20:25 About the colours, in Japan there is a design theroy known as 《実花美学》, which means the beauty knowledge of solid flower, that involves uses of colourful visual elements, created by Mika Ninagawa (蜷川 実花), a Japanese photographer and director, known for her brightly coloured photographs of flowers, goldfish, and landscapes; the team who made this game could be under influence of her style I guess.
Larry Bundy Jr It was going to be on the Gems Collection for the PS2 and GameCube, but I guess that they couldn't emulate the 32X correctly. To be fair to Sega, Mega Drive and Mega CD emulation was considerably easier than the 32X for whatever reason.
Aleisis probably has to do with the fact the sega cd was still technically 16 bit so half of the code was prolly just pulled from the genesis emulator. 32X is a bit of weird beast.
Actually Sega's stance is that Knuckles Chaotix has been unpersoned. The Chaotix from Sonic Heroes and Mighty from Sonic Jam are the official first appearances of the characters according to Sega. In fact outside of the Classic genesis games and Sonic CD the only 16 bit era game that Sega hasn't unpersoned is SegaSonic and that's mostly due to Whitehead studios.
The Dizzy Sprites might have actually been used for an unused death animation, in Sonic Crackers there are a set of spikes on the roof and if you jump into them in the right way you will trigger the dizzy animation and since you cannot collect any rings in Sonic Crackers its pretty safe to say that they are death animations

Did anyone else realize that the bad and good endings are basically backwards? The good ending usually goes into some amount of detail, while the bad ending is usually "here're the collectible macguffins, here's your enemy with them, try again and get them back", whereas here, the _bad_ ending goes into (some implicit) detail and the _good_ ending is just the collectibles and cameos from characters.

I might've mentiones this once, but Amy & Charmy both first appeared in a Sonic manga from the early 90s that predated CD and Chaotix. With Vector being scrapped from Sonic 1, the only original character to my knowledge was Espio. And now that you've mentioned the fat gay pregnant dog, I can't unsee the resemblence.
I'm convinced the devs intended for this game to be played coop, its so much more fun than single player. You get to just slingshot each other all over the map at really high speeds. chaotic but fun gameplay.

I really like the character art in this game, wouldn't be against them returning in mania 2. Love how Vector looks like a wheel in his spin animation, and Espio's spin is also very nice looking.
Say I just came to the realization after watching the video that well since there is no life machanic so maybe those dizzy/knocked out sprites were originally going to be what happens when you die, you just get knocked out for a short period of time, especially since the character seems to respawn after dying in the game. I honestly wish they would of kept those in the finished product cause it would have been a nice touch and would make more sense than just suddenly jumping back in after disappearing and it would also be different than most other games at the time.

Truffles It's because of all the games on the 32x, it's one of the very few that marries the abilities of the Genesis, and 32x optimally, and in the most successful way. Doing so also cut down on slowdown, which an unfortunate amount of 32x games suffer from due to the fact that the 32x processes everything in software mode. No dedicated hardware such as VDPs... :(
I'm going to explain why I love this game in as few words as possible: -It is the only post trilogy game with superior tech to the Genesis/Mega Drive that allows you to get a glimpse as to what Sonic could have looked like on the Saturn before Mania existed. The art and sprites are beautiful and big. The color coordination is especially good. Very bright and purposefully exploding with color with black accents. And the levels have a lot of weight and scope to them. You can see the dome over the green house in Botanical Garden, which inspired Press Garden in Sonic Mania, for example. And there are little cutscenes before the bosses that briefly allow you to see the stage from a different perspective. I had a hoot playing it with my brother when we bought it at a flea market and hooked it all up once the system was already old and forgotten. It was great.
I remember reading a video game history book called High Score by Rusel DeMaria back in the early 2000s. Throughout the book, different consoles are profiled and there is usually a galley of screenshots from games with their respective titles. I distinctly remember that there was a screen shot from "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" and it stuck out to me because I had never heard of it before. I wasn't a Sega kid, but every Sega kid I asked about it had never heard about it. Confused the fuck out of me until I finally saw the Sonic Crackers prototype that was the source of the screenshot.

Marina Madness could have had water that raised and lowered when you hit the buttons on the boats, and air bubbles. I think the battle against Metal Sonic Kai was originally gonna be fought by Super Sonic, and could only be accessed if you got all the Chaos Rings. The way the Metal Sonic Kai boss is done, it could have worked well. This would also mean that you would likely only fight Metal Sonic Kai if you got the Chaos Rings. If you beat Metal Sonic's main battle without the Chaos Rings, it would make more sense to not get to fight Metal Sonic Kai without them, but since he still becomes Metal Sonic Kai, and because you are powerless to stop him, you get to witness the bad ending. If you look at the fact that the Heavy and Bomb statues use orangish gold and blue palettes, and there is two of them... I think it was originally planned if you beat the game with all the Chaos Rings, you would "rescue" Sonic and Tails (hence why they don't appear in the game), and if you chose to start a file over, you could now pick them at the beginning of each game, and one of the Heavy and Bomb statues would be replaced with Sonic and Tails statues. Also, I think those "drunk" sprites are meant to be death/KO animations. The weird "blackout" when you get knocked out goes perfect with them.
So I got this 32x ad-on and this game just as it was being phased out...and the 32x wasn’t even compatible with my (earlier) version of the genesis. To this day this still brings me ire, I was so pissed I didn’t even wait for the adapter piece sent to me in the mail, I mean obviously they knew the thing wasn’t going to work with the original version of the system, WHY wasn’t the adapter piece INCLUDED WITH THE EXPENSIVE ADD ON?!!!!! So...long story short, I ended up not playing this game until 15 years later as a rom on the computer...which made me thank god I returned the 32x way back when.
I rented it from blockbuster and it wasn't compatible with mines with and inhad the 2nd version plus my sega CD attached. That was in 95vand never plas yes the game
The game is beautiful and the bgm is catchy af. I remember as a kid being obsessed with this game from everything I saw online about it. When I finally figured out what emulators were and played it... I was soooo fucking disappointed by the gameplay. But you're right, the special stages are fun. And like I said the art style and music is top-notch. Feels kinda lofi or something.
It's actually much more fun with two players. The springing around everywhere and going ridiculously fast feels silly and annoying when it's just you lugging around your dead weight CPU partner, but funny and anarchic when it's two people trying to work together.

I loved this game for its music (it's too damn good), stage design (not in term of platforms location but more so on their appearance and color palette), it's immersiveness (the weather/ambient in each zone/attraction changes depending on the time you've been playing the game, which is too fucking cool, hell, even the "warp" zone has different remixes for each time, I wish they had done the same thing for the stages, so to make them more varied musically), the special stages are also great (dare I say they are on my top 3 best Sonic Special Stages). What else?? I think that is all. This game deserves the remake treatment, it has SOOO much wasted potential.
Man, Chaotix is so fun once you get used to the ring mechanic and level design. It's not a hard game, but it's fun as hell to try to blast through the levels as quickly as possible, plus the random stage order mixed with the day/night system gives the game a new flavor on each playthrough. The special stages are also some of my favorites in the entire series, and the music/aesthetics are fucking great. I can understand why people wouldn't like this game, though. The ring mechanic can be annoying at times, and playing through the game casually is a fucking cakewalk.
I do really like the special stages, day/night system, and music, but I don't really enjoy blasting through the levels because they're so boring to me. Just too big and barren with nothing really challenging in your way, not to mention I tend to get lost a lot which is extremely tedious. I do bet that if you really enjoyed this game and bothered to really learn the mechanics it could be kind of fun. If you play it enough to sort of memorize the general location of the exits to every level, as well as really get a good grasp on the rubber band mechanic, it might be fun to go through the levels as fast as you can without having to worry about getting lost. It seems like it might be a fun game to speedrun actually. Oh actually it turns out it's not even fun to speedrun because the optimal way to consistently clear levels at top speed is to just fly through them as Charmy, which requires absolutely no mastery over the main mechanic of the game at all. Oh well.
I do feel somewhat obligated to use Mighty when playing the game, since those bastards at SEGA apparently decided he doesn't exist anymore. So I gotta at least respect him enough to use him in the games he's in.
Cybershell it's a really great multiplayer experience. the ring mechanic makes everything so fun and chaotic that it becomes worthwhile imo it's kinda like mario 3d world, mediocre single player, but great multiplayer
It has some of the best music in any sonic game, and as one of the 5 people who owned it back in the 90s, it really felt like owning something unique cuz no one else knew about it
It's only understandable that Chaotix is not a perfect game - Sonic Team always had project completing issues since Sonic 2. But Knuckles Chaotix was fundamentally based as a CO-OP GAME in order to fix the traditional co-op between Tails & Sonic in past games, since the co-op was really shitty and couldn't allow the second player to participate enough with the main player. That's why Sonic Crackers began, and then ended as Chaotix. (An yes, the journey of co-op experimental still continued in Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic 4.2) The main flaws of this game that i can actually agree are the Robots and the Endings. The enemies rarely are a threat and most of them are aerial since the game has so much vertical space, and you have almost no time to react to them when you are going too fast. The endings are also not that good, but the bad ending just starts without explanation, unless you've read the manual about your main objective of collecting the Chaos Rings. The Levels are just ok, but not "OMG". They are much maze-based stages with some gimmicks, but if they were designed like traditional Sonic Levels they would be too short and easy to beat, since Chaotix characters are basically brokenly OP (Vector is Sonic + Knuckles for god sake). And for the Difficulty system that keeps growing and the Day/Night System, THAT's why each zone has 5 FUCKING ACTS. But i also agree that should have been a variety of 7 Zones. Knuckles' Chaotix is not actually a shitty game, is just "so-so". Just a few people actually played this game, and many others "just heard about it" even nowdays. I find it more enjoyable than Sonic 1 and 2, but not good enough as Sonic CD or Sonic 3&K. But heck yeah, it has the best Special Stage ever.
Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix are actually my favorite Sonic side scrollers. They're also the only ones I ever bothered actually getting the good ending in because their special stages are actually fun rather than frustrating. The Sonic CD one should've started you with more time though. Also I love the rubber band mechanic. It's so much fun to play around with. I only wish they'd found more fun things to do with it.

You nailed it on the head at the 22:18 mark - the team that made Sonic CD immediately went on to make Knuckles' Chaotix. It was the members of Sonic Team who remained in Japan. (Meanwhile, the members of Sonic Team who moved to the U.S. worked with the Americans at Sega Technical Institute to make Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles - that's why those games feel different.)

A few people realize that. I love tomb raider III, however I wouldn't call it "good", espesually on the PSX. Not to mention I certainly wouldn't even spend five dollars to buy it. Many, many people love to use emotional attachment or "enjoyment" as an excuse to call their game "good", despite it likely being ok, very ok or mediocre, as that game they protect so fondly is their -only reason to live- favorite game.
I'll be honest… Knuckles' Chaotix is _still_ my favorite Sonic game… despite having not played it in well over a decade (damned Genesis and 32X stopped working ages ago). I just had so much fun with the rubber band mechanic, running along walls and ceilings with Espio, the power ups (glad to hear they're bringing back the Combine Ring), LOVED the music ("Door Into Summer" is Heaven), the boss fights with their own cutscenes prefacing them… …honestly the only thing I never liked was this "sound room" boss in one of the attractions that would fly around almost out of reach; only time I ever liked playing as Charmy since he could easily fly up and smash through it (and apparently playing as him with Heavy was supposed to be an "easier" means of blasting through badniks). I really hope this game gets a re-release someday (unless it already has?), otherwise I suppose I'd have to get a 32X Rom of some sort… or try and find my actual 32X and Genesis and try and repair them; either way this game made purchasing the 32X worth it (though the system did introduce me to _DOOM,_ so there's that).
Did you clean the game contacts? 32x hardware is finicky but _so_ frequently, a cart based system's problem is just that the contacts oxidixed. Clean them with Rubbing Alcohol on a Q TIp and most of the time, it's OK. I still have a few carts that don't play after cleaning but they're uncommon.

In Sonic Heroes, there's boss battles against other teams. There's also Team Chaotix in there, and if You play as Team Sonic, which includes Knuckles, you don't get to fight Team Chaotix because this is Knuckles' old crew and killing them would be kind of weird for Knuckles. So I feel like this pretty much confirms it.
Calm down dude, you don't kill the other team, you just kick their asses and move on to the next stage. Unless you think that amy wants to date sonic so bad that she murders him from rejecting her too much. But besides that, it was probably due to limitations of the game itself, since every team only fights two other teams. And tbh, it would've been kinda cool to face the chaotix as team sonic just to see their interactions.
Despite all its flaws, Knuckles Chaotix is an amazing and hilarious multiplayer game. It's wacky and... well, chaotic. It may not be the best Sonic game, or even the best 32x game, but it's always good for a laugh with friends.

The day / night cycle should have been used to denote height as a pallet change and just used the random enemy placement with the random stage change. Also, the random stage change should have been an option, like extra lives or difficulty should have been.

Did anyone else realize that the bad and good endings are basically backwards? The good ending usually goes into some amount of detail, while the bad ending is usually "here're the collectible macguffins, here's your enemy with them, try again and get them back", whereas here, the _bad_ ending goes into (some implicit) detail and the _good_ ending is just the collectibles and cameos from characters.

I might've mentiones this once, but Amy & Charmy both first appeared in a Sonic manga from the early 90s that predated CD and Chaotix. With Vector being scrapped from Sonic 1, the only original character to my knowledge was Espio.

Say I just came to the realization after watching the video that well since there is no life machanic so maybe those dizzy/knocked out sprites were originally going to be what happens when you die, you just get knocked out for a short period of time, especially since the character seems to respawn after dying in the game. I honestly wish they would of kept those in the finished product cause it would have been a nice touch and would make more sense than just suddenly jumping back in after disappearing and it would also be different than most other games at the time.

Truffles It's because of all the games on the 32x, it's one of the very few that marries the abilities of the Genesis, and 32x optimally, and in the most successful way. Doing so also cut down on slowdown, which an unfortunate amount of 32x games suffer from due to the fact that the 32x processes everything in software mode. No dedicated hardware such as VDPs... :(

I'm going to explain why I love this game in as few words as possible:
-It is the only post trilogy game with superior tech to the Genesis/Mega Drive that allows you to get a glimpse as to what Sonic could have looked like on the Saturn before Mania existed. The art and sprites are beautiful and big. The color coordination is especially good. Very bright and purposefully exploding with color with black accents. And the levels have a lot of weight and scope to them. You can see the dome over the green house in Botanical Garden, which inspired Press Garden in Sonic Mania, for example. And there are little cutscenes before the bosses that briefly allow you to see the stage from a different perspective.
I had a hoot playing it with my brother when we bought it at a flea market and hooked it all up once the system was already old and forgotten. It was great.

I think the battle against Metal Sonic Kai was originally gonna be fought by Super Sonic, and could only be accessed if you got all the Chaos Rings. The way the Metal Sonic Kai boss is done, it could have worked well. This would also mean that you would likely only fight Metal Sonic Kai if you got the Chaos Rings. If you beat Metal Sonic's main battle without the Chaos Rings, it would make more sense to not get to fight Metal Sonic Kai without them, but since he still becomes Metal Sonic Kai, and because you are powerless to stop him, you get to witness the bad ending.
If you look at the fact that the Heavy and Bomb statues use orangish gold and blue palettes, and there is two of them...
I think it was originally planned if you beat the game with all the Chaos Rings, you would "rescue" Sonic and Tails (hence why they don't appear in the game), and if you chose to start a file over, you could now pick them at the beginning of each game, and one of the Heavy and Bomb statues would be replaced with Sonic and Tails statues.
Also, I think those "drunk" sprites are meant to be death/KO animations. The weird "blackout" when you get knocked out goes perfect with them.

It sounds very generic to say, but I am enjoying these videos you have been putting out recently.
So I got this 32x ad-on and this game just as it was being phased out...and the 32x wasn’t even compatible with my (earlier) version of the genesis. To this day this still brings me ire, I was so pissed I didn’t even wait for the adapter piece sent to me in the mail, I mean obviously they knew the thing wasn’t going to work with the original version of the system, WHY wasn’t the adapter piece INCLUDED WITH THE EXPENSIVE ADD ON?!!!!!
So...long story short, I ended up not playing this game until 15 years later as a rom on the computer...which made me thank god I returned the 32x way back when.
I rented it from blockbuster and it wasn't compatible with mines with and inhad the 2nd version plus my sega CD attached. That was in 95vand never plas yes the game

The game is beautiful and the bgm is catchy af. I remember as a kid being obsessed with this game from everything I saw online about it. When I finally figured out what emulators were and played it... I was soooo fucking disappointed by the gameplay. But you're right, the special stages are fun. And like I said the art style and music is top-notch. Feels kinda lofi or something.
It's actually much more fun with two players. The springing around everywhere and going ridiculously fast feels silly and annoying when it's just you lugging around your dead weight CPU partner, but funny and anarchic when it's two people trying to work together.

I loved this game for its music (it's too damn good), stage design (not in term of platforms location but more so on their appearance and color palette), it's immersiveness (the weather/ambient in each zone/attraction changes depending on the time you've been playing the game, which is too fucking cool, hell, even the "warp" zone has different remixes for each time, I wish they had done the same thing for the stages, so to make them more varied musically), the special stages are also great (dare I say they are on my top 3 best Sonic Special Stages). What else?? I think that is all. This game deserves the remake treatment, it has SOOO much wasted potential.
Man, Chaotix is so fun once you get used to the ring mechanic and level design. It's not a hard game, but it's fun as hell to try to blast through the levels as quickly as possible, plus the random stage order mixed with the day/night system gives the game a new flavor on each playthrough. The special stages are also some of my favorites in the entire series, and the music/aesthetics are fucking great. I can understand why people wouldn't like this game, though. The ring mechanic can be annoying at times, and playing through the game casually is a fucking cakewalk.
I do really like the special stages, day/night system, and music, but I don't really enjoy blasting through the levels because they're so boring to me. Just too big and barren with nothing really challenging in your way, not to mention I tend to get lost a lot which is extremely tedious. I do bet that if you really enjoyed this game and bothered to really learn the mechanics it could be kind of fun. If you play it enough to sort of memorize the general location of the exits to every level, as well as really get a good grasp on the rubber band mechanic, it might be fun to go through the levels as fast as you can without having to worry about getting lost. It seems like it might be a fun game to speedrun actually. Oh actually it turns out it's not even fun to speedrun because the optimal way to consistently clear levels at top speed is to just fly through them as Charmy, which requires absolutely no mastery over the main mechanic of the game at all. Oh well.

If you think Knuckles chaotix is a bad game then you havent tried co-op with a shithead fiend playing charmy bee.
It has some of the best music in any sonic game, and as one of the 5 people who owned it back in the 90s, it really felt like owning something unique cuz no one else knew about it
It's only understandable that Chaotix is not a perfect game - Sonic Team always had project completing issues since Sonic 2.
But Knuckles Chaotix was fundamentally based as a CO-OP GAME in order to fix the traditional co-op between Tails & Sonic in past games, since the co-op was really shitty and couldn't allow the second player to participate enough with the main player. That's why Sonic Crackers began, and then ended as Chaotix. (An yes, the journey of co-op experimental still continued in Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic 4.2)
The main flaws of this game that i can actually agree are the Robots and the Endings. The enemies rarely are a threat and most of them are aerial since the game has so much vertical space, and you have almost no time to react to them when you are going too fast. The endings are also not that good, but the bad ending just starts without explanation, unless you've read the manual about your main objective of collecting the Chaos Rings.
The Levels are just ok, but not "OMG". They are much maze-based stages with some gimmicks, but if they were designed like traditional Sonic Levels they would be too short and easy to beat, since Chaotix characters are basically brokenly OP (Vector is Sonic + Knuckles for god sake). And for the Difficulty system that keeps growing and the Day/Night System, THAT's why each zone has 5 FUCKING ACTS. But i also agree that should have been a variety of 7 Zones.
Knuckles' Chaotix is not actually a shitty game, is just "so-so". Just a few people actually played this game, and many others "just heard about it" even nowdays. I find it more enjoyable than Sonic 1 and 2, but not good enough as Sonic CD or Sonic 3&K. But heck yeah, it has the best Special Stage ever.

Sonic CD and Knuckles Chaotix are actually my favorite Sonic side scrollers. They're also the only ones I ever bothered actually getting the good ending in because their special stages are actually fun rather than frustrating. The Sonic CD one should've started you with more time though. Also I love the rubber band mechanic. It's so much fun to play around with. I only wish they'd found more fun things to do with it.

You nailed it on the head at the 22:18 mark - the team that made Sonic CD immediately went on to make Knuckles' Chaotix. It was the members of Sonic Team who remained in Japan. (Meanwhile, the members of Sonic Team who moved to the U.S. worked with the Americans at Sega Technical Institute to make Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles - that's why those games feel different.)

I'll be honest… Knuckles' Chaotix is _still_ my favorite Sonic game… despite having not played it in well over a decade (damned Genesis and 32X stopped working ages ago). I just had so much fun with the rubber band mechanic, running along walls and ceilings with Espio, the power ups (glad to hear they're bringing back the Combine Ring), LOVED the music ("Door Into Summer" is Heaven), the boss fights with their own cutscenes prefacing them…
…honestly the only thing I never liked was this "sound room" boss in one of the attractions that would fly around almost out of reach; only time I ever liked playing as Charmy since he could easily fly up and smash through it (and apparently playing as him with Heavy was supposed to be an "easier" means of blasting through badniks).
I really hope this game gets a re-release someday (unless it already has?), otherwise I suppose I'd have to get a 32X Rom of some sort… or try and find my actual 32X and Genesis and try and repair them; either way this game made purchasing the 32X worth it (though the system did introduce me to _DOOM,_ so there's that).

Did you clean the game contacts? 32x hardware is finicky but _so_ frequently, a cart based system's problem is just that the contacts oxidixed. Clean them with Rubbing Alcohol on a Q TIp and most of the time, it's OK. I still have a few carts that don't play after cleaning but they're uncommon.

In Sonic Heroes, there's boss battles against other teams. There's also Team Chaotix in there, and if You play as Team Sonic, which includes Knuckles, you don't get to fight Team Chaotix because this is Knuckles' old crew and killing them would be kind of weird for Knuckles. So I feel like this pretty much confirms it.
Calm down dude, you don't kill the other team, you just kick their asses and move on to the next stage. Unless you think that amy wants to date sonic so bad that she murders him from rejecting her too much.
But besides that, it was probably due to limitations of the game itself, since every team only fights two other teams. And tbh, it would've been kinda cool to face the chaotix as team sonic just to see their interactions.

Despite all its flaws, Knuckles Chaotix is an amazing and hilarious multiplayer game. It's wacky and... well, chaotic. It may not be the best Sonic game, or even the best 32x game, but it's always good for a laugh with friends.
It feels like it would be similar to katamari's coop modes, which have you struggling more against your partner than the actual obstacles.
It does sound like it was meant to be played with friends, this game was far too boring to play solo XD

The day / night cycle should have been used to denote height as a pallet change and just used the random enemy placement with the random stage change. Also, the random stage change should have been an option, like extra lives or difficulty should have been.
Chaotix is a lot better with another player. It's made for co-op.
