    I’m impressed that you negotiated the rent in one apartment and still didn’t feel obligated to take it when it didn’t meet your requirements. Good on you!

      In real life that’s in very bad taste. Negotiate for sure, but unless you want it

      I don’t think it’s a shit move. She negotiated, it still wasn’t where she wanted it to be, so she backed out. It’s called knowing your worth. She knew something was better out there for her, and for probably way less money, and she was right.... right? She absolutely did the right thing. Plus, I don’t think the people who’re renting it out care. Apartments go real quick. Real real which. Someone probably rented that very apartment she backed out that same exact day. Kudos to her!

    • @jenniferbee1500
      @jenniferbee1500 3 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@sketchyhoe7796 It's considered tacky if you negotiate to a fair price point that you're happy with and then back out. For example, I'm selling a tv for $200. You want it for $150. If I agree to $150 and then you back out, that is in bad taste. If you don't really want it, don't waste anyone's time. This is basically universal law adults follow.

    • @sketchyhoe7796
      @sketchyhoe7796 3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      @@jenniferbee1500 to an extent, I agree. Never waste anyone’s time. But you never know what someone’s going through. What if something occurred to where she absolutely had to back out? You never know. Also, a home or an apartment is a huge purchase. Not something anyone should buy irrationally of speedy.

    Apartment hunting in NY was one of the most stressful times in my life. My husband and I just moved from Miami, and although we wanted to initially be living in NY as we are both chefs and will be working in the city anyway, thus making it more convenient, it just wasn’t going to work out. We have a car and we’re also used to having laundry in-unit, and with the amount of laundry we do (uniforms), it’s a must. The prices (we also were in the $2-2.5k range but lower is always better!) were semi-doable but obviously not with all what we need. The last thing I want to do after a 10-12hr shift is walk-up five flights of stairs. And open the door to a shoebox. And then walk back down to do 2 loads of laundry. And move our car because it’s street sweeping day. Then again tomorrow.
    We ended up moving to West New York, NJ as our non-negotiables were all met (laundry in-unit, dedicated parking, rent below $2k) and it’s only 20 minutes by bus.

      Finding a place in any large American city is horrible now days.Seattle and San Francisco are torture tests. You think you have appointments with psychotic managers and no one shows up. That is standard. You pay $3 a square foot, first and last rents, and a damage deposit that you will never get back. Once you are in you can expect 7% rent increases every year which is the most that can be without 6 month notice. You won’t get 6 month notice because then you can prepare to move out. No one cares about any of your concerns because there is always right behind you trying to get a place. The tech industries have destroyed these once beautiful places. Paul Allen was a monster.

    Ha Ha! I was your age in the late 70's and 80's in NYC.NO ONE would live in any borough but Manhattan then. So Ho was still full of industrial lofts that artists rented as cheap art studios/places to live ( streets were dark and creepy at night there), I had a friend trying to make it on broadway and she lived in a studio walkup with an old claw foot bathtub right by the "kitchen".When you turned on the lights, the roaches scattered.It was truly Hell's Kitchen- slummy with porn theaters and drug dealers and hookers.Times Sq was not safe either.Bryant Park was to be avoided.Also a den of thieves, drug dealers, and creepy st people/drug users.Trash was piled up everywhere in Manhattan- but it was also the era of Studio 54 and disco in the early days and my sister and I went often.No B&T's allowed (Bridge and Tunnel peeps from outside Manhattan) and Steve Rubell, CV o-owner of Studio manning the first velvet rope used in a club to select the types he wanted in .No wannabe Tony Maneros need apply ( John Travolta's white Suit wearing character from " Sat Night Fever).
    No movie or doc has ever gotten the essence of NY then eccept maybe Taci Driver- but that did not show the whole pic.I loved it!It was New F.....g York!!! The greatest city in the world, as sung in Hamilton.

    Spot on in terms of the documentation, time involved and just energy and work needed to secure an apartment! This video was beautifully done and incredibly realistic. I lived in NYC twice (company relocations) and just didn’t want the long process, broker drama, etc. the second time around and so went with a national company that owns and manages apartment buildings. Place was awesome! W. 77th between CPW and Columbus. Just shy of 600 sq ft., doorman, basement laundry, etc. easy walk to midtown for work. At the time it was about $3200 and, for me, worth not having the search stress I experienced the first time around, but I also recognize how fortunate I was and that the search experience, of course, varies based on budget.

      i’m not sure if you are American, i’m assuming you are, because the size of those stoves and fridges are the same size of stoves and fridges everywhere else in the world, except for America. Only in America will you find massive fridges. These are regular sized, and quite reasonable seeing as she’s only one person. What Americans consider “small” is actually just normal sized everywhere else lol. Big Fridges and big stoves lead to overconsumption and over consumerism. Bigger storage leads to buying even more food and crap you don’t need. Which is a problem America already has, we shouldn’t encourage even bigger storage for even MORE food, nor normalize huge fridges as normal and healthy. Not to mention a lot of that goes to waste. she doesn’t need that much. It looks like plenty, and like i said, she’s one person.

    I’ve been living in NYC my whole life and I find the sacrifices people make to live in the area they want to extremely interesting. For $2300 a month, I live on the 10th floor, 2 bedroom apartment, 1 bathroom, in a quiet neighborhood and relatively safe neighborhood in the Bronx that has a full city view. It is about 800sq ft and we are all very happy here. Takes 35-40 minutes to get to Times Square. It greatly angers me that the building will not sell us this place and will only let us rent as I would buy it in a heartbeat.

    • @TheFirstDyme
      @TheFirstDyme 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It. Is. What makes where I live now so interesting is where I used to live. We could only afford to live in a mold and rodent infested studio apartment before. After my husband demanded a raise, we could move. Can you imagine moving from a total dump to a dream? We went from living in the lobby of a roach infested building, hearing every person coming in and out, every argument and all. ... To living on the 10th floor and overlooking the city. I watch the sunset every single night and it’s absolutely beautiful. Never gets boring.
      The only sad thing is we started living here September 2019. Have you ever seen a city die from your window? Because I have. Nevertheless this is a palace compared to where we were. It couldn’t have happened at a better time either. Can’t imagine going through the pandemic in that shithole we used to live in.
      July 4th 2020 was a day to remember. It was anarchy in NYC and it was literally non stop fireworks for about 8-10 hours straight. We could see it all over the Bronx, in Manhattan and happening in Queens from here. We could smell the gun powder in the air all night and even in the morning.
