Slipping Rib Syndrome - My journey (PRE OP)

  • In this video I'm talking about my 14 year long journey toward (finally) being diagnosed with Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS).
    For as long as I can remember, I've experienced both sharp and dull pain caused by my ribs. As an early teenager I went to see all kinds of doctors, neurologists, orthopedists, physical therapists and so on. I had x-rays done and I was first told to work out more, and then to stop working out. No one could or would solve the question of the mysterious pain I was experiencing. Some even told me it was all in my head. After a few years I gave up in the seeking of being diagnosed and finding a way out of the pain, I simply learned to live with it.
    When I was 25 I randomly met a naprapath at a party, and there started the actual journey of me being diagnosed. It's now about a year later and I am about to have surgery to remove the slipping cartilages that's causing my pain.
    I've had two ultrasounds done, one to out rule the probabilities of anything else being wrong, and one in order to help diagnosing SRS. I've also had a cat scan done and will be running a lot of tests before surgery.
    This is my first ever youtube video, so bare with me! ;-)

    This is so helpful. I lost multiple pregnancies because of this. Blood flow was suppressed. I was feeling horrible for years and been told to get on antidepressants because I clearly imagine things. Finally a massage therapist diagnosed me.

    It is really sad how today you must google your own diagnose and then keep looking for a doctor who actually knows basics of his job enough to aknowledge your condition. You have such obvious condition and they send you home with painkillers 🤬
    It seems to me that patients today often know more about such conditions than so-called professionals. Outrageous.

      i agree. i understand that not every doctor knows everything about every condition there is, but they SHOULD listen to their patients and when it comes to “rare” conditions as these, at least be intrigued to find out more about it!!

    Suffering for so many years with this would not have been easy.
    I play Rugby Union and got hit on my ribs 2 months ago and i have some idea of the pain you go through. When the muscles around that area lock up and its like being stabbed in your ribs. In my case its not SRS but its really good you posting about this as more people need to know so they can get proper treatment. Please post another video after surgery if you can.

    I concur with your doctor stories. All kinds of doctors I went to told me I had a kidney stone. They never could find the kidney stone with every imaging device there was. They decided I was trying to pass a kidney stone for 5 years. My pain would contract/squeeze on the ride side of my back ribs. On the scale of 1-10 pain scale it was a 65. Only last year a brilliant physical therapist I went to told me why my ribs would contract. He said my ribs were trying with all their power to keep my ribs still and in place. In over 10 years, not one doctor touched my back or ribs, they would just send me for tests or say I was lying about the pain to get drugs. Finally after I explained my pain to a doctor in a tiny town, he pressed on my ribs and the pain was horrendous! With no hesitation, he said: "It is your ribs." So it wasn't a 5 year old kidney stone...worthless fools! A few months ago, I found out there is a doctor that Hansen from West Virginia University trained to do the Hansen procedure in my state of Oregon! I am fighting my insurance to go to her. I live 3 hours from Bend, Oregon where she is. I have been tortured by this pain for over 15 years. It is a crime how doctors treat SRS sufferers.

    I have been dealing with the same issues for the last 7 years I only have it on my left side though. My ribs also look like yours, I got to use a lot too about them. I've noticed that lately it has gotten really bad it's been terrible for this last week and I can't do anything and it's awful. For years I tried to tell doctors how much it hurt and they kept telling me that nothing was wrong with me as well. I hope your surgery goes well or if you already had it I hope it went good. Thank you for the video! I’ve been trying to do so much research cause for 7 years I been dealing with this pain and been told I have back spasms or my ribs were probably just bruised and been given muscle relaxers or pain killers with nothing help. Many times if I jusy breath a certain way I hear a popping or cracking and it’s like I always feel this uncomfortable pain and then at times it gets super bad. And the pain goes to where I have super bad upper back pain on same side.and now it just feels like it’s getting worst where at times I’m sitting studying and actually feels like my rib is out of place. And now when I have the pain it actually looks like something is poking out and is swollen and super tender. And at times it feels like theres tightness on my chest. At time I felt crazy crying and just wanting to feel normal again without always have to feel this weird uncomfortable dull pain. Idk if it is slipping rib syndrome but ur video helped give me so much info. I hope ur doing better and please continue to post content on ur journey !

    This is such an awful thing to bear. You are super brave girl! I really want to know how your feeling after your surgery? I found this video because I thiiiink I have this going on and none of the doctors I have seen are helping so far. One thought it was pleurisy and another just residual soreness from having bronchitis at least 8 weeks ago but I know neither of those are right. Today the pain is so so severe and the anti-inflammatory drugs aren’t doing anything or any pain relievers. I did the hook maneuver test on myself and it intensified the pain sooooo so horribly to an extreme level. I’ll finish my dose of anti-inflammatory but if it doesn’t go away then I’ll have to see somebody again although I have no idea what kind of doctor to go see? They all keep telling me it’s just soreness but it’s def not. There is something else going on and everything else has checked out with my organs from any x-rays and scans. I just hope to get something done soon 😰😢 I can’t imagine having this for years and years! How awful. I am so sorry for you

      @@ljungkvistt No. In fact it is not only the denial of slipping rib syndrome, it is that no one gives a damn. Even worse I am stuck on steroids for the rest of my life because the "doctors" kept telling me my insomnia was not because of the steroids and the one asshole that should have helped me with the referral I needed did not, because I was confrontational, and did not accept his diagnosis. I have never met a more narcissistic group of "professionals" who don't have any idea how their "medications" work. I have case study after case study to prove what I'm saying, but I am shouted down, called an "angry person", laughed at, yes they laughed at me when I addressed the steroid related side effects I suffer from. I guess doctors don't care.
      Mostly because it's ligament problem, which can cure on it's own, it does, but it never gets back to perfection as it was before.
      And surgeries can't bring-back the lost elasticity of a ligament.

      @ljungkvistt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure if they've always looked like that to be honest, but I know many people with SRS who have totally normal looking ribs, so it's not unlikely that you have it. popping ribs sound very much like a clear symptom. have you tried the hooking maneuver? can you feel them moving? my pain was also located higher up than where they were slipping, there are so many nerves and muscles in there that it's all affected. I hope you get a diagnosis and I would love to hear how it goes for you :)

      hi!
      i’m sorry to hear that your daughter is struggling with SRS, it’s truly painful. what you want to find is a competent thoratic surgeon, preferably someone who is familiar with the condition. there are different procedures when it comes to treating SRS surgically so i suggest reading up on them and considering which one would fit best for her. gather up as much information as possible when you meet up with a doctor: not many knows about this and has to be taught on the subject. sending you good luck and feel free to ask me anything and updating me in the process!

      If your daughter is still suffering I highly suggest seeing Dr Adam Hansen at West Virginia University or Dr Klinkner At the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota I had a new surgery done on me 1 year ago and it involves using sutures to tie the ribs back in place and not taking ribs out I’m 13 and had one of the worst conditions on record and I play sports so I couldn’t have three ribs taken out and can’t play football again this surgery has a very high succes rate.

      @@ljungkvistt That's me! I've had this mystery pain for years and it started after a car accident. It mimics gastritis, IBS, GERD with the burning pain, etc. been told it's psychosomatic. This condition can be easily documented with having the person do a crunch motion under ultrasound and if the bones move too much during the motion, it confirms it. No doctor is willing to perform this test though.

    • @ljungkvistt
      @ljungkvistt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. It’s a part of my daily struggle, but sometimes it gets worse. If i sit down for more than two hours, the muscle on the left side of my spine (left is my most problematic side when it comes to my ribs) contracts somehow and leaves me with rib and back pain for days.

  • @Prayalone515
    @Prayalone515 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im certain this is the condition I am dealing with. Not near as extreme as yours. Mine is on my left side so my doctors always gave my PPIs and H2 blockers, focusing too much on my stomach even though I always said i think its more of a mechanical issue. I have horrible nerve tingling at night and cant sleep sometimes because of it. I see a chiropractor for upper back issues, I thing the subluxations of those ribs are whats causing my SRS. I also have a “calcified bridge” between two of my ribs, I am seeing my doctor and going more in depth about it today. I hope you are better!!

      @@ljungkvistt Hey. I went to Gassner 3 hours from where I live a week ago! She did thorough exam and diagnosed bad SRS on my right and also on the left but not as bad on left. Strange how slipping 9 and 10 ribs cause me excruciating spasms on right side in the back. Doctors can't comprehend 'referred pain'. I was brutally repeatedly assaulted and it wrecked my ribs, spine and pelvis. I am a female. Not genetic for me. How is your life going? Do your ribs make it hard to breath sometimes? Best to you! PS: David Copperfield is a book written by my favorite author. I am a writer too. Thus my tag.
