    Been playing guitar for over a decade without learning theory and have started to scratch the surface and dedicate some mental time to trying to pick out patterns in music, sort of test the waters before I go and buy some books. These two videos are a monumental help for my songwriting. Theory is this mountain of intimidation.

    • @DevGohil
      @DevGohil  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Theory can be daunting, if taught correctly it's fairly easy to pick up :)

    • @mlugin8050
      @mlugin8050 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah i also stopped playing some 10 years ago and gave it a go 1 year ago and i stick to it. I couldn‘t get how scales work and wgat to do with intervals. Got so bored with pentatonics. I bought a new book to learn scales, start with the major scale. Everything else in theory is in that scale (even the evil scales😂) go by the book first, when it‘s boring , noodle around with what you learned before you stop. Try the scale you learn on every single scale and from any point. At some point you start to hear and instnctively know if the next tone is 1 or two steps further or behind. In a half decent book there is also a description of the modes. That‘s another brainf“§&in the beginning.
      If you learn other scales, you‘ll see it‘s all based on the major scale, but with less notes. The hard thing is to have a practicing routine.
      1st practice a scale. Over and over. Then try to shift in between the positions. Play the root note every now and then. Amajor play the A string to hear it.
      2nd end practicing with playing along some youtube videos like that. If you skip the first part, you make music but you won‘t know why. I really needed to learn that the hard way. Also i stopped using tabs mostly (only for chords and scales theory)

    what kind of theory goes into your decisions for improvising or writing diatonic riffs? I always end up playing the same shit and I get stuck just using two strings instead of moving to higher strings to make it more varied.

    • @garrettlemieux4620
      @garrettlemieux4620 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically how do you write Dissection riffs haha. Maybe you could make a theory video?

    • @DevGohil
      @DevGohil  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Long story short - Use more than two strings, fully learn how to build chords in major/minor scales by stacking up the 3rds. A shortcut to learn Dissection style riffs is to learn Dissection's riffs and learn the scales and notes used plus when and where, because they go from Diatonic to Atonal/Harmonic Minor/Phrygian etc etc.
      I will be making videos about theory for sure, give me some time, crazy busy these days
