At 8:09: what a big deal to be able to play a line in Cubase, then reference however many additional lines within the score editor. I'm so glad for that. This is absolutely wonderful for those of us who prefer to visualize our counterpoint lines or harmonic voice leading via notation, all the while working, nonetheless, side by side in the DAW. At 18:00, your quote regarding the score editor is significant: "It's definitely the beginning of a journey for them, not the point of arrival." The Dorico engine rocks and will only get better by the day. The beat editor is better than Propellerhead's Reason DAW. I've been missing the Redrum editor in Reason. Now, the new pattern track in Cubase solves that for me. In fact, Cubase's pattern track is far better given we can see all the layers simultaneously. And yes, while other DAWs cater to the lesser musically inclined, Cubase openly embraces the knowledgeable composer. I share your excitement, Guy: Thank you, Cubase team! I feel this is the standout upgrade for what many of us have been waiting.
It drives me crazy that Cubase when rendering a selection of midi to audio STILL wont name the audio track automatically. Its a constant and everyday task that has the extra two steps of clicking and naming. I hope they fix this as so many have complained on this for a long time!
You never disappoint in both the entertainment and the knowledge department. :) I'm already spending every free minute on the new release since yesterday, love the pattern editor and the general cleanup of the interface. I love Cubase picking the best from Ableton and Bitwig - there's no shame in using what works for the competition.
I'm totally convinced by the Score Editor, and that's the main reason why I'm going to upgrade my Cubase version. Now: is it possible to transfer a piece written with Dorico to Cubase just as easily, to achieve a better, more human result by reworking dynamics and nuances? Alas, I don't think so... But I'm asking anyway, in case anyone can give me some tips (I'm a bit of a beginner, but I've already tried some unconvincing... and time-consuming things). And of course, thanks Guy! You're one of the reasons on Earth that pushed me into this adventure!
I wasn't sure about the upgrade from 13 to 14 as I'm just a basic user but the scoring aspect has pushed me to upgrade. Thanks for this, it was very useful.
Since 14 drops out , I have been wondering and counting the seconds when Guy's review would appear. You never disappoint. I had a smile on my face from the first seconds of the film. That intro haha. As for C14. It's really special I'm only angry and regret that I grabbed v13 at the last big sale at the end of September and of course activated it straight away to use. I had no idea that v14 would drop in two months. Those who bought v13 at the last sale to use it straight away don't get the grace period unfortunately Ehhh. But I think I will still be tempted and ill decide to take it anyways. I'm secretly hoping for the Christmas sale as I doubt it will be on Black Friday.
I used the Updates and Upgrades tab on the 'buy now' pop up - I know it's a hit but it's only £83.00 for Cubase 13 users (I say only - that's a lot for most of us, still...!).
Thanks Guy! Learned a lot from the videos and the courses I've taken. I recently upgraded to CB 13 and was thinking this might not be worth the effort. Your video convinced me such is not the case! BTW, my vocalist wife is not involved in the programming world at all, but will watch your videos with me because you're so entertaining!
I was waiting for your video about Cubase 14 and I knew that I was going to hear and see something extraordinary and I was right 😅 Thank you! What a Guy!!! 👍
Worth a 'like' and a subscription (If I wasn't subscribed already) for the introduction track alone.... Classic!!! . I just bought 14 for the new score features. This vid more than made my mind up for me. Nice 1 one Guy! I did originaly buy Dorico as I assumed that it would work well with Cubase. This wasn't always the case but it sure is the case now. and it's just the beginning apparently. The only thing which they previously had in common was the difficulty for new users getting into the detailed and sometimes complex features!!!
Been using it alongside 13 for a few days (nearing the end of a game project so not going to switch yet). It’s a big step change, and as you said mate, the score editor is a game changer.
Yess🎉 features look great. I did notice in the release notes, that Steinberg did mention performance improvements. I would be interested to see by how much. Thanks Guy great video/ song 😂. 🙏
would it be rational to try and compose everything via the cubase 14 score editor then do any sound design in cubase 14 itself? im considering switching over from musecore. What are your thoughts?
The clip gain feature with the range selection is what I've always wanted, thank you for showing it! :D P.S: Cubase 14 is better than Ableton in most cases, except maybe for pure EDM easy creation.
"Whole digit upgrade" made my day ! I must be using some really ancient VSTs? Mine have modulation and LFO "IN THEM" already.... Seriously did Cubase not have a grid editor in it already? Wow!
You are totally missing the point that you can modulate multiple VSTis AND plugins AND any knob or fader anywhere in Cubase using the same modulator instance - massive. There are already two ways of grid editing in Cubase - but the new third one has many more tools like play probability, random velocity, repeater tool, the ability to paint set patterns in one click, randomiser for patterns and much, much more.
Thanks for the great overview! I always enjoy your videos. This is cool. Especially the LFO thing.... And the drum machine... but they already had features like this, they were just a bit more convoluted. The MIDI effects could kind of do this and there was a drum sequencer.
For me, the Notation alone makes it worth the upgrade. Now if it can interpret velocity and/or midi CC such as CC11 as dynamics markings, or adjacent notes as legato that would be just unbelievable.
It would be great if Guy did a video demonstrating his integration/use of Elgato Stream Deck with Cubase. I've just bought one for Christmas now I've got to figure out how to use it with Cubase etc.
Hey @Guy Michelmore, what do you think about Clip View(as in Cubase, LPX and Ableton...), do you think it would be a good add to Cubase 15? do you think it's needed?
Can you import dorico orchestral project into cubase? And also when you have articulation, do the libraries play them? I mean here libraries like Kontakt or East West.
hey you're a great guy, do you have any issues with scripts not working for your MIDI controller?, what keyboard MIDI controller are you using?, I'm having to add the MIDI remote controller manually every time, saving a template or saving a project doesn't save a loaded MIDI remote controller
It's a perfectly timed release for me, as I'm in a position of seriously considering switching from FL Studio to Cubase as my main DAW for writing orchestral music esp. with Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra. I'm currently trying the Cubase 13 60 day trial, and then out pops Cubase 14 with a much upgraded score editor... Just as well I didn't go straight for a purchase of Cubase 13.
Hello Guy. I wonder if you can you help me please? I’m considering changing my Mac desktop to a Mac book pro. What model is required in order to handle Cubase 14? I’d like to write to motion video too so it would need to be a system to handle that. Thank you in advance Gareth
Hi Guy. Here's a little tip for you. The next time you launch Cubase 14, hold down the Option key. You'll see something interesting (and actually quite useful).
will cubase still go on sale for black friday/cyber monday even though 14 just released? I want to finally get around to purchasing cubase but want to make sure I don't miss out on a deal.
Hello Guy. I have a question, if you please. I'm using 13 pro now so I've jump up to 14 Pro soon. I consume a lot of your content. I own BBC Symphony, but only own CORE. I'm sure there'll be a NICE offer from Spitfire coming my way, this holiday season. I hear YES and NO, as far as IS ITI WORTH the money to upgrade to BBC PRO. Some days, I think it's mostly MICs and more MICs. I hear this wonderful sound from the symphony so often and heard it TODAY in your content: that magical rolling, boiling sound of the HARP low to high) where you expect Tinker Bell to appear at its end. HOW do you do that? A glissando, I suppose it is. Is it merely some recorded sample playback or are you playing in all those notes? And do you have Any /DO/DON'T opinion about BBC Pro? I'd have to buy another SSD, just to contain it all. Thanks. Mark
so is still not possible some kind of interaction between them? Not possible If i want to write my main orchestra stuff in dorico and more electronic stuff in cubase, without write in dorico, export midi and reimport into cubase
I bought Nuendo 13, and bugger me, within a few minutes they announced Cubase 14 Pro upgrade, and bought it straight away. I shall be doing the same with Nuendo 14, when it arrives, which boasts a wider range of improvements.
One thing I hate about the line tool is the first time you click on it, it sets the gain at the point you click. So if you clicked at the bottom your gain will go to 0. So you kind of have to guess where it is your current position or volume is at. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Whatever the case, the new tools are fantastic and thanks for the video.
ANTHONY NEWLEY! My mum thought he was very "dishy" and he came to my childhood home a few times with his then girlfriend Joan COllins I think. I was too small to remember
@LeeGee when I'm time stretching and transposing audio clips using the elastique pro Time algorithm I'm getting some clicking and popping randomly. To counter that I have to render the regions in place and then use them.
C14 doesn't load VST2 plugins by default, so it might be that you need to (re)install the VST3 version of Opus. There is a way to enable VST2s (enable the VST 2 plug-in scanner in the VST Plug-in Manager) but it will vanish from future versions, so you'd want to move on from VST2.
I don't quite get the modulators. I mean, every single VST I own already had the same functionality. All this does is separate the modulation from the vst window, doesn't it?
New score editor seems great! But frustratingly useless for me. (Or rather, I am useless for it!) I can't use it for the same reason I can't use Dorico. I compose entirely in score with mouse, but I compose by ear. I need to HEAR the pitches as I hover a potential note over the staff - once I hear the pitch I need, I place it. This update to score editor removes that functionality - the pitch only sound when you actually place the note. (Dorico recently reintroduced this 'auditioning' of pitches, but the pitches that sound are diatonic rather than the whole chromatic spread. I need to hear all options chromatically). So I'll have to stick with the old cubase score editor. I guess I'm an idiot for this workflow, but it's seared into my bones since the days of Notator.
@jamietreacher8524 - Don't be silly... you're not an idiot; your workflow is your workflow.! Whatever makes you happy and creative is the main thing... I'd say, watch this space, as its only the first iteration of the new score editor and is bound to get more enhancements along the way... maybe post a comment on the forums about this, so it gets some attention...!?
@@25mileswest86 Thanks mate! Yeah, already posted on the forum where thankfully some devs engaged, so hopefully something might happen. It just seems that no one else has this problem! It seems everyone else who composes by ear uses piano-roll or plays it in. Those two don't work for me. I need to see the score, but I need to HEAR a pitch before I know it's the pitch that I want to add! Och well, fingers crossed in a knotty clench!
Still no folder buses. Cubase is probably the only DAW that doesn't have them at this point. And the folder tracks Cubase does have are not visible or usable in the mixer, which is super annoying. I like the way Logic handles folder buses. You can use them as a bus like other DAWs or as a multi-instrument. You put a bunch of different instruments on their own tracks that are summed to the folder and then just use one midi event directly on the folder bus to play them all.
We literally ungraded to v13 six weeks ago, I think we may have held off knowing this was on the horizon. I am guessing that there are no free upgrade licenses for people who have just upgraded to lessen the pain. Still, the Dorico integration makes it worth considering.
They do a grace period - if you bought C13 after October 9, 2024, then you get a free u/g to C14. If you bought before then, unfortunately you're out of luck and will need to buy the upgrade from C13>C14.
I got REALLY lucky. I decided to move back to Cubase after 8 years of Logic pro and bought version 13 online for half price. When I went to install it I realised that I had the option to upgrade to 14 for free because of....grace period blah blah. Anyway, I got 14 for half the price.
I used to do all my writing on a freeware composer called noteworthy composer and then export to midi. Then i pigeonholed myself into piano roll. I would really like to try this out and get out of the pianoroll box. Just upgraded to 14 artist... i feel like modulartors should have been in artist....
Guy, you never fail to put a smile on my face 😊
job done

Score editor makes no sense. Its incompatible to Musescore
The new features look insanely good. Is it stable?
The Score Editor and integration with Dorico is a game changer for me. Thanks for giving us a run thru, Guy!
I only hope the Steinberg will go the other way around, and let us import Dorico projects into Cubase Pro as well. That would be handy.

Good staff, but still not possible import pdf sheet music...?
No there are a couple of programmes which do that but not very well - its a hard thing to do
I know... but with all this new AI tecnology its strange they still cant do it....
I think this is confirmation your running a studio in a care home😂
you needed confirmation? 🤣
We literally ungraded to v13 six weeks ago, I think we may have held off knowing this was on the horizon. I am guessing that there are no free upgrade licenses for people who have just upgraded to lessen the pain. Still, the Dorico integration makes it worth considering.
There's normally a grace period but I dont know
They do a grace period - if you bought C13 after October 9, 2024, then you get a free u/g to C14.
