This was a very confusing video and because you wouldn't tell us what happened nor at least how you dealt with it, you really didn't help anyone else if they find themselves caught up in a similar situation. Especially the lady and her son next to you, was know explanation if they left the site to, or did you leave them there alone. You say you were being attacked in the title but refused to say exactly what happened it's not like we require every juicy detail but seriously a little bit of information would have helped. If you are not prepared to explain things that happen then don't leave titles like that, it's very frustrating and kinda clickbait feeling. I hope you don't have anymore problems on your travels, Scotland is a gorgeous place. God bless and stay safe.

I always back in to spots, for a quick getaway. But i often think ...if someone wants to attack, they could just park infront of me, and block me in. Then i think i should find a spot that's open infront and behind me. But then, the attackers could come in 2 cars, and block me from both ends.

Very similiar thing happened to my family and I at a beach resort in California many years ago. I was only about 12 years old, but I can still remember being woken up by loud banging on the sides of my mom and dad's 5th wheel camper. Luckily my dad had his firearm with him and ultimately scared the group of guys away. But you know, here in the states you don't know whether you're walking out into an open gun fight or not. I just remember feeling so scared for my pops. Crazy night

Had a few incidents living in my van, worst one was a group of about 5 lads, I woke up with 2 of them on the roof trying to break open the skylight, at least one trying to rag the side door open and the others trying to get in the front, I kept quiet for a few minutes whilst I gathered my thoughts, I had an axe in the van and all I could think was to grab the axe and kick my door out hopefully knocking the one trying to break in back, so boot the door I did, I just ran out screaming like a fucking Viking waving an axe (didn't intend to use it, I'm no murderer) sure as shit they all absolutely legged it and I was glad to see one of the ones that jumped off the roof (it was a Luton) had clearly broken or sprained his ankle in the escape, he could barely walk and he was shitting himself. That was the final straw for me after 3 years of van living, I couldn't be arsed with the dick heads anymore and the world's only getting more hostile.

We’ve been camper vanning for 5 years. We quickly realised its not always safe to stop over in beauty spots. We had an incident where we were woken up in middle of night by people in cars shouting, and I was scared. We decided to look for small basic, scenic campsites to stop over, and have found absolute gems, and had the best time ever. We did Scotland for two weeks, we didn’t wild camp once, and felt safe on fab campsites. We only stopped in beauty spots in daylight. Be careful, there are dangerous people around. Not everyone likes camper vanners, as not all camper vanners are respectful of the local community.

Thieves after diesel, the goods on the trailer or even the vehicle itself. Years ago, me and my brother car camped. We had a visit in the night from three people. We rightly assumed they'd be back later (we did nothing first time, neither did they). We set up a tarp out off sight & waiting with weapons. The visitor's car sped past to check we we're there and we waited for them to return. Under a hour later, car pulled up, a bit further off than previous, then three guys got out and quietly headed to our car. They were armed with items to supposedly smash windows? Their muffled giggling stopped abruptly when me and my bro' came striding out of the woods in dark in ski masks, all in black with superior weaponry proclaiming we've been waiting for you boys - they fled in sheer panic - it was great to see the tables turned. We drove off laughing and found another spot miles away.

Many years ago in Italy someone broke our camper at night while we were sleeping inside and stole a lot of things. After a while I woke up because of the noise and realized that someone was inside the car. I screamed and woke up my husband. Before we could even hold the thief, he had already escaped. He had taken money, credit cards, cell phones and sunglasses with him. The idea that he could have taken my 6-month-old son with him hit me deeply and I realized how vulnerable you are in the car. That was only on the 6th day of our camper's life and I didn't sleep well for months after that. Many years later we had the camper stolen in Rome and it never turned up again.

These days criminals break into houses even when there is a whole family there. This happened to my colleague once and a boyfriend. And they have security. It is a lot harder to find park ups with decent lights and CCTV unless you pay to park there. Saying that, criminals also target people in car parks even though there is CCTV which makes no sense but shows how brazen they are.

I usually travel with my labrador and if she hears someone approaches she grumbles just enough to wake me up, but if anyone does touch the door she sounds as aggressive as aggressive can be (if only they knew that she isn't!). On one occasion I was parked in a forest at around midnight and a chap fully opened the side door. He looked in and simply said "Oh, you've got a dog". I jumped up and asked if he needed help or something, he mumbled something about 'wrong van' and scurried off. Weird.

Also, thanks for being so open about what happened, I've often wondered if this is a possible danger of outdoor camping...

Its sad that we have to be worried about attacks etc but they do happen so glad you were honest about it. I had a similar experience years ago while in a tent...... Must admit I would NEVER get out of the van as you just never know what could happen. People can be on drugs and drink and not respond rationally, or could have a knife etc. Better to just drive off in my opinion and inform the police as well.

I live on the NE 250 route and problems with campervans is on the increase - it seems many van users think they are "wild Camping" and wrongly think they can park anywhere under the protection of the Scottish Country access code which makes it legal to wild camp. None of this justifies any attack on vans and I hope you have had no further issues.

Back in the 80's I was 12 and alone in our Campervan in Brindisi, Italy - my parents were buying ferry tickets and had left me with instructions to never open the doors. Dodgy Italian guys were peering in the windows and rocking the van. I armed myself with a big knife and as one of them was looking in I jumped up and yelled and smacked the window with the knife - he jumped back. Never heard a thing after that.

I had this video pop up in my recommendations so I watched it. It must have been terrifying to be woken up that way. That being said, although you said you have been trained in conflict Management, why did you get out of the van? If they were better prepared outside the van you could have been overtaken in just imagine what could have happened to your wife. Wouldn't the smarter thing have been to get in the front seat and drive away immediately? Thank God you both are safe. But you drove away from there anyway. I would say this even to a police officer or trained military person. It just would have been so much safer to hop in the front seat and drive away then to open the door and expose all of you to what dangers were outside. Safe travels ❤️

Friends of mine did a VW Van trip from Arizona, usa to the tip of Argentina that took months and they only had one scary incident where they accidentally wandered onto some guarded property trying to find a scenic spot to sleep for the night. Two men with guns approached her and Luckily my friend has a degree in conflict management. She was able to cobble together enough coversational Spanish to explain that they are just van campers and she and her partner were not a threat. Eventually, they were dubbed a non-threat and allowed to stay the night on their land. Communication is key. Be safe out there!

The man is perhaps being as honest as he can be. Our self defence laws are a joke in Scotland. Be careful what you say on here as never incriminate yourself. Lastly, im just glad they got out the situ safe and continued the trip. Sorry it happed guys. The country folk near to me have organised their own patrols as they keep getting their stuff nicked but im on outskirts of Glasgow....moving to Islay in Jan. Stayed there often , with so little crime and real honest and friendly folk of all ages. Beats my experience of UK cities hands down as ive lived in three ....sorry to say they are getting worse. I wild camp often , no vehicle just me and my Belgian Shepard ans some working tools. Though im relatively young and use every little trick i was shown in the army. Small trip wires that attach to blank cartridges are legal, will disorientate little aholes and wake you for sure. Attached to a few steel pegs around the van would take a couple of minutes. Last thing you want is a knife in your tyre. After being a doorman i know how hard it is to take on multiple attackers and if you have to use the weapon there is a big chance you still do prison in UK. Get prepared, just in case, every time i go i prepare and nothing has happened. Predators choose victims carefully most of the time. When prepared they sense it.

Hi, thanks for sharing this. My wife and I had an experience in France in official motorway stop. We were on way back from south France in a T4 van. We found most secluded spot in services by some trees, mistake. In middle of night I was disturbed by someone outside. We both wake up at drop of a pin normally. We awoke again confused about two hours later, thinking the lights had been on. I turned headlights on, we could see My wife’s handbag was outside. I got out, realised lock on door was broke, all our money was missing. Then we realised someone had been inside our small T4 van while we slept. They literally searched through leaning over us taking every English pound and every euro, lost about £700 total. This particular services had other reports of camper drivers being gassed as they slept. We think this must have happened as we sleep with head by the door, they broke the lock to get in. It has taken a few years to get confidence back but many lessons learnt. Now we have locks on inside of doors as well as standard lock. We never park in a secluded spot, even in official services. 😀
