    Why they’re backwards? I'm only guessing, but I wonder if it had to do with the entertainment systems so they had to do less wiring by putting them all in "pods" so to speak?

      @@Paul_Lucas If you look at the tiny cubicle for your feet at 05:16
      You could see that those cubicle are trapezium in style. That's because half of them are being used for the other seat on the other side.
      So this configurations actually save them around 5"-10" of space for a row of seat.
      Again, it's also easier for them to wire the TV. But primarily for the save space design.

    If N210UA was your ride, that's a -222 built for United, not a -224 built for Continental. As a side note, that particular aircraft has sat dormant at SFO since August 23rd, assuming for maintenance, although they may have the ability to paint there as well.
    I recently did a LAX-DEN flight on N771UA, which is currently over 25 years old, and still kickin', line #3. Solid built aircraft!

For this aircraft it seemed the pratt and whitney engines were new or refurbished cause of the blue inside which is typically on newer pratt and whitneys

    Welcome and good bye to and from Denver. Sorry about the construction but good news is DIA and Denver just fired the contractor because of delays and cost overruns and the mess. @Lance .. sometimes the Contractor carrying out the works in not 100% responsible for delays. Other parties like the Client, Airport management, subcontractors or suppliers may contribute to delays too.
      and to appoint a new Contractor is not like at a snap of fingers, there's bound to be long lapse, before a new contractor is on the works, Also, expect some legal wrangle ( and financial consequences ) with the Contractor terminated..
      Well, construction contract can be complicated and need specialised lawyers to sort the mess out. Good luck.

      Like many airports construction "improvements" at DIA are perpetual. I can still remember the promised super automated baggage system when DIA was being built in the 1990s. It was supposed to be like the transport system Amazon uses to process orders today, but it just did not work when DIA first opened in 1995. They ended up reverting to the tried-and-true baggage cart system in the bowels of airport.

    A lot of military passenger aircraft have the seats facing backwards so that in the event of a crash landing you are thrown into the seat and not face first into the back of the seat in front of you.

    • @xxJohnxx77
      @xxJohnxx77 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Also the G-Load a human can survive is much higher backwards than forwards, which considerably helps in a crash as well.
      However, that's probably not the reason for the weird desing in the Business Class.

    • @bernardotorres6568

    • @WyattCieluch
      @WyattCieluch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Bernardo Torres yeah to keep you in your seat, the point he's making is that the forces upon impact would be more damaging with forward facing seats than backwards. Both still need seatbelts to keep you from flying out of your seat.
      Edit: seatbelts also attach at the waist so your upper body can still move and hit the seat in front

    • @bobbernstein8824
      @bobbernstein8824 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      simon whitlock Following that logic, though, all seats would face backwards, so that all passengers get the benefit. I am more inclined to accept the theory that it better accommodates the bulky IFE equipment of that build era.

      @jimtalor7971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's part of the "increase survivability portion" of the Business Class price located in the fine print. It's an obscure detail so as not to cause panic to the economy class folks who will try by force get a business class seat before a crash landing.

    On one trip from SFO to Frankfurt, we were flying First class and got seats in the bubble of a United 747 and they had a similar configuration of some seats facing backwards. The biggest pain about them was at take off, you were practically flung forward as those engines went to full and found yourself about to attempt an unwilling toe touch while the seatbelt kept you strapped in. Excellent service and crew who made it a memorable trip (my husband and I were off on our honeymoon).
    Glad you pointed out the wonderful tandoori chicken on UA! I had it a year ago when it was offered as "Butter Chicken" and those of us who ordered it were just raving about it (NB: I was suspicious but wasn't in the mood for whatever else was offered so, I went for it). The wonderful flight attendants working First warmed up the remaining servings and offered them as tastings to the other passengers who'd opted for whatever else was on the menu who also loved it. That is now my go to selection if I'm getting a meal and it's offered.

    There were plenty of airlines with rear-facing seats. Southwest had 2 rows of backwards facing seats on their 737-200s (Y of course). BA had backwards seats in their J long before UA did. In this case, the reason is the IFE set-up.
    This 777 seat was pretty comfy for its time. Their 767 seats were super narrow.

    My first experience with fois gras came on an Air France flight from SFO to Paris CDG in economy. It was just a little plastic tub like you see with butter, which I also had with the dinner roll. Ever since, I have loved the stuff. One time I went to a barbecue with coworkers and one brought - I am not kidding or exaggerating - a plastic bucket about a third full of fois gras (about 8 inches deep)! He also had 5 cases of champagne, and not cheap headache-juice but good Moet & Chandon White Star. I have no idea where he came by all this... We barbecued 5 chickens with the fois gras which we ate all night, doing multiple different recipes with it - melon & fois gras, garlic herb butter & fois gras on bread/crackers/by itself, fois gras on top of slices of beautiful New York Strip cooked rare, apple & fois gras, fois gras spiced with sage & paprika, fois gras with dill, garlic, & onion, just so many preparations. It was a full-on hedonistic Bacchanalia, especially after he brought out a sword and we started "sabering" the champagne to open the bottles, launching them over an 8-foot hedge.
    Good times for young Silicon Valley engineers...

    Great video! Note that your aircraft is N210UA which was originally delivered to United not Continental. United configured 2-4-2 in the late 2000s mainly for the IPTE conversion program which allowed for maximum use of space with the rear facing seats because they stacked backwards against the front seats ahead of them. And believe it or not, they are still in service on some international routes as well on the 777.

    Having been a UA elite flyer for years, I`ve flown 8 across in biz over the Atlantic. It was pretty normal for us. On the plus side: These seats are still more comfortable for sleeping than newer seats in other/better airlines. The downside of having forward & backward seats is that another passenger may be facing you in your field of vision.

    Hi, Paul! Great job, as always. The purpose of face mist is to keep the skin on your face hydrated. It's mostly women who do it; however, men are getting in on it, too. Your facial skin tends to be on the fragile side, and the air in the plane tends to be miserably dry. It can dry your face badly. By using a facial mist, you can replenish vitamins and minerals your skin needs so it will retain its elasticity, and not wrinkle. I use a thermal mineral water from France called Avene. It's wonderful!

Face Mist is supposed to make you look like George Clooney ( hate to tell you mate but it doesn't work !! ) This is at best Business Class to be honest and a positive review about United ? Well maybe they should put that in a museum along with the aircraft you flew in !! I have a feeling the seats you were in were very much the same as those on the 747 I flew in all those years ago !! Great review Paul and I always enjoy your material !! Safe travels mate !!

    I live in Cheyenne, Wyoming and I remember the weather that day. We didn't have many storms but we are an emergency divert field for flights coming into Denver. We had several United flights as well as Delta and Southwest crammed into our small little airport.

    The entertainment system made the rear-facing seats a necessity. And this was a sUA 777-an A-model, as it was called originally. With a shorter range, these were all converted to high-density seating for domestic flights, mostly hub-to-hub and Hawaii. They are also used to/from GUM and some shorter international routes.

      The only time I saw backward seats on a plane was on a cousin of your BOAC Comet: a BA (previously BEA) Trident 3 - which, by the way, was the most pleasant narrow-body I've ever flown on: very quiet, smooth, great seat. I flew it once STR-LHR and it was such a great flight that I still remember it fondly after all these years.

    I am going to SFO from LHR this week in Polaris and due to me being ignorant and not knowing the difference, my return flight was on a 777-200 with this configuration - so they still use it for transatlantic flights! Luckily, due to works on SFO runways, they gave me a fee waiver and I managed to rebook to get the 777-300 with new Polaris both ways! Can't wait.

    Another good review Paul. That meal was surprising for such a short flight. I have given up expecting any decent meal service on domestic flights in the U.S. I grab some food at the supermarket or prepare it myself before my flight. I always take extra in case my seatmate starts drooling looking at my picnic! I am just not comfortable eating next to someone who doesn't have anything to eat. I know it sounds totally weird but it's a great icebreaker on a long flight! LOL!

    I flew the United 777 2 from Newark to LAX three years ago and was in the backwards row/window. I did not mind it with exception of landing which I really enjoy watching from window but being backwards was odd. I do like the foot rest which does not bend you to the right as the United 757 business class will.

    Regarding the backwards facing seats: Others have already pointed out the safety benefit of flying in reverse. The other reason I've found these seats to be great is because you don't notice takeoff if you are preoccupied with something like watching a movie, reading or sleeping. It's very smooth feature that you may not expect.

    Just flew this Newark to LAX and it was truly a bizarre layout. But agree it was comfortable and the only logic I can see is that tv panels being back to back may be a space saver by combining wiring components. I don’t usually fly United but this is my second time this year and both flights were excellent with great in flight crew both times.

    My first time trying Dutch Beemster Royale cheese was aboard a KLM flight from AMS-YYZ 6 years ago. That was the cheese block they were serving as part of the Economy Class meals at the time. Simultaneously sweet and salty, I've craved it ever since, only having it a couple of times after that back home, given the relatively high cost for a small amount of Beemster.

    Paul, this 777 was a UA tail, not a CO tail. The principal difference is that UA‘s 777s are all PW powered; the CO 777s are all ER variants with the GE90 engine and have the pre merger BusinessFirst Cabins, which are currently being swapped out for the Polaris configuration.
    The 777A‘s are used on domestic long haul (mostly transcontinental and to/from Hawaii, since these aircraft have a range of about 5000nm). I suspect they will retain this configuration for the foreseeable future, since even with this 8 across configuration, it is still better than any other UA narrowbody seat (with the exception of some of the 757s flown b/t EWR and LAX/SFO.
    I flew this eight across Business Class 2 1/2 years ago, when the Polaris product was just being rolled out (soft product at that time). I flew it from ORD to SIN (with a stop in HKG) and the 15 hour flight was certainly pleasant enough, given that the Business and FIrst cabins were completely full, but even it took 21 hours to get to SIN and no matter what Business product, I was going to be trashed...and sure enough, I was.

    Hey Paul.,
    I happened to be surfing on TH-cam and came across your video on the EuroStar through the new direct Chunnel train trip to Amsterdam...I was hooked. I've watched many of your trips since.
    Anyway, I'm a Denver native and wondered how much time you've actually spent here. Have you been able to see the city and the state beyond? Colorado is indeed one of the jewels of the world.
    I'm 62 and disabled now so I don't fly much, but I did take a trip to Houston in June of 2018. I flew Spirit and used the "First Class" seating option just as you did when you flew the airline awhile back. The extra room was great (I'm 6 ft with very long legs and big feet), and like you I found the flight staff very courteous and attentive. They went out of their way to get me a wheelchair so I wouldn't have to walk through IAH in Houston and the huge expanse that is DIA on the return trip.
    Keep up the good work of informing people around the world of your flying experiences!

To me the total experience on United or any legacy first class in the US seems so... inconsistent. Depending on time flown, time of day, aircraft, hub, etc. you get such a different experience. Seems like a shame to me.

    Back in 2001, I flew United long-haul (GRU-ORD and back) on a 777-200 (not ER yet). I was in economy (not bad, really) and it was 9-across (2-5-2). Even 18 years ago, it would be hard for me to imagine only one seat less across in business class. I passed through the business-class area when boarding and deboarding, but I don't remember how it was. It was probably a different configuration, as your plane came from Continental and that was before their merger, but still, I'd say that this configuration would be substandard for business class even then.

    Just flew on this product between Chicago and Honolulu. I was wondering about the logic of the rear facing seats until my wife who’s not an AVgeek for the record, mentioned what sounded like a plausible reason to me. If you notice the inflight entertainment/station thing likely mandates the rear facing design. As each station hosts two forward and two backward facing screens.

    Having seats facing each other allows a few inches of nesting. Look down to where the small foot areas are when in lay flat mode and you’ll see 5-6” worth they squeezed out of seat pitch. I’ve flown backwards a number of times and actually prefer it. On a transpacific flight, backwards helps put your head a bit above your feet. It is a bit strange at takeoff and landing, but with the windows shut, you don’t really know flight direction other than the incline of the aisle.

  • @TexMexTraveler
    @TexMexTraveler 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey great video, love watching your travels. Just thought I'd give you some info about why some seats are backwards and aircraft info. This aircraft, registration # N210UA is a "sub-United" aircraft, meaning it was delivered to United Airlines in 2000, not Continental. This is demonstrated by the last 2 digits of the registration number being UA for United Airlines whereas other United current aircraft that were previously "sub-continental" do not have UA as the last 2 digits, instead just randomly assigned digits, this information can also be fact checked on the United fleet tracking website. As for rear facing seating, it was an attempt in 1998 to save space and weight. You'll notice all of the in-flight monitors are back to back of each other, this makes a more efficient design layout for the equipment and wiring and saves an extra 6 inches per row. At the time it was thought to be a good idea, but has obviously become a not so good idea.

    🙋🏼‍♂️I know! The seat layout actually does save a *little* bit of space. The unit that holds the foot rests kind of ‘nests’ the feet of the seats on either side of it. So that space serves for 4 seats (at windows) or 8 seats (in center). I imagine that back when it was new 8 across lay-flat was innovative compared to 7 across angled...?

  • @Bruce-yv9tm
    @Bruce-yv9tm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The footwells are small so they can put them slightly side by side which tessellates them, meaning a more efficient use of space
