- Prison has all sorts of stereotypes associated with it, most of them being horrible, but what do actual prisoners say is the worst part of being locked up? In today's video we're going to see the real reason prison is so terrible, and it's not the reason you think.

In 2017, used to take care of an inmate who had been locked up since 1977. He’s never experienced cordless phones, computers, CDs, the internet, MP3s, etc. The idea of a smart phone was science fiction to him.
im 41 now and have never been back but at 18 i got two and a half years in prison and it was the worst experience ive ever gone though. its a frightening place for someone who isnt a real criminal and there are better punishments you can give people, prison should be reserved only for those who are a danger to society or those who do not comply with other punishments.
I met so many vulnerable people inside and they get bullied day in day out and nobody stops it, the prison system is broken and only serves to make people into worse humans

What if the "crime" is based on racist legislation, like: Black-codes, vagrancy laws, Jim Crow, segregation and the war on drugs, all of which contributed to the disproportionate mass-incarceration of black people?
For example, would you have told Rosa Parks "can't do the time, don't do the crime" after she was arrested for sitting in the front of the bus? 🤔

This is all so true, you can literally sleep all you want but it gets old really fast. Prison is one awful experience and I'll say as a former law enforcement officer that prison does NOTHING to rehab a inmate. Our prison system is so broken

They normalise violence and agression for individuals who would otherwise not have been violent or aggressive, and got locked up for a minor crime. They are now much more likely to committ a more violent crime after their release, and what is worse, is that they'll do so for a relatively minute gain or reason. This is also why I believe therapy and rehabilitation procedures conducted by trained psychologists is a much better way to deal with crime, as they do in Scandinavian countries
Unfortunately, most systems are not ideal.
In Sweden breaking out of jail is not a crime. This is because of how the endeavor
to gain freedom is viewed as a basic human instinct. You will not be punished for breaking out, though it can possibly be viewed as bad behavior and cat result in a full sentence.
There is nothing stopping you from escaping prison either.

When I was young I did 6 month's for the first and last time in my life. I was never bullied or assaulted but the bordism, claustrophobia in a cell, drama, missing my loved ones, fear, depression, feeling of failure and worthlessness nearly drove me insane.

And it was exactly those conditions that obviously convinced you to NEVER commit crime again!
Unfortunately, according to most state governments, you harming someone in self defense warrants the same punishment as if you did the harm unprovoked.
This is why many learn to become the provoker, more than just trying to stay level-headed. It's juts adding more fuel to the hatred/fire.
That's why it's important not to be broke. Having 5 or 10 thousand to retain a decent lawyer makes all the difference.
I literally went through every bit of this. I did 4 years. Never went back.

I spent my 20s on level 4 and 3 yards incarcerated in California State prisons and if I had to sum up my experience degrading is top of the list.
Having to squat and cough is about as humiliating as you can imagine.

They didn’t mention this in the video, but would you say lack of privacy is one of the worst parts? That sounds as degrading as anything. You can’t use the bathroom alone, you can’t shower alone. You likely share your room with another prisoner. Might have bars on one side instead of a wall.
From what I’ve gleaned, it sounds like privacy is something most prisons probably lack.
As a CO I can confirm this is 100% accurate. The one that stood out to me the most is more intelligent people have a hard time being entertained that's very true inmates were even a bit more intelligent will often try to talk to officers about the news or anyting of any depth at all trying to find an officer who can hold a intelligent conversation (many cant).

My dad works in a prison and I remember him telling me that its like babysitting not because he treated them like children but because they didnt act like adults (some of them) and they liked my dad and I asked why that was and he simply replied treat them like a human being
Anyone would act like a child if they don’t have freedom of choice. It is free will and freedom of choice alone that makes us adults at all. It’s literally the only difference. But I think we should just send criminals (minus the rapists and the murderers) into the military, let them find discipline and purpose and brotherhood while regaining their honor!
Unless their problem is drugs than they should be detoxed first and then sent to do service. They’ll gain everything they need that a prison is supposed to offer structure, discipline, strict rules, getting screamed at, people watching over you, activity the only difference being they feel like they have a real purpose and real competitive lifestyle. You want to get tough join military or go to prison the only difference is prison is far more boring and unhelpful due to idle time. Your more likely to develop mental illness with too much idle time and no purpose. They’re very compatible actually. Ones obviously much more beneficial to rehabilitating a lost person.

gods.urethra no, it’s not about how big of a crime you did, but about waiting for trial. The jail is where you wait for trial, in the police station I think, and the prison is where you go after trial and only then the time you are serving is going to count.
Very accurate. Here in my home state of Louisiana in the USA, we have the highest incarceration rate in the nation. During Hurricane Katrina, the Orleans Parish Prison flooded when the levee on the banks of the Mississippi River broke. The inmates were abandoned and left to die in the infested waters. When they tried to escape from the waters, they were shot in the backs with rifles for trying to "flee prison". Still makes me sick to my stomach.

You should do a video on prison systems in Europe. I've heard either the Netherlands or Belgium has a system that has worked so well they've actually closed prisons and converted them into hotels.

I’ve scrolled through this about 5 times trying to find a comment by a Norwegian about how they actually work with and reform people there & it works. The policy in the US (inhumane conditions, little to nothing spent investing in prisoners improving themselves, and no expungements unless you didn’t do it) only serves to create a class of prisoners to fill the prisons again and again, cutting them off from other opportunities. Those who want those opportunities say, “they did it to themselves,” but there are countries actually helping people who broke the law to get their lives together so they don’t feel they have to commit crimes, and it does work.
The noise is like trying to sleep in the chimpanzee section of the zoo at feeding time.

Prison changed me so much and I didn't realize this until I got out. Doing things I use to like driving a car felt like it was just so complex and scary. Finding work is hard and then you realize the only jobs that do give you a chance are low paying jobs. Even when two different companies tried to give me a promotion to be management and finally get a few benefits only to be rejected and could not move up. One of the companies actually let me go after they tried to promote me because they said that the higher ups no longer want someone like me employed selling cell phones. I could not find a place to rent an apartment either because they all do background checks. Even though I haven't been arrested again in almost 20 years. I would like to talk to a psychiatrist but I just can't afford it since Obamacare got so expensive I could no longer afford coverage. I wish that I could finally be left alone to live a normal life with my wife and hopefully find a career so we could be able to afford to have a kid of our own without having to ask for government assistance
Sorry too hear u faced all that discrimination after u served ur time for ur crime. I have known people that have served time and faced the same struggles. Most turned there life around but it was not easy. I think this needs too change because iam sure it contributes too some ending up back behind bars

Separation from family, never having a moment to myself, lack of food, and thinking about what you’re missing out on were the worst for me. Actually met some really decent people in jail and prison who just like me made a bad decision.
One of the reasons why it's so important for them to have support on the outside. Monthly commissary money, usually $50 a month makes their month. Visits are so, so important to their mental health. Visiting hours are LOUD. Bring lots of sk gles or rolls of quarters for the vending machines. Eating a greasy burger with a loved one can help ease the boredom and loneliness. Writing letters help too. Send them pictures. That reminds them of life on the outside.
The fear of missing out really bothers me. I correctly complain about my lack of peace. I will no longer.

So, the prison has done its job. It scared the devil out of you. Now, you can operate, be a decent human being, like the rest of us. I have no sympathy for people in prison, except for the ones who are there innocently or there for making simple mistakes. For people who make a simple or dumb mistake, there should be another facility for them. Those who are absolutely evil are getting their just recompense. No sympathy or tears being wasted here.

If you are sentenced to a long term in prison you don't count the days nor the months. You count by the seasons.

States/countries that focus on rehabilitation over punishment have a much lower recidivism rate.
Prisons get more funding based upon the number of prisoners they have, that's why Private Prisons are focused on INCREASING recudivism rates, not decreasing it with rehabilitation.
Shame on on the people who invest in these prison companies.

I used to work in a prison and the amount of constant noise that usually only dies off late in the middle of the night is insane

In the Federal Bureau of Prisons, inmates yell and scream all day and the guards slam doors all night. When they check on you at night they will wake you up to make sure you are alive... sometimes it is every 15 minutes. They do this by slamming a fist on the tray port...

We really need programs to help these criminals get back into normal society since sometimes they really are not aware and so much has changed.

Thank you for talking about these subjects, I think that all police officers, judges, prosecutors, anyone who has a job related to or capability to send someone to prison, should have to spend a week or so there, like that cop you mentioned in the documentary. That would give them the perspective that they need.
It would be nice if you could mention some things that we, as average citizens, can do to bring about prison reform, and end the injustice being committed at regular, non-celebrity prisons.
Should we call our government officers, or give to a charity for prison reform? Please let us know in your next video that has to do with prison. That would be really helpful! But thank you for shedding light on those subjects which are difficult to talk about

It sounds like the easiest way to improve rehabilitation would be to improve standards in the prisons themselves. Improve basic comforts, ensure all are properly feed and cared for, make absolutely certain the prison operators are reminded that their prisoners are still human and should be treated of such. Ect... Of course it’d be easier to accommodate less dangerous and minor lawbreakers, but the more chronic and dangerous ones would likely also abuse any given comforts if they saw fit to do so it’s all a balancing act.
I'm not sure exactly what the state prison is like, but I did do 90 days in the county jail for a DUI in 2012. I do remember that they keep it very cold inside and it may be just the same routine everyday that would drive one crazy, like every 4 hours, they would say "count time, get on your bunks, count time". Also I do remember the constant noise because you stayed in a dorm with at least 100 other people. At least I didn't have any problems with violence. Still, I would much rather live in the place where I'm at in my profile picture which is in a ranch called Santa Maria de los baños in El Marqués near Querétaro, México. There, it seems to be even more relaxing than most places in the United States.

I think the quote at ~8:30 may actually be from me. I went undercover in CCJ for 60 days and determined that I no longer wished to pursue police work due to some of the laws I would have to enforce.
this is what happens when you privatize the prison system. corporations incentivized to incarcerate as many people as possible for as cheaply as possible, they write contracts with cities/states to require a certain number of 'bodies' to fill their beds and they cut amenities as far as they can without killing enough people to cause an uproar.
Private prisons are awful.
First, I 100% agree. Our private prisons are incentivized to get and keep people in prison, and pay the minimum to keep them there. Private corporations will maximize. Of course, if we got the incentives right then I think private prisons would work. I.E., if prisons were incentivized on their recidivism rate, not how full they were. Of course, there would still need to be BETTER watchdogging than we have now to make sure they weren't cutting corners on say food.
@@Chr0nic1er The private prison corporations should be prohibited from lobbying for more laws setting prison terms, longer prison terms, and less parole or community sentences. They are the people who make the money from having more people incarcerated.
Majority of these deserve what they get. I feel bad for the ones that are in there for small things; what they have to endure.
And they say corporal punishment is inhuman.

Even though I spent a week in prison before my mind cracked, I found another side of prison. I think the most nerve wracking experience being in prison is your mind going insane. I literally started walking around my cell to pass the time. If I had a scrunched up piece of paper and was throwing it at the wall it would have been better than nothing

I knew someone who went to prison and he would have chores in the kitchen. He saw some huge (50lbs) containers of food with the printed words, "for institutional consumption only." That freaked him out.

I actually ate toliet paper and toothpaste in jail bc i was so hungry. A few of the women said that the toliet paper actually would help the hunger. I hear that eating the tooth paste in there is bad for u. Alot of inmates came in on drugs and under nourished and arent fed enough

Summary
The purpose of a prison is to change the behavioral problems of a person and to re-educate them so that they would be re-ntegrated into society. Its not only the prison but the justice system, funding system of the government and the government itself that affects prisons overall.... the world is changing so should prisons around the world, not only in America but everywhere else....
The purpose of the prisons is to make the inmate's experience as inhumane & degrading as possible to break their will/spirit and *increase* recidivism rates, so the Private Prisons can make more money.

Prison time would drive me crazy most probably, as my congenital depression is hard to deal with even outside.
This is what Prison is like kids. Dont try to end up there.
