That's your opinion and everyone is entitled to have one, that's the beauty of freedom. Although you should keep it for yourself sometimes, and that's one of them.
Buckethead writes the most beautiful music ever. One of his best attributes is his compositional skills, so it confuses me how you say he has no melody lmao...
Buckethead is a phenomenal musician, I can't think of anyone else like him. Not only is he one of the most prolific artists out there, he's also an amazing performer, AND a talented composer. The downside of having 550+ solo albums and tons of collaborations is that your material seems overwhelming for people to get through. You really have to dig in order to find something you enjoy since Buckethead is so versatile. If you want melodic stuff, listen to Scraps, Binge and Grab, Welcome to Bucketheadland, Ghost Host, Nottingham Lace, and The Rising Sun. the list goes on and on, but that should be enough to get you started ;) Love your videos and appreciate your honest takes, keep it up my friend!
Hi Justin! I discovered your channel through Buckethead reaction videos and I really enjoy your content and opinions about music. Since I’m not a musician I’m sure I don’t understand the term (melody) as you do. You have stated repeatedly that there is no melody in Bucketheads music. You also stated that Buckethead is not a good composer, but I think most of the fans including myself would argue that he most definitely is a great composer. Of course Buckethead is more widely known as a shredder which is mostly what you will find in his live performances. If you want to understand why some of us love this guy’s music you’ll have to dive deeper into his recordings. Will you find the melodies that you’re looking for? I’m not sure you will. I’m certainly not trying to convince you to like his music, but you have mentioned that you would like to understand why people do. All we can do is offer suggestions which I will do now. Not saying that these contain melodies just a few of my favorites that I would like to see your reaction too. If you’re so inclined pick one! Far 5, The Patrolman, Disintegration Mirrors, Fastpass, Eerie Canal. Really Enjoy your reactions! Looking forward to the next one!!!
Free forming is what him and Travis Dickerson were going for with the Population Override album, the whole album was one long jam session, it's no different than jazz players free forming...BTW, you're right, this was "not meant for the masses" and it was also not meant to have a "hook" or "catchy riff" for the top 40 radio scene either, it's just pure emotion turned into musical form.
Really like that youre giving criticism with no bias. I do love Buckethead but no artist is immune to being criticized. Enjoying this content and hopefully you find at least 1 song of his that you really like. Can I suggest Binge and Grab, this was a song from when he was in Deli Creeps and it used to have lyrics back then, he released an instrumental version on his album (Giant Robot). Maybe you can also check out Andrew Henrys Meadow, Big D's Touch, and Dawn appears. These are my favorites from his more mellow songs.
Lol you clearly haven’t listened to too much Buckethead. Tons of albums with melody and just riffs no solos really. Here’s a few-Hollowed Out, Unexpected Journey, Deli Creeps, View Master. A lot more too considering he has over 400 albums
I get it., Riffs don't necessarily make a melody you can hum later. you may need to listen to Pike 65 in your own time. It is long. It is essentially an exercise in melodic presentation and exploration., The bucket is very regimented in his compositions, but the melody you are comfortable with may lie in the depths of Piike 65 :Hold Me Forever. Give the guy a shot here. Be aware that pike 65 is essentially two parts, melodic exploration, then a ridiculously long speed solo. You've got 23 minutes somewhere, right?
Agree. Love buckethead and he’s amazing but a lot of his stuff is like this. He does have stuff with melodies. Names escape me other than one called Sled Ride. Only reason I remember it is because I got the album around Xmas time years ago. Lol. Even shredders like John Petrucci will have an underlying melody with all his solo stuff before going into his crazy solo work. And then comes back to that melody. So I get what you are saying.
I have some songs for you with a more "normal" structure and great melodies. Plantination Station, Lotus Island, Monument Valley, Crack the Sky, Lurker at the Threshold(all parts), Ghost host. Cant go wrong with any of them
Hello justin! I’ve been checking out your reactions on buckethead. And I hear your criticism about buckets luck of melody, but as you said in this video your definition of melody is “something catchy”, and you don’t hear anything like this in buckets music. First of all: buckethead has catchy melodies, riffs etc, you already heard Nottingham lace for example but the thing is people really do want to see bucket shred on his live shows, he just doesn’t play any of his song the same way on any of these shows, that’s why you couldn’t comprehend the so called “melody” of Nottingham lace for example or “for mom”. you literally can sing these songs with just your mouth and everybody will recognise these songs. And second: not every song should have this “catchy” melody thing and bucket knows that and experiments a lot. If you played guitar for a while you should know how hard it is to make music while “just soloing” over backing track and make it sound beautiful.
There are so many melodies in his songs. What kind of a person you are. 😒 Check out his other songs. His nuances as a guitar player I don't find in modern day guitar players.
You would appreciate original studio versions of Siege Engine (from Albino Slug) and/or Nottingham Lace (from Enter the Chicken). Both have excellent "melodies" that come and go throughout like a chorus. There are many others.

I understand your statement. Quite a few of his pieces are'playing over the changes' . His more acoustic songs are more melodic, so try Whitewash, Watching the boats with my Dad, Padasama, or All in the waiting. I have seen him solo and with other musicians live and his dynamism and variations are akin to great jazz players. The melody is implied rather than being overt. Tomato, Tomawto
Pondering over what you are saying, I think you would really enjoy the song Botnus. This is a proper metal song with vocals, shredding and has a more normal flowing structure. Just make sure to listen to the version from the album Enter the Chicken (that's the one with the vocals). For more rock I would suggest one of his first bands Deli Creeps that have many great songs like Time, which can rival any rock ballad. Or the song Bend Up which sounds like something Tenacious D would play.
i'm not sure what you mean by 'melodies'. to me, this is extremely melodic. do you simply mean a repeating melodic line? buckethead rarely repeats lines. or riffs for that matter
I like your take on this song but, think of the song as a journey never going back to the same place. There was no room for melodies you would just be retracing your steps.

Population Override is such an amazing album. It is meant to be listened to from start to finish. Sublime.

Dude pike 65 will change your mind for sure. Back story is he wrote that song for his mom that passed away.

I fall asleep to monument valley all the time. Electric Tears is another favorite to fall asleep to.
