Creative Couple's Stunning Tiny House Cost Only $17k!

  • Built for only US$17,000 this young couple's incredible tiny house is packed with unique and interesting design elements. The entire build was carried out as a DIY project using mainly reclaimed materials, as the couple saved up for each new phase of the construction.
    The couple decided to build a tiny house on wheels to give them freedom and more options for their future. Not knowing what city they were going to live in, or where they would need to travel for work once graduating, a house on wheels gave them the ability to simply hitch up their home and follow whatever opportunities presented themselves.

      You have to be able to do more than tolerate each other if you're going to share such a small environment. That kind of chemistry is perhaps more important than having the money, desire, and skills to build such a home.

      I just tried watching a tiny house program on netflix. The pace was frenetic and the quick camera cuts and zooms meant you couldn’t get a proper sense of the space and layout. It was awful and stress inducing to watch. The exact opposite of what Bryce and Rasa have achieved.

    A tub, wood stove, french doors, deep couch. All in a 20ft tiny house with Shou sugi ban siding. Well done!

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey La! Absolutely, when it comes to small space designing I think you need to prioritise your needs and then ensure that those needs are taken care of in your build. If you pick out the things that are really important to you and make sure that they are included, then the space will work for you and you'll be happy in your home. This couple did a great job of that and their home is all the more special for it!

  • @ElementL116

    This is a real tiny HOME. So many tiny houses out there, but this one really feels like a home and the budget is in line with what a tiny home ought to be IMHO... a tiny home - not a tiny Mcmansion.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      True on all fronts. You can build a beautiful and affordable tiny home for a small budget, but as with this couple it does mean doing the labour yourself and spending time sourcing affordable (usually reclaimed) materials. I especially like these projects as the owners generally are more connected to the build as their own labour went into creating it, and every plank of wood has a story.

    1. They have a bathtub.

    I wish the Host would always ask how they found the parking space and what they pay in lot fee. Because once you build, even with no Mortgage, that can be significant. I was recently disappointed to find parking at a local THOW community is $600/month. That’s what we now pay in rent.

    Nice. I find these tiny homes on wheels very intriguing. Maybe one day! Currently, my husband and I live in a 916 square foot house we built for about $20,000. It's a straw bale house. We used some reclaimed materials. Anyone can see it in the "Straw Bale House" playlist on my channel. In a way we are building a tiny house on wheels...very tiny! Living Big In A Tiny House, I just read an article that you are based in New Zealand. I was just over there May 2016 designing sets that were built in Studio West right out side of Auckland for the film Project Eden Vol 1. We shot all over the North Island. Then traveled down to Wellington to talk on a panel at Armageddon. I want to get back there and make another film, it is such a beautiful friendly place. I think out of all the countries I've made films in the most beautiful are New Zealand and Ireland. It's awesome that you get to travel to other countries to shoot tiny homes. The variety of tiny homes that you have come across is so amazing. We are thinking of going tiny since we travel so much and every episode of Living Big in a Tiny House makes me want to do it even more.

    Hi Bryce, there is 1 crucial issue that is never ever discussed in any tiny house videos - the issue of where do you actually put these houses??? Building/buying a portable tiny house may be cheap and a solution to the problem of housing affordability etc., but finding a place to put a tiny home is definitely NOT cheap and easy in any major city in Australia - there is nowhere affordable , other than a friend or family member's backyard , to put a tiny house and as most people work in a major city, parking a tiny house in the country is not viable. I really wish you would cover this issue in one of your future videos. Thanks, Magdalena

      Magdalena French bingo! There are a ton of regulations regarding square footage, trailers, etc. Where I live, you can't find a plot in the mountains for under $30k and of course it is far from any major cities. They never address these factors and these are crucial to consider before dumping money into a tiny home that you may not even be able to place somewhere.

      A shorter commute (the shorter the better, IMHO) equals an improved quality of life -- not to mention a smaller carbon footprint: fewer nonrenewable resources consumed, etc., etc., etc.. Most of us already spend far too much time at a 'job' -- how many more hours of your (very finite) life do you wish to spend sitting in a car?

    • @tanstaafl1960
      @tanstaafl1960 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Gray water is occasionally mentioned, but not the rest of the waste. Even a composting toilet needs to be emptied out once in a while. A standard flush toilet (even a modern low flow one) uses a lot of water, and you'd need a holding tank. At that point it's no different from an RV, with regular trips to a 'dump station' required.

    This is by far one of the most amazing tiny houses I've seen. The couple that built it are really talented. If I was designing a house for myself, THIS is how it would be. However, I'd be living in it for the rest of my life. Save up, buy myself a large plot of land, stick it in the middle and that's where I'd live for the rest of my life. Good luck for your future.

      Darren Boss I feel the same way! Put in on a nice piece of land with a lake view-I am set for life! Oh-I would also build a large porch out front-where I could sit and watch the sun go down over the lake : )

    This is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most beautiful tiny house I have ever seen. It encompasses perfectly everything I personally want in a tiny house and the incredible bond this young couple has built-literally and figuratively-in this home will serve them well throughout their life together. And perhaps someday they can pass it on to a son or a daughter as his or her first home. Well done!
    And, Bryce, you have an outstanding program here as well. It’s a pleasure to watch. Thank you for creating it.
    Many superlatives, I know, but each one is truly heartfelt.

    I adore this tiny house. I think it's great the way they made it to work for themselves. It fits their needs and wants ! I also am excited to see that it was made from reclaimed materials. So much gets wasted these days. It looks so cozy and organic......a house you really want to come home to. Thank you Bryce for sharing all these lovely homes. I enjoy watching you and seeing the sheer joy you get from hearing all the details of each build. Looking forward to your next tiny house to share.

    • @livingbig
      @livingbig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Maggie. I really enjoy showcasing these homes that have a high content of reclaimed materials. The building industry is incredibly wasteful . Some estimates place around 40% of landfill waste as coming from the construction industry. With tiny homes, we have an opportunity to salvage much of this and repurpose it for incredible small homes such as this one. :)

    One of the things I love about your videos is the fact that you present them so others can imagine what they can do in the same layout. You make people ask, "How can I make this my own? What is important to me, a need instead of a want?
    I love the eclectic design of this place, but the fact that they could tell you their favorite parts, aspects of which they were not willing to compromise, made me love this build even more.

  • @TheMusachioedBrony

    Oh my gosh, love, love, love this house! How cozy and amazing. I could move into that house in a heartbeat-great cooking kitchen, sofa one can lounge on, and even a bathtub! That photo of the wife sitting in the bathtub during the build made me laugh-good for her for sticking to her guns! She seems kinda petite, so that is fortunate. I am 5'10", and doubt even half of me would fit in there. I hope this couple hangs onto their tiny house forever. Once they do buy a house they should buy one that will allow the Tiny House on their property. Then they can use it as a guest house, then their kids can use it as teenagers and take it off to college. Finally, when they retire they can move the Tiny House onto a piece of lake property and enjoy. I think a Tiny House is such a useful thing to own no matter what stage of life you are in!!

  • @zanevanzuyen8397

    I love the way they laid the floor! In all the other tiny home videos I've seen, the floors are either laid out horizontally (making the space seem longer) or vertically (making the space seem wider), but at an angle, like they did it, I think kind of made the space appear wider and longer at the same time but also added a lovely artistic and homey feel to the space. I think this is one of my favorite tiny house designs as well. I could totally see living in one like this.

      That isn't allowed in every neighborhood. Tiny houses need their OWN neighborhoods. That involves petitioning zoning boards and planning ahead. People complaining that there is no place to park need to buy land and get zoning to MAKE neighborhoods.
