- Some features are well documented, but others are so obscure that tons of fans may have missed out of them. Today we look through every generation to find the strangest ones.

Hope everyone is having a good one! What are some other obscure features that you know of?
One of my favorites is how in gen 2 the radio effects encounter rates depending on what channel you're listening to. It may be complete coincidence but I remember the lullaby channel had a repel effect and the pokemon talk channel making it easier to catch rare pokemon like stantler and yanma.
What about The e reader cards in gen 3
this isnt necessarily a "feature" but in gen 4 games if you have an action replay and walkthrough walls cheat, on escort encounters (like with trainers like buck, riley, cheryl, etc) if you leave the area without going through the proper checkpoint, the game basically thinks youre still walking with them, and you will be stuck with them, meaning you will permanently in double wild battles with them, as well as they will be your partner if you end up in a trainer double battle. if you save in this state and play without AR, you will basically be stuck wherever youre at because youre not allowed to fly or surf on escort encounters. but you will be fully healed every battle, and you can get double the experience from double wild battles.
you can fix it by just going back to the area and either leaving the right way again or complete the dungeon.
The QR codes and Island Scan from Gen 7 come to mind.
the bike racks in diamond and pearl, if you speak to them while on a bike, it will ask you if you want to get off your bike
Regarding “easy mode” in BW2, my personal theory is that easy mode was really meant for Pokédex completion play, and hard mode was for people who like battling.
Just like Black City/White Forest - one for battles, one for catching Pokemon.
This! Resetting for Pokedex completion is irritating without the difficulty drop. Pokemon isn't hard, but I tend to blaze through the game when all I want is the opposite game's legendaries/exclusives, making it artificially hard at normal difficulty.
@@JazzyWaffles If you want “easy mode” on other generations to complete the Pokédex, here’s my method. Pokémon you catch will always be loyal to you regardless of gym badges. It is based on trainer ID. Given that, I catch some Pokémon in the second game and trade them to my first game. Then, I juice them up quickly using power leveling and TMs from the first game. Trade back to game 2 and you now have high level loyal Pokémon to steamroll the story. While doing this trading, you can also transfer over useful items early. Finally, you should do this with a Pokémon that can learn false swipe to make catching easier. Without false swipe, you’ll either need to relay on status change moves or potentially staggering your “power level” Pokémon levels so you have one ready for every 10 levels (e.g if you try to catch a level 30 with a level 50 without false swipe or stat change moves, you’ll likely knock it out).
but... why did you have to beat the game to get it...

Fun fact about the grass-cutting: in Pokemon Emerald, the special event island that had Mew involved essentially playing hide and seek with it in the very tall grass that comes up to your head. If you were to try and cutting the grass Mew would disappear and stop playing with you.

@@mikehurt3290 it’s very common for people who started in gen 4 I didn’t find out till I accidentally did it on a copy of gold I got a few years after I started
I spent hours cutting random patches of grass, it was oddly satisfying
i cut random grass in gold/silver in hoping to found scret passage to legendary pokemon 😂😂😂
then in gen 4 and onward they took it out

Some troll listed a Lunala on GTS for a Salemence under level 10, so I got one. He's probably raging to this day lmao

This could have been intentional - Lunala is a guaranteed encounter and pretty easy to stockpile if you do repeat playthroughs. The underlevelled Salamence is actually a rarity and difficult to find. I don't think they were trolling; I think they were just collecting

Oddly, the hard mode of BW2 becomes easier than the base difficulty after a certain point due to more exp being available meaning your Pokemon get stronger quicker.
Something similar happened in Bloodstained, though I think it was patched out.
Hard mode made the enemies tougher, but it also put more difficult enemies with better drops earlier, including an enemy that dropped the best Familiar in the game which spawned at a fast rate and gave a ton of exp for the area. You could grind to a high-level very quickly, get a good piece of armor, and get an OP Familiar at full-power before the first boss.
It made the whole game stupidly easy.
It balances out well in the end because the challenge mode elite four is such a big difficulty spike compared to the base game.
I like gen 7's obscure island scan feature, you could use QR codes to get points towards encountering wild Pokemon not in the regional dex (I even used it to get Horsea in a Dragon type run of Ultra Moon)
And you can get Deino in Sun and Moon with this method
I used it so that I could get Squirtle on my team in Ultra Moon
8:01 when Platinum came out I vividly remember one of the paper inserts inside the game case was teasing the new Rotom forms and teaching you how to unlock Mystery Gift

Plus the fact that having to unlock mystery gift didn’t start with gen 4, you had to do the same in gen 3 and he casually overlooked it

When was that? And I’m 50% sure that’s impossible since only a few pokemon in those games could be shiny, but I don’t remember pikachu being one

You didn't pick the E-reader cards for gen 3? That's definitely the most weird of the features.
The cellphone adapter feature for Crystal Version never released outside of Japan due to the fact that you had to pay to use the feature. It was 10 yen per 30 seconds, plus whatever your carrier charges. Having a game targeted towards game charge that much would simply not fly in 1999.
Now most devs would kill to do that sort of thing, and in many cases do that as best they can
I really like marks. Shiny hunting never interested me since it was a large time commitment for Pokemon a bunch of other people go for. With marks, not many people know about them so I can find one and feel unique and special. Plus I can give them nicknames that fit with their mark. I haven't found any but I'm having a lot of fun hunting

I just wish it was easier to know when that wild Pokemon has a mark before catching it. Still surprising and fun to find once you see it in the box though
This ties into a story of mine. When I was searching for another balltoy for a living dex, the balltoy I found was a marked shiny. Btw I have both shiny and mark charms.
I remember getting a shiny smoochum from the odd egg. I didn’t even know it was shiny until I sent it out 😅
The other weird thing is that there is a part where you need two ds's to get all the flashback scenes in bw2 as well. And the chance to catch all of N's pokemon. You had to have BW in one ds with a complete game and then BW2. One of these scenes was with the protags mother in BW

For "Everyone Happy Wi-Fi Connection", at least in Platinum at launch, there was an insert in the box that told you what to say to the Jubilife guy for the Rotom key.
I don't know if said insert was still included a year after launch, for example, as the Rotom key wasn't up for the game's entire life iirc.

Oh! I had the Japanese version of Crystal (it was the only one available at the store around the time of my birthday and I was so excited that I said no when my mom asked if I'd like it for her to trade it in for the US version) and I never understood that expanded PC. Almost 20 years later and now I know.
I'm surprised you didn't bring the destructible backgrounds in gen 6. Such an odd feature that I didn't even know existed until I replayed XY a year ago and wanted to know how to find lum berries.

Your calculus analogy actually happened to me. Was in AP classes growing up, took Calc as a junior in highschool, skipped trig and pre-calc. Senior year rolled around and I was told I needed to go back and take them even though I had already passed Calc. Life can be pretty stupid at times
I think you forgot a couple of features in Gen 3; assuming they can be considered weird/obscured
1) GBA introduced the e reader, which back in the day were used for mistery gift event items such as the tickets to get lugia and ho-oh; among other things. Back in the day if u get an original copy of ruby/sapphire u also get a card for you to scan it via e reader. As far as I know it replace a trainer's pokemon within the game for u to battle, and also gives you a new berry never seen before.
2) In FR/LG; during the sevii island post game visit, in six island, there is the altering cave. You normally encounter wild zubats, but as the name implies, you can change the wild pokemon encounters through mystery gift events; which could be obtained via Wonder Spots hold by Nintendo. However; it was not known back in the day.

About the square shinies in generation 8. I transferred two shiny Pokemon from Gen 7. My Gardevoir and Lopunny. Lopunny was a normal shiny, while my Gardevoir turned out to be a square shiny. Which was just kinda neat.

I accidentally found out the Cut grass feature when I was 5 playing Yellow, and even back then thought it was interesting that I could reshape the routes to my convenience. Too bad my ADHD brain wouldn't let me sit down and take the time to make my vision a reality.
Lol. My brain literally made me do the opposite for a playthrouhg, only let me go on once I had cleared the grass. Ofc since the grass grew back, it's like mario where you cannot go back so you didn't care if the grass had grown back.
I think the gen 3 grass cutting feature was supposed to be linked to Secret Base construction. Like if you were taking the time to decorate your base you probably didn’t want to have to fight a Zigzagoon every time you went in or out.

During the pokemon emerald mew event if you used cut in the tall grass in which mew is hiding it will disappear.
The weirdest feature of Pokemon sapphire is training a Kyogre for 10 years and still not facing the Elite Four
Well considering most pokes in cerulean cave are well over 50 it's possible to shiny hunt them, specially Chaney and Ditto
I remember that key system in BW2. It was pretty damn cool knowing me and my gf could trade keys and get access to new pokemon and stuff to play with. While it is cool, it did have its drawbacks as you said.
That cut grass one brings back memories I used to go around and cut everything insight.

You can’t transfer to gen 4 from there
4:40 even though this was changed in the west, there's still code in the game that checks the players bag for an Egg Ticket. If you have one in your bag (through cheating or glitches) the game will remove 1 ticket from your bag upon receiving the Odd Egg

I think the real reason cutting grass was removed is because it was harder to dynamically change the maps when they became 3D models in Gen 4.

Strange feature in hgss, an npc in the violet city pokemon center will give you three pokemon eggs if you find the random code to get them from your trainer id. I'm not sure how people were supposed to find these codes without the internet but I just randomly found the eggs like a couple of years ago.

I love that it's technically legal to have a Lugia with Deoxys's signature move Psycho Boost in Gen 8 despite the fact that Deoxys itself isn't available. Assuming you don't go out of your way to remove it, every Lugia like this will have a rare ribbon unique to Pokemon from Colosseum and XD.
I always found the difficulty modes in B2W2 to kinda be a bit redundant since they were unlocked post-game and the whole transfer key mechanic didn’t help.
And maybe because I have no friends….
The crystal trade service charged for each of the trades and battles. That would so not go over well now.
the chosen one mark i remember something like that in mandtv transfering a pokemon from gen 1,2,3 (i dont remember excatly) to gen 8 and it was a purified tyranitar with that mark
Honestly, I also hope the dual slot Pokémon are implemented into BDSP's Pokedex too.
We already know Elekid and Magby will since the Platinum dex is being used, but I really hope they give us Ursaring too since I want to use Paul's best possible team in one of the two games.

OMG, I remembered the Global Trade System in Japanese Crystal version. So nostalgic. I also didn’t know the cut HM to mow grass until Gen2. 😂
I used to use the cut feature back in the day when my Pokémon's health were so low. I didn't like spending money on anything in the Poké Mart.
I knew about the mobile feature in Crystal and how it related to getting the GS Ball and Celebii but not much more about it.

Actually you can obtain level one sudo legendarys and pretty much any Pokémon at level 1. This can be done by catching minimum cp Pokémon in Pokémon go and then transferring them to Pokémon home. Evolving a Pokémon doesn’t raise the level so you can evolve all of the babies into level 1 monsters.
Pokémon Go mons can be moved to console games? Neat.
Gen 3 is the generation I played the most and is my favorite and I had no idea cut can be used like that

Square shiny is also more rare in Max. Raids & Dynamax Adventures.
Wild encounters are the only encounters where this ratio is "inverted".

I was today years old when I found out about being able to cut the tall grass in gen 2. I was literally playing silver and immediately tried it out. Guess I’ll see if I ever use it again after this.
I may be misremembering, but I think in get 3, cut let you trim tall grass and then cut the less tall but still kinda tall grass
Wrong pokemon go lets you catch level 1 pokemon and don't need exp to evolve. So you can have any pseudo legendary up to gen 6 at level 1

I found a Umbreon once while Eevee hunting n Pokemon Sun when I had beaten the game and had nothing better to do. I was quite bummed out when I had to defeat the Eevee that had called for the Umbreon first and I caught the Umbreon

Does the Japanese eshop version of Crystal on 3ds still have the PCC building in Goldenrod or no?
Yes, the PCC still exists in the Virtual Console version on 3DS, however, they didn’t update the wi-fi features, so it’s completely unusable, even in the Japanese version.

With Platinum I am curious if you put a copy of Pokémon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire in the GBA slot if there are any specific Pokémon encounters or not; since Ruby and Sapphire have their own encounters it'd be cool if the spinoff named after them had one too.
If I had known about this feature as a kid I would've tried it out as I always had a GBA cartridge inserted in my ds lite; so I would've definitely been able to at least get the Gengar in the Old Chateu if nothing else but I never even thought about that feature as a possibility.
But my sibling has my Platinum and we don't have a ds anymore so we can't try this for ourselves right now unfortunately.

Gen 8 does not have Chain Fishing.
The only increase is Brilliant spawns which don't increase shiny odds just IV ODDS
well if the gts was only availible for the japanese crystal then its not exactly the GLOBAL trade system
I thought that the egg was stuck to be a Togepi cuz all the times that played through the games I always got a Togepi
