THE PAIN THAT ALMOST KILLED MY DREADLOCKS!

  • Why I Almost Cut My Dreadlocks - In this video I talk about an incident that drove me to almost remove my dreadlocks.
    Provided at least a somewhat active lifestyle you should be able to build strength in your neck/shoulders at a rate that will easily cope with the steady weight increase of the dreadlocks over time, however in situations where the weight changes rapidly (as is mentioned in the video) - OR situations where your neck/shoulder muscles become injured, your ability to deal with the weight may become seriously impaired.
    Two to three years into my dreadlocks I was involved in a car accident that left me with a minor neck injury - and despite it only being a minor incident I ended up in a pretty bad situation with regards to my hair. The soreness in my neck was greatly amplified by the weight of the dreadlocks and this inhibited my ability to effectively recover - while drying my hair at the time I had to lay down as I was unable to effectively carry the weight of the hair. I ended up wearing the neck brace most of the time to support the weight on my head - and this lead to weakening of my neck muscles, which pretty much made the whole thing worse. Over time I was gradually able to recover, but it took several months - and eventually I trimmed some of the length of my hair to help my neck to recover faster.
    I can say that the incident there was the only time that I've had serious issues with regards to the weight on my neck, and in that situation the dreadlocks were not directly responsible. My hair has since grown out again to a length much longer than it was at the time, but as I have not again suffered any injury to my neck, I have been able to adjust and strengthen at a rate which has been able to cope with the increasing weight of the hair.
    You cannot really "prepare" for such an incident, as it's something that everyone would rather avoid at all costs - however I thought it was worth sharing!

    I probably have to get my dreads cut off soon because it turns out I have psoriasis and apparently the treatment for it is not dread-friendly. My dreads also make my head more hot and therefore itchy, to a point where I can't get to sleep until about 5:30am. Do you know if there's any way I can handle my psoriasis and keep my dreadlocks? :( I've been able to handle dandruff with dreadlocks but psoriasis with dreads feel so much more difficult! I only have a couple weeks to find a solution or they're going and I don't think I'm ready to get rid of them yet. :s
    & That neck pain sounds like it was absurdly awful, I'm so glad you got through it and got to keep your dreads!

    QUESTION: Will you ever make a video specifically on using the Crochet method/crochet maintenance? I'd love to hear your standpoints on crocheting in a full video specified on that topic :)

      SavageLocks Possibly, but as I do not crochet my hair and would not be comfortable actively recommending it to others - it's not high on my list at the moment.

    I've had dreads 2 an half years now, not too far off my ass lengthwise and quite thick now. One thing I don't get is people who have trouble with neck cramp/pain from dreadlocks tend to be the people who have them down all the time. I used to have the odd aches and pains but when I started putting them up in buns, there's literally been no pain at all, it's definitely worth a try if you struggle with neck-related strainage.

    I know this is probably a stupid question but do you think it is possible to have short dreads sticking up with my hair? ( Not all of it will be dreads, just some areas ) [ My hair is reasonable thin, I get my hair cut with a 1 at the sides and back and about 2-3 inches on the top ]

      Harley Cran It is possible to have partial or "pet" dreads where a head contains both dreadlocked and unlocked hair, however the care and maintenance can be complicated depending on where the dreadlocks are placed as the two hair types need different treatment - the regular hair needs to be brushed and conditioned - the dreadlocks cannot be brushed and should not be conditioned. However even in such cases you may find it difficult to have them sticking up.

      Lazy Dreads Is it possible to have good looking short Dreadlocks just on the top of my head or would that just be something I think would look good in my imagination?

    • @LazyDreads
      @LazyDreads  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would maybe look to see if you can find examples of it already - to see if what you're imagining is something that has been done before and see whether you like it.

    I've have dreads for about 9years now and I've lots of dandruff. So sometimes it itchys so bad I really just want to cut them off. But figuring that I at least should make it to 10years, and then we will see what happens next. But regular hair is gonna be boring so I am not sure. :)

      Have tried salt water before? Just dissolve lots of salt in warm water and soak your scalp in it for a couple minutes. Its great for your skin AND dreads.

      Terzom IF you are suffering badly with dandruff I would not just continue doing what you're doing... as if the dandruff is so bad, something is not working out. Everyone's head is different and will require different treatment in order to result in a comfortable balance... if the dandruff is bad something is obviously not right and things should be addressed. The hair would be deep cleaned and the shampoo changed. A shampoo that works well for one person will not necessarily work well for another, you will need to try out options to find what works well for you and your hair/scalp.

      +Gustavo Fring Haha yeah, probably gonna have it rest of my life so. Just need to learn to live with it. But it's easier without dreads since you can wash your hair more often (which I don't with dreads)

      Doodle Maier Interesting. Well there are periods were it scratches a lot, and other time were I don't really feel it at all, except that it falls off from my head.
      Thanks for the tip

    So I recently got some maintenance on my dreads and now two days later my scalp hurts so bad I feel like my dreads are really tight up against my scalp. Any advice for me?

    • @dreadspeaks9411
      @dreadspeaks9411 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the only way to deal with that is to be patient and let the hair grow. I used to interlock my dreads and it would cause the same thing.

      Dreads take years to mature and they won't look like you want them to for a long time. All you can do is wait :)

    • @mayaibarra5230
      @mayaibarra5230 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd recommend either waiting or using a sea salt spray/Spock rolling. What I did with large bits of loose hair in between my dreads was began to make them into their own dreads and dreaded from Roots to about 6 inches down and let them do their thing (+using the sea salt spray)

      Be careful though with sea salt spray! When you buy one, there are often ingredients added to make the hair soft, because sea salt is slightly drying to the hair and people with "normal" hair want it to be soft. However, those ingredients will cause your dreads to become loose, and you don't want that, obviously. You should just dissolve lots of salt in water and put it in a spray bottle.
