I’m 60 years old. And was born an raised in Manhattan. It’s a crime how they downsized those apartments. I grew up in a large 5 bedroom pre war apartment. Left a long time ago. But if I was young! Nyc is definitely where I would want to be! I left 20 years ago before the rents got high. Congratulations on the new Apartment
How much has the population increased in 60 years? That’s one reason
Nigga ain’t now way in hell you 60
Heh. I'm 35. I was born and raised in the East Village. I grew up in my parent's apartment which was a 3 bedroom. We paid $600/month rent lol.
I also lived with my grandparents during the summer in FiDi, and they had a 2 bedroom for $400.
I went to NYU when I was 16 and got my own apartment. Even when I was 16, living on my own in the LES was doable because rent was still semi-OK, I think my rent was around $1100 at the time for a studio (I had work study to pay for it). (My parents were shocked by the rent, but little did they know what the future held.....). 4 years later when I graduated, the gentrification hit HARD. I got priced out and had to move home (my apartment shot up to $1900 in just 4 years)
I'm 35 now and in a 2 bedroom and paying $4800/month. It's outrageous. Luckily, growing up in the city made me very type A.
My daughter lives with her boyfriend in Manhattan and the number one thing you need is windows and light!! Number 1! So they are moving to Brooklyn and now will have tons of windows, a skylight, even a stoop!
it really makes a difference in your living space!
Is Manhattan a good place to live in bc I’ve been considering moving there but honestly I’m scared
Oh my god. You guys are resilient. I would have given up after my 3rd viewing. I love seeing people who persist to find what they truly like. Thank you for sharing your journey and your thinking process. Congratulations on your new beautiful apartment in Manhattan. Manhattan is absolutely charming.
That's crazy. I lived in NYC in the 80's and I remember having to get an agent to show me apartments but I did not have to pay a broker fee nor one month's rent in advance. They did a background check and that was about it. Now they want to drag you through the process of renting an apartment like you are applying for a mortgage. Insane. People are being raked over the coals in NYC just to find someone place to live. Though I loved my time in New York, the NYC I grew up in as a young person in my twenties(80's) is sooo different to what is going on in the City now. How you guys are even able to maintain out there is beyond me.
This is actually very informative and helpful. We visited NY last August and we immediately fell in love with the City.
So far this is the only video with so much info of each thing discussed, thank you Hannah!!!
Hannah - This was so helpful. Thank you. Congrats on the new place.
Thank you so much!☺️
Congratulations 🎉 on your new apartment ! Can’t wait to see you decorate it with your beautiful decor !
Thank uuuuu! I can’t wait til the whole apartment comes together💕
I loved the first apartment that you applied to but the one you chose is also really nice! Love the rooftop views honestly.
I mean omg they make it IMPOSSIBLE to rent a place!!!! I thought three times the rent was bad but FORTY!? FORTY TIMES THE RENT!?!?! Absolutely insane, I guess I'll be living with my mom forever omg
3x is for monthly income. 40x is used to calculate yearly income so it's really only a little bit more than 3x :)
shes also not a citizen so that might make a difference
Yesssss I’ve been waiting for thissss ❤❤❤
☺️🥰💕
Such an informative and helpful video! Congrats on the new apartment! 👏👏
Thank you!!
as someone who lives in france the prices are CRAZY omg!! also i giggled when you said you weren't going to say the neighbourhood your appartment was in for safety reasons but then you proceeded to show a full 360° of the rooftop haha but this video was so niceee!!
It's commensurate with salary. I lived in Paris and it's comparable to NYC in terms of % of salary to rent ratio. Same in most big cities tbh.
You definitely chose the bestttt apt 🎉
Hannah - nice video. I really like your editing style. I know the apartment hunt is BRUTALLL - I just did it. Keep crushing it! 👏
thank you so much!! congrats to you as well! :)
Manhattan apartment setups remind me of submarine living quarters. I could see myself living in one for similar reasons - ie: spending 99% of my time “on duty” doing employment/city stuff and only using it for sleep. Practically hot swapping with roomies on different shifts. The pricing also seems targeted for the short term (starts at 3.5K and rises). Hopefully, the home pricing gets a bit friendlier in the near future.
Congrats on the new place!! So glad you avoided all of those fees!!
Thank u Janet!💗 yesss those fees are crazy😩
I loved all the information that you provided, definitely learnt a lot and congratulations on your move
thank you so much!!
Love these videos! Congrats on your place :)
thank you so muchh!
Congratulations on your new place, Hannah.. 👏🏾 🙌🏾 ✨️
Thanks Samantha!!🥰
Thank you for such an informational video!
Thanks for watching!💗
So helpful!! And so fab!!!!
Hehe ty Lois💗
Amazing 🤩
My favorite is the one with the white counter tops in the kitchen. Very nice.
Congratulations 🎊 It's a beautiful unit, love the natural lights as well. 🙂
thank youu
wow, you definately got the best one, gym laundry room and a view of the empire state building: I know you will be truly happy in your new home x
Congrats!! You have the city as ur backyard ❤
Thanks Jon! Need to have you over soon :)
Amazing video ❤
Renting an apartment can be really stressful especially getting bank statements and paystubs I had to pay a vendor online lol
Who is the vendor???
The variety of textures in the uzbagx pack is impressive. From smooth leather to textured suede, there's something for everyone.
I love it. The kitchen is beautiful!
thank you!!
Thanks for sharing this! I always like to see how other states are like with apartment rental especially in Manhattan!
NYC has to be one of the most competitive..😭
Congratulations! P.S Love the editing
thank you!!
What a great video!
Well done Hannah, congratulations on your new apartment 🎉🎉🎉 I love your video, I am going to buy an apartment now ☺️
thanks Ricky!! We can be neighbors😁
this was soooo helpful! thank you so much for creating this. 🫶🏽
tysm for watching!!💗
JY back at it again with the apartment tour! Congrats on the new apartment! If I move to Manhattan I’m going to ask you for advice ^^
Ahahah thanks Andy!! I got u😁
The financial aspect of this alone is fascinating to someone who has never lived in such a place. In the south, where I am from, you usually have a security deposit (1/2 or full rent) + 1st months rent. And rent will cover all the amenities of the place, no condo or co-op. But the brokers fee?! 😮
To rent this $3000 example, you would need around $11,500 just to get in the apartment. (Not including any condo/co-op fees) it's just insane to consider this. Also, as someone who has a gross annual income over $120k.. I still can't imagine my rent/mortgage being $3k.
I love the idea of living in Manhattan.. but it is truly a different type of person that can live in cities like this.
Congratulations on the new place as well. 😊
Yes exactly!! Plus the condo/co-op fees are not returned back to you like a security deposit is, so if you have a brokers fee on top of that…💀
hey hannah, great video! just curious, what websites did you guys use to find these apartments? i've been using streeteasy for the most part, but would love to learn if i can find options elsewhere as well!
You chose the right one for sure!
Ahhh ty💗
It’s funny you can tell which one you liked by the change in excitement in voice LOL 😂 ICE machine… ROOOFtop 😂🎉 congrats can’t wait for the full apartment tour
The ice machine is gold😆😆😆
omg love this and congrats!!! what lashes do you have on?
Thank you!💕 I have lash extensions☺️
Hi Hannah, thanks for the video. How did you find the apartment? The price is so reasonable. Which area is this?
Great choice.
Congratulation on the new apartment! As a couple we didn’t think we can make it to get an apartment in new York with the range of rental you had ,But seeing this video with all the details and tips gave us a big hope ! Thanks really
congrats !!!
Thank you!☺️
Nice list of apts.
In NYC you no longer have to submit to a credit check. You can also provide receipts from rent payments.
You can avoid brokers theft, I meant fees by renting directly from the owner or management company.
If you get your apartment from the affordable housing lotteries then you don't pay any fees
I would NEVER, EVER pay a "broker" for finding me an apartment that I can find myself.
How do you go about getting the apartment without the broker fee? /gen
You can also filter your search on Streeteasy to "no fee", which helped me during my search!
@@HannahJYMoon thank you!!:)))
You don’t need to go through a Broker. There are a ton of apartments with in house leasing offices just like in California.
This was a down grade from the high rise, that apartment was so beautiful 😍😍
Congrats! My favorite part would be having a door man and elevator bldg lol
tysm💕& agreed!😆
What do you do with your car when living in New York? I’m coming from LA. Ty!
I live in Idaho and my mouth popped open when I heard about the fees!!!!
How much was rent in your lic place ? Me and wife r looking into lic with floor to ceiling windows
Congrats! you got a true 1 bedroom... some of the apartments were really former studios
beautiful
The view from your rooftop is amazing 😍
Thank youuu☺️
NYC ❤
Excellent video thank you
tysm!!!
Hi! Thanks so much for the video. About how long did it take you to find the apartment?
we looked for around 2 months, but a lot of options come up a month before the move in date! the good ones go super fast
Super informative!! Those fees are so ridiculous 🤢-nice choice avoiding!
The fees are so bad!!😩
These fees and 40x the rent requirements are disrespectful! Lol Congrats on the new apartment!! 😊
I agree!!😣 hehe thank you!
Hey Hannah, thanks for your great video. What if someone lives there from outside of the US? Can I share my tax returns and everything else from Canada?
Thanks
I don’t know why people are obsessed with NYC seems like everyone is moving there. I like looking at moving vlogs.
Apartments shown at 9:10
this is wild! I've never heard of an apartment wanting 40x the monthly rent :O
new york is built dif
Right, that’s crazy 😮
That number is pre tax
The tax rate is about 30% maybe 35%
So after tax and after rent you are left with not much
Man I would love to live in New York but those apartments are ridiculously small. I just wouldn’t be able to get use to not having that much space 🥲
I can’t help but wonder what’s the average income in New York 40 to 80x your income is crazy are there any exceptions? Or is that everywhere I’m looking to try to move there soon as a new grad cybersecurity engineer but I won’t be making 120,000 just 89,000 any help would be nice because my job will be remote so the area doesn’t matter.
No matter how many videos about renting apartments in NY I see, I'm always supriced by those prices. One of the reason why I moved to Austria is the rental market. For 3500$ which you have you could rent here 120sqm loft, probably with swimming pool in the garden. I'm not even earning that kind of many to be able to spend over 3000$ only on the rent. Of course earning are higher, but still spending so much many just on a small living space for me just shows that something went wrong in the development of the country. Nevertheless, I would like to visit NY ;)
Are you also comparing salaries?
NY salaries are 10 times higher
The rental requirements for NY is crazy + brokers fee jeeeez
For me, as a European, apart from the fact that New York is interesting only as a tourist and I would never live there, I must note that the prices of apartments are too expensive and waaaaay overpriece bec that is New York......
Life in Europe is incomparably better and the prices are normal
And salaries?
@@user-mz7de3kc3d It depends where you live..... I live in Italy (my part of country have around up to 1400euro/month)
In some other countries, the standard is higher and the salary is over 2,000 euros
why do you need a broker for getting an apartment tho? what a big fee :O
I get people make loads of cash in NYC, but those requirements seem outlandish. Yikes!
I'm sorry but that's a rip off. Place is only $3,600 because they added new appliances. Bathroom needs work. $3,600 is way to much but hey congrats and best of luck
My daughter just got a job offered in Manhattan. She looking for a studio apartment. Could share your rental website again. I must say your video was well detail!
it's streeteasy.com :) tysm for watching!
Beautiful name.
40 times?!? Nah y’all need to see the governor and senator on this crap! That’s WILD!!!! A reference letter? FOH 😂😂😂 It’s a LETTER not a JOB!!!
Yea it def needs to be illegal to Capitilaze on convience and appliances 😩😒
what if i’m a college student with a minimum wage part time job? what kind of apartment can i get because if i have to afford 40 times the monthly then my options are zero, this would also be my first apartment i’m looking for one to move into around this time next year. any recommendations for college students?
a lot of college students use a guarantor, but they would have to annually make 80x the monthly rent!
Roommates?
I'm good. I personally would never live in NYC nor California its too expensive too crowded not my places to ever live at.
The apartment floorplans you see in the city are beyond ridiculous
Sounds like a dystopian future to me.
It's funny how you didn't critisize your apartment's bathroom, which was clearly one of the oldest looking of the bunch.
That is way to much rules just to rent a apartment
That brokers fee is a scam
80????!!!
Damn, 14:06 the husband type sexy... you two are my inspo ❤🔥
😆😆😆 ty Ok!! Hope we see u soon☺️
They have ruined a lot of old apartments
10k just to move is absolutely disgusting! This country needs to be ashamed of itself
Living in NYC is such a rip off
Daddy’s girl
That is way to much rules just to rent a apartment
