  • Sung by Isla Cameron:
As I was a-walking one morning in May
I spied a young couple a-making of hay.
Oh, one was a fair maid and her beauty shone clear
and the other was a soldier, a bold grenadier.
Good morning, good morning, good morning said he
Oh, where are you going my pretty lady?
I am going a-walking by the clear crystal stream
to see cool waters glide and hear nightingales sing.
Oh soldier, oh soldier, will you marry me?
Oh no, my sweet lady that never can be.
For I've got a wife at home in my own country,
Two wives and the army's too many for me.
One morning, one morning, one morning in May
I spied a young couple a-making of hay.
Oh, one was a fair maid and her beauty shone clear
and the other was a soldier, a bold grenadier.

Note: I edited out 10 seconds of water pouring from the gutter and onto Fanny's grave at 1:19. In the context of the film those 10 seconds are a poignant interlude, but for this clip I wanted to keep the emphasis on the song itself.

This is the most perfect adaptation from a novel to film ever made..

This is such a powerful scene that aches with meaning. The images of Troy failing to plant bulbs in the rain on his dead lovers grave contrast woefully with the innocent lyrics of loving possibilities, hay making, a may morning, a clear stream and nightinggales singing.

I’d give anything too step back in time and live in this village and the simple pleasures, I’m a realist and know it was dam hard work , but I’m so fed up with the present world we live in , does anyone else relate too this ?

Yes. I’d rather that sort of hard work than the unproductive modern slog that is choking us to a slow death.

Yes, same here. We seem to be unrooted, individualism has gone way too far.

This is a great retelling of Hardy's classic and there are many memorable scenes but this has always been one that stuck in my mind. Thankyou for posting it 😢

The uncredited star in this film is Dorset. Gods own Country. Nicolas Roegs cinematography does it justice.

I totally agree with you. The film itself is an homage to the beauty of the Dorset countryside. The music is a love poem to it. I don't come from Dorset, but over the years I've grown to love it more and more. I know other counties are as beautiful but they haven't that aura. If you knocked me out and dropped me blindfolded in Dorset, I would know where I was from the shape of the hills and the depths of the lanes. I'm constantly homesick for it and it's not my home! 😂

Actually I realise now that the love dynamic was between the soldier & his flushie & not between him & basheeeba

Yes he obviously did love her, but only realised it when it was far too late and that's why it's so poignantly beautiful.
