Man, I remember in the 80's this song 'Conga' was playing EVERYWHERE from Miami to South Asia and beyond... Gloria Estefan brought the sound of Cuba to the world and became a superstar w/ songs like 'Rhythm is gonna get you'... "1,2,3" ... "Don't wanna lose you" ... 'Anything for you'... 'Turn the beat around'... 🔥🔥
Gloria was discovered by her husband Emilio Estefan... she became the lead singer in his band Miami Sound Machine... They are one of the few famous couples who have stayed married & together...

They were one of the bands playing during closing ceremonies for the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. I was a volunteer usher in Olympic Stadium, and during the rehearsal that afternoon, several of us were standing by one of the tunnels where all the mini-stages on wheels were bringing in the performers & got to see her up close. She was so friendly! She's a really cool person who's done a lot with her money and fame to help others.

In 1986 they performed at Steamboat Days in Burlington, IA, which was about an hour and a half drive from where we live. Wife and I went with another couple and were in the crowd. They are famous for their Conga line dance while performing this song. During this show, Guiness Book of Records people were there and Officially confirmed the the Conga line at that show "was the official Record conga line " with just over 11,000 people doing the Conga at one time. Gloria led the line through the crowd and at one time passed within about 3 feet of where we stood. WHAT A MEMORY "Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, who will perform tonight before a sold out house at the State Theatre in Easton, have been at the head of quite a few conga lines in their time, but never like the one they led at Burlington, Iowa.

This was the first of many wonderful hits for Gloria and her husband. They are like royalty in S. Florida. Right now she can be seen on TV in the new version of Father of the Bride.

First of all, let me say both my husband and I love your show! I believe this is the first time I actually post a comment.
I am Cuban, born in the island but for obvious reasons left in 1962 at the age of 4. One thing I can tell you about Cubans is besides the fact that we are loud, among other things, is that we have music and dance in out soul. It is part of who we are. Our music is a mix of Spanish melody, and the vibrant African beats and drumming.
Conga was derived from the Cuban carnival dance of the same name. The dancers form a long, processing line, which would usually turn into a circle. The basic dance steps start from left leg 1-2-3 kick then repeat, opposite.
I guarantee you that if you go to a Cuban party, and at some point, you’ll end up in a conga line.
Gloria and Emilio Estefan, both Cuban immigrants to this great country are one of those wonderful success stories of two hard working people pursuing the American dream. They have become one of the most powerful couples in the music industry.
Miami Sound Machine went through many transitions, started out as The Miami Latin Boys, Gloria joined, and Miami Sound Machine was born. Oh, of course, they fall in love and get married...
After years being successful in the Latin American market, Gloria and Emilio with the input of some of their band members come up with this idea of imparting part of our Cuban flavor to pop music. A new record is released using this concept in which this song Conga is included, and the rest is history.
Their biggest accomplishments however, are their son Nayib, producer and director and their daughter Emily a very talented singer, musician and producer. I am including a link to a performance she did honoring her parents at The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize several years ago.

Me too! I loved her and Expose, both of whom I saw live back in the 80s! Living in Miami back then, watching Miami Vice filmed too - what an amazing time! I am sorry to hear that you lost so much during Andrew! We were lucky - our house was okay (without power for a bit; my cousin was out of power for a lONG time). My dad did get very sick from the debris and crap in the air afterward and was in the hospital at Jackson Memorial for nearly a month and they couldn't do anything until they figured it out. He couldn't eat, was losing such weight and was just stuck in the hospital. :-(

thank you. been waiting for y'all to react to this song. :) happy y'all enjoyed it. and yes this old dog lived in Miami in the 80s. even seen The Miami Sound Machine before they became a US billboard top 40 hit. most of their music were and are hits in Latin America. the majority of their music is in Spanish. but that still did not stop me from enjoying the music parts. yes lived in Miami and can only speak and understand a hand full of words in Spanish. but thats on me. no Miami is not the same look as it was in the 80s. then Miami only had one real skyscraper at the time, now there are dozens in the downtown area. if you want to see how the Miami skyline has changed, you can see it the old "Flipper" tv show, from time to time , that was filmed at the Miami Seaquarium. not a skyline you could see from miles out at sea as you can now. the tallest building before is what is now called "The Freedom Tower."

Salsa flavored music, Cubano with Janet Jackson and Sheila E influences as well Many artists looked up to Janet and Sheila E at the time. Check out more of their songs. Check out videos for "1-2-3", "Rhythm is Gonna get You", "Bad Boys". They were very successful during the '80s and then Gloria went solo during the '90s, also some good hits from her solo career, check those out.
Lex loved this? She will really like freestyle music! Pretty similar to this. Freestyle music is Latin flavored hip hop sounds with singing melodies, electronics sounds, during the '80s and '90s.

In March of 1990 Estefan, 63, was napping when an 18-wheeler rear-ended her tour bus, which she says "felt like an explosion," and threw her to the floor. I am looking around, and it is mayhem," she recalls. "Emilio is over me, wild-eyed, screaming, 'Are you OK?' He's covered in blood." The Cuban-born songstress says she knew she broke her back. "I tried to get up," she says. "I had the taste of electricity in my mouth, that's the only way I can describe it. The pain was excruciating." Emilio fainted upon learning his wife's suspicions were confirmed: Her back was indeed broken. He feared she wouldn't regain the use of her legs and was told she would no longer be able to have children. (Both those notions were incorrect. Estefan can walk, and daughter Emily arrived in 1994.)

My sister was in a dance school (k - 12) and their group (advanced high school) had one to this song for a competition in South Florida. They found out through the grape vine (after arriving) the judges were sick of seeing dance routines to this song. It had been a hit the year before. So they frantically a couple of days before tried to do it to another song. We were there a few days. Anyway they just ended up doing it to this song after all.

One of the funnest concerts I ever experienced! The audience was on its feet from the very first number until the last encore, even during the occasional slow number/ballad! What a blast!

I remember an interview with Gloria saying they were big in South America and almost unheard of in the US, she said they would go to South America and play to 10,000 ppl and go back to the States and do weddings and parties, not for long Im guessing
