I love NY apartment search videos from native New Yorkers, because usually I learn extra information that's often not mentioned or overlooked in apartment search videos by non-native New Yorkers. Thanks for the transparency and breakdown everything. So helpful!
I hate that for young people today. When I was your age, I had a 1 bedroom apartment in a private brownstone in the Brooklyn for $500 at 21. Working on Wall Street and living the height of NYC life in the 80's. It was a great experience, the NYC I knew is so long gone. No affordable housing opportunities for young people to get out on their own and have those same experiences because they're priced out. $3K to 4K for a 1 or 2 bedroom is absolutely insane.
I’m fascinated by these types of video, I love following along the process and getting to know how it works over there. It’s all I’ve been dreaming about for ages! See, I live in italy and like most Europeans I had the feeling it couldn’t get better than nyc when I was younger. Now? I would never ever stay in ny for longer than a couple of weeks. Regardless of how much one earns, 3-4k is SO MUCH money, I’d rent a villa here with those! And no, not even living in one of the (if not the) most energetic, lively, breathtaking cities in the world justifies that amount of money considering how little you’re getting in exchange. Those apartments are a bit more than HOLES. How are you supposed to live confined in what - 50 to 70mq? And share them too?? Most of us go out to work anyway whereas working from home is much more frequent in the us in general. That means you’re gonna spend a crazy amount of time squeezed in these rabbit holes 😰 how is that life?? I much rather live further away in a decent size apartment. Worst thing is, she’s even lucky to be able to spend so much. So my question is: where and how do those unable to spend the same amount live?
@@jamesconoway1968 The income ratios on a lot of housing lotteries suck unfortunately. I qualify by income but the percentage of my salary they want for rent is more expensive than I could justify paying just to live without roommates. They are not truly affordable. There's only one that I encountered that was truly affordable (like 800 for a one bedroom) but most of the units were set aside for government employees and people with disabilities. Really want to see more truly affordable apartments on the housing lottery. Honestly, I think all apartments should have government mandated rent ceilings

NO but the ivy prejudice is REAL. I've always struggled with housing insecurity and being trusted by people in general. Now that I got into an Ivy and tell people like possible landlords, people from FB marketplace, etc. their trust goes up 1000%. It's SO SILLY girl so yes wear the hoodie! Get a hoodie that says alum too ;)
Its not just ivy, its because you have a degree and are a university graduate. This opens more doors and people most likely will assume you can get or have a good job.
@Christina-qo1xb my point is I'm the same irresponsible POS that I was in community college 🙃 it's purely prejudice and not indicative of anything, honestly
@@oxfordchroma well speak for yourself. Most people grow up and mature after college. I know I did. Also community college is not the same as university and obtaining a 4 year degree..
@Christina-qo1xb I am speaking for myself. I started my undergrad at 26, and will finish at 30, so not much more maturing left for me. I think the mature thing is to realize that people have prejudices that have no logical bearing, even if it's to your benefit. I'm the same person I was when I started CC, and will be the same person when I graduate from this Ivy. I am no more trustworthy or rich now than I was. The only thing I will have is job prospects because employers also hold those same prejudices to my benefit 🙃 not because I am necessarily a better worker.
Why is this the first apartment tour I’ve seen that’s actually showing beautiful, updated and affordable apartments!? I almost thought NYC was unlivable for me 😅
The way I had an economics assignment to look for apartments on street easy and to compare it to my (future estimated) income 😭😭I’m just so proud of you and thank god you have a roommate

Way to drop a bomb on us Maya, 1 and a 1/2 months, I’m wounded, thought we were buddies! Okay, let me stop with the drama, congrats Maya, so happy for you! As you venture along this new journey I pray for your guidance and growth 🥺❤️💕
I feel like I could even take this advice when I go apartment hunting in Toronto because Brooklyn and Toronto are lowkeyyy the same especially when it comes to prices. Luv u🫶🏽
In North Brooklyn like Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Bushwick they have a lot of pre war houses with vinyl siding that have been converted into apartments. They’re walk ups but not as many flights as the tenement buildings in Manhattan where they can have 6 floors. I don’t mind being on the second of third floor but five flights is too much!
I love seeing people my age that are making it, especially at 20 looking for apartments in New York City have expiration for when I make it as well. For someone who is born and raised here I need to stop procrastinating. My school got me caught up
But it shows what kind of buildings and apartments they are making and what I’m looking for because I know I don’t want no small little apartment that looks like a walk-in closet with a kitchen and one window and yes I’m over exaggerating but still. I’m not faking it until I actually make it so it’s good to wait until you know your financially stable.
Oh wow this is the first of your videos I’ve seen, and you sound so smart and calm and put together. Like idk how to explain it but yeah, I’m in love with your video ha
my current apartment is mostly north facing windows and an east facing window and ugh, i specifically wanted to find a better lit apartment but this is my second apartment post college after my first burned to the ground (really cool downstairs neighbor 👍) so I didnt have the luxury of time when looking for a new place to live. But now I know that having it high on my priority list was CORRECT i get so depressed with no direct light
Every apartment actually is really nice and for the price 👌🏾. I live in Atlanta currently and a 2 bd downtown is 2k to 3k easily with no renovations, connivence, or stunning view. Always wanted to move to NYC especially now that I’m just about finished with my finance degree and NY is all about the business and Atlanta isn’t necessarily (so hard to move from college to field down here). Jersey is another option as well or Boston. Honestly keep making these types of video there really helpful and entertaining to watch !!!😂
@@yourfavpersuasion9385 that’s what I’m saying the price is a lot more worth it to me cause the city comes with some much more opportunities to make money have fun and enjoy life versus Atlanta where I’ve been for 19 yrs now and have explored the whole state, things are old and it’s becoming overpopulated, prices are ridiculous and there’s no real benefit compared to NY aside from space which having less isn’t a problem for me specifically
I’m also from nyc and it’s so annoying cause not only the rental market is pricey for weird layouts, landlords are notorious for being difficult cause wth?????
Wow, this video clearly shows how the world is completely different overseas! I'm from the Czech Republic and live in the capital city of Prague. I cannot understand how many requirements you have for your rented space. I understand that room size and lightness/darkness of the apartment (and in your case - laundry) are quite crucial, maybe also the location of building....but amenities - like gym, game room, rooftop terrace, or even having 2 bathrooms? Interesting... I am not hating on your personal choices and requirements, it's just that I would easily applied for many apartments that you rejected and be grateful for them...
They have enough money between them to get the amenities they want. If they did not I'm sure they wouldn't be as picky. It all comes down to your budget.
I live in "upstate" ny and i kinda agree with you. People have such higher standards of living in the US now. I haven't moved out on my own yet but when i do i know im not gonna be picky at ALL.

Interesting to watch these from the UK. We have the same with everyone from overseas wanting to live right in the centre of London and they pay massive rents with demand also very high. I live just into Sussex- 30 mins on the train to London Bridge, 30 mins to Brighton and the coast in the other direction and have the countryside on my doorstep for a fraction of the price!
