Just wanted to make some clarifications: A lot of people are suggesting that I cook the noodles al dente if I ever try this again. I actually cooked these noodles under al dente (3 minutes) before cooking them again and eating them at the end of the video. I put the seasonings in the noodles just because I thought it would be funny. Thanks for watching!
@tommyboyio1363 that's a neat idea if I ever worked with a material that's really difficult but overall could work, however I think this ramen would have kept breaking no matter the pattern
My boyfriend (who crochets) and I were out-loud yelling "NOOO" whenever you got multiple stitches in and then it would break. We knew in our hearts it wouldn't go far, but man we were rooting for you so hard regardless. Then you went for spaghetti, I said "They should be good as long as it's not angel hair," and I again yelled. I don't think even a drama show holds a candle to how many emotions watching you take a go at a Ramen Rat took us on
Try rice noodles! When cooked just a tiny bit they're thin but surprisingly durable! The glutenous rice flour forms strong bonds that makes the noodles chewy. These same bonds are what makes mochi chewy enough they can be a choking hazard. Definitely worth a retry!
If you want to give noodles another try, I wonder if it would work better if you try to crochet in a bowl of cool water to reduce friction and stickiness on the noodles. Also cooking the noodles slightly less, just to the point where they are flexible but not fully cooked.
@johnsmith2875 The wiggles in the ramen might help. Getting any purchase on a wet noodle is going to be hard but being able to hook in the curve could be useful?
Thoughts for next time: 1, Ramen gets softer the longer it's exposed to hot water, eventually disintegrating entirely. You probably want to cook it for less than the package directions, barely enough to separate the noodles from eachother, and possibly skip the seasoning packets in case the salt helps break them down. I'd recommend checking at thirty second or one minute intervals to see if they're flexible yet. 2, the square ramen bricks have most of the noodles laying next to eachother, parallel, instead of being tangled together like the round one you used. Try a square one, and see if you can separate it into groups of 4-10 noodles to work with at a time. Soften your current group enough to work with, only when you need to - keep hot water on-hand, separate from your noodles, and apply carefully in a small low dish. 3, stirring breaks the noodles. I highly advise not stirring. 4, Ramen noodles seem to be extremely fragile - much like individual fibers of wool, cotton, or flax are, before they're woven together into thread. Consider twisting or braiding the noodles carefully into 2 or 3 ply yarn, possibly braiding those strands together if they're still weak, and then using a huge needle to crochet that material. Take a look at your normal actual yarn to see how many sub-fibers it's constructed of, you'll probably see 3-6. If you're willing to spin fiber into yarn, please consider crocheting cotton candy. I believe in you, I think you can do it! Also, much respect for not wasting food. If you do give it another shot, I think just the head of the rat would be more than proof enough of concept.
Mark Twain is an American author who wrote The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (Which you might know better as the movie "A Kid in King Arthur's Court"), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and a BUNCH of other short stories and novels.
He was also generally a pretty awesome dude and a good example of how hate is learned from your environment and can be unlearned through understanding. As someone who's also from missouri I like him a lot and did multiple school presentations about him LOL
What a marvelous day! I had a good day at work, and now I get to lean back with episode 4 of Will It Rat? ! I think that for future roll calls of the previous rats, you should use a screenshoot of the noodle ball and name it "Lunch".
I appreciate your commitment to the bit so much. Matterial suggestion: do you have any very stringy plants near where you live? Something like willow leaves, super long grass, vines, ect? (Just please don't work with something you know you're alergic to)
If you really want a noodle rat, I wonder how much mileage you would get if you made your own noodle. Just a big giant one. Which brings to mind, dough! And then bake it to make a bread rat. That way if it breaks you can just add the broke piece back on. Perhaps better for finger crochet though??
This was awesome, you definitely went on further than I would’ve! An interesting material I’d like to suggest is doll hair. Sometimes they come as one long continuous strand, so you wouldnt have to tie it! You could make a very small rat.
I've seen people knit with ramen, but I'm not really surprised the crochet kept snapping it. One crochet stitch is a lot more pulling through than one knit stitch is lol
“Mark Twain” (it’s a pun from from the Mississippi steamboat culture to measure how deep the river was) was the penname of a popular American writer in his time and today. He was very witty and one of my favorites of his many quotes was his comment on finding out a rumor had spread of him having had died when he was in Europe or something, “The report of my death was an exaggeration”, which is where we all get the misquote, “reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” used today.
OMG this is *brilliant* but there would probably have to be several battery packs stuffed in the tummy LOL I think they might make some with super tiny watch battery packs!
I totally expected this to be done with plain noodles and not including the flavor packet. I was surprised you decided to do ramen and not spaghetti, though! Ramen is very springy but instant ramen in particular is not very strong. Definitely an interesting challenge though, lol. I really liked the bread idea someone said. You could do a similar idea with noodles/pasta again but with the fresh dough rather than store bought dried pasta. Than you wouldnt have to worry about it breaking because you can just stick the dough back together again. Then youd REALLY be able to make a giant rat ravioli. But maybe you wouldnt be able to boil it with filling because its not sealed... maybe just dont fill it and then once its cooked put some sauce inside lol.
Could you possibly try something from some kind of plant material like vines or whatever people use to weave into baskets. Also like Nerd ropes or sour straws. OR. A wig, like human hair?
You could try making a rat from that shiny thread used to make sparkle yarn. Since it's made for knitting/crochet, I imagine it would be more durable, and you can get a decent amount of it for a good price. Since it's so thin you could try to ply it to make it thicker and give it more structure?
I love this series so much but I have to say- I totally expected like.. “crocheting with weird yarns” type energy. Seeing this title in my notifications was completely unpredictable and I love it LMAO
This reminds me of a project I did for school. We were supposed to recreate an "ancient artefact" and share about its history and relevance. For whatever reason, I decided to make a "bowl" out of dried spaghetti. So I softened the noodles with hot water from the tap (since I wasn't going to eat them) inside a plastic tub and formed them inside a bowl I already had. For whatever reason, I kept the unused noodles in water in the tub, at room temperature... maybe I was going to make something else later? Those noodles were SO smelly within a day, like, gag-worthy. So don't do that! I don't recommend! You end up with stinky noodles and stinky noodle water to dispose of!
Mark Twine yessss! Mark Twain is a famous American writer. He wrote Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. I would suggest that the next material you use is Lion Brand paper yarn. It’s currently on sale at their website. The paper yarn is a bit of a pain to work with but it will definitely rat. Good luck with your next rat.

You're right, the seasoning was hilarious
Would a smaller rat pattern maybe work for fragile projects? Like a will it baby rat?
@tommyboyio1363 that's a neat idea if I ever worked with a material that's really difficult but overall could work, however I think this ramen would have kept breaking no matter the pattern
Al dente thick spaghetti would be a better option with a larger Clover Amour hook . Oiling or buttering the noodles would keep it from sticking. 😊
maybe chilling the noodles might help? It’ll make the noodles a bit more resistant to tension
Rat gives his weirdest battles to his most confused soldiers.
I think you should try floss if it's not on the list 😂 he'll be minty
That’s a great idea! I think dental floss will have a similar breaking issue, but I bet you that dental tape which is thicker would be able to rat.
Tiny and minty ❤️❤️❤️
Ohhhh I wonder how much floss is in a wheel? It would be a micro rat anyways so I wonder how much you would need. Easy to tie together too
@@albytross8681 I think it usually says on the little box !! The ones I've seen usually do anyways

Eating ramen off a plate with a crochet hook is so boy dinner 💀 I'm crying LMFAO

So true. They can actually be really difficult to chew through sometimes LOL

Finally the video for this comment. Its time has come.
If you want to give noodles another try, I wonder if it would work better if you try to crochet in a bowl of cool water to reduce friction and stickiness on the noodles. Also cooking the noodles slightly less, just to the point where they are flexible but not fully cooked.
yes! i was gonna recommend undercooking, but the water is an interesting idea 🤔
Maybe coat them in oil? 👀
AGREEEEEE!!!! All great points. I vote on a second try!
and a less curvy noodle...
@johnsmith2875 The wiggles in the ramen might help. Getting any purchase on a wet noodle is going to be hard but being able to hook in the curve could be useful?
I love the pattern of this series; hinged, unhinged, hinged, unhinged... It's fantastic ☺️
I just wanna say, I love that you say frick in the video and then, not two minutes later, give in and say fuck. Iconic

some tips for if you ever try this again: undercook the noodles at a lower heat and don't re-moisturize them too much. noodles looooove absorbing water, and while it does make them more flexible it also makes them very very very brittle. it *might* be easier if they're just a little bit undercooked and dry. also i think a pasta like tagliatelle might have a little bit more structural integrity, maybe?
I love that you tried that :)
