I like how you can hear the distortion from the amp but you can also hear the straight strumming of the strings, because it actually sounds like a background acoustic, which fits well with the riff. It gives it a very naturalistic sound, which is a big part of black metal, that it can sound at the same time scary/claustrophic and epic/organic. It's a music of the earth itself.
You are my favorite Black Metal guitar teacher on youtube. And not just BM, I think Ive watched every video of every genre you have on your channel. You're truly gifted.
Been watching some of your videos here on TH-cam for the past couple of days and it's really motivating me to pick up the guitar again. I haven't seen any videos that are this clear and structures without becoming boring. Straight to the point and no bloody wanking about! I'll be buying some of the volumes off your website tonight.
Early Emperor loved this rhythm. It shows up all over Wrath of the Tyrant and In the Nightside Eclipse. I half-expected you to start playing "Ancient Queen."
Try economy of movement, ie: the smallest movements you can instead of large up and down strokes and above all relax. Don't let your arm tense up. I pic from my wrist, not my arm and can tremolo pic for over an hour once warmed up with no difficulty.
Thanks for the upload, good lesson. :P I've actually had a lot of these ideas in my head, but this sort of crystallized them. Thanks for the new ideas. Keep it up. :)
Hi I really appreciate you doing these black metal videos. Black metal can be a difficult sound to pick up especially for beginners. I wish I would of had these about 2 years ago haha. BTW PEOPLE a perfect example of what he is teaching here is a lesser known song from Burzum called Erblickte Die Töchter Des Fermaments or in English (Beholding the Daughters of the Firmament) . You can also hear this in many DSBM bands. Good Luck!
Wow!! Very useful video!!! Feel comfortable playing black metal now!! You made it seem so easy!! Been watching you for a few years now... Again, sorry about your hearing loss.. i hope it gets better for you..!! Thanks again mate.. From Brisbane
I know you're asking for his advice and not mine, but I find it helps to think of your wrist as kind of a "whip." Like, stay relaxed, keep your wrist loose, and just barely move your arm so that it kind of "drags" your wrist with it.
well there is no set way to play any music really but he's making it easier for people who want to start playing black metal and dont know exactly how some of it is played. this is ment as more of an example and not telling us to copy these riffs or anything. it's always nice to get an idea of how things are payed if we don't know, you could try to find notes by ear without a video example but this is a lot easier ya know? this generation really has a lot easier time learning with youtube lol
A couple of good examples of this type of playing would be Gris/Niflheim and Sterbend. I started taking lessons recently and learned all about these techniques. Once i understood them i understood a large part of how Black Metal guitar is created. It's so good to progress! Good vids tho.
@lllorez Sextuplet and triplet rhythms are good for building stamina. What you speak of just means you need more time and practice to be able to play relaxed. It's really just practice, patience and time. I get the same thing when I over do it.
Thanks for the vid. Your strums sound so think and heavy. Can I ask, do you have any good advice for building up speed for strumming across multiple strings, black metal style? Whenever I start trying to go faster I get stuck at a point were I'm fighting myself between really letting my whole arm get into it or, try and keep everything still and do all of the work from my wrist. What should the feeling be like and what should I do the build up speed for that but still have good clear strums
I just noticed watching this again that you're picking the chords over the 22nd fret on the neck. Kinda different and interesting since most metal players pick between the humbuckers.
the tone is called devil tone its when u hitting notes that makes an earie athmosphere like typical horror movies or demonic sound'ish in backround like if u mix it with the noise of wind and raspy scream it would sound kinda demonic
do you have anything on melodeath lessons such as things involving harmonic minor/Phrygian modes and tips for better construction of the song as a whole? i just found your channel so if you can let me know about a title to look up id be very grateful.
The style in this reminds me a lot of a canadian folk/pagan black metal project called Dark Forest. I say project because it's one guy, it's not literally a band.
Go for pretty much anything with active pickups mate. They give a much stronger or brighter tone. Schecter Omen series is a winner for what they cost. My opinion anyway!!

For some reason black metal sounds really cool when played on unplugged electric guitar

Your tone is so clear but evil. I love it. Great lesson.

Me too ♥

NOT BLACK METAL
0:47 Sounds like the beginning of I am the Black Wizards by Emperor
It's just an open power chord though, that statement is incredibly vague...
It totally sounds like the Emperor song. Apparently YOU'VE never heard the song.
Doom or be Doomed In the Nightside Eclipse was one of the first black metal records I ever heard.
+Stratosfear the God that's cool, but it was originally on the Hordanes Land split with Enslaved.
Doom or be Doomed Indeed
Your explanations of the technical vocabulary on top of the visuals made this video truly helpful. Thank you!
WE HAVE THE EXACT SAME TATTOO ON THE EXACT SAME ARM IN SAME POSITION, WEIRD

Wow, your videos are awesome!
I haven't been into this kind of metal for long, but this has really helped! Thanks.
Sounds really good!!

I know it's not the important thing here, but cool green lantern shirt!
great lessons to, keep on riffing!
These are some great lessons and that SG is sharp.
Thanks for the upload, good lesson. :P I've actually had a lot of these ideas in my head, but this sort of crystallized them. Thanks for the new ideas. Keep it up. :)

I can't be the only one to think that 1:04 , when he shows what the strumming pattern sounds like, sounds BAD ASS.
This is pretty wicked
This is sheer magnificence!
Golgori Swarm I see.
Kodanshi Helcarver I see you play Golgari. I do too.
Excellent!!! Thanks.
awsome once again
A fellow SG player! I've always felt that the SG isn't the most death/black metal guitar out there, but it certainly works for me!
@@mark7166 all you need is six strings.
I immediately thought you were gonna play "I am the Black Wizards" when you did the opening two chords
I know you're asking for his advice and not mine, but I find it helps to think of your wrist as kind of a "whip." Like, stay relaxed, keep your wrist loose, and just barely move your arm so that it kind of "drags" your wrist with it.
Bad ass take away😍💥💯🤟thanks a lot.additional ammo for my beginner Hard Metal repertoire.🤩
You see "Black Metal" in the tile, and then a SG and think "OK, this might be horrible..." until THAT tone comes out! Holy shitfuck! Well done, sir!
Euronymous used sg so maybe this guy poses for him.
New fan that came over from MHH show!
1:05 they're beautiful people...they're beautiful people

@abyssalproductions666 5 years later I stumble across this video to see that I was corrected lol 🍻

I second this. The first Korn album was amazing in it's time.
thanks for the lesson :)
thats good advice
Good lesson, like it!
Yeah, possibly. Used to love Korn's first album.
Mainly the CafePress website, but the Green Lantern shirt was purchased at my local Target store.
Just wondering if you could do a video about creating the black metal sound. And how to fine tune your sound.
It reminds me of mose from the office
Cheers!
Nice Primordial kind of rhythm
I remember when I played shit like this. When I was 15 and had been playing guitar for a few months.
Sounds a lot like Burzum
great stuff

There's a video called Phrygian Improv Techniques but that deals with lead guitar technique. It still might be useful.
might I ask what amp and or distortion pedals you are using for you tone?
can you do a lesson on melodic death metal? such as Dark Tranquility, in flames ect
Well, it's still useful as it changes things up a little.
That sound... holy shit
The style in this reminds me a lot of a canadian folk/pagan black metal project called Dark Forest.
I say project because it's one guy, it's not literally a band.
is he got two horns on the head and arrow tail?
CLASSIC VID DOES THIS GUY HAVE A BAND

이거 보고 연습했습니다~ 어두운 느낌을 연주하고 싶어서요
