Hi Nigel, the right moment to get good tips from you in handling foregrounds using a wide angle lens. A few months ago I bought a Z6III and a Z 6 17-28 mm F2.8 lens. This lens was a real discovery of experimenting with perspectives, as I normally use the Z6 and the Z 24-70 f4, and the Z 24-200 f 4-6.3. Your story now confirms my interest in widening perspectives by going closer to the foreground and telling othere stories with my landscape images. Bert.
One of the first lenses I bought for my Z7 was a 14-30 because I thought that's what I needed for landscape photography. So far, it has been my least used lens. I can't afford much, so I also have a 24-200, which I use quite a bit. I was thinking about trading the 14-30 for something else, but this video has convinced me to go out and use only the 14-30 for a while. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.
One of the best videos I've seen on achieving wide angle compositions. Thanks Nigel. With regard to your last comments about dead space and cropping - would you ever consider using Transform to keep the wide angle feel while cropping?

I'm thankful for all the effort you put in your videos, I've learnt so much from this channel. And I don't shoot Hasselblad or Nikon.
It is called ‘free speech’ and simple observation. Have you not noticed how many TH-cam photographers have suddenly been loaned a Hasselblad to use? It is a camera way outside the pockets of most people who watch these channels. It is a shame that the photographers don’t concentrate on producing videos that improve people’s photography more, rather than using gear which the majority cannot afford. Having said that, Nigel Danson is not particularly ‘gear’ oriented, but as a general rule, critical comments are valid.
@@petercollins7848 I certainly have noticed that, but it doesn't bother me AT ALL. Why would it matter that they use a camera most people will never own? The exact same compositions and theories can be applied to whatever camera or brand you use. Stop focusing so much on gear, cause it doesn't matter for crying out loud. To me it looks like all these comment sections get infested by jealous whiners, for no reason. Anyone who's given a new Hasselblad will obviously use it, I would too.
@@edc641 Yes you are right, it doesn’t bother YOU at all. But what you are trying to do is restrict other people’s opinions. If you cannot see that then I am sorry for you. That is what ‘comments’ are all about, not sycophantic agreement with everything the video says.
@@petercollins7848 I'm not restricting anyone's opinion. But I'd like to hear why it's a problem that a certain camera model is used that a lot of people can't afford? So far no explanation on what the problem actually is? Some people can't afford the Z8 Nigel is using constantly in his videos. No whining about that, but as soon as the Hasselblad was introduced people turn into children, crying like crazy. It's hilarious, that camera is "out of reach" for me too but I just don't see what the problem is!? It's like people think you need to have the Hasselblad to be able to understand what Nigel's saying? Unless you own that model you have no use of his videos? It's absolutely ridiculous.
@@edc641 No it isn’t! TH-cam photographers make a lot of money, and seem to be able to buy ridiculously expensive cameras or get them given to them. They pretend that they are making videos to help us with our hobby with our modest equipment, but it is all a front to expand their subscribers and income. Personally I am sick of it and I am going unsubscribe to most of those I have been following for years. I will only watch those who actually believe in taking ‘photographs’ and not producing a comedy video or introducing, yet again, 5 more ‘tricks’ to help us take photos!
Enjoyed the video and its tip on composition however, you mentioned early on in the video ap-c cameras and your Z8 and how you were going to show the differences on focus and depth of field but didn't unless I missed it...apologies if I did. 😮
Another Hasselblad video. I suppose Hasselblad is doing a media blitz with all the landscape photographers. I'm sorry, that camera will never be in my budget. As I mentioned, medium format is different shooting than full frame. Don't get me wrong. I love your videos but I relate better to your Nikon full frame.
Last year it was Nikon and everybody started shooting those... IQDS - Image Quality derangement Syndrome. A 40mp APS-C will print fine art quality at 300dpi to 17x22. Anything more is wasted.
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography Since he is a Nikon Ambassador I'm quite surprised he's featuring a Hasselblad. Since I've seen quite a few landscape photographers showcasing this Hasselblad lately it appears it's a media blitz by Hasselblad. From what I hear about being a Nikon Ambassador from another professional photographer I am really surprised about this. The pro I'm referring to refused to be a Nikon Ambassador as he wanted to try different cameras and do videos about them. He, in his own words, didn't want to be stuck with just showcasing Nikon. Could it be that Nigel's relationship with Nikon has ended or is ending?
I enjoyed your video and found the guidance very helpful for my wide angle photography. Wouldn't it be great if Nikon could produce a medium format camera which Z mount lens could be fitted and was reasonably-priced 😀
I find that it's a struggle to get a picture of a good foreground leading into a great landscape, rather than a photo of the foreground, but with a pleasant backdrop. If the foreground becomes the subject then it ends up as a photo of a rock/branch etc that underplays the incredible vista behind it.
Keep up with the tips and advice which we can apply - whatever camera we use. Useful advice to encourage more use of my wide lens rather than hug my 70-200 endlessly 😂
Did I miss the APSC bit? Being drawn more towards TH-camrs like Henry and Ian as it’s more relatable and real world with affordable kit. I could spend four times the amount I have on a Hasselblad Earth but my results wouldn’t be four times better or more importantly, my overall enjoyment so I don’t know whether to laugh at or feel sorry for photographers who delude themselves that they will. Very informative video but think I’ll stick to my 70-200mm where I can pick out the best bits in a scene and use the compression to suck in all the goodness.
Keep it real. What do you shoot when Hasselblad and Nikon DONT send you free gear??? Ian, Henry and Andy Mumford have some integrity for sure, AOWS is another Photographer I respect.
Hi Nigel, thanks for another great and informative video! You mentioned aspect ratio. I am interested how you select it: in the field or during editing. Do you prefer certain aspect ratios for specific subjects? Do you only use the standard aspect ratios like 3:4 or 2:3 or do you freely select it? I would appreciate if you tell a little bit about this.
That was very helpful and well explained, if only I had see this a week ago when wandering around Swaledale where there were loads of waterfalls and old mine workings. P.S regarding your woodland LUT’s have you ever considered doing them for other non ADOBE applications such as DXO?
I realize that you need all of the DR you can muster in your location. It would be a great test for you and those of us who only have a Z9/Z8 to see the difference. We're all photographers of the environment we live in. I wouldn't want to be the type of photographer who needs to fly around the world for 'the shot'! So many live on the backs of other taxpayers.
Good tips. Nice use of the phone. That looks like a SF Giants hat, Ive seen you a few different ones eith the same logo. You're obviously not in San Francisco so I'm curious whats the deal with thise hats?
What is it these days that everyone is shooting Hasselblad at the moment? At least people I follow like you Nigel, Thomas Heaton, Gavin Hardcastle, etc... Always a big fan of yours when it comes to technique and composition but sometimes a bit confused when it comes to different camera gear...
I’m just curious, those of you who are so upset about the Hasselblads, do you stop watching your favorite sports figure when they get top of the line equipment? I’m thinking probably not. So, why be so upset when these pro photographers get top notch gear? Again, just curious. I know that if someone gave me the same clubs as Tiger Woods, I wouldn’t be able to play like him. The equipment doesn’t make the athlete just as it doesn’t make the photographer. Dedication, passion and hard work make the individuals who they are in their field. Not the equipment. Would it be nice? Yes. But it’s not a necessity. These TH-camrs work hard to put out videos, they’ve earned the recognition. I’m sure I will get lambasted for my opinion, but I am allowed to have one. Thanks for the great video Nigel!!
@@timothykieperWhile I do agree with you on the sports field being way, way overpaid, I can’t say that I agree with your sentiment in this situation. These guys are just trying to make a living while at the same time providing us with education in the photography field, at no cost to us. If you go to a sports event, (which I don’t) it is anything but free. I see it as though these guys are getting paid from sponsors/vendors instead of us as viewers. Thanks for the reply. 🙂
Mate I'm a lad from a background that doesn't suit the average landscape photographer I'm not amazing and magical at what I try to do. But I'm a joiner and when I listen to podcasts the mass majority of worldwide people who enjoy it from a from more office based High income end of the world. And that doesn't bother me. I have a canon 80d some lenses and just crack on. I should feel like a underdog watching listing pods vlogs etc but then I think I build the houses buildings that everyone has a poo in.😂 never get down just change angles buddy. ❤
The fist shot is perfect! I think we can overthink shots too much. It would be great on any media advertising the Lake District. So many wide-angle shots overemphasise the foreground and look weird, your first shot looks ‘normal’ - just as you almost might see it with your eyes. But overall the video makes us focus on composition, which is the most important thing in a pleasing photo. And as another comment has said, “please, no more Hasselblads”!
Well done for gaining support from Hasselblad. I fully understand that TH-cam and photography is your job providing you and your family with the income that this provides…. However I no longer see the point in watching vlogs using high ticket items such as Hassleblad XD2’s or whatever. The explorer is roughly £12750.00, add the lens you’re talking about then add on another £6500.00. So getting advice on using £19500.00 worth of kit is a bit pointless for the vast majority.
I would like to know if you can keep the Hasselblad lens? Some famous TH-cam photographers got Hasselblad gear for free in the the last weeks. So Anthony Gugliotta (unboxing my dream camera). He communicated clearly that he could keep the Hasselblad camera, etc. If that‘s in your case the same, I think we should know for transparency reasons.
I have the X2D with the XCD25V lens which is awesome! I have the longer XCD lenses too, and don't see a need for the short zoom. prove me wrong ! Was that an iPhone app that you were using?
I’m not worried about the Hasselblad. It’s unlikely I’ll ever be splashing out on a Z8 never mind a Hasselblad but I haven’t heard too many complaints about photographers using high end full frame cameras, it’s just what you’d expect a pro to be using. I think it’s interesting to learn about different cameras and formats even if I’m not using them myself and I think Nigel’s tips are very helpful and would apply whatever camera you are using. But Nigel you did say something at the beginning about mentioning differences in focus between medium format, full frame and APS-C which would have been interesting and I don’t think you actually covered it later.
Oh dear another "ive got a Hasselblad" video. How do so many so called 'expert' photographers fall for Hasselblads marketing? Hasselblad have worked out how shallow so many photographer are. Nikon must be real please with their ambassadors.
I'm guessing that as he set up and sold a software company he doesn't need to be gifted very much at all. If I could afford one I'd get one too cos they are just so beautiful.
@@whitehorseflyer I'm sure you're right. My comment was not intended as a pop at Nigel. who I respect, but I can see it reads that way, so I'll delete it.
Not the gear, it's the process. Either YOU are inspired & entertained or not. ●These TH-camrs could be using a NASA camera or a Phone & it would still require 'the process & eye'
He did not at any point of the video promote the camera. He just used it as a starter to explain the wide angle format... So this is absolutely ok. You may do it with any 14mm equivalent 😊
Cameras that list at $8k without a lens are a definite turnoff. When Danson, Gibbs, Heaton, et al were using high end but affordable digital cameras, their videos were much more interesting. Anyway, thanks for many useful tips over the years but I won't be tuning in going forward.
Much the same as what Leica are doing in providing several street photographers with cameras these days, so unfortunately in most cases the video becomes much more about the camera and lens rather than the creativity.
Because we can all relate to having a Hasselblad and associated lenses. Sorry but most TH-cam photographers are getting really boring, formulaic and repetitive now. But anyway thank you to MPB/Squarespace for sponsoring all of this.
Blad over priced, just paying for a name. Don't spoil your channel with tech Nigel. Strange a few other photographers on you tube all of a sudden have hasselblad cameras and starting to use them. A few promo give aways lads
Sorry Nigel. Unsubscribing as you have lost relevance for me with this ridiculous high end camera. Thomas Heaton and Fototripper have also made the same stupid mistake of becoming a shill for Hassy.
@@tristanjacobs6003 nope I love the shots. I dislike the inference that I need this camera to do the same. I’ve loved Nigel’s images for years. Met him in person even. I simply don’t like the current trend of TH-cam photographers falling foul of the advertising dollars of a high end camera company. It leaves you wondering what the motivation is.
@@paulbarnard5267It’s completely fair that you only want to watch photographers with the same level of gear as you own, but don’t blame the photographers - who in their right mind would say no to that offer, especially someone who lives of photography? 😅 I feel both fototripper, Thomas Heaton, etc. have been extremely humble about the situation and that none of them have implied that you need the same camera to go out and find joy shooting (quite the opposite actually) - rather I find that they talk about general principles like aperture, composition, etc. Personally I watch them all for their personalities and not the gear they use, but again it’s fair that you don’t- I just don’t like that you’re putting it on them. I mean, I like wearing green jackets, but I don’t shame anyone for wearing red ones. 🤷🏼♂️
I’m not in that lucky position, but I know plenty of professionals in the music industry that turn down a lot of high end “gifts”/advert gifts for socials.
You're falling into the same trap by becoming to look elitist with everyone seemingly using Hasselblads which most people can't afford. It's obviously great for you and the other TH-cam Togs getting to use the best kit available but the majority of the rest of us can't even dream of ever owning that brand.

Yes you are right, it doesn’t bother YOU at all.
@@edc641
No it isn’t!
Hi mark - I think I must of missed that as well.. I had it planned and forgot to say it in the studio - so sorry
@NigelDanson Many thanks for the reply..appreciate you taking the time.
Maybe it's a subject to cover in a future video.. 👍
@@pattymattes7124 Or is Nikon part of the same marketing umbrella as Hasselblad? The same people seem to be getting both Nikon's and Hasselblads...
@@EdwardMartinsPhotography frankly that’s twice what you need. At least.
The camera on a phone can be such a powerful tool for composition.
I enjoyed your video and found the guidance very helpful for my wide angle photography. Wouldn't it be great if Nikon could produce a medium format camera which Z mount lens could be fitted and was reasonably-priced 😀
Excellent thank you
I enjoyed the video as usual Nigel.
Great image's as usual.
I think i will stick to my Nikon D750.
Catch you on the next one.
Really enjoyed this but must admit I’m very surprised hassleblad haven’t gifted you an earth explorer- they seem to have given one to everyone else
Maybe Nigel turned them down, as he can’t be bought so easily 😇
That was very helpful and well explained, if only I had see this a week ago when wandering around Swaledale where there were loads of waterfalls and old mine workings. P.S regarding your woodland LUT’s have you ever considered doing them for other non ADOBE applications such as DXO?
Interesting Video 👍🏻
I realize that you need all of the DR you can muster in your location. It would be a great test for you and those of us who only have a Z9/Z8 to see the difference. We're all photographers of the environment we live in. I wouldn't want to be the type of photographer who needs to fly around the world for 'the shot'! So many live on the backs of other taxpayers.
Good tips. Nice use of the phone. That looks like a SF Giants hat, Ive seen you a few different ones eith the same logo. You're obviously not in San Francisco so I'm curious whats the deal with thise hats?
Does the 20-35 have much focus breathing? That can be irritating when focus stacking
But Your Majesty, The peasants have no food! "Let them eat Hasselblads"!
if i see one more youtuber shoehorn a Hasselblad ad into a 'how to guide'.. 🤣
20mm-35mm - 16-27mm full frame equivalent. I wonder how much resolution is actually being resolved, considering X2D is approx 100mp.
That is exactly why I quit watching sports. Over paid people who are out of touch with their fan base. Quite a similar situation, don't you think ???
Now my feed is full of Hasslebad X2D videos; a camera I will never, in this lifetime, be able to afford!
Oh no!! You want me to play a sad song on a violin for you? 😂
Sure you will. In 5 years time they’ll be going for peanuts secondhand. Just like the X1Dii is now.
And a camera you will never need either... I know I don't.
The camera really doesn’t matter
But the peasants have no bread ? "Let Then Eat Cake" !
Hasselblad's marketing has harmed many beloved landscape photography TH-camrs. Those Hasselblad episodes feel disconnected and less relatable.
@@quixoticelixer594people who own eye wateringly expensive cameras always say that 😅
Salty...
Good point considering the price of the equipment today is out of reach for most people
So nice that all of you are getting cameras that the vast majority of us will NEVER be blessed with, must be nice...
@@ChrisClaytonhe said he already owned the camera??
@@ChrisClaytonagreed … I’ve mostly tuned out of these vids because they have all become infomercials.
I don't think it's difficult to find a good foreground. The problem is finding it where a good background is also aligned😂
Oh dear another "ive got a Hasselblad" video. How do so many so called 'expert' photographers fall for Hasselblads marketing? Hasselblad have worked out how shallow so many photographer are. Nikon must be real please with their ambassadors.

Tbf I don’t think Nigel got the ltd edition, he’s still keeping it real 😉

I'm guessing that as he set up and sold a software company he doesn't need to be gifted very much at all. If I could afford one I'd get one too cos they are just so beautiful.
@@whitehorseflyer I'm sure you're right. My comment was not intended as a pop at Nigel. who I respect, but I can see it reads that way, so I'll delete it.
Gjeessss now everyone gets a hasselblad. It’s becoming boring. Please do just photography, your woodland videos are the best!
Not the gear, it's the process.
Either YOU are inspired & entertained or not.
●These TH-camrs could be using a NASA camera or a Phone & it would still require 'the process & eye'
I wouldn’t watch an iPhone photography channel tbf 😇
I agree 100%
It’s not new: it’s just his camera 🤷♂️
He did not at any point of the video promote the camera. He just used it as a starter to explain the wide angle format... So this is absolutely ok. You may do it with any 14mm equivalent 😊
Not a big fan of ultra wide, except for astrophotography
Cameras that list at $8k without a lens are a definite turnoff. When Danson, Gibbs, Heaton, et al were using high end but affordable digital cameras, their videos were much more interesting. Anyway, thanks for many useful tips over the years but I won't be tuning in going forward.
Much the same as what Leica are doing in providing several street photographers with cameras these days, so unfortunately in most cases the video becomes much more about the camera and lens rather than the creativity.
Erm? Not sure it was 😂
Because we can all relate to having a Hasselblad and associated lenses. Sorry but most TH-cam photographers are getting really boring, formulaic and repetitive now. But anyway thank you to MPB/Squarespace for sponsoring all of this.
This is a video about wide angle not about hasselblad, did you actually watch the video?
Someone who thinks it's the camera who takes beautiful pictures and not the photographer.
So you care more about the camera than the shots? Wow, thats kinda sad....
It wasn’t long ago it was yellow bags and how absolutely fantastic they were, funny how you don’t see them anymore.
Another one... Funny how the identity of a whole channel is defaced by the temptation of a freebee!
You're falling into the same trap by becoming to look elitist with everyone seemingly using Hasselblads which most people can't afford. It's obviously great for you and the other TH-cam Togs getting to use the best kit available but the majority of the rest of us can't even dream of ever owning that brand.
Good point! Perhaps not really ethical "IF" the gear is FREE ??
