    I knew a guy once that had a complete system from Walmart. Pioneer subs, amps, head unit and mids and highs. He actually surprised me at how hard it hit. He had 2 big Pioneer amps on 4 12's and was nothing to be ashamed of. You could hear him rolling down the block very well. Sounded like he had a good quality set of 15's and a good amplifier. He bought it all on a Walmart credit card lol

      sometimes, design and quality of installation is more important than quality of gear. I believe a quality system can be built with all Pioneer gear for half the price of JL or Rockford...or any of these other Chinese made brands....I have no problem with Chinese made equipment, but not if it costs as much as European or American made equipment, considering it costs FAR less to manufacture by Chinese slave labor.

      I run two pioneer class D mono amps at 2ohms and 800w RMS each feeding four pioneer champion series TS-W311S4 12's in sealed boxes made to the exact internal volume for my sub's and 100% airtight, my system punches pretty hard.
      I have a class D handling my MIDs and highs producing 500w RMS but I'm really not a fan of the sound quality from a class D on the MIDs and highs, they are great for sub's though.

      To me pioneer, kenwood and sony dont have the same sound quality as Alpine, not do they sound as good as their older head units from the mid to late 90s (especially Pioneer and Sony). Replaced an old entry level Alpine bluetooth radio from 2012 and some old entry level kicker 6.5 inch coaxes from that same era with a brand new pioneer radio and speakers because the bluetooth was quirky, and the pioneer just didnt have the same sound quality or power, and the menu was very cumbersome to operate compared to the Alpine. Not a bad unit but I ended up putting the Alpine back in and repaired the surrounds on the kickers because they sounded 10x better. Pioneer radios just don't sound the same as they did back in the mid to late 90s to me. Not that they're bad, just not as good as Alpine. Same with Sony. Their older radios before the Xplod series came out used to sound great, especially the mobile ES series. Bought a Sony floating screen for my older Land Rover and again, just couldn't match the old Alpine in sound quality or power. Not bad units, just nowhere near the sound of an Alpine unit.

    Back around 1989 one of my first car audio systems was a small Pioneer 2 channel amp running 4 Pioneer 6×9s and it was a real screamer. I had all 4 speakers facing up behind the seat of my S-10 pickup. I played a lot of GnR, AC/DC and Van Halen through that system and it sounded really good to me :)

      These days noone would dream of using 6x9s for bass but the reality is they have essentially the same cone area as an 8 and when properly enclosed/baffled you can get solid sound well below 40hz. This was adequate for most music produced before the mid 90s and I feel privileged to have experienced this firsthand

Sound was awesome and loud but the speakers had bugger all bass coming from them. Turns out for the whole time i had the component system in the car, the speakers were not wired right (they were out of phase) and thats what was causing the lack of bass. Later in the 90's i added a Pioneer GM203 amp to my car stereo and still have it to this day.

    Big D - THANKS for testing a good quality budget amp! Even through TH-cam, that little amp sounded great on the music tests. It might be time to re-test some of the newer 4-channel or 5-channel models as some of the ones you tested years ago have had minor model revisions. Another interesting comparison would be a similar wattage Class D vs Class AB - is the sound noticeably different?

I wanted to present an offer up of some of/ maybe all, vintage Car Audio mags I got on shelf. It appears you already have a great catalog, but I hold mostly mid 90’s to early 2000’s editions…the only couple I may want to keep are those with my letters & response published. I was a kid and heavily into all things audio- call me a true audiophile- and at around 14yr old, they published my letters - cheers, thanks

    I was among the first American Autosound installers to install a Pioneer CDX-P1. Art Rubenstein was the Pioneer rep here in Hawaii in 1984 when these appeared. I at this stage had a Pioneer PORTABLE CD player plugged into the AUX input of my CONCORD Deck. I was the CONCORD guy..... WELL Art got 2 complete units from Japan, just in case one did not work there would be PARTS..... these were still prototypes but badged for US sale. Long story short, I installed the THING into a Mercedes 2 door convertible... Its TIGHT but I managed to make space for the ATTACHED BOX and cables... Ugggggg. IT WORKED!!!!. Art was pleased and so much so he gave ME that other example, said put it in YOUR car.... So I did. Sadly it was a skipperoo...... bad. HIGH VOLUMES in my car would make it SKIP bad. Well I tried many different mounting scenarios but eventually my PORTABLE found its way back into my car, LOL..... They got better over time. At this point, about 1984, 8 tracks were selling better than Cassettes. THEN LIKE MAGIC.... 8 tracks started disappearing.... Cassettes overtook them, and CD PLAYER!!!!! for a car!!!!. In like a year's time.... 8 tracks were relegated to the scrap heaps. Late 1985... PIONEER HISTORY. I own a Pioneer amp today in my beater car stereo.... SOLID. Cant go wrong with Pioneer products... STILL!..........BDBD/2022

    Great video! I’ve always been a fan of Pioneer. I picked up the big brother version that was refurbed off eBay a year or so ago for about $65. It’s the gma5702. I must say, it is a great amp too. I love how it sounds and the power it puts out. Now, they go for around $90 refurbed but still a great buy in my humble opinion. I was running a pair of Mission Bookshelf speakers full range and those little guys thumped!! I wish I picked up three of the amps cause two on subs and one on mids and highs would of been a killer budget setup. Again, thanks for sharing and great vid Big D!

    You rock Big D! Hey you ever seen an Orion HCCA150R? As far as I can tell they are, or have become pretty rare. Never seen another one and never seen any listed for sale. I got this amp and an HCCA 2100 out of an Astro Van that I bought as beater work van for a large development we were building houses on. I bought the van off a lot for $400.00 because it was not road worthy intending for it to spend it's last days on this property. In the back of the van was a boxy MDF panel attached to the driver's side wall that was taking up a bit of space that I wanted to rip out. I saw some cable ends dangling down just barely below the edge of the panel like someone had cut the cable as close to the panel as possible. You could only see them if you crouched down low. I reached up behind and felt amp fins. I unscrewed the panel and there were 2 absolutely mint Orion amps from the 90's mounted to the back of the panel. I had both amps tested and they both work. I could not believe my luck.

    My first monoblock amp was a Hifonics HFi 1000.1D. It did pretty well for what it was. It never ever got warm, and I had it connected with 8 gauge ofc power & ground, it only has a 80a fuse, I dont think it even needed 4 gauge. I ended up upgrading from that to a DC Audio 1.2K and 1/0 gauge ofc Sky High Wire and an XS Power battery in the trunk. I barelyyy even heard a difference from the Hifonics amp, (connected to the same sub/in same box) so Im not even sure how but I guess the DC amp wasnt that much more power to begin with.

    I have 3 pioneer D class amps, my two mono amps are great but the 4ch sounds harsh as hell and I have wanted to go back to A/B for my MIDs and highs but Dont think my cars electrical system could cope with an A/B producing the same RMS output as the class D, I'm already killing alternators in fairly short order with my current setup.

    • @Mr.Robert1
      @Mr.Robert1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Every single system that I put in my various cars throughout the years was always two amplifiers. A good quality 4 channel name brand amplifier driving the mids in the highs and a Class D monoblock driving either a single woofer or two woofers. Depending on what system I was building and what car I was putting it in. I'm going to tell you, I never upgraded my electrical system ever. Always had the stock battery, always had the stock alternator. Never bought a capacitor, a lithium battery or an upgraded alternator ever.

    That is the most rise I’ve ever seen. Normal rise is double at tuning frequency. Is that box sealed? What was that wired too? I know a million questions. I use that meter to measure rise all the time. That’s the highest I ever seen consistently. You’d need a 2000 watt amp to get 250 watts to that 6.5. I was getting down considering it never saw over 30 watts. Great video as always.

    Big D I am glad you said that numbers don’t show the quality of sound. And yes we want what we paid for so the numbers are important. But for people like me who are into car audio don’t always understand what’s under the hood. So maybe if you could make video or explain why a amp will SOUND good instead of just putting out the numbers. For example I have lower name brand amp NVX that has not failed me but when playing wide open at times I can’t help but notice that maybe it’s just not playing at clear. So I went ahead a purchased a Kicker cxa 1200.1 for an upgrade in quality. If you explain to us maybe why some amps sound so good compared to others. Great example would be today’s video. Pioneer has a great reputation and even thier low tier amps SOUND great.. why so?

  • @mikebiron7339
    @mikebiron7339 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Goes to show, the class A\B are still the best sounding. I recently "upgraded" my old 90's class A/B amps to a single 5 channel class D with tons of power. Yep, never runs out of power now, but sounds like dog $hit. The bass is way different and drops off all over the place. The mids and highs (2 sets in the car) respond ok until pushed. Then, you notice the digital roll offs and weird noises coming from the tweeters. I'm sorry. Class D just ain't there yet. I'm going back to class A/B for the quality of sound.

    • @Mr.Robert1
      @Mr.Robert1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A/B is made for sound. Digital is made for base only normally monoblock.
      I've never built a system with a one amplifier driving the entire system. Always did two amplifiers even if they were small amplifiers. Didn't matter I would always use a four Channel good quality name brand A/B class for the highs and mids. My second amplifier would be a Class D running mono to drive the sub or Subs.

    Us older guys are always amazed at how the younger guys don't know how innovative some of these old school brands are/were in high end audio both home and auto. Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, JBL, Clarion, Soundstream, Phoenix gold, MTX, Kicker were the top brands in the 80's/90's in car audio. Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood were big buck brands in home audio back in the day, and JBL/Infinity still kills in high-end home audio market, with no attention to Thor high level car audio drivers...quite a shame a lot of good stuff going overlooked.
