  • Are you often confused at how some divers configure their regulators? Do you feel a little too shy to ask them? Well in this video I aim to show you how and why their kit is different and often better than what you were taught!
Using a pair of APEKS XTX DST and XTX40 regulatorsI'll show you the simplest configuration of the long hose setup on a set of twin 12ltr cylinders.
The Hogarthian cave diving configuration is the epitome of the minimalist philosophy. This basic system, also known as the Hogarthian system, is the genesis of all DIR diving and while its roots lie clearly within American cave diving during the 1980’sand early 90’s it’s progressive nature remains intact and primarily unchanged even today. The Hogarthian system was originally developed by veteran cave divers William Hogarth Main, Bill Gavin, Sheck Exley, and many others within the Florida cave diving community during the 1980’s.
At that time there was considerable interest in lowering the mortality rate in, a sport that was considered the worlds most dangerous, cave diving! And so this simple but strict, cohesive, bare bones, minimalist type configuration began to develop around a very basic concept eliminate the unnecessary while configuring the necessary in the most streamlined manner possible. What’s truly amazing is how well this very basic concept has stood the test of time. Even today with the more recent and sudden popularity of technical diving and constant equipment and technological advances, the Hogarthian configuration true to form, continues to adapt remarkably well.
For this configuration you will need:
    2 x first stages (DIN)
    1 x second stages
    1 x 210cm (7') main regulator hose
    1 x 0.64m (24") backup regulator hose
    Length of bungee or necklace
    2 x LP inflator hoses
1 x HP hose and SPG
    🔴 Links to this episode:
Hose lengths are suggested at 7' / 2.1m main regulator hose and 24" / 0.64m backup regulator hose

A vid on how to service and clean a DST 1st stage would be educational for me.

It would be for us all mate but unfortunately it’s a course delivered by Apeks so although I’m qualified to do the servicing I’m not allowed to show you and the equipment and tools required are so expensive and specialised it’s pointless.

Hi Andy, I know this is an older video now but do you have any advice for the routing of the long hose if you don't have a light battery?

Stuff It in the waist belt or buy the apeks hose retainer that’ll be more secure mate

Thanks Andy. I have a question about how you would configure/wrap the long hose if you were carrying multiple stage cylinders (left and right)? I currently do the underarm-around-the-neck wrap you do in this video but was thinking it would get trapped on the waist if carrying a stage on the right.

It’s not something I’ve done (carrying on the right) but thinking about it, I’d stuff the hose in my belt which would allow it to be pulled though to deploy it, rather than snagged around the torch battery. Hope that helps, happy for someone who has done it to offer a difference of opinion. Thanks for watching mate
