At around @13:00 John Pizzarelli mentions Joe Pass coming to the family home and trying to figure out how to play on Bucky's seven string. I went to a Joe Pass Master Class in the early 1990's. After an hour of lecture/demonstration, Joe had each attendee come up to play and get his critique. Chicago guitarist Dick Curtis went first and began playing "What Is This Thing Called Love". Joe stopped him immediately and demanded to know "...what the hell kind of guitar is that?" Dick had a seven string that was an older 1940's Gibson L-7 he got at a garage sale and had Bob Benedetto add a seven string neck. Dick asked Joe "Wanna try it?" Joe said "No - I got enough problems with just six strings!"
It is criminal how many licks I have stolen from these performances. I keep coming back. I cannot thank you guys enough for putting stuff like this up and taking the time to shoot it.
What a thoroughly enjoyable video of music and conversation. Please find songs as follows; 1:58 Honeysuckle rose 15:24 Days of wine and roses 32:45 all the things you are Though if it's your first time the conversation is definitely also worth a listen
I was fortunate to meet John Pizzarelli last year at the elmhurst Jazz festival. After his show I went up to him, mentioned that his new guitar was just like my 30s es 250 built by Gibson and sold by Montgomery wards which was kinda like his brand new guitar. On the spot he not only let me try his guitar but he gave me a 7 string lesson. It was so hard to wrap my head around it even though I could imagine it. If you're reading this John thank you. I hope to meet him again someday.
John's older sister was in my class through elementary school and Jr. Hi. I went over to their house a few times; I didn't really know John since he was a few years younger, but I knew their father was a professional guitarist. I don't know if John was playing at that age, but it never occurred to me he would be famous in his own right. This is the first time I have seen him play. Amazing stuff. Very sweet collaboration with Bill Frisell.
Bucky is such a warm soul. I had a long conversation with him about picks and strings and he spoke to me like a person and not as a nobody. I have seen Bill live, but never spoke with him. His warmth comes out through his playing. I like the moments where you can see how they dig on each other's playing. Two different worlds, but amazing...
such an interesting contrast in styles and approach to space. you can really hear their influences in both their soloing and comping. JP clearly coming out of that Bucky P approach of filling things up and several different "big" chords per measure.....and BF w his spare Jim Hall approach.....leaving all that space...and playing little two or three voice shell chords.
I love how mild mannered Bill is and then he just kills it. Pizzarelli sounds great too! What a nice pairing of Musical Sensibilities. Well done, Fretboard Journal ! #Guitar #JazzGuitar #Music #FretboardJournal
This is just so wonderful - to hear them speak with such respect about so many wonderful players of the past who are completely unknown to the younger generations - when I hear them play it is like listening to a dialogue - each listening intently to the other and responding with eloquence and grace - their knowledge and experience speaks through the music they make together here - and Bill reminding us that even when we abandon the things we cherish - if we feel true remorse, they will eventually come back to us - just like when you finish the song - everything comes back home - and for John, what great good fortune in having had a father like Bucky - watching stuff like this is uplifting - it is inspiring - and provides a great diversion from the hellish times we are experiencing right now - better times are coming - we will get through this - together.
How am I finding this now seven years after it was posted? Lovely stuff I must say. Bill was about my age during this recording. What a tasty player. John is a fine guitarist himself. I love it when two musicians are able to anticipate each other and change up their direction to match up or offset what the other plays, and these two guys did a great job of that on this day.
I absolutely love hearing Bill play rhythm. He plays bass and chordal motifs leaving a lot of room and space while still keeping the movement going for John to play on and really dig deep into the range of his guitar. Killer.
very interesting to watch this 2 guy. bill looks like he's in awe all the time, while john trying to figure out what's bill was doing. bill took his time looking for words, while john always speaks in clear volume. yet, they were playing like any other kids figuring out chords for the first time.

I can't forget the first time listening his solos with scats.. for me he was like SRV of jazz guitar.. he sings great too. love his fluent melodic bop lines and killing chromatic chord solos..especially love his guitar-piano-bass trio with Ray Kenndy. few monthes ago I bought his album 'Knowing You' and I heard lot of 'raresung' standards.. I really wish he could come.. I heard he came Korea 2003..and this video is so great!! story about Bill's guitar was so amazing! I haven't thought of John and Bill playing together. for me this video is like a evidence of music, jazz is one thing. even I don't group and categorize music but this 'meeting'(would be better expression) was unimaginable for me. but this video proved performance of two of great musicians with their music, with their guitars is nice..seems like they can to go further. it's interesting that talking style and soloing of Bill's are somewhat similar. great video made me happy thanks for fretboard journal!
When you have had enough of screaming people on tv and radio-this helps to lower the stress levels.I but wish I could pick that nice.I appreciate Bill mentioning the late great Wes Montgomery-a true giant of jazz guitarists.✌️
just wanted to thank you guys @ the fretboard journal to bring us those wonderful moments! You might not be followed by zillions of fans, but I truly value and absolutely love you work, A feeling that goes beyond words, I wish you all the best. Kind regards from Belgium
Those guitar players from the italian american guitar school are at another level! Joe Pass, Bucky Pizzarelli, John P, Frank Vignola, etc. I don't know if its me, but at the very beginning of the video Bill seems intimidated or amazed by John's playing. Both are guitar greats. Thanks for the video.
Great duo!!! Since "two for the road" by Joe Pass and Herb Ellis, I didn't had so much pleasure to listen to a jazz guitar duo. :-) Thanks a lot for this lovely video!!!
These guys can both play lead and accompany very well with both freedom and solid skill. I like the differentation in tone from Bill's sharper tone to John more mellow one. Love John's Moll 7-string for those extra bass notes. Their disparate styles complement each other well. Love Bill's lost /found guitar story. Bill is quiet and diffident John is brash. Both are masters.
Great contrasting styles of two great musicians and yet they compliment each other’s style when they perform a tune. John’s comping is so strong and full and Bill’s harmony is so uniquely beautiful. I love this pairing of two monster guitarist. What a beautiful performance of “Days of Wine and Roses”
When I f irate heard Jim Hall play with Sonny Rollin's on the bridge it was a revelation.........hearing Bill doing solo jazz and with his duo is again a revelation...he is so unique in his approach.
The melding between the two, unrehearsed, on Days of Wine and Roses (one of my favorite standards), was really something. Right afterwards, out loud I said, "fantastic!" exactly 1 second before the host said the exact same thing! It truly was. I came to this video because I thought to myself, Frisell and Pizzarelli?? It's gotta be a joke - they're both great, but have such different styles. Just goes to show how different styles in the hands of masters can complement each other. Really a great sound together. Neither said they were working on any current recording projects. Well.... (hint, hint)...
One of my all time favorite videos! Such different styles fitting together perfectly is magical to hear, and they had never played together! These guys are ace #1 musicians. Love the discussions about music and Bill finding his old guitar. I have watched it many times. Yes!

@Mathias Santana I'll let you know - no one cares
Such a romantic story for Bill's guitar
Cool that this is popping up ten years later. I'm going to see Bill's trio in a couple weeks so I'm really thrilled about this.

I have the exact same story from 1968 regarding my 68 Gibson Melodymaker Bass. Sold it in Cambridge in 74. It came back to me 30 years later
That Days of Wine and Roses is jaw dropping. It actually made me laugh several times. Incredible musical communication and positive energy.
Such tone, touch and delicacy in BF's playing, so understated but nothing more required, a master for sure.
The volume of Mr. Frisell's guitar is similar to the volume of his voice, which in turn reflects his inner peace.

they should do a record together. their very different styles compliment each other greatly.

There's "playing" music, and there's "feeling" music. Frisell and Pizzarelli are good examples of the latter. Bravo!
love the "Paul Stewart tie" remark at 6:52. also love both guitars and cannot believe the acoustic tone John obtains with tape wounds.
Keep on watching this one. So funny when John talks about how his father made him play the "seven cord" :-)
This video is priceless. That "Days of wine and roses" is absolutely fantastic.
Great music, lovely father and son stories.

Just beautiful musicianship, played with such sensitivity. These two should record an album together.
Who could possibly have disliked this video? I couldn't stop smiling the whole time

Wow. Really nice. Thanks, Fretboard Journal!

+Cameron Brwdway u probably got a bigger one
And Bill has better jokes
So delightful to see John's momentary flub and great reaction at 2:32. Two masterful musicians.
Don't be fooled by any of these mild-mannered gentlemen - both are vicious guitar monsters!
Such understated brilliance and fluid joy...so pure. The communication and communion. Get my attention away from "my own little world."
Two greats, super treat, much gratitude.
These two marvelously talented guitarists should make a duo recording of standards. They sound wonderful together playing with such taste and class.
True gentleman!
Fascinating to watch the two of them. Just incredibly fascinating. All of it!
Fantastic

Bill Frisell seems quite introverted and Pizzarelli comes off as quite loquacious and extroverted. Interesting contrast.
