Oh my God. Sir, you just made my day!
Had bought an MSI B550 Tomahawk and a Ryzen 5 5600X today (yes I was able to get one). Firstly I test bench all my hardware before putting it into my case and for some freaking reason the CPU Debug LED was flashing. Did aaaaalll the things, CPU out, making sure everything fits, only one ram module (swapped them of course) no gpu, clear cmos etc.... But then, I read in the manual something with Flash Button....immediately searched on TH-cam, watched your video, and man oh man. Working like a charm now. Thanks!!!!!!
Edit: thanks to MSI for putting this nice feature on their boards. Without this I would have send the board back...

Hey you’re awesome for this. Your video is 100x better than the video MSI put out themselves, their video was lacking in so many ways. Just to address this for anyone else wondering. I tried this with a fully built system that was running fine 5 minutes prior. The system didn’t want to boot. My power button and USB ports on the back went out when I tried to flash from usb. Tried again after taking out gpu and ram, and also resetting the cmos by taking out the battery and it flashed perfectly. Reinstalled gpu and ram, power button and rear usb are back and the system is fully working with the latest bios. Hope this helps anyone else! PS. The led flashback light stayed on after the system rebooted itself. I just waited an extra few minutes to be safe and powered off the system.

Very helpful, I'd like to add two things:
    1. While the update is happening the cpu light will be solid red, this is normal (mine had me worried because this was yhe reason I couldn't get to POST)
    2. If format with Windows doesn't work (didn't for me) download a tool called Rufus (latest version as of this comment is 3.21) and format as non-bootable, leave all the other settings as is.
If successful there will be an autorun.inf file and autorin.ico file on the usb, from here follow steps as instructed in the video.

    Thank you! Great guide!
It worked, but I had to flash twice. I would probably get upset if I didn't know I should try more than once, like "oh no, I bricked my MB". I also learnt that exFAT doesn't work.
First time, no cpu/ram on the motherboard, red light flashed for 6-7 minutes in my case, then it restarted automatically. I installed the cpu and a single stick of ram but I couldn't get past the cpu-debuglight (even after a few minutes).
The second time I started by removed the bios battery for 30 seconds (unlike the first time), left my cpu and single ram stick in, and let the process run again. After the automatic restart it finally made it all the way to the gpu-debuglight. I shut it down, installed a gpu and got my video output, ready to mess around in the bios.

This board is a joke. I had many many flashing issues when Zen2 first came out and a year later and I'm still having issues with it. The light just flashes 3 times and then goes solid which means file not found which is the same problem I had a year ago. I found the work around is to plug in the usb, press the flashback button until you see a solid light, remove the usb and press the button again, and then put the usb back in and press it again. This normally works after a couple of tries. There's a problem with the motherboard not being able to find the file the first try.

Make sure your USB flash drive uses the MBR (Master Boot Record) partition table - it won't work with GPT (GUID Partition Table)! You can convert the partition table with diskpart.exe (press the Windows key, type in "diskpart" => Enter)
Now with the command "list disk" it will show you all available SSDs/hard drives/flash drives and mark the GPT ones with an *
"select disk #" (# is the number of the flash drive you want to convert - double check that you picked the right one!)
"clean" DELETES all the data of the selected drive - BACKUP IMPORTANT DATA BEFOREHAND!
"convert mbr" (this process will take a few seconds and it will tell you when it's done)
Now you can exit diskpart and create a single FAT32 partition for the BIOS file.

I absolutely love you. Like to the bottom of my heart, thank you. Recently, I had issues with my PC (was on the dev build, my bad). So messed up trying to get off it. Ended up a few days later, randomly needing a restart, and then getting a boot error. Then it wouldn't show a screen at all. Started to panic. Looked up hours of what to do. In the 1st part of my paragraph, i tried installing windows 1st. Every and all ways, windows 10&11. Nothing worked then it did that "no screen on boot, even on BIOS). So eventually found this, did it step by step (was worried as i just built my pc a year ago, so still new) and it worked right away. My pc booted, my user still saved, desktop, everything came up as it was before it needed to restart. So atleast i can get into the desktop, not sure if it'll stay like this (I hope). Absolutely thank you.

Sweet! worked like a charm after a hiccup or two. Mines a B560 Carbon Gaming wifi board. first I used a Kingston G3 8gb pen drive and it failed a few times… first it glashed then stayed stuck on red. then later flashed 5 times and went off. so it may or may not be a faultt stick but this is NOT what caused the error. Luck would have it I also had a Kingston DT 50 8gb drive to hand so cleaned and formatted it and this time worked a charm! the reasol for the fail I suspect was having msi.rom in lower case. second rldrive I was sure to use all caps!
As my rig was already fully built and ises water cooling.. I was mot going to dismantle the cou and have to go hunting for thermal paste later! I stripped out the ram sticks and removed the graphics card leaving header cables etc connected. On reconnect and boot it took a few minutes to register itself onscreen but mission accomplished! thanks for having a clear guide to refer to - confirming the error of my ways even after the fact! lol

@5:04 About that "CMOS clear" procedure: this is a UEFI-based motherboard, which has no real CMOS RAM. The BIOS settings are instead stored in a variable (usually named "Setup") in the UEFI NVRAM, a region within the BIOS flash chip, which is not battery-backed, but truly non-volatile. So, removing the battery will only reset the RTC time, but leave all your NVRAM variables, including Setup, intact - unless MSI implemented specific code to erase the NVRAM if an RTC clock fault is detected (which is possibly something they would do on an enthusiast board like this, where security isn't such a great concern, but is generally bad practice due to all the security-related content in the NVRAM). Shorting the relevant jumper, on the other hand, should work fine. Also, the Flash button itself probably clears the NVRAM - at least regular flashing using M-Flash does.
BTW, this also means, you can alter BIOS settings from within Linux (if you know the right UEFI variable and offset to look), as Linux exposes UEFI NVRAM variables as files in a virtual file system.

Thank you so muchhhhhhhhhh MIke. I am writing in details to help if anybody faces below issue. It is really horrible feeling when bios is crashed .
Recently i tried to to update latest bios on MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC with FAT32 16 GB pen drive 2.0 via M-FLASH option in BIOS . But when i clicked m-flash option to enter flash mode the pc monitor went black out but still cpu was on. So i was waiting over 45 mints but still monitor black out. So I forced shut down pressing power button 6 sec and Again i turned on my PC but no display. So i understood my bios is crashed. Again forced shut down to press power button 5 sec. After that i removed the pen drive. I knew that this motherboard has facility to bios recover via BIOS Flash Back Button . So i searched tutorial then I found your video to recover my bios via USB Flash Back Button. But i didn't want to unplugged processor, ram, graphics card, etc because so much headache to me. So i followed all instructions of yours except removing parts. I just only unplugged HDMI cable of monitor & hard drive cables but all other parts was still on motherboard inside cabinet. Then simply i just plugged FAT32 16 GB pen drive 2.0 with latest bios to renaming MSI.ROM file to specific bios flash back usb port on motherboard. Then i just simply switched on switchboard to supply power and press Flash Back Button for 3 sec and started to flash red led light . As well as processor fan was also spinning up. BIOS Flash back Red led was flashing for about 3 mints after that red led light has turned off and system restarted itself automatically and after that i waited and watched BOOT,VGA,DRAM,CPU debug led was flashing itself automatically to ultimately turned off. Then i pressing cabinet power button for 5 sec to forcefully shut down my system actually I didn't want to direct off SMPS switch off . Anyways remove pen drive and attached all cables which i removed i.e hdmi cable, hard disk cable. Ultimately i successfully turned on PC with latest BIOS. Monitor is now smiling :-) . Thanks once again Mike.

Thank you very much! I finally received my MSI MEG X570 Unify today, have put everything together, new CPU is a Ryzen 7 5800X and I was shocked when I started the PC: The CPU fans spinning with full speed, monitor was black. But the PC didn't restart. Never had this before. Then I saw that the CPU LED is blinking, after that I was pretty sure that I'll have to update the BIOS. Didn't knew this before. Thought X570 boards are compatible out of the box (and at least some Asus boards really are) with the new CPUs. 😄 Luckily flashing the BIOS fixed the problem.
Oh, by the way: Since I never test the components before I put everything together, simply because I'm too lazy, my PC already was completed. I didn't wanted to remove CPU, GPU, RAM and all the other stuff again, so I just tested it without removing them before. And it worked without any problems. So it's not just a rumor that it works without removing everything else before flashing. 🙂

on my board, the bios flashback light flashes 3 times then stops. should I reformat the USB drive and try again, or is the Bios chip damaged or blank and won't update.

3 flashes usually means the file or drive cannot be seen by the flash hardware

I tried this on a B450A Pro Max...I had to press the power button after pressing the flash bios button for the led to start flashing. They PC turned off by itself. But now my PC will turn on for a second then turn off. What can I do to fix this. I read that I may have "bricked" my board.

you should not have pressed the power button that is probably not a good idea. you need to try and reflash the bios if possible and don't press the power button

@@mikesunboxing Thank you. If I just press the flash bios button the PC will try to power on then turn off. I waited 30 mins for it to restart but it never did. I decided to try to turn on the pc and that's when it started to actually perform the bios update.

That is very odd. I would open a support chat with msi about this. I don’t know what is going on there

I called MSI and found out something interesting. Basically I had a bad Mobo from the beginning but apparently alot of the A Pro MAXs have issues with using the flash button. The CS I was talking to said they will release an update to these boards soon. TLDR if you have the supposedly "Ryzen 3000 ready" B450A Pro MAX and it's not recognizing the cpu DON'T try to flash your BIOS, just send it back, unless you were extremely sloppy with install it's most likely a defective board.

When do you put the battery back into the Motherboard. Is it whilst there is still power to the board or after switching off the power?

Hello I have a question, do I need to power up the motherboard first after I connect the power supply or just press directly to flashback button?

Bad flash or incomplete? Maybe a bad usb stick or needs to be powered off completely and bios reset by removing the battery for a while
