Upcoming Wargames + Giveaway | July 2024 | New Releases | Board Games
The most salient feature in the new Air & Armor is that it is now completely solo-playable. That was something Compass tasked Bruce Maxwell with for the new edition.
Oh, good to know, thanks!
Put my form in, but this is my favorite show on the channel. There are lots of war gaming channels doing playthroughs, reviews or unboxing but not so many do upcoming war games. The mainstream board game channels (DT, MvM, etc.) do not pay that much attention to war games in their crowdfunding shows so this is a helpful show to keep track what is on crowdfunding, P500, etc.
Thanks for the input, and I'm glad you're finding this show helpful!
I would love to see you cover more games from smaller publishers, especially those outside the U.S. Maybe it could done as a monthly or quarterly episode. As example, the games found in Vae Victis magazine (France) or Para Bellum magazine (Italy) are very good but often unknown. Polish publisher Taktyka i Strategia is putting out some very high quality stuff, light years better than their offerings 5+ years ago. Anyways, just a thought. I appreciate it when the spotlight moves away from GMT/Compass/MMP/etc. and shines on the little guys for a change.🙂
I'd definitely like to have a balance of publishers represented, and where possible highlight some of the smaller publishers, for sure. The challenge, I've found, is that a fair number of them don't have much informaiton on their games available and don't really promote their games much, which often makes them both hard to find and hard to know what to say. But I'm trying to find one new company each Upcoming Wargames episode. :)
I'm not watching! My bank account can't take watching these kinds of videos! (secretly I am watching, but don't tell my wife, shhh 🤫)
Your secret is safe with me. :)
Well... Sadly, my bank account just took a hit in Sicilia :'(

Stuka Joe did a really nice play-through of Gallipoli a number of months ago. I highly recommend watching it if you have any interest in this game.
Oh, I didn't realize that, great to know, thanks!
I hadnt heard about the Gallipoli game. Will definitely check it out. Zeppelin Raider? Africa mission? Yes!!!
Zeppelin Raider seems like a ton of fun, yes. I'm looking forward to both games, tbh. :)
Love the look of zeppelin raider!
I'm excited for that one too. I have a copy with my name on it, so I'll be covering it on the channel. :)
Cray Havoc, and let slips the games of war!
Ha!
Happy 4th!! My grandson came over for a visit and one of his first requests was "Can we watch that Zilla guy?" Heck Yeah! We watched the Snow Runner series and we both had a good laugh with you while learning the game before going to the PS4. Thanks for all your work!!
Haha! That's awesome. Thanks so much for sharing that, made my day. Safe driving!
Boots on the ground sure looks interesting.
Yes, I like games where each counter is an individual soldier, and the solo emphasis is quite promising. :)
@@ZillaBlitz I've been really enjoying Combat because it's the same scale so Boots on the Ground should be right up my alley. Also you don't tend to see so many modern warfare solo games.
Combat! is on my Shelf of Opportunity and I really want to get it to the table. :)
Got into the Zeppelin Raider KS and ended buying all their solitaire games as addons. Keep it up and you'll drive me into bankruptcy.
Whoops! Haha! But if you like these types of solitaire games, those are a ton of fun! You'll have hours of enjoyment with them. :)
Another informative episode mate. Enjoy your vacation!
Thanks Parkera! :)
Great Questions. #1 Turn Based PC Games: Yes. I have a long history of Matrix/Slitherine games. Currently playing Shadow Empires. #2 Solo or w/People: Solo by situation. Life in a rural community but trying to recruit a game group. #3 Comments on Types of Videos: A) A developed story AAR. I first saw your Silent Victory. Loved it = Do More. B) Upcoming Kickstarter/P500/etc updates once a month is Golden. C) Bulge Off type production once or twice a year. D) Lots of channels do unboxing. Suggest you combine your story telling talents with a 're-boxing' approach focusing on game flow, clarity of rules, charts, counters and a final top like/critique of the game. Play to your strengths. I keep coming back to watch.
Thanks for all the input and ideas. This is very helpful and much appreciated. Noted for future reference, and I think I agree with it all. :)
As an aside, Shadow Empires in one of the games I'd love to show on the channel. :)
Air and Armor looks to have a level of detail reminiscent of Thin Red Line C3 series games.
Interesting, I'm not familiar with that system, it was good?
I backed Mustang Leader. Just picked up Phantom Leader as my first in the series and I'm already hooked
Thunderbolt Apache Leader is by far the best in the series. I knew..I own every single one. TAL has terrain tiles that are placed randomly, and this changes the scenario HUGELY, every time you play. None of the other Leader games have this.
@dennissvitak5475 ive heard great things about Apache! I got the OG Phantom cause $$ right now. For sure thinking about Apache but I think I might do Zero L next and wait on Apache
@@twhanmer - Zero Leader is a HUGE game, like Corsair Leader. Very large amount of content. I was an aviation meteorologist in the Air Force, from 1974-1994, so TAL hits the sweet spot for me.
@@dennissvitak5475Zero Leader a big game? Makes me what it more lol! What are your thoughts on Hornet Leader?
I'd be curious to hear how you like Mustang Leader. :) And I've heard a numbe of people say that Thunderbolt Apache Leader is their favorite. :)
Boots on the Ground looks cool. Is there a similar with a WW2 theme?
Not that I know of, no. Looks very interesting. :)
For the first time, I went “all in” when backing Mustang Leader. Will likely need to buy a second box to help organize and store everything
Oh, very nice. That's a LOT of gaming. Enjoy!
More games to filter through, not sure with regards to DVG as they appear to be in a bit of a mess, need to sought themselves out. Will buy Zep raider from here as postage is almost same as game on ks. Many thanks for all the info.
Zeppelin Raider looks like a great bit of fun, yes. :)
thank for the video! I love this series as someone new to wargaming this helps me find games to push out all the fantasy euros from my shelf lol
I'm glad you're liking the series, thanks!
Good stuff as always! However, I think there was an error in the drawing because it didn't pick me 😂
Thanks! Sorry you didn't win, better luck next time. There will be more. One of these days! :)
18:47 I like the look of the components but dang, I just can’t see enough about how it plays to order.
Oh, last time I was there I didn’t see the rules.
Glad you found the rules! :)
Purgatorio is based on the same conflict as Inferno (Levy and Campaign). The title is based on the second volume of Dante's Divine Comedy (Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso...Hell, Purgatory, Heaven).
Yes, that's a great point, thanks for sharing!
I put "no" for the PC games question, but... I play a LOT of Twilight Struggle, the occasional COIN game on Vassal, and a few different games on Rally The Troops. So, no, I do not play PC hex & counter games as you mentioned in the video, but I play other types!
Yes, I probably should have clarified but I was thinking of PC wargames as non-board game versions, just like you've described.
Boots on the Ground sounds exciting. I will have to look into the crowdfunding. Thanks!
Definitely agree on that one, looks like it could be a lot of fun. Thanks for stopping in. :)
@@ZillaBlitz Enjoy your two weeks off!
Thanks!
Enjoy your vacation.
Thanks! :)
Hi Mike, I really enjoy the upcoming wargames as you usually shows ones I wasn't aware of. Similar to others, my wife/wallet are not as fond of your videos for unknow reasons...lol. Playthroughs are a close second as I can get a feel whether I will truly enjoy a game. Regarding PC wargaming, I am ESPECIALLY looking forward to the tactical turn-based "Forgotten but Unbroken" which appears to be very similar to "X-COM Enemy Unknown" However, most of my PC games are FPS or RTS games. The closest I have to traditional turn based computer war games are "Twilight Struggle", "Labyrinth" or "Fort Sumter", but no Hex and Counter type games.
I do have multiple PC dungeon crawler style turned based games, though. Solitaire is my favorite as I have more flexibility on when and what to play and how long the gaming session can be. Sorry for the long response, but the survey didn't have any area for general comments. Enjoy your time off.
Thanks for all the information. I think I'm going to do a second survey at some point soon to get at some of the nuances that were missing from the first. I also was thinking that people would use these comments as a spot to add more about the survey if they wanted. Thanks!
I had no idea about Boots on the Ground Deluxe, so thanks for sharing that! Enjoy your vacation. I've tried some turn-based PC war games, but it's not something I've enjoyed. Maybe it's not finding the right games? I primarily play solo games now as trying to find agreeable times with 3+ other middle-aged gamers has been difficult.
Thanks for the info, and Boots on the Ground could be quite interesting, for sure. Looking forward to seeing it move forward.
Thanks for the breakdown, Mr. Blitz!
My pleasure, Nathan!
Sills I asked you to recommend a good video camera and recommended 2 LOGITECH - THANKS my man! My bro and I each got one and they work like a charm.!
Glad you are liking them! :)
I am super keen to try Imperial borders, especially cause of the period and because it leans more in the direction of diplomacy ( the game ). That being said I have a lot of reservations about War Room though. I can't help but feel it doesn't need to be that long.
It'll be interesting to see how Imperial Borders plays. I've heard good things about War Room, and also heard that it is a lengthy game. :)
I don't mind a lengthy game, but it is length for the wrong reasons for me. The hidden orders stuff and the strategic planning and movement is interesting enough. Resolving each combat on a separate board in a small mini game only rolling 10 dice at a time. It can get decently quick, but there are a ton of combats to go through and unless you have enough extra components (Game only comes with enough to resolve one fight at a time) it drags quite a bit.
And I take some issue with doing the interesting part for 15 minutes, and then resolving that for 30-45 minutes. (Perhaps overstating it a bit.)
But I assume the shifting diplomatic nature could add a lot. That makes the strategic phase a lot more interesting.
My savings will not like this video... but I do! I had to buy the Zeppelin game, allthough shiping to germany is nearly the price of the game itself. Ejoy your vacation!!
The Zeppelin Raider looks really good, yes. Excited to see that one get a reprint. :)
Your videos are always part of my morning coffee!
Is there a schedule anywhere of your upcoming plays? I am really looking forward to Paths of Glory and Empire of the sun (and in general just cdg's).
Thanks! Glad to hear that. :) I don't have a schedule per se, but I have a project list. The order gets bumped and shifted a bit, but in general at the moment I have about 30 projects in the queue. In the monthly updates I'll generally share what I think the next few plays will be.
Paths of Glory and Empire of the Sun are on my Shelf of Shame list but I'm not sure when/if they'll get video content created. I hope at some point but I want to clear my project list a bit first. :)
Now I'm waiting for (1) Total War Rome: The Board Game (2) Mustang Leader
Oh, I'd not heard of the board game version of Total War, interesting.
Enjoy your vacation!!!
Thanks Dara!
Looking forward to mow new games!
So many great games coming out, it's remarkable.
I'm playing hex and counter PC games by Wargame Design Studio, mostly horse and musket games. I spend about 2-3 hours a day playing 3-4 games PBEM (play by e-mail) with my opponent friend in Scotland. We have been going at it for about 4 years now, rarely missing a day.
I have hundreds of board war games that I have collected and played since 1958 along with hundreds of painted miniatures, but for me WDS hex & counter PC games is the way to go if you like fighting battles rather than fighting rules books and charts. That is the job for the computer. Had computers came around about 20 years sooner, there probably wouldn't have been many board war games.
I still like to see the board war games if only for the art, playing pieces and physicality.
The main work of WDS now it to update the almost 100 games they have available.
I would suggest you go with something fully updated like Campaign Gettysburg or Waterloo Campaign.
Have you tried Pike and Shot Campaigns? Excellent game!
Yeah! I played that quite a bit. It was may main game before WDS. That one does have a tough AI or maybe I don't quite understand the system of warfare. I always played the Polish and got as many Winged Hussars as possible. I had lots of very thrilling games decided by a point or two on the last game turn.
I've got three WDS games now to explore and am planning to start on that in August. I'm looking forward to digging in more. :)
Only solitaire, PLay throughs.
Thanks!
Hey bud ,were having a bit of a Zeppelin raid ATM, it's called an election, it's like what colour deck chair wld u like on your titanic journey pal,, makes no diff ,good morning m8 🌊👍🐦🐬 frm blighty ,

LOL I thought you said 'Stupid Joe'...I had to rerun the tape, you said Stuka....
Haha! Too funny. :) Yeah, Joe is not stupid. He's really smart. :)
@@ZillaBlitz stuka is da bomb!!
I have started to dig into the Leader series, having played a few Hornet Leader campaigns and just got Tiger Leader, highly influenced by your playthrough of Sherman Leader. I do like the base system and the narrative the games create, however I am a little afraid that they are destroying the games with all expansions. It's a bit like the DLC plauge of modern computer games.
Glad you’re liking the Leader games, that’s great to hear. Based on what they do, I feel like the DLCs are highly optional.
Finally got to sit and watch video.
Not interested in this particular contest.
Yes I play turn based pc games
98% solo play
Like a mix of board and pc war games. Also dungeon is on my Steam wishlist now.
Keep up the great work.
No worries on the contest. I was thinking I should have had a question asking if people wanted to be excluded from the drawing. Thanks for the input! :)
Welcome to "Calling My Buddy On The Telephone And Discussing The Movie We Saw Last Night," and on this show, I'm going to call my buddy on the telephone . . .
Haha!
Hi Mike, Great video. Just wondering if I can enter the contest since I won last month. If I can, is there a link to the survey or do I just answer the questions in the comments. Thanks.
Go for it, Thomas! Thanks for asking. There is a link in the video description to the survey. :)
@@ZillaBlitz Okay. Thanks Mike. For some reason when I looked at your video on my PC the links were not there, nothing was highlighted. But it is there now.
Hard pass on watching computer games. I play 99% solo and prefer play throughs, but enjoy them all (except the computer stuff 😅)
No worries, thanks for the intel! The large majority of "solo" responses have been very interesting.
When you said “England and things like that”, were you referring to the countries of Scotland and Wales but not sure where they exist?
Zilla uses "and things like that" as punctuation :)
I don't recall this offhand, so hard to answer for me. What time was it?
@@ZillaBlitz don’t worry about it, I’ve subscribed to your channel btw. Most often as not, people from the other side of the pond say England for the United Kingdom which consists of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Ah, yes, I try to make those distinctions correctly but I'm still prone to messing it up now and then, especially when I'm tired or processing a few thoughts at the same time. I appreciate people pointing it out when I mess it up, as I understand the importance and want to try to get it right. :)
PM sent!
Replied!
I love wargames but am also quite critical, if I may. Larry Harris became a brand into himself (despite flaws in his games), but 90% of hex and counter games are quite undifferentiated (just more of the same). It makes me wonder how many more of the same games can the market take. Also, the complexity of some games (120 pages rulebook!!!) clearly shows that only a few hundred people (tops) will ever play the game. In sum, less than 10% of wargames are really worth the time, money and experience. If publishers want to keep releasing highly undifferentiated, cumbersome and expensive games, they shouldn't expect good sales, so it's more for the vanity of the designer...
Thanks for sharing.
Oh, please stop talking of fun games.
The next thing will be fun wars.
Let's be clear: Games are fun; wars are not fun.
Wurzburg..148 pages of rules?
Yes, I saw a note on Compass games that says the rules are essentially the same length as for the earlier version of the game, but less words per page (900 vs. 1500) and more supporting help (graphics, etc.).
@@ZillaBlitz ty
