really excited about 14. The pattern editor and drum machine is an absolute game changer for us dance music producers. Its going to help with workflow a huge amount.
Great update. Glad to see Steinberg is back on the innovation train after the (probably very time and resource consuming) transition to native Apple Silicon compatibility
Just to add in case you haven't seen it... On the drum machine the play variance and velocity variance isn't just there... It's also in the drop down menu of the editor so every midi part can have some variance applied randomly, lovely jubbly
I did buy it in the 50% period. that was an amazing deal. all these feature upgrades for 99 euros, still an amazing deal separately. absolutely not salty, 100% worth :D
At 19:20: "Back in the day... like yesterday." Gave me a laugh:) I'm excited about the pattern track. It's not only like Ableton, but also like my first DAW: Reason. Reason has a wonderful drum machine. But now, it seems that we can edit drum loops while seeing all the layers. Very nice. And of course, the Dorico-run notation engine is heavily exciting! Now that Dorico's integration into Cubase has officially begun with this release, it will only get better. Dorico rocks!
Just for the Modulators alone, it was a no-brainer upgrade. I'm lucky enough to have worked my way up to 'Pro' several years back so, in my case, I think the upgrade is well worth it. Oh, and that shimmer reverb...
Pattern editor is why I still have Ableton around. If this replaces the need for two DAWs (one for composing, one for live performance) for me, that'd be amazing.
for production any DAW including Cubase offer more than Ableton , but not sure for LIVE situation . Session view in Ableton including Max4Live tools for live performance really over the top especially if you daisy chaining bunches of midi controllers ( for live purposes)
Hey Jeff, I love your videos. The new modulators look to be heavily inspired by Bitwig. I've recently switched from Cubase to Bitwig as my main DAW. Awesome 3rd party scripts (I use one called DrivenByMoss) let you seamlessly control Bitwig using Maschine hardware. I'm finding it to be everything I ever wanted from Maschine and more. I'd love to hear your take on Bitwig and how it might fare as a potential replacement for Cubase/Maschine in your workflow. Cheers
I started looking away from NI when I saw how they responded to the bug that was plaguing Maschine 2.0. and fell in love with Cubase by accident ProTools (pro quality) FruityLoops (amateurish but gets the job done) Ableton Live (nice sound quality/gets the job done, features!) Logic (pro quality, OS limitation) Maschine (DAW company? Keyboard company? The f-up of Maschine 2.0 revealed that they care more about selling the hardware versus making the software actually work in a worthwhile manner. Now I understand why the keyboard and Maschine drumpad are non-standard closed-loop stupidity) Cubase is pro quality with lots of features, pro sound quality, OS indifferent, the creators of the VST and other contributions in DAWs, open to EXPECTED MIDI standards and protocols
Hey Jeff - super info, looks great. Will almost certainly upgrade but can you tell me what is the longest setting for the LFO? And is it in beats or can you set it in seconds/minutes?
Hi Jef, I would LOVE to see you demo the pattern sequencer using maschine expansions and possibly the maschine controller, if that’s possible. Given that it’s so painful to get maschine to play nice within Cubase…
Thanks for your video, i really like this new update (i m waiting for your video on maschine 3.0 especially if they improved the midirouting with cubase, and midi routing saving , especially because i will not be able to use my maschine mk2 i hesitate to update)
Try some innovative use of the step sequencer as a riff generator, set to follow the chord track to come up with end of phrase fills etc. Then use the modulators with the main macro knob as an overall modulator with modulators modulating modulators for transitions and other FX. Can you save those setup? Ideas for building libraries of modulation setups and step sequencer setups, both drums and synths. 3 video ideas for you! Good times.
Lots of good stuff in this update for me - especially the score editor but the transition was painful and I had to do a lot of manual copying prefs etc - that should all happen automnatically. It's never been smooth for me.
I would love to have in midi remote the ability to edit the Midi message (midi note, midi cc) and not only control the parameters of cubase. It would be so useful for mapping the note of certain controller that don't have the ability to do it. Or making multiple page with one controller.
This new integrated drum machine, arp, and modulator makes me think Steinberg is zeroing in on a commodity set of features. I'm ok with that. I hope they bring over the rest of the Groove Agent and maybe the Backbone stuff. I don't ever really use them standalone or as plugins for other DAWs.
For 10 years I've been wanting and complaining to Steinberg about needing something like the drum editor. In my opinion, they knocked it out of the park. I wish I could resize it a bit, but that's nitpicking.
Bought 13 pro for just £147.60 with their vouchers that tons of people were giving away on their forum in their September sale. To upgrade from 13 Pro to 14 Pro cost me just £83, total of £230.60, don’t think I’ve ever seen it that cheap. Likewise, upgrading from 12 to 13 Pro in September, was $100, to upgrade from 13 to 14 pro is also $100 But to upgrade from 12 to 14 pro is $200 so it hasn’t cost you any more
Hey Jef I wonder if you can help me out I saw a video from dom siglas and he went to the media bay section and transposed a loop and when he drag and dropped it to the timeline it retained the transposition that he did in the media bay. Well when I do it it’s off key and not working correctly. I even dragged a drum loop from a pack that I have and it had the tempo information correct and it’s still off beat? So weird.. I opened studio one and ableton and I don’t have this problem at all so it must be something with the setting I assume?

Jef, could you please make a comparison between this new Cubase 14 drum machine and NI Battery 4? I'm actually trying to decide between buying NI KS-15 beats (mainly because of Battery 4) or to update my Cubase 13 artist to 14, which is about the same $. Thanks a lot. Luv your videos.
Hi Bernardo! Battery and even Groove Agent SE which you already have, are way more powerful than the drum machine in C14. It really is just a simple playback device, with built-in synths (which is cool) but for sample manipulation you can't beat Battery or Groove Agent (even the SE version of Groove Agent). It really might be all that you need, there isn't much that Battery can do that GA can't. They both are just EXTREMELY overdue for an update!!
Great video as always Jef. I already updated to version 14. Awesome update. I'm using Bitwig as well from time to time and I like that Dawproject integration. One more feature will nice to have in the future, Splice integration in Cubase.
So you are saying that I could have bought Cubase at a 'discount" a short time ago, then paid a full price for the latest version a short time later? BUZZZZZZ! As an outsider looking in, I see this as the wrong answer. I'm looking into other options right now as I am not happy with the path Studio One is taking. This is just as bad, IMHO. NOT blaming you, Jef! I love your videos and look forward to each one. But if this is how Cubase wants to treat their customers, I won't be one. YMMV
@jefgibbons it's incredible, I'm just having a good old play with it now... We need to get maschine hooked up to this drum machine so we can ditch maschine software once and for all 🤣 straight off the bat steinberg have done a better job than native and the macro modulators are Phenomenal!! So many nice features in this update.. I also love the export Daw Project compatibility... This has recently started happening within the VFX world between major software houses and although I may not be using it in cubase for a while it's a huge step in the right direction for folk collaborating or for the back and forth between artist and engineer
@@R1PPA-C Man, I would LOVE to have a Maschine-like controller for Cubase!!! The sampler track and the new drum track are really fantastic, we just need a good surface to do actual editing/work on... still love Maschine for that! @jefgibbons I think a lot of us would appreciate someone doing the hard work and creating a full midi remote template for maschine to go straight into cubase drum machine, thanks Jeff you're a good egg! 😂
Only a year and we Cubase 13 users still have to pay for the upgrade? They use to come out every 2-3 years. Bunch of features though, but many of them should have been included in 13. Bet Steinberg held on to this for a long time to make more money from us. This is almost becoming a subscription model.
I just think when you compare it to Logic (free updates) this supports a crew that is cranking out way more feature updates than Logic! But it's not a subscription so you don't have to keep paying...
@@jefgibbons That's fair, I guess. And the lower update price match the shorter time period between Cubase 13 and 14. And it seems that the amount of features per "updatebuck" is through the roof! (Haven't got into using all new in 13 yet. Old habits persist)
Yes, tremendous update, but... many of these features are already available in other DAWs for a few years already. The only thing that would be mildly exciting for me is a fully integrated crosstalk with Dorico, but its not fully implemented yet. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Cubase is modernizing but it still has a long way to go.
It's more about it getting those other features to combine with Cubase features other programs don't have. They really are trying to make a program that can suit anyone and I feel like they keep getting closer to that goal.
You got paid, Jeff. Just say it with me. I got paid, and I got paid, lol. But here is the kicker. You normally just show us how it works or what what features are the best.
