    • @StormsandSaugeye
      @StormsandSaugeye 9 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Plur307 Alright? So?
      I was referring to the people who allege that his survival based upon caloric intake is impossible. And that somehow he was unable to survive on the food resources that were available.
      Given that we have lots of people who have survived even longer at sea, the claims are kind of odd.

    • @JesusChristIsLord__

      +Amy Yeah, I've written several books on nutrition and I'm a lead scientist in a major project involving molecular biology. Pretty sure that makes me qualified.

    • @StormsandSaugeye

      hsucks And? I'm sorry, I'm just kinda curious about where you're going with this is all. I restate my position (Especially since I haven't actually been to this videos page since... December 25th 2014) that his survival is not unheard of, further, that given the vast records of people who have survived similar situations with similar conditions, it is not outside any realm of reason that he survived, if not maintained his weight.
      What I won't rule out is the possibility of cannibalism. However, that is well outside the scope of my discussions intent. What bugs me is people coming up with bullshit reasons and saying "He's a fake because he's not skin and bones" and "He couldn't survive at sea"
      Take for instance the Essex. The ship wrecked in November, about 4-5 months the crew were eventually rescued. They had fewer resources than their modern counterpart in the video, and many did not survive. Given this example (Though short) I find it puzzling when people claim that him surviving is impossible therefore he faked it.

    If you read the full explanation, it was the boys mind that betrayed him. They ate jellyfish, birds, fish, turtles, but the younger man (who was actually 22 years old), ate a bird that ingested a poisonous snake. Jose said that it made Cordoba (the young man) sick for 2 days, and after that, he refused to eat any raw bird meat, only fresh turtle meat (which was much more sparse). He had already mentally started shutting down hours in to the ordeal, and was suicidal a few weeks in to their drift. The food poisoning was the last excuse to stop eating and waste away. Jose actually had to convince him many times before that to eat something and not give up. After Cordoba died, Jose was devastated and he said mentally, the ordeal was much worse after that facing it alone :(

      +Adam Laimana exactly!! and why would he kill his only companion, just for food? Im sure he feared being alone more than anything else. They had very little concerns with food, they were able to catch enough to sustain them at most times. and youre so right, the kid had lost his mind!

    • @nessnake123
      @nessnake123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I believe more in the other theory, they fought, he killed the other guy, went hiding for a year in an island. His behaviour when he was rescue was weird like hiding something, his body is healthy for being more than a year in the sea, I think he was in the sea but not 1 year, he was like 2 months maybe

    • @ShogunPride205
      @ShogunPride205 8 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      If they were stuck at sea, how would he sail around for a year "hiding out". Or say he found an island to live on for 10 months, how would he then sail across the entire pacific in a broken boat, all the way to the Marshall Islands? As incredulous as his story is, these other theories make zero sense.

    • @nessnake123
      @nessnake123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Adam Laimana his boat was ok, they fought, he killed the other guy, uses his boat to reach an island and hide for a year then weeks later the boat brokes, kid of that the story, in spanish there are some reports that he killed a guy in El Salvador then he went to Mexico hiding from people who wanted revenge and kill him, it seems like his past is some kind of obscure let me put the link

    • @ShogunPride205
      @ShogunPride205 8 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I've read his biography by Johnathon Franklin, you should read it, everything will make a lot more sense. Pull out a map and look at where the Marshall Islands are, even in your theory, he would still have to drift thousands of miles across the pacific, lol.

    I don't believe he ate his companion. If you actually read his book, you will realize that this man actually had immense practical knowledge for surviving due to his fishing background, familiarity with "reading" the sea, optimistic and strong personality, faith, and his incredible adaptations with his hunting instinct. Just because it is difficult for most people to imagine him surviving without eating his companion- because it is difficult for YOU to imagine surviving that long without eating a person- does not automatically mean that he ate his companion to survive. Seriously, I doubt that a person could survive just on 1 dead human body for more than a year at sea, through storms and all other factors. People need to look at the big picture here. After all this man has gone through, it's sad that most people just assume this.

    • @SarahSakura
      @SarahSakura 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      007 373 5963 If you read the book, you will see exactly how he did it. He was very adaptive and "street" smart (or "sea" smart 😉). In a brief summary, he cleaned out one end of the boat and whenever there was rain, he used all his salvaged water/soda bottles (lots of them floating around in the sea that he collected) and emptied supply bottles to collect the water and ration it over the course of days. He also drank turtle blood (similar to how others in the area survived). He also found a large empty container floating as rubbish and used that to collect rain water, too. He focused all his energy on hunting birds and fish using makeshift devices and his own bare hands and ingenuity, and collected and rationed his water supplies. This also prevented him from going crazy, it distracted his mind and helped keep him alive.

    • @SarahSakura
      @SarahSakura 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am also a very skeptical person and after reading his book and the news reports and investigations, I am convinced he went through this entire ordeal. It is difficult for us to imagine a person of such strength and adaptability, but entirely possible.

      ***** I don't know.You may be right.When I was in the Marines I went through survival training.A lot of people don't know that the Marines and Navy are really one unit split in half.Some say we are kissing cousins as a joke.I went through that area on a Navy supply ship.I know that the water is about the same temperature as the surrounding air.But only the first five feet or so.Then it gets cold the deeper you go.So yes you may be right about using the body to attract more fish so he could eat the fish.
      As far as the body being in water all the time then it would soak up the salt water and I was told in training that saltwater would decompose a body almost three times as fast as fresh water.Now if the teenage boy wouldn't eat and died because of it then a person has to wonder if the guy had a couple of big meals off the boy and then cut him up in strips,store it somehow and use him for fish bait.
      If somebody is too stupid to eat and dies because of it then the moral question would be,Is it wrong to eat the guy and then cut the remaining flesh off and use it for fish bait?Would that be wrong?
      I was thinking that maybe he found a small island,eat and stayed in good shape and then made a dash for the Marshall Islands.Kwajalein,I think is the largest island.They are well over a hundred small islands near and around the main island of Kwajalein.That makes me think that maybe he did a little island hopping.
      Also Cody the survival expert is wrong about drinking your urine.It does have salt in it but going through survival training they made us drink one full 12 oz glass of your own urine.It taste horrible as hell but if your in bad shape then you will drink it.Sorry,I didn't mean to write a book:)

    IMO the best people to survive on a raft with no food are the fat or muscular ones because they can draw upon body resources when starvation kicks in.
    In effect they are still eating when someone with less fat or muscle isn't.The skinny people would soon die no matter how tough they are.

    I'm pretty sure I could rig up a makeshift water distilling apparatus if I was lost at sea and had nothing better to do. You could heat water with sunlight and collect the water vapor so it condenses and runs into a separate container. You don't have to get it boiling hot. It would be slow and tedious but what else do you have to do all day?

    • @mikestoneadfjgs
      @mikestoneadfjgs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Plur307 lol it doesnt work like that. you are pretty sure you could rig that? go out and try.

    • @Plur307
      @Plur307 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Siedler Joe
      I've rigged up distillation setups both in real survival camping trips and in chemistry labs where I work full time as a scientist. So by all means explain to me how you can't:
      1. place salt water in a sealed container, place it in the sun
      2. have a tube of some kind run out of the top of the container
      3. wrap tube in cloth
      4. keep cloth damp so that the phase change of evaporation cools the tube
      5. Have the tube drip into a collection container
      Before you say it won't work consider I have done it several times and it does indeed work.
      Yes it would be slow. But when you are trapped on a boat adrift at sea for a year what else do you have to do with your time? The speed depends on how hot you can get the water and how cold you can get the condensation coil.

    • @mikestoneadfjgs
      @mikestoneadfjgs 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plur307 They problem i think is how slow it is. It takes too long for that process to occur if it is to be relied on for hydration. A better solution would be to capture as much rainwater as possible using those materials instead. Or set up a water filtration system with sand charcoal etc. Either way, problems occur and drinkin your piss is always on the table. Interesting idea though. If i was lost at sea on a fishing boat id probably give it all a try. It all depends on how many resources he had with him on the boat

    Who doesnt believe that other guy refused to eat, watch series at youtube "shouldnt be alive" where people talk about similar experiences and what they have been through while drifting in the ocean. It helps to put thing in perspective

    For those saying he ate his companion, did he eat him over a few days or weeks? He had no fridge and wasn’t in the Andes snow capped mountains. How long would the body be edible in the hot sun? He was lost for 13 months. This was not crucial to his survival even if he did.

    Few people die of starvation after a month. It takes a long time to die of starvation

    As per the limited details provided in this video: I've got a hypothesis that he killed his friend, then went undercover and after a year came to some island and said he was lost.

      Exactly my thoughts. First place where you lose weight is in the face and hands. Total rubbish story.

      Do you really think a massively fat man could do that? Fat people are weak, psychologically I mean

      Why so? Because they happen to eat a lot? That doesn't equate mental weakness. For some people this may be true, but it's certainly not true in all cases
