that info too.
Hey what would you guys recommend for a - 107 m8 road glide and I’m putting in a 124 power pack S&S kit What do you recommend for a Intake and throttle body ? Do u suggest 64 mm ? I think I’m going to do a recluse clutch but wasn’t sure about the rest
If you are tuning with a flex sensor are you adjusting the bias so you can run either pump or 85 or even a percentage mixture that we have been doing with cars for the last 15 years. its not new technology and been around for a while. please advise.
***A HUGE word of caution using pump e85 without a flex fuel sensor!*** not all pump e85 are created equal. Main problem is with compression and water in the fuel. The water content is why flex fuel cars have stainless components.
Should try doing a flex fuel sensor if your software allows mapping based on the sensor. E.g. the sensor will read the % of ethanol and the tune will be scaled in accordance with that percentage. This way, you don't need to switch maps.

@@Ensaumneak Well it sounded like a good idea, till you put the facts of truth and knowledge and ruined a perfectly good "SCIENCE EXPERIMENT!".
Played that big fuel game with a big block GTO back in the day. The problem is keeping the gas and JPF mixed.
Trying it on my scooter soon...
Great Job Chris.. another great video, hang on Block!!!! Woohooooooo
Official Mac runs the e85 and was saying that he changes the fuel filter more often!
F#(%ing LOVE you fellas for this! Doing the "I wonder what would happen if..." for us and for science! Killer content!
Yall are a huge inspiration for me and my son he is 13 and we went and got him a sportster to build for when he is 16
I look forward to seeing it when he’s done!
@sickwideglide I wish I could upload are progress so far ill send them in a message on Instagram
Thanks 4 the info. I've been curious about e85 in Harleys. Thanks again.

Alot of timing is the key to making big power with e85. Chris needs to test the e85 to make sure its true e85.
Some small towns in northeastern Colorado only have E85 at times I have no choice but to put it in my 103 ,same with Nebraska.
Here in South Dakota E85 is almost offered at every gas station because we promote it for the farmers. We have 16 ethanol plants in SD. So, if you need E85 we have plenty 😁
Not west river plus run 100 octane real gas see what makes more power

up in Chicago E-85 is almost 50cents cheaper than 87 octane, and its quite abundant

I wonder how a Rev Max engine would run E85 🤔
Good stuff gents!! Appreciate y'all!!
Do it on a Sportster 1200, plz. That would be sick. I wanted to do it to mine but I'm too terrified I'll kill my only bike
Hell yeah love that y’all are starting to make your own products! You should call them the block headers
In the name of science! For the community!

interesting the different grades of fuel. our highest premium unleaded here in oz is 98oct this is what they recommend in our bikes here
I run from E85 cause of its low energy properties. It takes more E85 to make the power of 93 octane. But to explore is what makes things better.
1. Awesome tests in the name of science!
2. You did it on that expensive bike (Goldzilla) 😂🍻🤘🏼
Yall need to make a full length for a twin cam!! I would buy it immediately

98 octane in Aus is the same as 91 octane in the US. The formula used to calculator the isomers is done differently in different regions.

Yeah let’s F around and find out!
That looks fun to ride on E82 , now you guys should try nitro methane
Can you run X-85 next please it’s 15% 110 octane with 85% ethanol
Great video, loving the content. Very informative.

Awesome as always it seems

I need that exhaust ASAP
Was hoping thundermax would come out with a way to monitor ethanol content and tune for it on the fly
All that ethanol might be bad for the carbon build up on the piston that was my experience on my 124 ss i used comp cam hp and torque monster i got 172 hp and 185 torque
Just hard to find it. Good for racing. It does burn dirty, change your fuel filter every 3000 miles.
Soon we'll be on our way to Florida 😊
I like science more and more every episode!!!

Hehe that's some nice gains! Goldzilla rips.
Not the yee! On the bags 😂
Awesome man it sounds sweet
great video how do you guys drain the old fuel out of a m8
fuel injection i have tired with no success didn't want to turn
the tank up side down ?
Did I miss where the timing changes were addressed? How much more advanced did you go with the ignition timing? That's the real way to take advantage of the motor octane of e85.
I'd like to see the fu sportster on 85
I'm gonna wait to buy an exhaust for my 21 FXST until you guys re-launch. Polished or chromed pretty please 🙏 😂
When’s the gold Trask coming? Let me get some short block head ends for my Aprilia with the left and right block.
My bike makes less powa and I’ve broken a comp and blew the trans 😅
I volunteer to let yall do it to my sportster, lol.
Chris, totally unrelated question 😮
I want a Lowrider ST. Should I buy now or wait until HD puts out the new color for 2024?!??
Hey, I'm in NYC and need to get my bike tuned. But I can't seem to find great reviews or good info on tuners in the tri-state area. How do you find the best tuners? Or if you happen to know anyone in a few hours of NYC, would love that info too.
So, love your bike for sure. How about a NASTY lightweight. XR750 ish style big motor Sporty with big brakes, good suspension and chain final?
Not knowing. But you guys are just now getting e85? Up Here in MN we've had for 10-15 years.....
Hey what would you guys recommend for a - 107 m8 road glide and I’m putting in a 124 power pack S&S kit
What do you recommend for a
Intake and throttle body ?
Do u suggest 64 mm ?
I think I’m going to do a recluse clutch but wasn’t sure about the rest
Man really wanting to put a cam in my 23 street glide special just don’t know how big to go with it
Could not see the numbers on my phone what are they.😢
Also curious you talk about injected models, what would be the story to run e85 in an 88 cube carburettor model?
Fuck yeah! Horsepower science!! Love it!
If you are tuning with a flex sensor are you adjusting the bias so you can run either pump or 85 or even a percentage mixture that we have been doing with cars for the last 15 years. its not new technology and been around for a while. please advise.
Should try the RBW skull. Heard a lot of good things about them
badass looks like its fun to ride now
The FU Sportster over in the corner saying, "gimme some of dat corn juice!"
You mentioned you used recluse clutch plates in Goldzilla, what exactly did you do to the clutch? Plates, basket, springs etc?
